“There you are!” Liam found Leo by the pool, stretched out in one of the outdoor recliners.
“Go away,” Leo did not bother to remove his sunglasses or turn his head to look at his brother.
“Can’t,” Liam responded, “Dad was looking for you this morning. He sent me to find you. You weren’t in your room. Your bed clearly hadn’t been slept in.”
“So?”
“So, one of the maids asked me if she should continue to treat Drake’s room as if it’s being used because his bed has been slept in every night since he left.”
Leo finally turned his head to glower at his brother, “So what? His bed is more comfortable than mine, that’s all!”
It still smelled like him.
Liam sighed, “Don’t you think you should just call him?”
Leo sat up and ripped the sunglasses off as he demanded, “Why the fuck would I do that?”
They had said all there was to say.
Leo had barely seen Drake since the morning in the hallway outside his room. This was his last night in Cordonia, tomorrow he’d be on a plane back to the states. Leo paced back and forth in his room, debating if he should go see him. Just to say goodbye of course.
He put his hand on the doorknob and then froze. Maybe it was a bad idea. Maybe he should text him instead. He backtracked to his bed and scooped his phone off the nightstand. Taking a seat on the edge of the mattress, he typed out a message, then deleted it without hitting send.
Why was this so hard?
He was being ridiculous. They’d known each other forever, the past month and a half shouldn’t get in the way of that, he decided. He jumped to his feet with determination and strode to the door. His hand was on the knob again when he realized that even though they’d known each other since childhood, they hadn’t really been close. He was more Liam’s friend than Leo’s. Wouldn’t it be weird to go out of his way to say goodbye when he’d never done that in the past?
“Fuck!” he said out loud as he released the door handle again and kicked at the carpet.
A knock sounded at the door.
“Now what?” He grumbled as he pulled it open.
Leo’s heart stopped when the open door revealed Drake standing in the hallway outside his room.
Drake’s eyes lifted from the floor to Leo’s face, “Ah…hey….”
Leo’s heart was suddenly in overdrive but damned if he was going to show it, “Hey,” he said with a slightly hostile edge.
“Can I come in?”
“Sure,” Leo stood back and held the door open as Drake walked through it. He pushed it closed as he asked, “What do you want?”
“I just wanted to make sure we’re good before I leave,” Drake said to the floor, hands jammed in his pockets, “I mean…if I was an ass the other day, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it. I just…I’m sorry, that’s all.”
Leo’s heart soared but again, damned if he was going to show it. In a neutral tone, he said, “We’re good.”
“Okay,” Drake nodded his head with a sigh of relief, “Good.”
“Good,” Leo agreed.
They stood in awkward silence for a bit then Leo asked, “Was there anything else?”
“No,” Drake shrugged, then slowly lifted his eyes to meet Leo’s, “I mean, not unless you wanted to do…anything.”
“Are you serious right now?” Leo asked him in astonishment, “You ignore me for three fucking days then show up trying to get your dick sucked?”
“No, that’s not what I-Yeah, no, you’re right. That was a dick move. I should just go,” Drake headed for the door, his face bright pink.
“Wait!” Leo stepped between him and the door, blocking his way, “I’ll do it.”
Drake stopped and looked at him in confusion, “Do what?”
A slow smile spread across Leo’s face, “You,” he grabbed Drake by his shirt and spun him around, slamming him up against the door, “Just don’t fucking talk!”
“Why?” Drake asked in bewilderment.
“Because,” Leo brought his lips to Drake’s in a brutal kiss. When he pulled away, he pinched his cheeks between his fingers and said, “You say stupid shit all the time and I’m afraid if you talk you’re going to ruin this.”
“Ruin what? We’re not in a-“
Leo’s breath brushed across Drake’s ear as he whispered, “I said don’t talk,” before attacking the side of his neck with hot, wet kisses as one hand tangled in his hair and the other started to explore. Leo spoke again as his lips moved down Drake’s body, each word punctuated with a lick, a nip, a kiss, or a bite, as he worked his way downward, “Be. Quiet. And. Let. Me. Say. Good. Bye. Properly.”
