Education and You!

My mother worked so hard that she would come home crying each night. I would have to help her remove her shoes and soak her feet, just so that she could stand up and take a shower. She faced all of these trials, to do what every day? At the end of every day, she would simply start the process over again. This meant working 10, 12 and sometimes 15 hours a day, trying desperately to make ends meet. Ultimately, she had to quit working; her body couldn’t take it anymore. I vowed for that never, to be my life. I knew I needed a degree. This article is not another sob story, or tearjerker that is meant to pull at your heartstrings and guilt you into getting an education. In truth, I am not attempting to anything more than share my story. After all, nothing that I say- or anyone else for that matter- will “convince” someone to do something that they wish not to do. Rather, I hope by sharing my story, someone can be inspired.

Why did I need a degree? The choice was always simple. If I wanted to leave the ghetto and poverty, I needed to work hard and get my education. I was the first generation in my family, to attend college and graduate. I did this because I saw no other choice. My mom couldn’t move away because she failed to receive her education and she instilled in me, the drive necessary to get an education for myself.

Logically though, an education meant that I had potential. Think about this… A person, who only has a high school diploma, is reduced to taking menial jobs that pay- at most- 10 to 12 dollars an hour. For a yearly salary- supposing that I never miss a day of work, and work a full 40 hours a week- I will make about 19, 000 to 23000K a year. At face value, the number seems plausible and quite nice. However, I have never taken face value. Thus, I did some math:

Rent: If I shopped around and got a one bedroom at $500, would be $6K a year.

Salary: $13K to $17K.

Food: Thinking about the market and how I love to eat, I would say about $3 to 6K a year.

Salary: $7K to $11K.

Transportation: I knew that I hated the bus so I needed a car, insurance and gas money.

Salary: Gone!

What am I supposed to do about clothing, furniture, or anything else like a savings account? Therefore, an education is crucial to survival in society. But even if the numbers’ game is not appealing- though it was for me- let’s look at the market trends and survival.

If I wanted a job that would pay decently and treat me with an ounce of respect, I needed an education and a degree. Let me say that, not all minimum wage workers are treated poorly. Nor am I claiming that bosses are inherently evil. However, I have been a high school worker, I have seen high school grads working in companies with me, and I have seen their treatment. Far more often than not, they are treated without proper respect, dignity and trust. Not to mention, high school workers are released quicker than anyone else. Thus, there is very little job stability when an individual doesn’t have a degree.

It was sad but true; a simple piece of paper meant a better life for me! The final straw, though, was not my numbers game, it was not the treatment quality, nor was it the job stability. I got pregnant right after high school. An education not only became my only choice, but it became my life’s mission.

As much as I love my mother, she could not prove to my sister that an education is important, because she herself didn’t have one. I did not want that to be my fate, with my son. I needed to be a role model for him and for other children in our neighborhood. They needed to see that, yes, you can make a difference and attain a better life! I needed to be the example, the exception and now, for my son, the rule.

Why do you need a degree? As a society, we need to move towards the betterment of our people, all people. The world is changing rapidly and in order to be competitive, a degree is no longer a choice. It is a necessity. A degree gives an individual options; it opens doors that would not have been there otherwise. A degree gives financial stability and job possibilities. A degree, above all else, gives hope.

I heard that even engineering graduates shift their career to medicine through GAMSAT. I was curious to know how they felt about this test. I did a research on the forum and gleaned good information. I would like to share the same here.

The result is exciting. An overall survey says, Most of the best medical students are good engineers.

I would like to be more specific how the candidates felt about this standardized test. I have collected few responses from the engineering candidates who have gone through the GAMSAT.

GAMSAT has three unique sections that test your intellectual property. It needs only the basic subject knowledge.

Now, I would like show the information based on each section.

Humanities and Social science – Section 1:

Engineering helps a lot in Section 1 and 3 mainly with the problem solving questions. Section 1 has questions related to humanities and social science. This section contains many general knowledge questions. Also it contains questions that test your reasoning and analyzing ability.

