“Why do you do that?” I asked Jeph, realizing he’d done the same thing to me. Seeing it from the outside was so much easier to spot than when I was the one being manipulated. “Why don’t you just say what’s really in your heart?”

Evander looked from me to Jeph, but the latter only had eyes for me.

“I forgot you like to do that,” Jeph muttered.

“Do what?” I challenged, crossing my arms over my chest. “Tell you to be honest?”

“Yes, actually.” He grinned. “How am I supposed to maintain my reputation as the stupid, heartless, pile of shit that I am if I stop telling fibs?”

“So, which of those masks are you hiding behind today?” I challenged. “The Village Idiot, playing ignorant and dumb? Or the Heartless Monster, unable to admit he has a stake in the lives of the very ones he’s gambling with?”

“Did I mention I don’t like when you do that?” Jeph asked casually, leaning back in his chair and folding his arms behind his head, eyes narrowed on me. “What would you have me say, precious? That I’m a liar and a cheat? We both already know that.”

“Truth; I saw all of that first-hand in the Dark Ages.”

“In the—What?” Evander demanded, but Jeph and I stared each other down.

“I also watched that stupid mask fall, again and again—Ara, Edith, Kipp—don’t think I didn’t see the way you softened when they were around, you…you…” I squinted at him. “You psychotic, murdering marshmallow!”

Jeph jerked in his seat, spitting and sputtering. “Marshmallow?”

“Did…did you just call the biggest asshole I know a marshmallow?” Evander asked, eyes wide, mouth agape.

“Does nobody else realize you called him a murderer in the same sentence?” Phoenix muttered.