Drake clamped his mouth shut and let his head fall back against the wall wondering if this was going to make it easier or harder to leave.
“All right, fine,” Liam shook his head, “be a stubborn ass. But you need to stop moping around here like your best friend died or something.”
“What is there to do?” Leo held his hands out, “I finished school and all the shit dad wants me to learn is here, inside this fucking mausoleum! That’s why he’s looking for me now! He wants me at the council meeting this afternoon and the duchy’s budgetary meeting in Krona this evening.”
“Well, I’m meeting Riley at the beer garden tonight. Hana and Liv are coming, and so are Max and Savannah. You should come too!”
Leo looked at his brother doubtfully. Just what he wanted, to hang out with a bunch of happy couples. “No thanks, Li. I know what you’re doing, and I appreciate it, but I don’t need it. I’m fine.”
“We’re meeting at seven if you change your mind.”
“I won’t.”
7:30 p.m. Beer Garden, Stormholt City, Cordonia
“Liam! Shit!” Olivia pointed to the TV mounted above the bar.
“What is it?” Liam had never seen Olivia shaken before. He turned to look but barely made out the headline Shots Fired at the King and Crown Prince as They Leave Budget Meeting before he was drug out by his security detail.
8:30 p.m. Cordonian Royal Hospital
Liam paced back and forth in the private waiting area, cell phone to his ear, “Pick up the phone, pick up the phone….”
Drake had just sat down with a group of friends for dinner when his phone rang. He glanced at the caller id then excused himself so he could take it, “Hey, Li. What’s up?”
Relief washed over Liam at the sound of Drake’s voice, “You haven’t heard? I didn’t want you to find out from the internet-“
Drake’s stomach dropped, “Heard what? What’s wrong?”
“There was a sniper attack tonight. Someone took shots at my father and Leo-“
Drake’s knees buckled out from under him. He stumbled and dropped down into the nearest chair, struggling to catch his breath, “Is he….is he-“
“He’s fine, Drake! Dad too. Physically anyway...”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
Liam sighed, “He’d kill me if he knew I was telling you this…”
“Just spit it out already!"
“He’s been sleeping in your room since you left.”
“My room?” Astonishment pulled through him, “Why?”
“Why do you think, you fucking idiot?”
There was stunned silence for a moment then Drake practically whispered, “But…he doesn’t like me like that.”
“Drake, you’re my best friend and I love you but you’re about as clueless as they come. He literally came out for you, after spending his life in the closet. Why would he do that if he didn’t like you, huh?”
“I’ll be on the next flight home.”
The next day….
Leo growled in frustration when a knock sounded on his door. Why the hell couldn’t everyone just leave him alone? He had already told his father, stepmother, brother, Olivia, Max, Savannah, a butler, and two maids that he didn’t want any lunch.
He yanked the door open and yelled, “Whatever it is, I don’t want any!”
Drake stood on the other side of the door with that cocky-ass grin that Leo both loved and hated, “You sure about that? You don’t even know what I’m offering.”
“Drake?” Leo felt shock course through him, followed by a surge of happiness, “What are you doing here?”
“I live here, remember?” Drake pushed past Leo into the room without waiting for an invitation.
Leo pushed the door shut and followed Drake across the room. “I know that! I meant…why are you here now? You’re supposed to be at school in Texas!”
Drake stopped in midstride and spun toward Leo with fury and anguish in his voice, “Someone took a shot at you, Leo! Of course, I came home!”
“I mean…they missed,” Leo smiled for the first time since it had happened. First time in weeks if he were being honest.
“It’s not funny, Leo!”
“It’s called dark humor, Drake,” Leo told him, “How did you even know?”
“Liam called me.”
“Okay. I mean, I appreciate the concern, but as you can see,” Leo patted his own body to show that there were no holes in it, “I’m perfectly fine-“
“Would you just shut up?” Drake lurched forward and cupped Leo’s face in both hands, cutting him off as their lips crashed together.
