#4. Episode 176 - Moving on is never the only option

Many of us believe that moving on is cool; and that those who refuse to move on and dwell on the past are a bunch of idiots. The actual matter of fact is that some people need much more time than some others to process their painful past experience. Moreover, some others should never force themselves to move on, or they'll sustain even more irrevocable psychological damage.

Rafael's brutal backstory takes an even more hedious turn when Dartz shows up to force him to move on. Rafael had been holding on to the hope that, if he is a survivor of a maritime disaster that had claimed dozens of lives, any one of his missing family might also be still alive somewhere. Dartz burns his last thread of hope by fabricating the evidence of the death of Rafael's family--by burying two juvenile skulls below the tombstones of his family and getting him to dig the ground himself. This is how Dartz draws the so-called "darkness in the heart" from Rafael.

Atem swiftly notices the contradiction that the skulls of MIA victims shouldn't be found in the ground. Rafael was, however, was too heartbroken at the time to notice the contradiction.

The darkness in Rafael's heart is resolved when Atem gives him a message that it is okay not to move on. The Seal of Orichalcos even dissolves when Rafael is reassured that it is the right path for him to believe his family and his favorite Guardian friends will always stay with him in whatever shape or form.

#3. Episode 167 - When you need someone with power to listen to you

Amelda/Alister is one of the characters who have the best portrayal in the entire Yugioh franchise combined. I love how the Doma arc portrays the way he projects his despair, agony, and frustration towards Kaiba brothers.

Although Amelda longs for a revenge and the total destruction of the entire humanity, what he actually needs is anyone with power to listen to him. This ulterior motive begins to reveal itself when he gets Seto to go through a hallucinatory firsthand experience of many war orphans. At the end of the re-match with Kaiba, Amelda even gives Seto a "chance" to prove his ability to save Mokuba from certain death. He wouldn't even have bothered to do so if he only saught to avenge Kaiba brothers. Deep inside Amelda knows that it is pointless to avenge Seto who isn't responsible for the death of his family; and that Seto is courageous and determined enough to make any actual difference once Amelda's desperate outcry is heard.

Is it true that in the manga joey died for real and didn't come back. But in the anime it did. So the dsod follow the manga or the anime? Because also in the manga pegasus died but in the anime they made him alive still I think in the dsod pegasus is dead. So how joey survived? Don't get me long I love this character. And supplementary question: what is your favorite ship ranked in ygo and why?

In order:

1. Joey does come back in both adaptations. The anime adds a more realistic medical detail: his vital signs are resuscitated by an emergency medical staff member in the Battle Ship. He goes through a brief period of coma until the near end of the semifinal match between Atem and Kaiba. This detail is what the original manga misses out. The manga just shrugs and goes "Nah don't sweat it Joey is dead for now but he's a true Duelist physically and mentally strong enough to revive himself" ;-D

2. I'm a total sucker for prideshipping. The pairing has been my number one since around the release of the DSOD. Even before that, I had thought the ship dynamics were quite valid. The ship was my second to third favorite when I first stepped into this fandom. After all, nearly every anime fandom pairs archrivals with each other X-p Not just that; by clashing with each other, Atem and Kaiba help each other grow as Duelists and as human beings. These dynamics are even more reinforced by so many "fan service scenes" featured in the original anime arcs. And then 12 years later, the DSOD comes out. No further explanation needed. We all know how it goes :))))))))

Heyy I just wanna ask this question

do you think Kaiba liked atem since he met him ?

I believe it's probably around the Duelist Kingdom arc. How the first match between Seto and Atem's ended up could've also been seen as a product of just an unlucky day, depending on how Kaiba made of the loss. After all, card games before the Duelist Kindom arc were not as complex and strategically demanding. Yet, Seto may have still wanted a re-match because it was a humiliating loss.

Then, Atem once again proved his ability as a Duelist. Atem's strategic moves were quite impressive, even in the context of the bullshit level of the yet-to-mature card game rules at the time. This match is quite likely when Kaiba started to acknowledge Yami as worthy of a true rival. Besides, Seto owes the rescue of Mokuba, Kaibacorp, and himself to Atem at the end of the arc. To him, Atem isn't just a strong opponent; he's one of the most righteous people Seto's ever met in his life.

Kaiba's tragic backstory and the resulting cynicism often prevent him from accepting other people's favors or acknowledging righteous acts as they are. Atem is probably one of only few individuals who broke the barrier that Seto set as a defense mechanism.

#2. Episode 175 - a pinch of cuteness won't hurt you

The second duel between Atem and Rafael is one of my favorite duels that have ever aired. I have so many things to say and have more pieces to draw about their exchange of dialogue. I'll get back to this story later.

This duel takes place between two of the most serious characters in the series. Absolutely no joking around-- except for a moment of cuteness overloading when Kuriboh Brothers cheerfully bounce around in the Seal of Orichalcos...😂😂 This scene gives a breather for the audience with a grin on their lips appreciating the cute furballs. I love it when renouned Yugioh animation directors, including Kenichi Hara who was responsible for this episode, add pleasant jokes like this at their discretion :))

I'm working on a re-interpretation fan art series of some Yugioh DM episodes, starting from this piece :D

#1. Episode 128 - Atem gets devastated by Joey's "death"

Although the fatal condition (probably cardiac arrest) was temporary, this incident was arguably among the most heart-rending experience Atem has ever had. The face he makes at the sight of the inconceivable tragedy is simply unforgettable.

What drives me even crazier about this scene is that the sky is so fucking bright blue after the dark fogs are all gone; the shadow game has already ended. The dark fog has taken Joey's life force with it. This creates a striking and poignant contrast with what's actually unfolding atop the tower.
