COLOURISM AND BEAUTY STANDARDS

Hello, i am G.F.L.

 The reason i choose this theme was because a video in youtube ,this video make me realize that what i tough was pretty isn't ,but i was pressured to think in that way.

Even if i'm an latino the latin people who look like white people would be considered prettier and would mostly be accepted in society.The reason is all the beauty standards which always is the europeans features, white skin light ,eyes color,etc.

why a dark-skin girl is supposed to look poor and more scary? and why a someone who is white is supposed to look pure and rich?

what is colourism ?

The prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color.

You can see colourism everywhere in tv,music,etc.Even the stars we love always are light skin an is difficult to find someone who is successful and dark skinned.

In the media even if they want a black person to play a role in a movie that the cast mostly need to be black they would prefer to pick the lighter-skin person to play the main role and the dark-skin is always in a bad position.

You can hear how black rappers like jay z in his songs say things like“light skinned girls are loving me now”that make a reference to how light-skinned girls are better or rapper kodak black saying prefers light skin women and don't want to deal with dark skinned women.the media ruin the image of dark skin reflecting them as problematic and bad in general.                             In television even if the main character is black this one is light skinned and most of the time have a friend who usually is dark skinned and have a strong personality but not in the good way they make them look angry and problematic.

Actually there is a lot of issues in the way dark skinned people are treated and how girls can´t be confident in themselves because their skin is considered ugly,etc.

Charles Bukowski

Biography and presentation

Henry Charles Bukowski (August 16th 1920 – March 9th 1994) was a German-American poet, novelist, and a short story writer. His writing was influenced by the social, cultural, and economic ambient of his city since childhood,  Los Angeles.

Bukowski wrote thousands of poems, hundreds of short stories and six novels, eventually publishing over 60 books.

His best works are: Post Office (1971), Factotum (1975), Women (1978), Ham on Rye (1982), Hollywood (1989), Pulp (1994).

Bukowski is recognized for the Dirty realism, and is one of the main personalities of the genre during the 60s and 70s of the 20th century; a veteran who survived all his generation colleagues, always maintaining a cynical and combative attitude.

Dirty Realism

Dirty realism is a North American literary movement. Writers in this category of realism are said to illustrate the seamier or more normal aspects of ordinary life with unadorned language. The term formed the title of the Summer 1983 edition of Granta, for which Buford wrote an explanatory introduction:

"Dirty Realism is the fiction of a new generation of American authors. They write about the belly-side of contemporary life – a deserted husband, an unwed mother, a car thief, a pickpocket, a drug addict – but they write about it with a disturbing detachment, at times verging on comedy. Understated, ironic, sometimes savage, but insistently compassionate, these stories constitute a new voice in fiction.”

Writers working within the genre tend to avoid adverbs, extended metaphor and internal monologue, instead allowing objects and context to dictate meaning. Characters are shown in ordinary, unremarkable occupations, and often a deficit of resources and money that creates an internal desperation.

Post Office and Dirty Realism

Charles Bukowski tells us in this work another fragment of his alter ego’s life, Chinaski. In Post Office he describes the twelve years he was employed in a nasty post office in Los Angeles. The protagonist is an eternal contender for occasional jobs and a heavy drinker, as well as a bookmaker in the hippodrome. Maintains relationships with several drug addicts and nymphomaniac women while trying to realize a better standard of living, although it shows little interest in improving it. The book ends when Chinaski / Bukowski leaves the miserable security of his job, at age 49, to dedicate himself exclusively to writing.

Here I show some fragments of the novel where the character of Dirty Realism is reflected:

“ In the morning it was morning and I was still alive. Maybe I¨ll write a novel, I thought. And then I did.”

“ Courage comes from the belly - all else is desperation.”

“ It was sad, it was sad, it was sad. When Betty came back we didn´t sing or laugh or even argue. We sat drinking in the dark, smoking cigarettes, and when we went to sleep, I didn´t put my feet on her body or she on mine like we used to. We slept without touching. We had both been robbed.”

These fragments represent the decadence of the epoch, the little hope and the great disillusionment with which people coexist.

My opinion

Charles Bukowski is my favorite writer because he has the ability to make everyday life interesting and entertaining. His characters are normal people with addictions, lack of resources, no illusions and very unhappy. His way of describing and narrating makes you get into the story and  feel identified with the character. I really like it  because when I read his writings I feel very comfortable and close to the author.

