I've been thinking a lot about Mel and Breadhead and them when they were kids and the order that they may have come around in and such, because there's multiple ways it could be but there's certain things that REALLY sticks out to me for possibilities

To me it's like

Ken went to destroy the human child or even the egg before the prophecy could come true and the human could bring an end to the District (this is fun because it parallels the pilot's plot).

Then he found human baby in Temperance's care, and couldn't bring himself to do what he set out to because. She's just.. an innocent baby, who hasn't done anything wrong, just, a baby who came into existence in a way that she can't exactly control, and Ken doesn't go through with his plan. Took out Temperance temporarily and took her with him.

And after decoding the text on the paper the preachers give to Mel in the pilot, it just says that the human will decide the fate of the District, not that the human will inherently destroy it (which everyone freaks out over anyways clearly because the human has the POWER too and it's a risk that they don't want to deal with), so possibly Ken believes that if he raises her, he could raise her to permit the Gaslight District to continue as it is, so he sets out to do exactly that.

And then Breadhead came around one of two ways in my mind,

Option 1: Ken really processed just how risky it is to harbor the human child and raise her, even with Mud around because who knows what he'd have done had he known, and that maybe he can't entirely keep her safe and protect her properly, and he somehow came across the recipe paper for Breadhead that we see for just a moment after he uses the yeast, and deemed he could be a proper protector, and so Ken made him.

Option 2: Ken was, in fact, confident in his ability to look after Mel and keep her safe, and had this strange recipe that he SOMEHOW mistook for being for normal bread despite the strange instructions on it like "kill one thousand litterbugs, capture their souls" and the seeming label on the page saying "How To Make A Good Boy", and he accidentally created Breadhead, and it just happened to be convenient later on.

I personally believe that either way, Mel is probably older than Breadhead, because if he was older, Breadhead is more aware than he initially lets on if you pay attention to it, surely he'd be aware or at least very suspicious of Mel being the human? If his dad randomly brought home this pale-faced infant after going on a mission to destroy the human egg?

THIS IS ALL SPECULATION AND HEADCANON AT THIS POINT THOUGH.

Also just want to note that even if Mel is older I think Breadhead grew very quick, so everyone has always assumed he's older than her, which is something that annoys Mel to no end and Breadhead finds hilarious.
