Why did Vegeta become Goku’s Rival

Goku has had enemies turned rivals before; Tienshinhan and Piccolo are perhaps the best example of this, but also Krillian and even Yamcha. Vegeta however stands out as the only one who has stuck around in the foreground for longer than a saga or two.

I feel the answer to this isn’t anything to do with Goku, but instead Bulma. It is easy to forget for those who focus more on the ‘Z’ portion of Dragonball, but Dragonball is the story of Goku and Bulma, not just Goku.

Piccolo and Tienshinhan don’t have any kind of relationship with Bulma, Krillian’s relationship with Bulma only really started long after other characters had come along.

And Yamcha although he had a relationship with Bulma, clearly didn’t work out and as that relationship fell apart he became less and less relevant to the story. I don’t even mean once Vegeta had come along, even in the Red Ribbon Army sagas, Bulma and Yamcha had a falling out and he ended up doing very little.

Perhaps it was a blessing for Vegeta that Bulma went to Namek, because although they didn’t interact much then it made their interactions in the future trunks arc and onwards leading the ‘My Bulma!’ moment in Battle of the Gods.

A Christmas Gift I was lucky enough to receive, a SHFiguarts SSJ Blue* Vegeta to join my Freiza Saga SSJ Goku

*Vegeta is in his outfit from Resurection of F and the Universe 6 Saga (in the universal survival saga he goes back to his classic blue outfit), but his hair is a darker glossier colour much closer to SSJ Blue Evolution