Flamenco

Flamenco is a professionalized art-form based on the various folkloric music traditions of Southern Spain in the autonomous communities of Andalucia Extremadura and Murcia. Flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many non-Hispanic countries, especially the United States and Japan. In Japan, there are more flamenco academies than there are in Spain.

The typical instruments are: flamenco guitar, classical guitar,castanets,handclapping and drawer. This are the most importants.

Palos are flamenco styles, classified by criteria such as rhythmic pattern, mode,chord progression stanzaic form and geographic origin. There are over 50 different palos, some are sung unaccompanied while others have guitar or other accompaniment. These are the best known palos: Alegrias, Sevillanas, Tientos,Tangos,Tanguillos,Rumba,Soleá,Bulerias,Fandagos and Farruca.

A typical flamenco recital with voice and guitar accompaniment, comprises a series of pieces in different palos. Each song of a set of verses , which are punctuated by guitar interludes called falsetas.Flamenco uses the Flamenco mode in addition to the major and minor scales commonly used in modern Western music.Compás is the Spanish word for metre or time signature . It also refers to the rhythmic cycle, or layout, of a palo.

The Flamenco dance is known for its emotional intensity, proud carriage, expressive use of the arms and rhythmic stamping of the feet with tap dance or irish dancebut with a completely different technique. As with any dance form, many different styles of flamenco have developed.

"Flamenco puro" is considered the form of performance flamenco closest to its gitano influences. In this style, the dance is always performed solo, and is improvised rather than choreographed. Some purists frown on castanets

"Classical flamenco" is the style most frequently performed by Spanish flamenco dance companies, tending to exhibit more clearly the characteristics derived from the Seguidilla, a traditional Spanish dance. It is danced largely in a proud and upright way.

Modern flamenco is a highly technical dance style requiring years of study. The emphasis for both male and female performers is on lightning-fast footwork performed with absolute precision. In addition, the dancer may have to dance while using props such as castanets, shawls and fans.

"Flamenco Nuevo¨ is a recent style in flamenco, characterized by pared-down . Props such as castanets, fans and shawls are rarely used. Dances are choreographed and include influences from other dance styles.

In traditional flamenco, young people are not considered to have the emotional maturity to adequately convey the duende of the genre. Therefore, unlike other dance forms, where dancers turn professional early to take advantage of youth and strength, many flamenco dancers do not hit their peak until their thirties and will continue to perform into their fifties and beyond.

Rae, from My Mad Fat Diary

As a girl who has experienced many problems with his weight, this TV show really helped me in a complicated period of my life. So when I decided to write about this woman, I was actually thinking about talking of the importance of self-love and body positivity and how the society makes women believe that if they don’t have a “perfect�� body, they won’t success in life.

 This show tells us the life of Rae, a tenager that has obesity. The story begins when this girl comes out of a psychiatric hospital, a place were she tried to fight against her depression and suicidal thoughts. Next she arrived to her town and she will have to deal with problems like bullying in highschool, meeting new friends, build self-love, etcetera.

What I think is the most important point of this series is that it shows us the reality of living with obesity or with any mental illness (in special, the ones that are related with eating disorders) and how hard is to be body positive when all the society and the people who are close to you keep saying that you have to be at least similar to the “perfect” body type. As the episodes goes by we can perfectly see how insecurity is Rae about herself and how all that affects to his environment. The moments when this character is more sincere are when she is with her psychologist, Dr. Kester and when she writes in her diary (which is the most iconic object of this show). In this scenes we can see how frustrated is Rae because she really want to get over her illness  but she think she is not able to do it.

 This thought is really common when you have mental illnesses related to eating disorders because you think you can not overcome that problem but the reality is that it is all in your head. Every person is more than able to learn how to love itself regarding what the others think or what the society says we should be like.

The real change comes when she decides to tell the way she feels to his friends and family saying that she is experiencing depression, she is visiting a psychologist and that she will really need their help to overcome all that situation.

I wanted to emphasize in this exact point of the history because, in my opinion, the help of our loved ones is crucial. People that suffer from this illnesses often feel very lonely, they can also think that they are not important for anybody and that anyone can help them because they do not deserve their love or help. It is really important to make sure they know that they matter, that they are not alone because they have a lot of people that love them.

Born this way

I’m going to talk about Lady Gaga’s song “Born this way”. I choose this topic because I love the singer, the song and it’s message.

