Could she be a good person? It was a thought that Faenethra always shot down. Going out of her way to help others... It felt impossible for her. When people saw Faenethra, they only saw a drow. Some were wary, some even attacked. So she hardened her skin. She never bothered trying to help others because they didn't want her help.

But saving the grove, helping these refugees... It filled her with a joy she had not felt before. Faenethra wanted to keep helping people. She wanted to be good. And maybe it was all just a foolish fantasy, a product of wishful thinking and the high of this one heroic act. But it got her thinking... She liked helping people. She wanted to be good, like Vera, like Orfir, like Cass... Like Wyll.

She had been glancing over at the lone man by the river when Caasimir approached her. Though Faenethra had enjoyed the party - she even played a song or two on her lute just earlier - she was starting to get wary from all of the conversation and socializing. She wanted to either be on her own or with just one other person whom she liked. And she liked Cass.

" Me? " she echoed with just a hint of a smile tugging at the edges of her lips as she accepted the offered cup. " I...don't understand. Vera is the one who cut your hair, gave you a name... I can't imagine I have been much help to you. " Or perhaps she just wasn't giving herself enough credit. Regardless, Faenethra couldn't have been that much help. Sure, she helped them sneak inside the goblin camp - goblins don't tend to doubt an assertive drow - but... Everything else was an equal effort.

She took a sip from the cup. " Besides... Everything you've done up until now is your own achievement. I told you to be what you felt was right... And you have. "

Cass had never felt so… clean.

His hands, his mind—his soul, perhaps. It was a foreign sensation, like waking from a fever and finding the world kissed with spring air. He hadn’t known himself long, true, but something deep in his chest had begun to glow with a quiet certainty. Goodness. It felt unnatural in theory—yet in practice, it was exhilarating. Righteousness, he’d discovered, was a balm. Saving the grove had not only been unthinkable—it had been impossible, had you asked him days ago. And yet… they had done it.

Now, the tiefling celebration was beginning to slow, the climax passed and the wine flowing softer. Orfir was chatting rather than shouting lyrics. Vera and Shadowheart had vanished into the dark somewhere, and Gale had spent most of the evening exchanging bashful glances and private smiles with Cass.

But there was still one soul left unspoken to.

Faenethra.

And, as fate would have it, she was the one person Cass had much to say to.

He approached her with that ever-present princely smile—warm and smooth as silk, two cups of weaker wine half-full in his hands.

“Neth,” he greeted, voice soft and elegant. “I wished to thank you for this.” He offered her a cup with a soft chuckle. “I know it was a team effort, yes—but your presence has been a great help to my unfortunate affliction.”

He tilted his head slightly, tone sincere.

“I daresay I haven’t the faintest idea where I’d be without you. Likely in a ditch. Or worse—wasted, singing shanties full voice like poor Orfir.”

THE LAST OF US S02E01 | Future Days

It hurt, it physically ached to see such a twisted expression on her friend's face, the bloodlust in his eyes... It felt like possession. Like this was a completely separate entity taking control of Puck and filling him with malice. But Faenethra knew that wasn't true. Puck had already told her that he lived with this terrible voice in his head.

Earlier that same day, she saw Puck smile. How was she expected to believe this was the same man? Spine-chilling cackles, sickly sweet words, and a yellow gaze that pierced right through her. It wasn't Puck. At least, it wasn't the version of himself that he tried to be. Faenethra could see it, how he tried to be so gentle with everything he did... Now she understood. This feral beast lay just below his skin, so every careful touch Puck gave was to keep the monster at bay.

She will need a very thorough explanation once he comes back...

" Never, " she replied in a low, definite tone. It would ruin Puck if he woke up and found her blood on his hands, her body torn to shreds and neck wrung... Faenethra stared down at the creature, refusing to tear her eyes away lest he break free from his restraints. Her fingers twitched for her sword. Just in case. " What are you? What is he? " she continued. Faenethra doubted the beast would answer, but... She had to pass the time somehow.

            𝐃𝐄𝐅𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐓  ,  𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐓  𝐂𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐋𝐄𝐒  ,  writhing  against  the  bindings  on  the  forest  floor.  Tight  &  tough,  yes,  but  inevitably  breakable  around  the  wrists  of  a  god  brute  like  him.

           ❝  You  may  try,  little  fighter  .  .  .  ❞  His  voice  was  a  sickly  sweet  purr,  a  low,  husky  sound  brimming  with  anticipation.  He  wanted  her  to  try.

           ❝  My  bloodied  hands  will  clasp  your  neck  all  the  same.  ❞  They  will  claw  through  your  flesh.  Crack  the  bone.  Crush  your  windpipe.  You  will  croak  for  me.  Gasp  your  last.  Choke,  cry,  beg,  bleed,  die,  die,  die,  diediediediediediedie  ⸻

His  yellow  eyes,  previously  glassy  &  now  hauntingly  clear,  glittered  with  mischief  as  he  craned  his  neck  to  peer  up  at  her  from  where  he  lied,  belly  flat  on  the  ground.  For  a  rabid  dog,  he  seemed  all  too  aware  of  his  surroundings.

He  licked  his  lips,  corners  of  his  mouth  twitching  up  into  a  grin.  ❝  Come  closer,  dear.  I  will  do  it  softly.  ❞
