There are many fanfic interpretations of characters that make me kind of miffed but Mario and Luigi having a bitter rivalry has got to be my least favorite and anyone who thinks that either of them could ever truly hate each other deserves uncold pillow on both sides.

Happy Mar10 Day!!
I have written a surprise Mar10 story to commemorate our appreciation and love for our favourite red plumber, Mario 😊 you can read beyond this point and I have also published it on Archive of Our Own in the link right down below. I’d really appreciate feedback on the story here and/or Archive of Our Own if you liked the story.
Please read on and enjoy! ☺️
We Love You, Mario!
Summary: Mario receives a wonderful surprise from the three precious people who care and love him for who he is…. (A verse from “You Will Always Find Me In Your Heart” is added for Peach’s singing portion of her gift to Mario; a beautiful song by Shaley Scott and Christopher Lennertz)
“Luigi, are you sure you’re going to be okay? You already went through the trouble making coffee for us both this morning…I don’t like the idea of you being alone…especially with your ankle like this…”
Luigi was propped up on their couch with his left leg propped up on a pile of pillows while drinking his coffee. His ankle is wrapped up with a stark white bandage with an ice pack on top of it. Mario was sitting near his brother, his face filled with loving concern as he gripped one of his hands. Luigi smiled reassuringly and squeezed back.
“I promise you, Mario, I’ll be fine…it’s bad luck I sprained it but I can assure you it’s not that serious. I’ll be right as rain, thanks to your care…” Luigi said and gestured to their toolkit, “And besides it won’t look good for our business to decline any more work requests from our regular clients back in Brooklyn.”
Mario sighed, knowing that his brother was right. Their plumbing business was beginning to thrive since their first adventure together and the brothers found lots of benefits dedicating certain days to work in Brooklyn and the remaining days in their established home in the Mushroom Kingdom. He had already taken two days off to look after his little brother…Mario took out his red mobile phone to check the work schedule Luigi arranged for the day…little jobs here and there until late afternoon…nothing too major…but still…
“I’ll be fine, big brother…please don’t worry about me. Let me make it up to you for dinner tonight so that way you can see I can take care of myself and find the time to cook what you like. What do you say?”
Mario smiled and brushed his hand gently against the back of Luigi’s head, “I don’t mind anything, little bro. I just want you to take it easy…but promise me that you’ll call me if you need anything, okay?”
“I promise.”
“Good.”
Mario leaned in to press his forehead against Luigi’s, savouring the warmth of their skin. He then stood up from the couch, lugging their toolkit over his shoulder.
“Have a good day, big bro. Oh and don’t lock the front door just yet. I might to check on our garden in a little while.”
Mario had to smile. Luigi’s penchant for cooking and gardening went hand in hand…it was actually quite nice to have fresh herbs, berries and vegetables on site rather than just buying from the local markets. He was quite proud of his little brother’s green thumb.
“Alright, I’ll leave it unlocked. But please…don’t overwork yourself. I’ll be home soon as soon as the last job is done. Thanks for the coffee, little bro.”
Mario gently kissed Luigi’s forehead as a sweet parting before exiting their cosy cottage and making his way towards the warp pipe leading to Brooklyn.
——
Luigi carefully stood up from the couch after finishing his coffee, testing the floor with his left ankle first as he stood up slowly. Just a slight ache he could manage. He smiled upon hearing some rhythmic knocks on the door.
“The door’s open!” Luigi called out.
Luigi’s smile widened with recognition, seeing his visitors. He slowly shuffled his feet and gently hugged the taller individual who returned in kind. He held out a fist to the other whereupon he felt a friendly bump in return.
“Hello Peach…Toad…”
“How are you feeling, Luigi?” the princess looked at the younger plumber with kind concern, “That nearly put a spanner in the works…you shouldn’t strain yourself.”
“Don’t worry, Princess, it’s not as bad as it looks. I’m still standing, see? And it’s not as swollen as before. Mario took really good care of me and stopped it from becoming worse.”
“Everything is pretty much ready at Star Hill as we planned…I just hope that I can put your lessons to good use…” Peach’s smile turned a bit shy and her cheeks glowed pink, “I hope that he’ll like my gift…”
Toad was grinning knowingly and Luigi’s eyes softened tenderly. Peach really was sweet and kind as Mario said…he placed a hand on hers. He had been quite flattered that the princess looked to him to help improve her cooking skills to make his brother’s favourite foods.
“I know he will love anything you give him, Peach. Just relax and everything will be fine,” he said reassuringly with a comforting smile. Then he turned to Toad, “Did you write your letters?”
