“People with Tourette’s can’t be in public places because I have sensory issues.”
Congrats? Nothing makes your access needs more important than mine. They’re equally important. Trust me, when go into a public space where I know I’m supposed to be quiet in, I do EVERYTHING in my power to make it so that my vocal tics are calm and won’t bother other people. I manage my disability on my own and do my best to make myself manageable for everyone else. You can at the very least recognize that, and try to manage your own disability without telling me I need to leave. Bring earplugs, bring headphones, bring ear defenders, listen to music, heck, I don’t care. Just don’t yell at me for being to loud when I’m try my hardest to be a silent as possible.

Was talking to a person about neurodivergency since they came over and said I'm perfect echolalia bait (lol) and they said "I'm audhd" and I was like "oh cool I have tourette's :)" and they responded like "oh... I'm so sorry.." like I'd told them I had cancer ?? 😭 So if you're non tourettic this is your friendly psa that if someone tells you they have tourette's respond as you'd want someone to respond to your having ADHD or autism or anything else that makes your brain funky but isn't a terminal diagnosis LMAO
Tourette's isn't a horrible thing, it's just how my brain works!

seeing that a disorder is more common in men always makes me suspicious because on the one hand, yeah it could be actually more common in men. on the other hand, 9 times out of 10 its just less commonly diagnosed in women who have it and is brushed off either as something else or as nothing.

July is disability pride month!
Disability pride is about fighting for accessibility and disabled rights. It’s about awareness and acceptance! It’s about not being ashamed about our disabilities!
You can celebrate this month by learning more about different disabilities and conditions, as well as the history of disability rights. You can advocate in whatever way you can for equal rights and opportunities for disabled people, and advocate for accessibility where it is lacking. For non disabled people, this is a great time to listen to and uplift disabled voices, especially those who are particularly marginalized even in the disabled community (think BIPOC, high support needs, nonspeaking, or those with rare or stigmatized conditions).
Tumblr media
Above is the disability pride flag!!!
The red stripe on the flag represents physical disabilities, the yellow represents neurodivergence and cognitive disabilities, the white is for invisibles and undiagnosed disabilities, the blue means psychiatric disabilities, and the green represents sensory disabilities! The grey background represents those we have lost due inaccessibility and ableism.

"The creator with tourettes I used to watch in 2020 no longer posts videos of themselves with tics! They MUST be faking!!"
FALSE!
Tics and tourettes are waxing and waning conditions. There are periods of exacerbation and periods where the tics seem to others to have "disappeared".
Things like stress, caffeine, certain food dyes, lack of sleep, excitement, PUBERTY (this is why there's a stereotype that we're all 16 year old kids, simply because tics worsen at this age) can all make tics worse.
Ageing, medication, therapies like CBIT and many other factors can reduce tics over time.
Not to mention, the fake claiming culture that came from 2020 has made a lot of us go back into the shadows and edit tics out of our videos due to stigma.
This is not a sign of faking, you're just uneducated about these disorders.

Happy disability pride month to all with tourette's- but especially to
Tourettics with obvious tics
Tourettics that have extreme trouble suppressing
Tourettics that have self injurious tics
Tourettics with tics that limit our mobility, our ability to complete specific tasks, our ability to work or go to school, or even to be out in public
Those of us with "ugly" or "rude" or "gross" tics
Tourettics that are accused of being on drugs because of our tics
Tourettics with disruptive tics (loud tics, coprolalia)
Tourettics who went undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for too long because our tics present differently than the typical medical perception of tourettes (that's 50% of us by the way)
Tourettics whose tics got worse later in life, not better.
Tourettics who developed addictions to help their tics
Tourettics with moderate to severe tourette's
You are loved, accepted, and welcome here

Absolutely ice cold take that is still somehow, somewhere controversial:
People with Tourette’s deserve to be able to go to movie theatres, libraries, church and any other place where you’re expected to be quiet.
