As a non-Jew, the sheer vitriol I see towards Zionism baffles me. And I criticise Zionism; I think it has absolutely led to terrible conditions for Palestinians.
But surely...surely, the response to Zionism should be "wow, we really fucked up with how we treated Jews and now they don't want to live with us anymore. We should probably make the world safer for them so they do want to live with us again."
Instead it's, "we're going to spend 2,000 years harassing, abusing, attacking and murdering Jews but how DARE they want to escape us?? That's so entitled! Have you EVER heard of anything so UTTERLY SELFISH as wanting your own country where you won't be murdered for your ethnoreligion????"
Like, if you're anti-Zionist surely your main priority should be tackling antisemitism? That would be the logical way to end Zionism if you're so absolutely certain it shouldn't exist????
Its like a husband beating his wife and then throwing a fit when she decides she wants to move out.
Like, do you know who I blame most of all for the catastrophe in Gaza right now? Most of all? Because it's not Israelis and it's not IDF and its not Netanyahu. It's not Palestinians and it's not Gaza and it's not Hamas.
Who I blame most of all is the rest of the world for letting it get this bad. And it all starts with the fact that the world decided killing Jews was okay, and continued that belief for 2,000 years.
You're a non-Jew and want things to get better in Israel and Palestine? Start being fucking nicer to Jews, because it is our own fucking societies that started this shitshow.

So like a lot of people who watched The Pitt, once I was done I started watching ER, and let me tell you this show is wild.
First off, cameos. Any random episode you've got Clea Duvall, Bradley Whitford, Zac Efron, or Ewan fucking Macgregor. There are also actors on the show for longer like George Clooney, John Stamos, and Mariska Hargitay.
The plot is also all over the place. A few examples:
A plot: ethics of forging medical charts b plot: uh oh this emotionally constrained doctor is gonna be a father c plot: mark greene is a disney dad tm d plot: jerry tries to catch a genetically engineeted mouse
A plot: this PA has AIDS and her struggles, b plot: the growing pains of consolidating two hospital staffs into one, and c plot: Jerry tries to lure an escaped kangaroo to his backyard
A plot: union drama and a nurse goes to the dark side (admin) b plot: dr pratts daddy issues c plot: lets sneak a baby monky into the hospital to be treated
warnings: it filmed from the 90s to the early 2010s, so there is some pretty dated stuff in there. AIDS is a big topic for a while, lots of unadressed mysoginy, racism, white saivour episodes, ableism etc. The episodes filmed after 9/11 go super hard on the patriotism fyi. There's also a lot of unethical relationships power dynamic wise, and lots of heavy topics such as SA, death (obviously for a medical drama), mental health issues, neglect and abuse.
But on the bright side: the cast is quite racially diverse for a show filmed in the 90s-2010s, there's lots of great acting and stories, they had a great story line humanising a woman with HIV/AIDS, a really cool lesbian character, and theres a ton of episodes. Its also not super graphic with blood/gore etc so if that kind of thing is upsetting you can still watch it.
Medium things: there are large stretches of episodes that are great, and then there's stretches that aren't so great.

