Vaudeville performance based on the old English ballad "Death and the Lady". The performance was about the evils of card playing and alcohol.

Another example of Renaissance painting with the Death and the Maiden theme. The theme itself is also an allegory of the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. Persephone was abducted by Hades, the king of Hell, and forced to live with him in his underground kingdom. In this picture we have Death pulling the Maiden by her hair, while the Maiden is pleading to be let go.

Similar in theme to the Death and the Maiden genre, but with a bit of horror (as if death isn't scary enough). Death will take you at any time, no resisting please!

Here is another example of the Death and the Maiden theme. Here death is not skeletal nor menacing, but rather is an example of death coming peacefully during the girl's sleep.

This fresco was commissioned for a Dominican monastery in Bern Switzerland containing the Dance of Death motif along with the Death and the Maiden motif. The original was created by Niklaus Manuel in 1516/1517 but was destroyed in 1660. This is a copy done in 1649 before the destruction by Albrecht Kauw.

This motif was very common in Renaissance art. Although the theme had been seen in art before, it was during the Renaissance that erotic subtext was added. Death and sex were darkly bound. It is also a transition out of the Dance with Death motif that was also a popular theme.