“Yup, we did what you asked us to do, buddy,” Toad held out a blue envelope while Peach was clutching her own pink envelope delicately.
“Great…and I have mine,” Luigi showed them his green envelope, “Let’s get the rest of the surprise done before my brother comes home from work.“
——
Mario heaved a sigh of relief the moment he leapt from the warp pipe, his eyes brightening at the sight of their cottage illuminated by the late afternoon sunshine. After leaping across the sliding platforms and blocks, he approached their home and found the door unlocked. He went inside…and was met with silence…he frowned…he hoped nothing bad had happened to his little brother while he was working. He had checked his mobile phone each time he finished a job and there had been no messages from Luigi to warrant any worry. He was about to call out for Luigi until his eyes spotted what was on their dining table: a cup of cocoa with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles and a grassy green envelope. He placed their toolkit aside to relieve his aching shoulder.
“Oh Lu…” Mario smiled fondly as he made himself comfortable on his chair and took his first chocolatey sip. It was sweet and lukewarm…just how he liked it. Then he took the envelope and carefully tore it open. After unfolding the matching green paper, he read his brother’s neat handwriting.
“Hi Mario,
Before you say anything, I am fine. I just thought that it might be nice to have dinner somewhere else and to show my love and appreciation for you. I can’t be more grateful and blessed to have you as my wonderful big brother. Your protection, encouragement and cuddles are always the best and you’ve always believed in me and brought out the best in me despite my fears, anxieties and doubts. I’m everything I am because of you, bro. We are like the sun and the moon, you and I. We’re a team and we always will be. You’ll find your first gift in our garden and your second letter which will tell you where to go next. Enjoy your cocoa first before you go though.
Ti voglio bene, fratellone…”
Mario felt a happy tear in his eye after reading his brother’s touching letter. Somehow it also made his cocoa taste even better, knowing how much love and care Luigi poured into it.
“Ti voglio bene, fratellino…”
——
Clutching his brother’s letter close and adjusting his red satchel that carried his keys and mobile phone, Mario had to stop to admire what was growing in their garden which was only a few minutes walk from their cottage towards the local markets. It was initially a small unused piece of land which the Toads were happy to let the brothers use and Luigi wasted no time to gleefully experiment what he could grow during pockets of free time. Now it was flourishing with some bushes chock full of Yoshi berries, rows upon rows of colourful herbs, green vegetables and pretty flowers…and speaking of flowers…he turned his attention to the row filled with Fire Flowers. They were his little brother’s current pride and joy and had been quite difficult to grow after managing to extract some seeds during their last trip to the fields from whence they came from. But Luigi somehow succeeded after much trial and error and persistence on his part and Mario couldn’t be happier for his latest botanic accomplishment. It also helped that the Fire Flower Fields had been a positive association with Peach as she had given him warm reassurance they’d rescue Luigi and began to see her beyond her royal status as a princess…but rather as a beautiful strong young woman who he began to feel a stirring connection with…it was quite a sight to watch the crimson and golden flowers starting to sway with the light breeze and glow with the sunshine filtering through the thick leafy branches sheltering above them. It was then he saw something sparkling hidden in the Fire Flowers. He gently pushed them apart so not to activate the fire power-up and found a small red box tied with a shimmering golden ribbon and a blue envelope. After extracting the precious items, he sat down to momentarily relax on the plushy grass surrounding the perimeter, breathing in the fresh air. Keeping his gift and opened letter close, he tore open the second envelope and read its contents written in blockish handwriting.