These are all great! Just adding to this:
3: practice marking time, with a met and also with proper posture (or as close as you can get it). You didn't say what instrument you're playing, but no matter which one you need to stand up straight. Remember that the first step is always left!
3a. You're going to be required to play much louder than you would any other setting. So I'd suggest when you practice (anything) start playing everything half a dynamic louder than you normally would. So if its marked p play it mf, mf play it f and so on. Just try to keep a good tone while doing it.
5: It's a good idea to identify the upperclassmen/anyone with good marching skills to mimic if you need. Any wind player has the same lower body technique. For upper body: If you're playing bell front (trumpet, mello, baritone/trombone) see one of them. If you're playing sax, all three have the same posture. Flute/pics have the same, clarinets are different tho. If you're in the drumline then all instruments have the same lower body technique, and for posture (I think, I'm a trumpet player) bass drums all have the same and snare and tenor are the same.
7. Be patient with yourself! You're new to this and will make mistakes. Just do your best.
Hey! I’m starting my first season of marching band and band camp really soon. Do you have any tips or any timing bc I’m shit scared 😭😭
OMG CONGRATS!! YOURE GOING TO BE INCREDIBLE
Here are a few things I've learned over the past 3 years and some things I tell my new marchers every year:
Bring PLENTY of water. To every rehearsal. Even when it starts to get cooler if the area you live in does that later in the season. Don't be like me my freshman year and survive only off of mountain dew.
Once you get your show music listen to it on repeat, ghost along or play along with the recording, etc. It'll make memorization so much easier.
Practice marking time/marching while you practice music. Even if it's just like little baby steps in your bedroom. And practice with a metronome.
Make sure you take care of yourself! Marching season can be a really stressful time for everyone. Make sure you get enough sleep, eat well, and stay hydrated.
Don't be scared of your drum majors/section leaders/band directors/band councils/upperclassmen. We are here to help! Some of the best friends I've made in marching band have been people I was terrified of when i was a freshman because they were older than me. Some of them might look scary but I promise they'd love to help you!
have fun!! Marching band is literally one of my favorite things ever. You get to become a part of an amazing group of people all working together towards a common goal. Your band will become your family and you'll have so much fun together!!
Good luck on your first season! I know it seems scary right now but you'll be incredible. And I promise participating in a marching band is something you won't regret and will build you a family for the rest of your high school career.
Happy marching!!!

Ruminations on my hs band experience:
The variance of playing Sousa marches as a trumpet is wild. If you're playing 1st then you play pretty much every note, all melody all the time, but if you're on 2 or 3 you're on boom chick. It's especially fun going from boom chick to 1st a week before the fcking concert but that's another story.
I hate playing christmas music every winter concert because you have to start working on it in fucking August but one year we did Sleigh Ride and I had to fight like five people for the right to make the horsey noise at the end and I WON
One time in a jazz band concert the kid next to me fell off the platform.
The stereotype of trumpets having massive egos, even if unearned, is unfortunately true

When I was an underclassmen (freshman/sophomore) my marching band section leader was a junior/senior and he hated life. In two years he did the following:
- unlike every other section refused to set up a halloween candy exchange bc 'he didn't feel like it'
-refused to organize spirit boxes (end of season small gift exchange) bc 'its stupid'
-refused to plan a section party
-had a feud with the color guard for reasons still unknown to me
- when given sheet music to hand out gave the best trumpet player in my year the second part bc 'he didn't like him' (to be fair that kid was pretty full of himself but still) leading the trumpet section to have two people on first and FIVE on second
-unlike the rest of the jazz band class refused to join the concert band so he could go home earlier
-became the equipment manager to get extra time to himself before and after rehearsals (which backfired hilariously when his aforementioned nemesis became his apprentice)
Look, when you're the only girl in a heavily male dominated section, especially in high school, most of your section mates suck. But this guy was my hero.

