My impression of Tokyo was that of an overwhelming richness of forms and composition. I imagined the parts of the city as cropped flat images and their intricacy made it impossible to determine the sense of the space. The city was no longer a structure arranged by man through an application of a system but a wild ecosystem. Meanwhile the only rest for the eye was allowed while looking at an empty sky encircled with a line of the buildings.
The series of photographs creates an ironic yet playful exercise for the eye, through an act of strict artistic documentation rather than imaginative creation.

St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1964, Tokyo Kenzo Tange
The structure of steel and concrete, supposedly heavy but in fact deprived of physicality. The Tokyo Cathedral’s nature is not that of a building on the ground, but of a frame which leads one’s gaze toward the sky, like in a prayer.
