With Sam away at Stanford and John sending Dean out on his own hunts, Dean finally has freedom to do things his way. Sure he’s good at hustling pool and credit card scams but there have to be more ways to make money that don’t involve him on his knees in an alley.

When he sees a model call flyer at some community college Dean figures it can’t hurt to check it out. It’s some magazine he’s very heard of and they love Dean immediately. And maybe he doesn’t love wearing makeup and the outfit is a little stupid but they are paying him so whatever. Plus it’s not hard to stand there and smolder at the camera and he’s pretty sure John will never see it.

Besides, it’s not like he actually has to touch anyone or let someone touch him. He’s just gonna stand there. Apparently that’s enough for this magazine. Looking at the pictures on the computer after the shoot, Dean can admit he looks pretty hot. Maybe this can be a regular thing. That’s when the art director tells him the “boys” are going to go crazy for him.

Dean looks around at the other waiting models, their wardrobe and the two in leather cuffs and realization comes crashing down on him. Before he can protest they hand him a check and push him out the door.

XY is a gay magazine. And Dean is about to be their cover boy.

When ever people ask when I believe the subtext of Dean’s bisexuality was brought into the show, I tell them the Pilot episode. And when they go on to ask when it was seriously for really real brought into the show, I tell them again that it has been a part of the character from the start.

I’ve talked about the parallel flirting scenes in the episode many times (we have a scene of Dean flirting with a woman – Jess – that he objectifies and then the inverse parallel of the scene in which he flirts with a man – a cop – and casts himself as the sexual object in precisely the same way - by drawing attention to the chest. Note also that ‘the smurfs’ is slang for 5-0, making it a double entendre. Bear in mind that he’s not flirting with either with intent, but because he’s working them). Dean also checks out not one but two police officers bending over cars on the bridge scene. But that’s not what I wanted to talk about today.

What I wanted to point out was the gas station:

First, we have only Sam in the frame, inside the car. Notice that the window above the car reads “brake relining”. Note also the sign that says “tires - lubrication” above the mechanic working on a car behind the fuel pumps with red oil canisters around him.

Then, there’s Dean. Who saunters out with a goddamn candy roll in his mouth.  With the mechanic bending down behind him. With a sign (Ammco) covering the window, suddenly, so that it spells ‘bi’. With ‘bi’ written fucking right behind him. Because the scene with Dean blowing a candy roll was not homoerotic enough.

Note how Dean’s candy roll is exactly the size to fit into the hole of the car tyre behind him next to the mechanic. Dean then bends over the back of his car with the gas pistol, which is rather suggestive.

When we leave the scene, the Ammco sign is again absent from the window and nothing spells ‘bi’ because both brothers are in the frame.

The subtext of Dean’s bisexuality in the Pilot was a collaborative effort: Eric Kripke wrote it in, Jensen Ackles acted on it, David Nutter’s direction emphasized it, and Jerry fucking Wanek spelled it out for us.

happy new year, supernatural fandom! thought i’d make a bit of an intro post to my project, since i’m a few posts in now.