Mohantos Thoughts
It's been a super hot minute since I've been interested in a new show to the point that I jumped into its fandom, or for a particular ship. To be perfectly honest, the show churn from Netflix had me perfectly content to just quietly carry on shipping for years after something was over and explore AU's for pairings and characters. I'm a nerd like that. Warrior Nun was pretty much the last show I had been invested in and I was fine in keeping it that way until this damned show came along.
But the Pitt is just genuinely that good and the cast so stellar that it felt fine to be a "filthy casual" in the fandom. Until the stupid pairing bug bit me in the ass again.
Because now I cannot unsee certain parallels between Avatrice and Mohantas, and it's driving me up the wall. (Warning: The rest of this unnecessary rant uses character tropes for shorthand.)
Sister Beatrice and Samira Mohan are two of the most Dutiful Princesses to ever Dutifully Princess. And somehow, I think Samira managed to beat out Beatrice, which is saying something.
They've both absolutely chained themselves to what they think their duty is, to their own detriment. They've both let their personhood be subsumed by their duty (whether that's being a nun-soldier fighting demons or fighting for duty of care against an all-consuming capitalist hellscape determined to treat people as numbers instead of as human beings). And they've both had their ideas of "right" rocked by an outsider.
Ava Silva and Trinity Santos both share some Glorious Dumbass traits, they've both had some extreme childhood trauma, and they both came out the other side with a sarcasm shield and can come across as very off-putting to those who don't really know them.
But they care. A lot. A whole, whole lot when it costs them dearly. And even when they're surrounded by people who want them to fail or when it would be in their best interests to walk the f_ck away, they keep showing up.
Sister Beatrice had her entire foundation crumbled by Ava coming into her life. Her sense of self, her relationship with the church, everything. Ava was possibly the first person to ever tell Beatrice that she was beautiful, just for being who and what she was. Who had faith in her as a person, not just as a skilled sister warrior sworn to die for a cause that was built on false foundations. Who was willing to die for her, just so Beatrice could live a life free of everything that had held her down before.
Beatrice was the first person to actually invest in Ava as more than a nuisance or a burden. Who guided her and tried to give her as much of the world as she hadn't been able to experience before as possible. Who was willing to tank the entire mission to stop Adriel and save the world just to keep Ava safe, even if it meant without her.
And yes, this is on a much grander scale than the Pitt and we've had much more time with these two idiots than we've had with Mohan and Santos, but I can, quote, "see the vision".
There are differences, to be sure. I think even Beatrice would acknowledge that she'd found a family in the OCS of sorts, while Samira Mohan freely admits in a spectacular self-own that she has no friends, no partner, and is a workaholic to an unhealthy degree.
Beatrice tries to suppress what she considers her flaws by endlessly beating herself into a mold that she thinks the Church and others will find acceptable. Samira blasts her trauma every day by trying to keep what happened to her father from happening to anyone else, in a seemingly endless loop of "if I can save them, I could've saved my dad," except the tragedy is that nothing can save him. Nothing can bring him back, and she's not in a place to be able to own and accept that pain. She's still pushing that boulder up the hill endlessly.
Where Ava is more "golden retriever with a bite", Trinity can come across as far more guarded. Unlike Ava, she knows exactly what's out in the world and wears a level of spiky cynicism as armor instead of running out to experience everything. (But you still see how much she cares, desperately, if quietly, so.)
Trinity is more like a feral raccoon trying to guard its trashcan home, but whoever and whatever is collected in said trashcan, she seems willing to absolutely throw down for. Trinity is not necessarily nice, but she is KIND.
But the bigger moments I can still see. Samira's entire speech about not bringing your baggage to work is more of a defense mechanism than a working principle for her. We see her lose it with the father seeking opioids. We see her shut Trinity down (though she was probably correct at that moment in that Trinity's approach was not having its intended effect on the patient), and tell her she's aggressive.
But we also see Samira acknowledge that Trinity was right later on with their shared Pittfest patient. And we see them both standing up for each other in very parallel ways involving the men in the department. Samira, who we have inferred is constantly being told by Robby that she's not fast enough and questions if she should even be there, has the whole department calling her Slo-Mo (even when she has the highest patient satisfaction scores of anyone there), is about to be reamed by Langdon for a delay in care that IS her fault because she was being overly cautious.
Only Trinity steps in and takes the blame, and receives a truly uncalled-for response from Langdon. The only other person we saw defend Samira that day was Dr. Collins. And that was after she seemingly apologized for participating in the Slo-Mo criticism before. Trinity doesn't know "Slo-Mo"; she just decides to step in because she doesn't want Samira to be yelled at. No strings attached, nothing expected in return.
It could've ended there, but it doesn't, because Samira presses the issue. And she gives Trinity the validation she hasn't received all day. That she does deserve to be there, in the department, and that she IS a good doctor. Trinity's point was made, Samira quietly acknowledged and received it, and then turned around and helped build Trinity back up after Langdon screamed at her in front of everyone.
All the potential is there for these two to become friends (and more) and help build each other up in ways they truly need. Trinity as the direct push to help Samira confront things she'd rather not, and Samira as someone to really see Trinity for who she is and what she can be, not what she projects to the world. (Not in the sibling way Whitaker and Javadi interact with Trinity either.) And they're both willing and able to defend each other.
Just, you know, in an emergency room. Not fighting demons. (Though I wouldn't complain...)

