James Berg speaks of Ivory’s framing of this love scene of Clive and Maurice through images reminiscent of Michelangelo’s famous painting of God’s creation of Adam in that divine touch of the first man’s raised hand. That framing may be appropriate to the director’s structuring of the scene’s opening with two hands grasping each other without any identification of which is Clive’s or Maurice’s, followed by this verbal exchange in response to Clive’s question, “Do you realize, I would have gone through life half awake if you’d had the decency to leave me alone?” Maurice replies, “Why me? Perhaps we woke each other up.” Berg notes that “the hands are not clearly identifiable, underscoring the idea that Maurice and Clive have created each other.” - Earl G. Ingersoll, Filming Forster

RIVER: Then it’s time for the old folks home. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I get older, do you Keany?

KEANU: I’d like to maybe get a boat some day and sail around. Maybe I’ll settle down and raise a family. I’ve always wanted kids

RIVER: I didn’t know that

KEANU: You never asked, dude

RIVER: I really want kids too…