“Hey Mario,
It’s Toad. Bet you didn’t expect this letter coming from me, right? Well, if you’re reading this, you must have found your cool little brother’s present as well. Don’t open it just yet and keep it with you because I have some things to say (or write) to you. I knew the first time I met you that we’d be best friends. You surprise me in so many ways and I can tell that you have a big heart to match that cheerful grin of yours. I really admire the way you look out for Luigi and the princess. Everyday I can see why they both spoke so highly of you and I agree. You really are a great guy so don’t you ever forget that. You’ll find my gift in the next location along with the third and final letter to tell you where to meet us…can you remember where we first met? You’ll find the answer there…you might want to bring one of your brother’s Fire Flowers in case it gets too dark…or maybe give it to a special someone (hint hint, you know who I’m talking about)…
Your best friend, Toad”
Finally finishing the letter, Mario chuckled with a bit of a sheepish blush upon reading the last sentence. Toad had often dropped hints about his growing feelings towards Peach…
He observed that his surroundings were getting a bit dark and the radiance of the Fire Flowers grew brighter. Not wanting to waste any more time, the red clad plumber carefully plucked one of the glowing blossoms, taking it with him along with his letters and gift, which he safely stored in his satchel. He had to make it to the Mushroom Forests as fast as he could…
——
The sun was close to setting by the time Mario traversed into the Mushroom Forest to get to the specific area where the warp pipe was located…the pipe that started their adventure…and met Toad for the first time. He had to thank his lucky stars that the little mushroom being had become his first friend and ally in this strange but wonderful world…but what mattered now was locating Toad’s gift. A soft glow caught his attention and he couldn’t help but venture closer. The source of the glow came from a very a small nest made out of woven sticks and grass…as he knelt down to inspect it, he noticed that the Fire Flower seemed to brighten its radiance and swayed slightly like it did back in their garden. It appeared to be reacting to the contents in the nest. There were power-up mushrooms inside except they were golden like the sun…he sucked in a breath of wonder…he had heard that they were extremely rare….how did Toad come across them? How did he manage to get two of them?
It was then he saw a pink envelope nestled inside…a rosy blush decorated his cheeks and a deep seated warmth enveloped his being…it…couldn’t be who he thought wrote it. He gently took it out and opened it, the familiar perfume of flowers pleasantly wafting around him. He smiled and read the daintily written words…
“Dear Mustache,
If you are reading this, this means that you have found Toad’s precious gift to you. He really wanted you to have them when he returned from his latest expedition. These power-ups are said to bring good luck and fortune to those who eat them. It’s really charming that he really looks up to you. I hadn’t imagined that your arrival in my kingdom would be unusually fortuitous and I’m really glad that you and your brother have become my dearest friends…especially you. And…I know I keep on saying this but your tenacity and persistence in never giving up despite the rising odds against you is what opened my eyes and fill my heart with hope that there’s always a silver lining in every dark situation. Thank you for also making me laugh and showing me the fun side of things…it was wonderful visiting your home kingdom of Brooklyn the other time with Luigi…my present for you is too…personal to be opened in this place…come to where we’ll have a wonderful dinner picnic your dear brother has organised and I’ll show it to you. I hope that you’re in the mood for stargazing together later tonight…see you there.
Princess Peach”
Mario traced the letter with tender fingers, imagining her gloved hand writing those sincere words. Stargazing…he had a pretty good idea where it could be…not wanting to waste any more time, he collected the golden mushrooms and placed them carefully inside his satchel, while making a mental reminder to give one to his brother later…Luigi deserved it and he felt that this gift was better shared. Standing up, Mario carefully refolded the letter before filing it with the other letters in the satchel. The sky was beginning to darken…now he felt glad that he brought a Fire Flower with him to navigate his way back to find the nearest warp pipe that would take him towards Toad City, his destination in mind: Star Hill…
——
Mario’s face burst into a beaming smile as he sprinted up the ascending spiralling path to the highest summit of Star Hill. Despite his exhaustion from his day’s work slowly catching up to him, knowing what’s ahead kept him going, pumping more adrenaline in his system. Upon reaching the top, his ocean blue eyes twinkled brightly as the early stars shining above the pink and violet hued sky. He could make out three individuals waving to him. He waved back, now approaching them in a more relaxed stroll. It was a beautiful setting for a dinner picnic. There were colourful lanterns hanging on the nearby trees, making the vicinity glow like a rainbow. Luigi, Peach and Toad were sitting on a large picnic rug where there were several steaming creamy and tomato pasta dishes, freshly baked garlic bread and a generous serving of caprese salad.
“Surprise!” Luigi, Peach and Toad exclaimed as Mario sat down to join them. He carefully took off his satchel and placed the Fire Flower nearby.
“Everyone…what…what’s all this?”
Luigi, Peach and Toad exchanged looks with each other before the latter two nodded to Luigi. The younger plumber gently shuffled over to his brother while minding his ankle and patted his shoulder with a loving smile on his face.
“We just want to show how much you mean to us, big brother…hence we did this…”
“Luigi did most of the preparations, Mustache. Toad and I pitched in to help in any way we can,” the princess explained, “It’s a good thing his sprained ankle didn’t largely affect his wellbeing otherwise the surprise would’ve been ruined…”
“Did you find our presents, buddy?”
“I did…here…” Mario showed them his satchel, opening it up and showing the contents inside.
“Open mine first, Mario, please?”