This song, “Born this way” talks about accepting yourself in the way you are. It’s cool because this song tells something that during a long time has been a taboo or has been considered something bad , like the sexuality that you have, and it tries to say that she wants respect for each other and that she wants an equal society, she talks too about the religion that everyone have and the defects of everyone. This song just looks for you to love yourself,and not worrying about your defects, because everyone is special. Gaga said in an interview that she did this album on the one hand because she wanted to make this album for her fans who she calls “ The little monsters” and with this tells that be different is not a problem, and she tried to say that they are special and don’t need to feel bad about the things that they don’t like about themselves.

This song talks too about love, respect, equality in society, no matter the color , the sexuality and the religion. Everyone can rise them challenges.

On the other hand she said that with this album she wants to explain who she is.

This song is very popular thanks to the meaning and power it has had over people. People who have been judged because of their sexual orientation or their tastes, who have been described as “weird”, people who have suffered abuse and rejection from others, etc. These people have used this song as a hymn, as a sign of liberation for a subject that was previously considered taboo.

So personally I think that the success of this song and the great popularity that it has is because it speaks of a new theme , like it’s to love oneself as it is . Finally, I think that the positive message of this song is that makes it so special and unique.

BoJack and I

Hello, first of all, my name is G. V. and i'm going to talk about BoJack Horseman. This essay is not about the tv show, it's about the character, BoJack Horseman.

I have to say something… First, i have not really finished the show… I'm sorry… but I think I have seen enough to talk about it. Second I think I am going to write it for people who have seen the show, i will explain some things if see it needful but I'm going to spoil a lot of show´s stuff. And I think here was another third thing but I´ve forgotten probably…..

BoJack Horseman, horse, actor, alcoholic… One of the best characters that have been created in television in the recents years. BoJack had his show in the 90's, he was a star; but he's not anymore. Now, 20 years later he a selfish old star in hollywood. We all know how is BoJack, selfish, obsessed with himself, not conscious of the things that he do, irresponsable…

He can be even mean and the worst person you know… but I appreciate him, yeah, I love him, I am in love with the character.

You can go and watch a lot of episodes, like when he destroy the Todd's dream of became a rock-opera star because he don't want Todd to leave him. BoJack had finally found a friend, but he betray him, and finally hurts him. Yeah, at the same time I hate bojack, because he doesn't succeed and make the other to don't succeed.

But, I as viewer of the show I know that the narcissism and the self-destruction behavior it's because of his childhood, the family problems, with him mean mother. (All this  is explained in the episode 4x02, that episode blew my mind). But at the same time I think that it doesn't justify it. BoJack doesn't became a better person in the tv show, the point is that I see him more human, I understand what he do. The way he is.

I want to say that finally in some i see myself in BoJack, in some way i see it, how sometimes I am selfish, how sometimes I hurt  the others, how sometimes I'm narcissist. How sometimes I feel miserable, that I'm a bad person and how I don't change anything

Glee

I going to talk about Glee, the TV serie where some students participate in one chorus in the institute and  they sing famous songs. At the beginning, almost nobody believed in the teacher that wanted create this club, but  bit by bit the people begin to believe in it.

The serie have six seasons with twenty two epiodes approximately.

In this serie, the songs are very important, because according happening the plot, they are singing songs suitables. Here I have three examples:

·      The first song that I going to talk is “Don´t stop believin´. In it, sing the first principals characters (They are six, Kurt, Rachel, Finn, Mercedes, Tina and Artie) We listen this song in the episode one in the first season, when the teacher of Spanish want to do the chorus in the school. At the beginning, anybody believed in him, and he wanted give up, but the five members of chorus sing this song for to show him that they can to do it.

 ·      The second song is “Somebody that I used to know”. In this song sing one the principals caracter in season three (Blaine) and him brother (Cooper) They sing this song because they have problems and they didn´t get along very well, Blaine hate him brother because he used to say what  was wrong, but after that sing this song, they make peace.

  ·      The last song is “Dream on” In this song sing the teacher of “Glee club” and him friend of childhood. In this part in season one, the two boys audition for take part in a musical and sing this song as a test, competing. At the end, the Teacher (Will) got the role, but he give the role to him friend.

TAEKWONDO

To do taekwondo many of factors are needed. For example : combat, fight,physical aspeas among thaam, ther are many points that I will explain next.

COMBAT

Combat is my favoritee part becaause I can show that I am not good gril ,that I like risk , and that I can defend when attacked . But to do this I need:

·         PSYCHOLOGY: This part is very important because if you do not have clear ideas, you will not be focused when facing the your fears  . You have to start trusting youserf because if you do not , no one will. For this you need to(100) the have people that suppor you and that encourage you when you need it.

