A thousand futures flashed through Mairon’s mind then. His own. Aulë was not an unkind lord, but Mairon felt unrecognised, ignored, drowned out by the sheer number of his brethren, even though he was obviously the most hard-working and skilled. He saw himself, remaining obscure and servile forever, replaced in Aulë’s favour by the Children, whenever they came.
If he were one of Melkor’s maiar, there would be a struggle for power - he was sure that though Melkor claimed otherwise, his existing maiar would not be willing to accept a sudden newcomer. But the thought of proving his strength, with cunning or violence, sent a strange emotion through him, a delight he had not known before. It emboldened him to look Melkor in the eye.
“Your offer is very generous, my lord. Some might say too generous - I will not trade one unsatisfactory master for another, who lures me in with false promises. I want details. What do you ask of me, as your servant?”
“I’ve spent so long fighting this, pretending I could live without you..” / from Melkor
“Lord Melkor.”
Almaren was a beautiful place, but one with little privacy. Yet somehow, Melkor had a knack for catching him alone, where none of the other would know that he had come. It disturbed Mairon, and yet intrigued him. Why should he not have the attention of the greatest of the Valar? He had always felt his skill had been overlooked.
“Why do you say these things to me?” Pale eyes fixed on him, wary, but curious. “I am no different to my brethren. You have maiar of your own.”
A lie – he believed himself to far above his brothers and sisters, but he was not foolish enough to reveal it now.

Zigûr laughed, a sharp snort of derision. He would not disagree with her there – it had been almost astoundingly easy to get the King to believe whatever he dripped in his ear, whether poison or honey.
“Perhaps they could have. They did not; they accepted me gladly as their king. It was only the might of Númenor that could challenge me.” Zigûr had no regard for those lesser men. “This island was given to you not as reward, but appeasement. While your elven kin dwell in everlasting bliss, you are only given a mere copy. Tell me – what has Tuor of Gondolin or Eärendil that the sons and daughters of Númenor have not?
"There are many things which may be revealed to him," Míriel replied, scoffing softly. "He cannot decide what is truth or not by himself." Even if the Queen held her tongue around Pharazôn himself or the King's Men, around Zigûr she felt she could talk about her husband as she wished. She knew deep down that for all of Sauron's showing, he disliked him as much as she did. This, she could understand.
"Was it not by the will of Ilúvatar that this very island was raised? A gift to the Edain, for their part in the wars against Morgoth? That does not seem faithless - nor distant. Númenor already has achieved the height of her greatness. If the Edain left to Endórë were not scattered in the wilds and in villages, they could challenge you."

“I’ll hold you to that.”
His laughter was very quiet, still trying to be subtle as they moved, though he doubted very much that anyone could hear them out here. He liked his freedom too much to risk it.
“After you. Is there a path, or are we just hoping for the best?”
She smiled back at him, knowing and cheeky. Many derided her choices. From her fana, to the company kept, to even the ways she entertained herself. But it was curious how often they marveled at the secrets she kept. The parts of the world - they held at a distance -she knew with like forgotten paths and cherished shortcuts.
"If we make it out of this without being cleaved from our bodies, I might tell you."

“He need not ever know - I cannot fetch him from the Void.”
A pity, yes, but Sauron was ever an opportunist. He would not let this defeat stop him; his vision for Middle Earth was too important. In his own opinion, of course.
“I am always careful. I just need time.”
True, Tevildo was not surprised at all. If Sauron had decided to come back, something was afoot, and the ordeal could go either way.
"Being your own master does sound tempting. But here's what I learned. He doesn't like it. I would thread carefully."
Tevildo, by then, had been away from darkness for a while. He had had more than enough time to ponder over things.