Mario located the gift box and untied the ribbon. Opening it, he found two necklaces with dog tag pendants nestled inside some white tissue paper. He reverently took out the necklaces…one gold and one silver…he inspected them both and found that the gold tags were patterned with sun motifs while the silver tags had moon motifs…both sets of pendants had the same two sentences inscribed on them…
“Nothing can hurt as long as we’re together…as long as we’re together, everything is going to be okay…” Mario read softly. He looked up in astonishment to his little brother, “Lu…”
“We’re like the sun and the moon…you give off such brilliant light like the sun, Mario and I, like the moon, bask in your light and be inspired to be the best that I can be…I thought that it’ll be nice to keep a physical reminder that we’re always here for each other…so I worked a bit extra hard to get them and to add these designs…” Luigi then scooted closer and took the golden dog tags and chain, “May I, big brother?”
Mario nodded and leaned in a bit closer so that Luigi could clasp it around his neck. Wanting to reciprocate his little brother’s gesture, he took the silver necklace and dog tags and secured it in place around Luigi’s neck. Leaning in close, they nuzzled their foreheads together, their dog tags sparkling in unison under the starlight…
“Thank you, Luigi…” Mario cupped his little brother’s cheek, thumbing his skin softly, “I’ll treasure them forever and I’ll never take them off…”
Luigi’s eyes shone brightly as diamonds as he gripped his brother’s hand to press it a bit more firmly against his cheek, enjoying the warmth, “Me too…I’m so happy that you like them, Mario…”
When they parted, they carefully tucked their dog tags inside their shirts, each brother feeling a welcoming foreign metallic weight around their necks. Then Mario turned to Toad with an incredulous grin.
“Thanks for these power-ups, Toad. I know they’re rare but surely you’d need them one day.”
Toad shook his head insistently, “Nope! No can do, Mario. I think you might need them more than me. I’m pretty good at finding rare things so there’s a good chance I might find them again. I insist only the best for my best friend.”
It’s then Mario noticed that there was a pink gift box near Peach and wondered what it was, piquing his curiosity. The princess seemed to read his thoughts and turned to him with a smile.
“Let’s save my gift for last,” Peach said while gesturing to the spread laid out for the picnic, “Luigi cooked all your favourite foods for dinner tonight. Let’s enjoy them together, shall we?”
Food always tasted better when it’s shared with good company. Mario savoured each tantalising morsel, giving never ending praise to Luigi who blushed and chuckled with mirth while Peach and Toad shared smiles as they witnessed their loving interaction.
——
It was after all the food was consumed and bellies are contentedly filled when the princess finally presented her gift. Peach’s smile was now turning a bit shy…
“I…I made this for you…just lift up the lid, Mario…”
Mario did as instructed and the box’s sides dropped lightly to reveal a cake inside…it was covered with snowy buttercream and decorated with sugared pink petals, strawberries shaped into hearts and peach slices arranged like roses…in the centre stood a fondant figure of Mario in a triumphant pose and holding up a miniature super power up mushroom. The red clad plumber was mesmerized at what he saw and looked back at Peach who was gazing at him with tenderness in her sapphire blue eyes and a rosy blush starting to appear on her pale cheeks…
“I know it’s not much, Mario…but I made this cake with your brother’s wonderful mentorship…and there’s more…”
“Peach…” Mario whispered, his own cheeks heating up.
Luigi and Toad smiled widely as the green clad plumber nodded to the princess with an encouraging gleam in his eyes. Peach took a deep breath and began to sing what was in her heart…
“Love is all I need…it’s where it all began…you will always find me in your heart…I know that you can see just who I really am…so always know I’m never far away…keep me close another day because you’ll always find me in your heart…”
By the time she was finished, Mario was staring at her…his eyes filled with amazement and his red cheeks glowed like the Fire Flower he had managed to pick up in a trance…then he reached out for one of her hands, caressing it reverently.
“I hope that my gift conveys these feelings I have in me…” her fingers softly gripped back, “And what I feel for you is deeper than I ever felt before…beyond friendship and maybe…something more…if you’ll have me, Mario…”
Luigi and Toad looked on with trepidation, wondering how Mario would react.
“Princess…you made me speechless…” Mario chuckled, trying to keep his thundering heartbeat under control, “Thank you for this precious gift…”
He glanced at her dainty hand in his…the hand that penned the sweet words in her letter…the hand that worked tirelessly with its twin create this wonderful cake…and he gently pressed his lips on the back of it, his ocean blue eyes glowing with soft affection and bashfulness combined. He looked back up to Peach to find her face glowing and her smile just growing a bit wider…he had never seen a sight more beautiful than her. He made a side glance towards Luigi and Toad. Toad was practically trying to hold back his squeaks and whoops, his beady eyes gleaming while Luigi was looking on tenderly with a wide smile on his face.