Got to be real here - there are few things more fucked up than the "It's always moral to punch Nazis" crowd deciding that Zionists are the new Nazis actually so it's social justice praxis now to violently attack random Jews in the street - you know, the primary victims of Nazism.
Punch a Nazi - you are one, motherfucker.

For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."

[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. Be safe.

As someone who was living in Europe and the US during the apartheid era, I'm honestly trying to remember, and failing to remember, a single time I heard any activists in Europe or the United States call for completely dismantling South Africa as a country because it was committing crimes against humanity.
South Africa became a nation in 1910. When it started apartheid in 1948, it was about 38 years old. By the time apartheid was dissolved, around 1991, it was ~71 years old. Under international law, apartheid is a crime against humanity, and the South African government committed other crimes against humanity, as well.
The international campaign against apartheid focused on delegitimizing South Africa's white supremacist government and supporting the development of democracy in South Africa. It did not call for South Africa's dissolution or destruction.
Why am I thinking about this?
I keep seeing US and European leftists accuse Israel of crimes against humanity and then argue that Israel must therefore be dissolved. Besides, many of these people say, modern Israel has only been independent for 77 years, so it's not really valid as a country because it hasn't been around that long.
Even though South Africa had been around for much less time during the entire anti-apartheid movement, there was not a significant contingent of Europeans and Americans arguing that the international community should just dissolve South Africa because it hadn't been around that long.
Do I think these arguments for dissolving Israel are made in good faith? No, maybe, and yes. I don't think the people who originally came up with these arguments did so in good faith. I think those people don't like the idea of a country with a largely Jewish population, because they don't like the idea of Jews. I think those people would want Israel to disappear no matter what it did.
But I think a lot of the people who repeat these ideas somehow think they're valid, legitimate arguments rooted in logic and not prejudice.
So for anyone who considers themselves pro-Palestinian and thinks that necessitates the dissolution of Israel, I'd ask you to think about why you consider that to even be an option. It's a highly unusual demand for the international community to make. What makes Israel different from any other country whose government may have done unethical things?

Seen a few posts going around either celebrating or thinking that it's a good thing that the family of the boulder Colorado attacker Mohamed Soliman, were detained because they "hate jews" and honestly, could we just not do that
Like its genuinely fucked that I am having to say this right now.
Firstly, to the current knowledge, we do not know that his family have done anything to warrant deportation. The only "crime" in the public eye, is being related to or married to Soliman. Which isn't a crime.
What potentially may warrent ICE detention is if they had their own asylum applications or if they were included on Soliman's. If they were on Soliman's, then yeah ICE can legally detain them. Which I personally think is morally wrong but it is legal. If they had their own asylum claim then ICE shouldn't have detained them. If they were in violation of a Visa and didn't make an asylum claim either, then yeah its warranted for ICE to detain them.
But the point is, we, the public, do not know what the situation is regarding their status.
Secondly, we also do not know if they A) agree with his actions or B) if they're also antisemitic.
And guess what!!!! Even if his family are antisemitic, that still doesn't mean they deserve to be deported!!!!
Would it suck major arse and be bad and not good if they were antisemitic? 100% yes and I cannot stress enough that it would be bad. Still doesn't mean they should be deported.
And I especially hate when people assume that Soliman's family share his opinions simply because they're family because I do not share my own family's opinion on most topics and would hate if people thought i did solely on the basis of being related. Like even growing up, before I moved out, I did not agree with my father on a lot of topics. My own mother doesn't agree with my father on a lot of topics yet she is married to him.
One of his children is literally 4 years old. A 4 year old is in no capacity to be able to make informed political opinions.
What made me make this post was someone posting about one of Soliman's children studying to be a nurse or some other medical professional. And someone likened it to those antisemitic nurses in Australia and said that it was good that she wouldn't be able to pull the same shit those nurses claimed to do to jewish patients to Amercian Jews. And like, my brother in Hashem, we do not know her personal opinion on jews, why the fuck are you assuming she will be just as bad as those nurses from Australia?????
And I want to be clear. If there was genuine legal reason for ICE to detain Soliman's family, then as long as they had due process, it's warranted for ICE to do so.
My main issue is with people A) assuming the opinions of his family based on his crime and B) people cheering on what could potentially be a violation of their rights (as the public doesn't know their immigration status) simply because Soliman attacked jews.
Also last disclaimer, I am not trying to say that Solimans family is confirmed not antisemitic. They very well could be. I am just against making assumptions