Drake had kissed him with passion before, had kissed him as if he were going to drown in his desire for him and he had kissed him with tenderness as if they were actual lovers, but he had never kissed him like this before… with desperation as if he needed him to breath and he was afraid if he let go, he was going to float away.
When the kiss broke, Drake leaned his forehead against Leo’s as he stared into his eyes, breathing jagged, hand still caressing his face, “That phone call scared the shit out of me, Leo!”
Leo’s eyes stayed locked on Drake, “Why? I told you, I’m fine…”
“I mean…if something happened to you….”
“Yeah?”
“Liam would be devastated,” Drake dropped his hand and stepped back, “and he’s my best friend so I need to be here! You know…for him.”
“Right…you came back for Liam…”
“What do you want me to say, Leo?” Drake’s tone was defensive as he yanked a hand through his hair.
“I don’t know, maybe the truth for fucking once instead of this bullshit macho façade you’ve got going on!”
“Me?” Drake scoffed, “Mister I can’t be gay because I’m so manly!”
“Oh, okay, mister I’m going to pick up a woman to prove my manliness and deny that I could possibly be catching feelings for someone!”
Drake scoffed again, “Yeah, all right mister playboy of the Mediterranean!”
Leo’s mouth fell open, “You cannot hold me accountable for the nicknames that the press gives me!”
“But it’s true, isn’t it? You shun relationships, don’t you?”
“No more than you do!” Leo’s voice rose, “You’re the fucking poster child for toxic masculinity!”
Drake stared at him for a moment then all the anger drained out of him as he started laughing.
A small, bewildered smile tugged at the corners of Leo’s lips, “What?”
“I’m surprised you know what toxic masculinity is, that’s all.”
“I know what toxic masculinity is,” Leo huffed, “I grew up in Cordonia not the backwoods of Texas!”
“Fuck you, so did I,” Drake shook his head with a quiet laugh, “Look, I’m sorry, this isn’t easy for me.”
“You think it’s easy for me?”
Surprise pulled through him, “What?”
“This,” Leo gestured vaguely around at everything, “Admitting I have…fuck…feelings for someone…. especially…you know….you….”
Drake felt butterflies explode in his chest, “You have feelings for me?”
Leo turned bright red as he mumbled to the floor, “Shut up….”
“If you want me to shut up, you’ll have to come over here and make me,” Drake teased, “preferably with tongue, because you just admitted that you like me and I don’t think I’m ready to stop talking about it!”
“This is the part where you admit that you like me back, asshole!”
Drake stepped back into Leo’s personal space, his hand going up to caress his cheek again, “I thought you would have figured that out when I got on a fucking plane in the middle of the night to get to you the minute I realized I could have lost you!”
“It would still be nice to hear….”
“Fine, damn it! I like you, okay? I like you!”
“Yeah, okay, that’s good.” Leo grinned before leaning in for another kiss, “Now that we’ve settled that, how about we have a proper reunion?”
“I’m never going to say no to that….” Drake laughed as Leo pulled his shirt off him.
Thirty minutes later, they lay naked and panting on Leo’s bed, side by side staring up at the ceiling.
“Damn, I missed you so fucking much,” Drake admitted.
“You couldn’t possibly have missed me as much as I missed you,” Leo said.
“Bet!” Drake scoffed as he rolled onto his side and propped up on his elbow, “I was fucking miserable, Leo.” It had felt like he’d cut his heart out and left it on the wrong side of the Atlantic.
“Yeah, me too…” Leo ran a hand down his face with a sigh afraid to ask the next question. He hated to think about it, but he had to know, “So, when are you going back?”
“I’m not.”
“What do you mean?” Leos’s brows furrowed, “It’s not even halfway through the semester!”
“I’m not leaving you again, Leo! Someone tried to kill you!”
“That’s…that’s stupid! You can’t just drop out of college! What about your future?”
