I do agree that some of them are being written as gender bent men but with one glaring difference; those kind of MLs i.e the cold rich jerk CEOs, the ruthless princes etc all start that way but once they fall in love become highly devoted and put the FL as their n1 priority in most cases. But here we get FLs who never go through that transformation, it's either the ML is madly in love with them from day 1 for unknown reasons especially for the level of obsession they show or he again starts as an asshole and very quickly loses all brain function with love as his only driving force, some dramas go even further and base his entire personality on being in love he doesn't show any complexity or have any storylines that don't revolve around the romance (which is fine if these weren't dramas that are supposedly about 2 individuals and their relationship).
But the women? They're generally completely detached from start to finish very rarely showcasing even a small fraction of the adoration and effort given to them. It's "me me me" all the time but when the narrative supports that as if that's the way it should be then we have a problem. Just in these last six months I can name at least 12 dramas Cdramas that fall into one or 2 of these categories off the top of my head.
And again like you reiterated give us women with their own stories, powerful women, flawed women but if you're telling a love story, that also means women who are equally emotionally invested, women who take accountability, fictional romance in overwhelming cases needs that two way street of emotional engagement and devotion. And acting like we as women just need to sit pretty in a relationship never investing ourselves and working for it as some perfect hot dude worships us for unexplained reasons is not only stupid but quite insulting.
Can someone please explain to me what is "cute" or exciting about an attempted rapist getting someone pregnant without their consent?
Because these posts about Song Yiting are honestly creeping me out. She attempted to drug and sexually assult a man she claimed to like. She found out it was her sister's fiance and just kept going. She kept undressing him even as he begged her to stop. Somehow because she's female, it's okay?
Making a man pregnant who did not consent and obviously had no idea he could even get pregnant is also basically rape.
Why are people cheering for this?

I really feel like I can overlook any plot hole, love any overused trope, and endure any ridiculous plotline as long as I can emotionally contect with the characters. As long as they feel genuine, I'll follow them anywhere
#I can do that if it's a romcom#but no matter how much I like the characters I need a minimum of logical plotting and behavior#I try not to care but it completely takes me out of the story

i genuinely do just think it's transparently regressive in a weird turnaround way that the only way the people of this website enjoy a het ship is if the ENTIRE focus is on how awesome and hot and perfect and unstoppable a woman is and how the man is like there to make googly eyes at her and get like nonspecifically dommed-by-implication and we never get ANY thoughts about what she sees in him or what emotional needs are fulfilled for her besides the implication that what every woman wants is someone whos obsessed with her. you people love to find new creative ways to ignore womens interiority
#100% cosigned#I always say this but it's such a shallow performative take on romance and female characters#that somehow ends up centering the men because they're the ones having ALL the feelings#it's not empowering to see women act like romantic love is beneath them and that their love interests are pets instead of partners

Yeah I saw that she impregnated him without his knowledge and consent and everyone is going "you go girl" umm no. You don't go girl that's so incredibly gross coupled with the way she was ready to commit rape and then blackmailed the man who almost accidentally got assaulted by her I am very much side-eying the writer.
Just from the way they wrote the FL I highly doubt this is a dig at the fake girl power BS it's more likely them thinking they're being subversive and preaching equality.
What they fail to comprehend almost every single time is that that means well written characters who happen to be women not female characters who take the mantle to treat the men horribly in turn encroaching on their rights and constantly displaying behavior that if the tables were turned would have everyone praising it in the name of pseudo agency and autonomy instantly up in arms and calling for the writer's head. Compounded by the fact that they have the male characters act like this is completely normal, their fault and how it should be it becomes much worse.
I feel like this conversation has been had in one form or another at least 5 times in just the last 6 months in relation to cdramas, this, whatever the hell Feud thought it was doing, Perfect Match thinking it's funny when men are beaten and abused by their wives, Filter also thinking it's funny that the FL almost drove the ML to literal insanity with her face changing antics, there's a very clear pattern emerging here and it is not pretty.

I was chatting with @ambitionsgreaterthan and realized something that actually makes me forgive anything and everything in ADWAD because it’s such a brilliant concept/twist:
It’s not just that Yimeng and the scriptwriter themselves weren’t real. It’s that NONE of them had any volition, NONE of them made any changes. Everything, including Nan Heng supposedly changing the script and his fate was in the ACTUAL script, written by the writer we see at the end.
Talk about Calvinist Predestination taken to extreme I am screaming!
#a dream within a dream#so everything he did and she did was written in the script#which is brilliant but also kind of????#and I do not think most people seem to realize this

Oh I was not watching since I saw the start and it did not seem like my kind of romance but if this is the way it is maybe I should be.
I love her!!! So much common sense aaaaa! (@ambitionsgreaterthan are you watching?)
I mean look at her, she's amazing. But also - he apologizes as well and explains as well!

This is coming to Netflix later in the month!!!
What is it? A teacher and an illiterate gigolo YES PLEASE I don't know if it's gonna be a romance or "they better each other platonically" (tho the latter seems unlikely) or what BUT I WANTTTT

Look at me watching jdramas like it's 2007.
ETA: no idea what the characters' ages are supposed to be but ML actor is 22 and FL actress is 37 so it's def gonna be an age gap romance. MMM

mr queen was so funny. they literally put a man's soul and consciousness inside a joseon era queen who fell in love with another man and at the end they were like 'the man's consciousness/soul didn't fall in love with the other guy, it was the queen's body. hope that helps <3' what the fuck were they on about

Head Over Heels is so good so far and I keep being in love with the writing. The constant theme of what someone does when they see a stranger crying (or even not crying): Shaman Mom saving little crying Seong-a, Ji-ho seeing Seong-a intimidated in the cafeteria and befriending her, Gyeon-woo standing beside the crying woman going through his garbage, the male shaman hugging Seong-a because she doesn't cry when she should, and the difference between shamans Seong-a and Yeom Hwa being that one wants to make Gyeon-woo cry.
And the characters! They are good without being paragons. The teenagers act like teenagers even though they have some very serious things happening in their lives. And I like the ambiguity in their actions too. Seong-a is clearly a good person, she helps people she isn't attracted to, but yes, she is excited that saving her crush can involve touching him and when she cried about the discarded lipchap it was because she felt rejected romantically and because she couldn't protect Gyeon-woo anymore. And even though I would be more forgiving in a high school drama, they are intelligent.
It's beautiful. I love it. I cannot wait for next week.

you used to be able to go onto a tag after finishing a movie and see all sorts of gifsets. now you have to comb through reader insert fanfiction. we used to be a society
#literally#I'm sooo tired#I finish a show and go to read meta or look at gifsets#and it's just endless self insert fanfic of people fucking the characters#stop the count#and if the way this stuff has taken over fandom isn't emblematic of the way even shows and romance are written I'll eat my hat#it's all one giant related blob
