okay what is the opinion if, when the punderstorm cleared and the team see yang/blake kissing, it focuses on ruby being uncomfortable and jaune commenting "can you guys just hurry up" or something because both really want to just leave and it helps set up ruby's explosion later because "btw we're *so* happy for you!" doesnt really land when "i've been trapped here for like 40 years and went kind of insane" jaune says he's been waiting for them

i really dont think he had them on the brain while he was trapped here.

Started thinking about rwby and how they use certain moments from myths/stories for characters but don't build them well super often.

Like jaune lying to get into Beacon is clearly intending to be taking influence from Joan of Arc and how she faked her gender to fight, but the important context of her story is absent in canon and largely jaune faking his way into Beacon is barely used outside of causing drama in volume 1.

Pyrrha being based on Achilles and thus sharing his fate but also not being built as a character beyond her tragedy and how she can serve jaune as a character.

Like I'm someone who legitimately wants more content from the original stories of these characters to be used in canon, I think the parallels are so much fun and adore them. But so often they drop the ball on handling them or use elements that really don't work well because of how they decided to implement them.

sometimes i wonder about the books that apparently shat all over sun wukong and wonder if i should read it before going "no i like him in the canon material" and pretending the books dont exist

really 80% of the in-fighting is caused by fans treating the characters as real people who have committed real crimes vs fictional tools to serve some kind of narrative purpose

@thatguythatdrawsalot just made a post about ruby's design and pointed out that vol 2 ruby's outfit didn't have her emblem and it got me thinking

ruby should have offered her cape instead of her emblem in vol 9

more specifically, i like the idea that ruby saw the new cape in the box with her atlas outfit, hesitates, then keeps her old weathered one

and THEN offers her cape and calls it "it represents a mother's love" or protection or something

and now she's stripped of her (arguably) more iconic symbol and (metaphorically) looks more bare and unsafe (no longer has a giant cape to cover her like a blanket)

and then when she's reborn, she's got her cape back and it's fully patched up and healed through recalling her mother loving her