·         FIGHT: This is where you have too put everything in test, and here is where you have to prove everything you have traained , ala the parties you miss for training , missed birthday meetings every Saturday and Sunday training…

This is where you have to prove everything.

Everything, absolutely everything, but for all this you have to like it a lot, to stick and know what you are sponging,injuries,anger,a lost day training,pain…

To fight you need to follow a shriet discipline , you(100) have to learn to fight until the last second.

·         Know yourself: You have to know yourself like nobody else does, you have to know everything you do and how to do it , know everything that is good for you. You have to put everything of your part everything ! To get what you want.

·         Look for objectives: Every time you have competition you have to know what you will need to put into practice when you are in the competition. The goal you set are things that you can(100) archieve, such as hitting two kicks at a time. The objectives are important , if you do not have goals you will have a hard time competing.

·         Get medal: If I be firs I be the campion of my category and have a gold medal, If I be the second I be the subchampion  and have a silver medal, If I be the third I be the third place and haves bronze medal.(72)

FREQUEN ASKED QUESTIONS THAT I USUALLY ASK

·         Why do you do taekwondo?

I do taekwondo because it is my way of vent, it is a way of self-control,(101) of playing, without fear of being scolded or that I may be punished.

·         Why people snowld practice taekwondo?

Because it is very fun and you learn things that can not be learned in any other way. It is also a way of relaxing and learning to control yourself, to know you, to know others…

·         How did you get to know it?

My mother wanted my brother to make a sport to defend himself, and then he joined a taekwondo course. Once I saw him, I liked it and I joined too. Since then, it is been fire years.(86)

Love

Love is a profoundly tender or passionate affection for another person or thing; but in this case, I am going to focus in the feeling towards another person. Sometimes there is a kind of love that is unattainable and it is called _PLATONIC LOVE. _I think that everyone have one; it can be a football player, actor, singer, etc… Although we are not used to be paying attention, it can also be perfectly a neighbor, a waiter, a friend, etc...

THE EMOTIONS that love provokes can be extremely powerful, as they can affect psychologically. From my point of view I don´t believe in the “perfect love” ( in relationships with family, friends and as a couple), it is true that the majority of the emotions are good feelings like happiness, tenderness, pleasure, enjoyment, relaxation, serenity(…) But you can also feel: stressed, jealousy, uncomfortable…

IS JEALOUSY A DEMONSTRATION OF LOVE? Well, it´s kind of subjective. For some people it is a great demonstration of love, because they usually think that if they do not feel jealous it is because they do not love them. I am the kind of person that thinks the opposite, it is because I associate jealousy with envy and envy is the worst feeling that someone can feel. Jealousy represents insecurities and the necessity of possession and this can lead to serious problems.

DOES LOVE CHANGE PEOPLE IN THE WAY THEY SEE LIFE? Each of us is unique, we have an own character, different reactions, behaviors… But it is true that when you are in love many of the feelings, (specially the positive ones) can intensify.

LOVE IN MOVIES VS REALITY. Cinema has created many false expectations in us:

·         Expectation: Your first kiss is wonderful, romantic and you’ll remember forever.

Reality: Your first kiss is an uncomfortable situation.

·         Expectation: You meet a millionaire, gallant, intelligent, seducer, passionate…

Reality: You meet a humble boy who worries more about the match than for you.

·         Expectation: A man is capable of stopping the traffic and says that loves you.

Reality: a man sends you a message of WhatsApp telling you if you are meeting.

·         Expectation: The most handsome and popular boy of the school invites you to go out and you discover that he is a tender and sensitive man.

Reality: you have 10% of possibilities of living that experience.

In conclusion, love is subjective; each one gives the importance that he/she wants to give, could be the highest priority or just a feeling like any other. I didn’t want to mention LGTBI issue although is a current topic, because there are several opinions and it creates a lot of controversy, but the only thing I wanted to say is that LOVE IS LOVE, it doesn´t matter who you love, you are not harming anyone, everyone make their own decisions and nobody has to judge anyone and least being disrespectful. There is a phrase that seems relevant to this topic which is: “your freedom ends where the other´s begins”. Heterosexuals, homosexuals, transsexuals, etc… WE ARE ALL EQUAL!!

The curious case of Benjamin Button

The curious case of Benjamin Button was first written by Scott F. Fitzgerald in 1922, then, in 2008 it hitted the screens thanks to David Fincher´s “fantasy romantic drama”  film adaption. In this essay, I’ve decided to make a brief review and compare the two of them, since they´re one of my favorite movies and short stories of all time; I think they managed to represent some concepts like: time, love, life, and death in such a beautifully way.

