How light and dark play a major role in disney films. How it all connects with charcter developement and future love pairs. (obvs hint to reylo)
Surely Disney is known for producing the best kids films, well known also to adults who won’t give up dreaming (because why not). But while kids seem to enjoy the main story arcs of the beloved characters, they hardly notice the moral and theme behind the movie itself. Disney having a heavy influence on the Star Wars brand seemed to bring us again familiar themes recurring also in other movies. But how does it all reconnect with the intergalactic brand, in particular with the sequel trilogy?
-Hercules: hard to understand for kids but even harder to unsee for adults. Megara’s story seems to be one of the darkest out there. Like Ben Solo she had a rough past behind her, being left with disappointment from someone she loved. Her weakness led her to sell her soul to Hades, some sort of abuser. Who other in his vulnerability was approached by some sort of abuser? Ben Solo. And just like him she completely looses trust in people and doesn’t know how to love until they both meet the hero. Character developement through heroes love.

-Cinderella: Here we are again with one of the most classic movies out there. This time we see a character development ment through its own force. Again the similarities with Ben Solo are remarkable. Abusing mentor, leading the protagonist into believing they are unworthy of everything. Sure, Ben does not resemble Cinderella at all, but the fact that they in some kind of way are going to save themselves from the darkness is impressive. All this to reconnect to the theory that Ben solo is going to redeem himself on its own.

-Beauty and the beast: This is one of the most obvious regarding the Parallels with reylo and both characters taken singularly. Beginning from Belle and Rey, both come from an unimportant background, literally not vital to the plot. We come across this girl who can both be badass and sweet at the same time, literally the incarnation of the light, who gets captured by some kind of shadow beast. Speaking about the beast, he is someone who comes from a royal background, living surrounded by people who serve him. Both seem to be hostile to one another at the beginning, there is some sort of continuous fight going on. Then there comes the realization that they somehow share interests and familiar background.
I literally love how Lumiere at one point says:- it’s a girl!!!!- And Kylo in tfa:-what girl?-. This to show how “the girl” plays out a major role in the future of the male main protagonist. I surely do not want to predict the future of reylo, but between tlj and episode IX there seems to be the “i have to go, but we’ll see each other again” theme in which the two separate, with him finding out that he cares so much about her that he lets her go. It is necessary for the third part of both movies. And in all this in both movies the heroine goes beyond the appearance and accomplishes to see beyond the “mask”, accepting him for who he is, never giving up.

-The lion king/the lion king 2: coming to my two last favourites, I’ll start with the most obvious theme in Tlk: light and shadows, and how to each side there are associated some stereotypes. Mufasa reminds little Simba to stay in the light, because that is the safe place, while the shadows represent danger and evil. We are all induced to believe this stereotype because we see with our own eyes how the leader of the darkness, Scar, kills Mufasa. But what if, like is Sw, light and dark are only two factions, each with its point of view, from which their actions seem to be “good”? In the Lion king 2 we assist to the encounter between Kiara (the italian version Chiara literally means bright) and Kovu, she heir of the light and he heir of the darkness. Sounds pretty much like Rey and Ben. They hate each other because of what they were told from others about each other. But after spending some time together and proving the other wrong about what they assumed, they fall in love. They slowly realize that sure, they represent light and dark, but that continuing to fight against each faction does not help at all. In fact it is the other animals who pay for the fight between the two lion packs. Instead, uniting forces they understand that everything could work out, because there is no such thing as light prevailing over darkness and viceversa. Balance, that is the key. Rey and Ben both are on the path to understand that those wars do not have any sense and all they know and all they literally represent is influenced by those who surround them. But like Kovu and Kiara, when they are together, between Rey and Ben there seems to be something completely different, some sort of harmony. I’d also like to look at Luke Skywalker as Simba. The ideal of hero, the Embodiment of the light side, living upon some prejudices. He, like Luke, does not approve the connection their daughter/apprentice has with a dark side wielder. It will be the apprentice who proves the master wrong.