The problem solving and analytical skills from engineering were generally useful for the section I. Speed reading was also a great advantage for this section . Engineers are habituated to speed readers already. They don’t need to find difficulties in reading page long passages.

What I Did with My Criminal Justice Degree

I received both an Associate and a Bachelor Degree related to Criminal Justice. I graduated with honors for both degrees. I had plans on either becoming a probation officer or a correctional officer. As it turned out, I am not using my Criminal Justice in any manner which I originally intended.

Associate of Justice System, Corrections from Lorain County Community College. I received my Associate Degree in 1997. I had started this degree with the intentions of becoming a probation officer, but as I went through my studies, a job as a correctional officer sounded more appealing. I had also spent my internship working at a battered women’s shelter, so that area held some promise as well.

I moved from Elyria, Ohio to the Athens, Ohio area that summer. In order to become a correctional officer for a state prison, I would have to become certified by the State of Ohio. I took the testing, was certified and put on the correctional officer list for a year. I only listed 1 prison in my area that I desired to work at, and unfortunately the facility did not have any openings during that year.

There was a new multi-county jail facility being completed in our area. There was also talk of a new boot camp soon to come. I really wanted to work at the boot camp, but it was never built. To work at the County Jail, I had to take a short class to become certified on the county level. Upon completion of the class, I was immediately called for an interview with the new County Jail.

I declined the interview. After attending the certification class, I was unsure I really wanted to be a correctional officer anymore. I decide to pursue a Bachelor of Criminal Justice at Ohio University.

Bachelor of Criminal Justice from Ohio University. Ohio University is more of a liberal arts college, so the coursework for the Criminal Justice Degree was vague. I couldn’t decide on a job I would like to use my degree. After a year, I decided I would just finish what I started and maybe never use the degree for its intended purpose.

However, I learned a lot during my coursework for a Criminal Justice degree. I took a lot of political science and psychology classes which helped me to communicate with people of differing beliefs, and not just in politics. I took some business management classes which help me to work with others in nearly any job environment. I had several interviewing classes which not only helped me to interview for employment, but in ways to ask people for information I need to know.

Some information, such as Constitutional Law and forensics I have learned simply for the sake of knowledge as it turns out. Unless I have a change of heart, I will never need to use these.

One thing I learned that will stay with me for the rest of my life is self-defense. It is good to know that I have a chance if I am assaulted, even if the perpetrator is a lot bigger than me or armed with a knife or gun. This is a skill every woman should have.

What I am currently doing with my Criminal Justice degree

Currently, I am not working in the criminal justice field. I am a legal secretary and the office I work in does not do criminal law. I am also a freelance writer as a second job. But I still work on Court documents and I have learned the importance of confidentiality issues. I developed pride in myself and my work, as I was the first person in my family to get a college degree and I graduated both degrees with honors.

I could have become a probation officer, a correctional officer or even a peace officer among other things. But I choose a much calmer life for my family. Though I am not utilizing my degree to its fullest, it was definitely not a waste because I learned so much to help me in many other areas of my life. I am happy that I got my Bachelor of Criminal Justice Degree.

Campers arrive on Sunday and leave on Thursdays. Upon arrival there will be ice-breaker games so that campers can get acquainted. There will be other social gatherings for campers throughout the duration of the camp session. Campers are supervised by Resident Assistants when they are not in classes.

Young Western riders will arrive at camp and meet with their instructors clarifying their goals for the summer. The structured curriculum includes the basics of western horsemanship position. Riders are given the option to select a focus of western pleaser or a speed option. During their stay at camp rider will compete with their peers in speed events, trail, or western pleasure. Speed events include barrel racing and bole bending.

The curriculum addresses eventing, dressage, hunt seat equitation, flat work, and riding over fences. Upon arrival at camp English riders clarify their desired goals for camp.