      If you haven't watched or read the story, in short, they are about Benjamin Button, who was born as an old man and died as a baby, basically, he aged in a reverse way.

First of all, I'd like to start commenting about the short story. So, Benjamin´s life was way different than in the movie. For example, he went to college, he got married with someone who wasn’t Daisy and he got to know his children. The story did emphasize in concepts like life, time and society’s apathy and shallowness. I think the fact that Benjamin had aged in a reverse way has an implicit meaning about life and time, an implicit meaning about how sometimes, perhaps, it would be better if we had a young body when we´re mentally old because in that way we could enjoy doing things we didn't know how to do before or we just simply didn´t care about. Thus, in that way we could get to enjoy of activities we actually want to do consciously. On the other hand, I really enjoyed and reflected about the way Fitzgerald represented a human being and society as well. He showed how people ought to act when they have a good impression of someone; I mean, Button was a peculiar human, the people who knew his condition were only his family, he couldn't tell anyone else because otherwise people would have treated him in a different way, maybe in a rejectional form. In that way, the author portrayed a real situation, a real issue such as the prejudices and rejection to someone who is different. Besides, some kind of apathy was depicted explicitly when Benjamin´s own family blamed him for his condition they thought his condition was a thing he did on purpose so he could get attention, which obviously wasn't the case. Through that situation the writer depicted how sometimes people won't even try to understand your situation, whether it’s because they don't want to or simply because the don´t care.

     Another example of apathy and time being portrayed was when Benjamin returned home for the first time after being away for some years. Before he had left, he looked really old and he also knew almost everyone in town, however, when he came back he looked much younger, but actually he was mentally older, so, when he was seen with his wife, people didn't realize it was him because they didn't really care anymore. And although they didn't understand the circumstances, they couldn't stop criticizing because they though Benjamin´s wife had married someone much younger. As Fitzgerald wrote “They had forgotten -as people inevitably forget”. To sum up, I enjoyed every single word the author wrote in his story and I think he portrayed some concepts like time, life and apathy in an implicit way, as I’ve already explained.

       On the other hand, when I first watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), I got mainly inspired by the way the development of the movie was complemented by a narrator, which was the voice of the main character of the movie, Benjamin. I was really captivated because it seemed like every time he talked he transmitted his thoughts, which were some kind of life-lesson he had just learned after an experienced. For example, one of the first self reflections he made was when his first close friend died. When his friend was alive she told him “we´re meant to lose people we love. How else would we know how important they are to us?” In that way she had taught him that many things at first sight might look and feel terrible; nevertheless, those things can also have a good side as well, like death. That might be the hardest way to realize how much we care and love a person, and as painful as it may seem it will also help us to understand many things about life. Some days later, she died, it was an ironic bittersweet happening for Benjamin; however, he understood the importance of loving and losing someone and for the very first time he felt that kind of emptiness, loneliness and sadness.

      As his life went on, he kept releasing other relevant lessons related to friendship, family, love, life and death.

      Yet, I think the three most important concepts the director highlighted in the movie were love, time and life. The concept of love was included because Benjamin had an awesome idyll story with his first love, Daisy, through the movie and through his life.

Although he had many experiences related to other concepts, those experiences could be described as ephemeral. And the other concepts, time and life, as far as I'm concerned, are part of the movie because every happening in Benjamin´s life occurred at a particular age, like if everything were meant to be. At a certain point, he realized the importance of doing what you want with your life, not being afraid of changes or being afraid of being too old for starting over. Perhaps, if you read this original quote of the movie you´ll understand better this convergence between the concepts of time and life I think both David Fincher and Scott F. Fitzgerald represented in such a perfectly way on their works.

“For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.”

      Another interesting scene in the movie, was when the chaos theory was explained through Daisy´s accident. Benjamin showed that if only one little particular action had been different, Daisy's life had been completely distinct too. Besides, this topic does not appeared on the short story, but for what it's worth, it makes you think about the way our actions might alter ours or someone's life.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, both the movie and the short story, had a meaningful  message about life, about creating thrilling experiences and changing as many times as you need it, that's why I always try to give the very best of me, because I know I have to be willing to look for thrilling experiences, make things happen instead of waiting for them to happen and the most important thing, to live every single day like if it were the last one.

Of course, there are also stereotypes, such as the presence of prostitutes, slaves or women without a mission in their lives, but we must bear in mind that the show is based on a medieval period. But this fact does not take away the power of our characters.