“What?” Drake looked at him like he was stupid, “I didn’t drop out! I transferred to Cordonia U.”
“Oh.” Leo’s heart beat a little faster. Drake was moving back to the Cordonia…for him.
“Give me a little credit, I’m not a complete idiot!”
Leo gave him a teasing smile, “Well…”
“Well, you like me,” Drake grinned at him as he scooted closer, “so if I’m an idiot, what does that say about you?”
“You make a fair point,” Leo conceded as he traced his fingertips across Drake’s lips.
“So…are we like, officially a thing or what?”
“Yes, we are officially a thing!” Leo answered.
“So….we can tell people and shit?”
Leo heaved a deep sigh, “Everyone but my parents….it’s not because of you!” he added quickly, as panic at the thought of causing another misunderstanding shot through him, “It’s them! You know how they are!”
“Hey, hey, calm the fuck down! Breathe! I do know how they are and I’m fine with not telling them.” Drake assured him.
Drake pushed back his fears and insecurities about the future as he tried not to think about the fact that Constantine would never approve, that Leo was meant to be king, and that the royal council would be pushing Leo to marry. To marry a woman. To marry a noblewoman.
Those were all problems for another day. Constantine was still in his fifties; he would be king for decades. There was plenty of time to figure things out. For the moment he was just going to focus on the fact that Leo Rys liked him, that they had admitted their feelings for each other, and that they could now start to build an actual relationship.
Everything was going to be fine.

(this awesome poster is the handiwork of our wonderful host @sazanes!!)
Note: So sorry for the delay in getting this out!! IRL has been a little tricky these days.
It gives us great joy to announce our third edition of the Hana Lee Appreciation Week!!
This year we are holding the AW around World Book Day (23rd April) in honour of Hana's passionate, long-lasting love for books!
Hana is talented at a great number of things, but is passionate about just a few. One is music - the other is reading. It was originally a hobby her parents introduced her to, to gain an advantage as a noblewoman, but Hana grew to love it far beyond what her parents expected. Her fondness for Jane Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, her delightful rebellions in secretly reading Wuthering Heights and manhuas, her adorable habit of leaving sweet notes behind, between the pages of a library book. Her love for books has deep and wonderful, and allowed her a window into worlds she didn't even realize existed!
But books and reading aren't our only themes for this AW! Take a look at our theme list for what we plan to do for each day:
April 21st - Character Appreciation/Throwback
April 22nd - Flowers/Fashion Design
April 23rd - Bookworm/AU
April 24th - Competitive Hana!/Culinary Love
April 25th - Family/Friendship/Romance

All.Of.This!
The queer community is full of hurt people.
This can lead to a knee-jerk reaction when we hear someone else say "I am hurt". We look at them and say "shut up, you're not as hurt as me because you have X privilege".
This leads to femme afab queers being told "you can pass and hide as cishet, you're not as hurt as queer women who look queer, you're just complying with the patriarchy's ideals for beauty, you're hurting the queer community, you're anti feminist."
It leads to masc afab people, whether trans men or nonbinary or genderqueer etc, being told everything from "you're not as hurt, you can pass as a cis man" to "you have no desire to transition, you still look like a girl, shut up".
It leads to trans amab people who are nonbinary or genderqueer or agender etc, who still dress or look "masculine", being told that they are "unsafe" for queer spaces, that they don't belong at a "women and nonbinary meeting", that they are "basically just cis men trying to escape accountability".
It leads to asexuals being told "you don't even feel sexual attraction, the thing we're ostracized for! how could you possibly be oppressed? You're just straight and a prude" and aromantics being told "you're just straight and like casual sex, get over yourself" and both being told "you're just a cishet who wants to steal resources".
I have heard every single kind of queer person say "I have been harmed and ostracized by the queer community". Lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and mspec people, trans people, aroace people - every single one of us has expressed feeling ostracized by our own community.