"Ah. Forgive me - in Valinor, few details of that place came to us, and I was not among the warriors liberating it. I did not make the connection.”
Aha! So that was why she seemed so familiar. While they talked, he cast a part of his mind back to draw up the relevant memories - he had had so very many cases back then and he doubted he had dealt with her personally, but he always liked to be certain.
“Indeed, honesty and directness has ever served me well.” A lie, naturally, but he did agree that the latter half was true - he loved knowing everything. “But back to your work; do you have a favoured thing to collect? I am quite fascinated by old artefacts of Beleriand. I do regret I never visited it.”
“I would like to see your collection.”
He did not have permission from Celebrimbor to spend from Eregion’s treasury, but he did not doubt it would be given, and besides, he was a meticulous accountant. It would be a simple task to explain away any deficit, and he had a feeling Celebrimbor did not keep too close an eye on his books anyway.
He waited for her to lead the way outside, unblinking in the bright sunlight. His mind was brimming with excitement at the thought of new treasures to play with - he hoped he would find something that might help with his personal projects - the materials he had tested so far were lackluster, but those from Valinor or Beleriand might have different properties.
But there was another question in his mind. His gaze flickered almost imperceptibly from the cane to her leg, to her gait, and for a moment he was struck with strange familiarity. Of course, he had seen many wounded elves before (usually being the cause of such), and even in Eregion it was unheard of for someone to sustain a lasting injury from misfortune. Something about Rani, though, pricked the back of his mind like a needle. And - be he Annatar or Gorthaur - he hated having a question he could not answer.
“How did you injure your leg?” He tilted his head, staring at her with intense focus. Then, pretending he had remembered his manners, he smiled. “Ah - forgive me if that is too forward. I have not lived among elves before and among my kin it is our way to be direct. Not all of your kin find it as refreshing as Lord Celebrimbor.”

He hated many things; light, mercy, all kindness - but he hated being powerless most of all. He recoiled from the tender touch, his gaze following the path of Ringed hand with an intensity that seemed so very unnatural on Frodo’s face.
“There is no rest.” He hated the sound of his voice, unfamiliar, missing the notes of Song had up his spirit. “You mock me.”
Despair contorted his face - was it his face? - as he turned to 'Sauron'. Hate curled in his chest, like billowing smoke above a fire. He was not some lowly thrall bidden to will of his master?
And yet, such compulsion came over him. The Ring. Oh, who was the real master here? Himself, Frodo - or that little piece of precious gold?
Once he had been a servant himself; to Morgoth, whose power had been cruel, to the King of Númenor, whose lack of care had been crueller. Sauron-in-Frodo's-shape slunk across the floor to sit at Frodo's feet.
Give it to me I need it I want it I must have it Give it to me NOW.

“Be careful where you say that, little one. The King has monsters everywhere.”
Then, laughing, he launched into a tickling attack, as though he were one of those very monsters. And perhaps, he was - maybe they both were.
"I will forgive you... this time."
She squealed and laughed with Zigûr, letting him kiss the nonexistent ring upon her finger as though she were the King himself. There was an unspoken kinship between them, both beings of great power, being kept like pets by a mortal man.
"Hmmm, I want to be more powerful than the King!"

2nd Age Middle Earth thought: We know Sauron is a fan of long-range psychological attacks as he besieges a city. Do you think after 400 years of getting to know the people of Ost-in-Edhil, they were personal? Like, it’s not just Sauron camped on a nearby hill weaving a spell of fear and despair into the dark clouds that now flow out over your city, setting fell whispers loose in your dreams. It’s Sauron whom you once told, while tipsy at a Yule party 200 years ago, that you were still frightened of dogs after an incident in your childhood, or that you never felt like you’d truly lived up to your mother’s expectations, or… And now the Song he’s woven of hopeless terror has notes that sound like the howling of hungry hounds, or your mother’s disparaging sigh, or... And he’s doing that to everyone at once with all their different private doubts and fears.
Annatar: a great friend in that he’s an active listener, very good at remembering your favorite tea to drink when you’re down, or the book you mentioned reading to discuss with you a year later. Also, unfortunately, Sauron.

He let the perceived insult wash over him. No need to be concerned with the opinions of those with blind belief in the Valar - he would focus his energy on the infinitively more corruptible king.
“Honour?” he smiled, “Strength, I shall grant you, but what use is honour? Most men value gold and power. If your king was an honourable man, I should be slain, or upon ship to the custody of the Valar. You are a foolish man if you believe there is any worth in such a meaningless thing.”
A chill tinkling of metal chains echoed from the unforgiving stone. Elendil's first instinct was to retreat, but he planted his feet. He would not let his disquiet be seen by Tar-Mairon, who was now a king of ashes and air.
"My honor lies in the service of Númenor and fidelity to the Valar. True strength, and true honor, are found in upholding the gifts given to us, not in seeking further for ourselves."
The captain's gaze swept over the prisoner. "Look upon yourself. See what boundless ambition has brought you. Without measure or truth, it serves only to shatter all it seeks to grasp."

𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐓𝐒 𝐐𝐔𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐒 𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐀𝐄, 𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐇 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒. all these sentences regard the worldbuilding of stories that involve the fae, fairies, their magic and creatures like elfs. change pronouns, location and names as you see fit.
DIALOGUE SENTENCES.
"The forest whispers your name, mortal. Do you dare to answer?"
"Touch not the faerie ring, for it binds more than your mortal eyes can see."

"Do you think the wind’s laughter is merely the breeze?"
"In the twilight, between worlds, I dance where mortals dare not tread."
"The night sings to us, a melody only the fey-born understand."
"Your heart beats like a drum, calling to the ancient magic in my veins."
"Drink not from the silver cup, for once you do, your soul is ours."
"Under this moon, you are bound to our pact. Break it, and pay the price."
"Even iron cannot hold me, mortal. I slip through shadow and light."
"In exchange for your voice, I’ll grant you safe passage through my woods."
"I have no heart to give, for it lies buried in a grove long forgotten."
"Are you lost, or did you come to seek the faerie's favor?"
"Your eyes hold the curiosity of a child. Be careful, for curiosity feeds the forest."
"I know every leaf and branch of this wood; you cannot hide from me."
"Leave an offering, and perhaps the spirits will look kindly upon you."
"I was here when your ancestors first tilled the earth, and I will be here long after."
"Our laughter echoes in your dreams, but you will never recall why you wake with dread."
"Those who trespass know no mercy, unless they dare dance with me under the stars."
"Not all beauty is gentle. Will you trust the charm of a faerie’s smile?"
"Be warned, mortal: one touch from me, and your world will never be the same."
"The path you walk was woven by my kin; it leads to places your mind cannot imagine."
"These woods have memory, and they remember every broken promise."
"Tell me, do mortals still fear the old stories of the fae? Or have they grown too bold?"
"Would you trade a memory for a taste of elven wine?"
"Your heart's desire is written in the stars; let me help you reach them."
"I see more in your gaze than you know. Are you ready to face what lies within?"
"Elves age as the earth does; slow, silent, but never still."
"The silvered trees speak in riddles, but only the fey can hear their truths."
"My power lies not in magic alone but in every breath of this land."
"A human’s life is but a sigh to me. Yet here you stand, trembling before eternity."
"The roses here are more than flowers; they bleed stories of those who pluck them."
"How bold you are, to seek a kiss from a fae. Do you understand what it costs?"
"A dance beneath the moon seals fates; are you ready to join our revelry?"
"Our worlds do not blend easily. Walk softly, for you tread on sacred soil."
"Do you hear that song? It’s been sung since the dawn of time, in languages long forgotten."
"You seek answers from the fae? Then be ready for truths you may not wish to hear."
"Iron may wound us, but broken oaths do more harm."
"A bargain with me is a bond unbreakable. Will you wager your future on it?"
"The waters here reflect more than your face; they reveal the soul within."
"Elven tears are rare, but they hold more power than any gem."
"In my eyes, you see the realms of old, where legends still roam freely."
"No one truly leaves the faerie lands unchanged."
"Only a fool offers gold to a fae; we value secrets far more."
"Your world fades, but our light will shine long after your stars burn out."
"A gift from me is a double-edged blade. Are you brave enough to wield it?"
"You look at me as if I were a story; but I am more real than your breath."
"The fae care little for time. Why are mortals so obsessed with it?"
"I have danced on clouds and bathed in starlight. What do you offer in return?"
"Even the oldest trees remember their first sunrise, just as I remember every name whispered to me."
“The stars speak to us tonight, whispering secrets of forgotten realms.”
“Mortal, tread lightly; this forest holds memories of a thousand lifetimes.”
“They say fae promises are as brittle as moonlight, yet as binding as ivy.”
“I have danced on the shores of twilight and sung with the dawn; what have you seen, wanderer?”
“In my realm, time flows as the rivers do—twisting, turning, never still.”
“Do not gaze too deeply into the fae ring, for it may gaze back.”
“To enter our realm, you must leave your shadow behind; it has no place here.”
“Careful with your wishes, for in the fae lands, every word is a pact.”
“The forest breathes with us; its roots and veins are intertwined with ours.”
“Are you willing to give up your name? For only then may you cross the threshold.”
“Even the smallest of fae has a heart as fierce as the storm.”
“Hold your tongue! One wrong word here could bind you to our world for eternity.”