“This probably pales in comparison to what you have given me but…your strength and courage gave me hope when you reassured me that you’d help rescue my little brother back then in the Fire Flower Fields…I was beginning to feel something deeply towards you…and I’m so happy that these growing feelings I have for you are reciprocated…” Mario held out the Fire Flower to the princess, “If you’ll have me, Princess, know that I’m here for you just as you’re here for me…”
In response, Peach took the Fire Flower from Mario and gently inhaled its spicy yet sweet perfume, their hands still intertwined. Slowly, they leaned their faces towards each other. Peach cupped Mario’s face first to press her petal lips against his cheek…so sweet and delicate like butterfly wings. As she pulled back, he gently combed her golden locks while kissing one of her temples, lingering a bit longer to savour the shared warmth. Their eyes were sparkling like starlight when they gazed into each other’s eyes as they separated…
A sniffle caught their attention and they turned to see Luigi wiping some tears away even though he was still smiling while Toad was grinning widely, clearly pleased with the happenings. Mario held out his free hand towards Luigi who didn’t hesitate to quickly crawl to his brother and nuzzled against his side. Toad finally let out a cheer and jumped about like an unloaded spring that had been wound up too tightly.
“Thank you, everyone…this surprise really touched me straight to my heart,” Mario felt his eyes moisten as he thanked them. His heart felt so full that the warmth overwhelmed to the brim…
He felt Luigi wrap his arms tightly around him and pressed his forehead against his, “We love you so much, big brother…always know and remember that, okay?”
“We’re here for you, big guy! No matter what,” Toad situated himself close to Mario, his hand firmly gripping onto his arm.
Mario took in their happy and loving expressions directed at him when he momentarily pulled back from his shared forehead nuzzle with Luigi…this moment together would be one to always treasure for eternity, acknowledging that he was loved and supported…and he also knew what would make this even better…
“I hope you don’t mind, Peach, would you do the honours to share the cake with everyone?”
The princess responded by leaning in to kiss his cheek gently.
“Of course, Mustache…”
——
Peach’s cake was sweet and delightful in texture and taste. She had clearly taken in Luigi’s lessons well as the cake was gone seemingly in seconds quickly save for the fondant figurine Mario wanted to keep for little longer. He looked on fondly at Peach and Luigi chatting animatedly with each other and his heart skipped a beat that she hadn’t let go of the Fire Flower he gave her…
“Hey look! Shooting stars! It’s a lucky night for us!”
The quartet looked up to the darkened sky at Toad’s excited shout and true enough, there were golden streaks of light soaring across the horizon. What a breathtaking sight!
“Beautiful…” Peach breathed with admiration as she moved to sit next to Mario.
Luigi took his other side while Toad immediately plonked himself close to the group after retrieving a telescope from his backpack. They continued watching the stars make their way across the sky and Mario could’ve sworn he saw something turquoise blend in with the celestial shower before it faded just as quickly it appeared…
Mario felt lucky indeed…but it wasn’t just because of the mesmerising shooting stars they’re witnessing tonight…he had been blessed by the people he treasured close to his heart and soul and who loved him through and through…
“Hey big bro?”
Mario turned to find Luigi looking at him while gesturing to the starry sky above them with a nudge from his head, “Did you make a wish?”
Mario looked around him…to the princess still cradling the Fire Flower close to her heart and then giving him a sweet smile when he looked at her…then to Toad watching the stars through his telescope, chuckling to himself with fascination…and finally back to his little brother, his silver chain shining and peeking around his neck, gazing at him expectantly. He smiled and shook his head. He cupped the back of the younger man’s head, leaned in to kiss his forehead and gave it a nuzzle.
“I don’t need to, little bro…”
Luigi pressed his forehead slightly harder, holding onto Mario’s hand now resting against his cheek. The red clad plumber’s smile was as bright as the sun.
“I already have everything I ever want and need…thank you…”
The End…

Hi! First let me say your art is adorable! Second, this might seem like a random question, but what's the font that you used in the drawing of Peach giving Mario raspberries? I feel like I've seen it before but I can't remember where.
Thanks a lot! :)
You may have seen the font in the EddsWorld comics! It's called Edds Font :3