So back when I did band when I'd be away from my case I used to put valve oil in my pocket, and by the time I was like a month and a half into my freshman year I became The Keeper of Valve Oil for the entire brass section of the marching band. This reputation followed me for my entire high school band career for every group I did. Do you know how weird it is to be a tiny freshman that large teenage boys depend on?

deconstructing ableist brainrot ✨💗 🫶
i have been seeing so much discourse online about "technically who gets to count as disabled" and how chronic illnesses are "not actually disabilities", as if anyone with a chronic condition is inherently less deserving of equal access. i am like 85% sure i have pots and i can't even go a flight up the stairs without feeling like death or stand for ten minutes. any "normal" activity makes me crash twice as hard.
if that isn't "disabling".... then what is?
and my point here isn't to argue about what "counts" as a disability. like can we all just agree on the fact that two people with even the same condition can have drastically different experiences? stop trying to make a spectrum into a binary.
it doesn't matter how "disabled" you are, EVERYBODY WITH VARYING DEGREES OF DISABILITY deserves EQUAL access to treatment and accommodations. we don't need to police each other, we need UNIVERSAL ACCESS.

Went to a graduation at a liberal arts college (keeping details vague for me/my families privacy) and saw lots of grads with i/p protest signs. Had some thoughts ig.
I can understand being angry about your tuition money going to weapons and aid to a country you are against but why wait until you graduate? You're not paying any more tuition.
1. Seems kinda performative? Like, holding up a sign that says 'no universities in gaza' or 'divest' at your graduation doesn't do much? Refusing to shake your dean's hand doesn't do anything?
2. Why show your sign to the faculty of all people? They don't decide where the money goes?
3. 'divest', 'no universities in gaza', 'free palestine', having palestinian flags on your caps doesn't bother me all that much but carrying a sign with a genocidal slogan on it(river, sea) is disgusting. I'm pretty far left but the antisemitism on the movement is awful.
I am all for protesting the methods of the israeli state and its leaders needing to face accountability for the war crimes they are commiting, but its such a double fucking standard on the left. We hate the methods and war crimes of Iran but we don't call for the total destruction of the state. We recognize the war crimes of the US but leftists don't call for the removal of US citizens and the return of the land to the indigenous peoples that lived here before us.
Also: OF COURSE Israel has mandatory military service, from the very beginning of its existence as a state it's been surrounded by hostile states and embroiled in wars. I don't see leftists hating on WWII or Vietnam vets who were drafted.

Oh you mean Hamas is executing and/or shooting anyone who breaks into their storehouses of supplies made up of the aid that has been sent into Gaza and was supposed to be distributed to the civilians there?
You mean Hamas has been hoarding all the aid that they were supposed to distribute to the civilians they oversee as the government?
You mean Hamas aren't actually the resistance fighters whose goal is helping Palestinians like their supporters say they are and are, in fact, harming the very people they're supposedly "liberating"? You mean Hamas literally has confirmed these very acts in their Telegram channel? That's wild who could have foreseen any of this.... Oh right, those of us who have been saying from the very beginning that Hamas was not your freedom fighter blorbo. They're an Islamist terrorist organization whose methods of "liberation" involve harming, killing, threatening, and/or crippling their own people repeatedly.
But ya'll have literally been following straight up antisemitic Islamist accounts on here (especially the notorious Jewfaking one) and across social media that have been slowly feeding you antisemitic rhetoric so that now any time something like this happens you either dismiss it as "Jewish Zionist propaganda" or justify it in some way.
Hamas is even admitting to doing this in their telegram channel and yet you won't hear anything from the pro Hamas propaganda accounts on this site.
Ask yourself "why?"
Why would these accounts that purportedly care about Palestinians not report about the hoarding of aid supplies, the harm done by Hamas against them, and the executions? Unless the entire thing was to push a specific agenda and foment a hatred in you, the reader, that ends up turning into antisemitic rage and results in a seething hatred.
