The Highway of Tears 

Between Prince George and Prince Rupert in British Columbia, Canada there is a stretch of road that has become known as “The Highway of Tears”. It has been estimated that since 1989 over 30 women have gone missing or have been found raped and murdered along the Highway. 

Due to high levels of poverty and the remoteness of towns and villages, many in the area rely on hitchhiking to get around. The RCMP believe that this is how the killer(s) are finding their victim, however little has been done to provide the mostly indigenous population with any transport or infrastructure. 

The RCMP has a long history of systemic racism against First Nations and Indigenous peoples and the Highway of Tears is a perfect display of this. The RCMP were extremely hesitant to investigate the Highway of Tears, that was until they uncovered a white victim. 

Off the back of this they have now launched ‘Project E-PANA’ but many fear it may be too little too late. The investigation was initially brushed off due to the majority of the victims being First Nations or Indigenous.  

It is unknown whether The Highway of Tears is the work of one serial killer or whether Canadian authorities are dealing with multiple perpetrators.

“I have spent days trying to figure out what I want to say. I have crumpled up dozens of pieces of paper and disregarded even more ideas. I have thought about what I could say that might make people feel just a little bit better. But I have come to the realization that it really doesn’t matter what I say. Because there is nothing I can do to take away any of the pain and destruction I have caused. I absolutely loved my parents and had no reason to kill them. I had no reason to dislike, kill or try to kill anyone at Thurston. I am truly sorry that this has happened. I have gone back in my mind hundreds of times and changed one detail, one small event so this never would have happened. I wish I could. I take full responsibility for my actions. These events have pulled me down into a state of deterioration and self-loathing that I didn’t know existed. I am very sorry for everything I have done, and for what I have become.“

Statement read by Kipland Kinkel, perpetrator of the Thurston High School Shooting to his victims in court. Fifteen year old Kinkel murdered his parents in their home on the 20th of May 1998 and drove to his former school Thurston High the following day and murdered two students and injured a further twenty five more.

Evidence from the infamous 1954 trial of Dr. Sam Sheppard, accused of killing his pregnant wife Marilyn, was donated to Ohio’s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 2012. A featured item is the medical model showing her devastating blunt-force injuries. Sheppard was found guilty but in 1966, the Supreme Court ruled he was denied a fair trial and overturned the conviction, blaming the sensational case’s “carnival atmosphere”. He was later fully acquitted. Marilyn’s murder remains officially unsolved.

There is a third, grey area of a ‘mixed’ category and that happens because of individual personality differences or they’re going through a psychological transformation.  Another reason is it’s hard to fit serial killers in a neat little box.

“We don’t hold her responsible, the same as we wouldn’t blame a rabid dog for biting someone. She is ill and to a large degree, not responsible for her actions. But her mental disorder should have been recognized much earlier.“

Folie à deux is a rare disorder which causes delusions of one individual to transfer into another. One shocking case of the disorder is that of Ursula and Sabina Eriksson,who are Swedish twin sisters. There isn’t much known about their upbringing other than they were born in 1967 and had a poor childhood. On 17 May, 2008, they traveled to Liverpool and were kicked off a bus because of their bizarre behavior. They then decided to walk down the motorway, disrupting traffic. Police were called to the scene.

“We say in Sweden that an accident rarely comes alone. Usually at least one more follows – maybe two,” Sabina cryptically said to one of the arriving officers. Suddenly, Ursuala ran out into the oncoming traffic of the motorway and her sister followed. Both were hit by cars but managed to survive. Both women were taken to hospital, where Ursula had to remain for a few weeks, while Sabina was sent to police custody where she pleaded guilty to trespassing and was immediately released without a proper psychiatric evaluation.

On 19 May, 2008, two men, Glen Hollinshead and Peter Molloy, saw Sabina walking her dog in Fenton. They stopped and chatted with her and she appeared to be friendly but extremely paranoid. She was asking the men for directions to a B&B and explained she was trying to find her sister. Glen took pity on Sabina and offered her a room at his own home which she accepted. When the three arrived at his home, her odd behavior contained . She offered the men cigarettes and then snatched them out of their mouths, claiming they were poisoned, and she continually looked out the window as if she was worried she may have been followed. 

Peter left the home that night and Sabina and Glen went to sleep. The following day, Glen called the hospital in an attempt to locate Sabina’s sister. In the evening, he went to a neighbor’s home to ask him for some tea bags before going back inside his own home. Moments later, the neighbor saw Glen staggering outside, saying “she stabbed me,” and then falling to the ground, dead. Glen had been stabbed five times by Sabina, who fled the house with a hammer.

A passing motorist witnessed Sabina hitting herself on the head with the hammer and attempted to intervene but then she turned on him and struck him with the hammer and a piece of roofing tile she had produced from her pocket. The police had been called by Glen’s neighbor and a chase ensued. The chase came to an end when Sabina jumped from a 40 ft bridge and was taken to hospital with broken bones. 

After being discharged from the hospital, she plead guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility and received five years imprisonment. She was released in 2011.

What created the Killer:  As a child he feared Doctors and anything that involved them. Some children who knew him forced him to look at a skeleton but rather then fearing it Holmes was morbidly fascinated with it.

Holmes did serve his death sentence.

Today, we honor Lynda Ann Healy who was only 21 years of age. She was a psychology major preparing to graduate that semester. Lynda loved working with handicapped children and got up at early every day to report on the skiing conditions for local radio.