On the plus side, this means you're not alone. Your group isn't the only one facing this. You have allies!! Other queer people who have gone through what you've gone through!
We need queer unity. We need to stop attacking each other. If you feel the urge to say "shut up, my group has been hurt MORE", go take a walk. Remember that every single one of us has been hurt.

Not feminist as in "women should be included in the draft" but feminist as in "being drafted is a violation of bodily autonomy for any gender".
The draft should not exist. Drafting people into the military is a violation of human rights. You should not be able to force someone to risk their life. If you can't find enough people who care about a conflict to keep it going then it simply shouldn't keep going. You can't even force someone to donate a kidney using government power, why the fuck can you force them to donate their whole body and life to a cause they don't agree with or don't care about?

ROD Loading Screen but I genderswapped the characters, drawing by me
Tumblr media
So this is my first drawing on here. Not sure how often I'll post my art though, since I'm still working out a lot of things with my artstyle. Like, it's very hit-or-miss for me lol.
Anyways, I did like how this one turned out for sure, so I'm sharing it. I think both MC and Logan should have been GOC honestly. I like to think the f!version would be called Lola. Or Lois. Or heck maybe even just Logan, a girl being named Logan sounds pretty cool. Granted I didn't care much for the story either way, but if you know me well you know I'd have loved a genderswapped version of that loading screen.
Tagging: @choicesficwriterscreations
WIP/Process Pieces below!
I drew this on paper with pencil first. Then I took a photo of it and colored it in, added some lighting and hue touch-ups, and added and edited the background of the original on Photoshop/Photopea. The blurry parts are me painting over the areas where the characters from the original cover were still showing.

Drake and Leo, with Helena in tow, made their way back outside to where their friends and family were waiting for them.
“I made some adjustments, your mom is sitting with me,” Bianca told her future son-in-law.
“Thanks,” Leo pulled her into a hug as he whispered, “I still want to call you mom too.”
Bianca nodded as she hugged him back, “I’d love that, son.”
Leo felt a sense of wonder in his chest. This morning he’d had no moms, now he had two.
When he released Bianca, he turned to his best man, “Thank you for coming all the way from Cordonia, Your Majesty.”
Liam shook his head with a grin as he embraced his brother, “Shut up, man. Riley and I wouldn’t have missed this for the world. Besides, I had to return the favor, didn’t I?”
“Wow, I’m impressed. This is more my style than yours, little bro.” Leo let out a low whistle as he took in the moonlit clearing, bonfire roaring on the beach, and lanterns swaying lazily from carefully placed posts. Riley wore a simple floor-length white dress with spaghetti straps while Liam was dressed in slacks and a button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, no suit jacket, no tie. Leo himself had on cargo shorts and a polo shirt, perfect for a casual, and secret, beach wedding.
“Yes, well, after what Dad did to you, I just don’t want to give him the chance to torpedo us the same way.”
“You always were smarter than me. Well, the best man is here, let’s do this thing!”
“I still can’t believe you got married without me!” Drake said with mock indignation.
Liam pulled his best friend into a hug next, “You know I wanted you there, but we had to get married before Leo abdicated and Constantine turned his attention to my love life! It was the only way to ensure he couldn’t interfere in any way. Besides, this guy,” he released Drake and jerked his thumb toward Leo, “was in a hot fucking hurry to get to you, so we were in a time crunch.”
Drake flushed as a sappy grin spread across his face, “Yeah, I know. You’re forgiven.”
Drake Walker was happier than he ever thought he could be. Leo Rys loved him and was about to fucking marry him! The idea that he was about to be someone’s husband was almost surreal, but after everything the two of them had been through together, everything Leo’s father had put them through, it was the happy ending they both deserved. He slapped Liam on the shoulder, “At least you made it to mine, even if your brother did steal you right out from under me to be his best man!”
“Good thing you had a backup best friend I suppose,” Liam teased him good-naturedly.
“Yeah,” Drake laughed, “Where the hell is Beaumont, anyway?”
“I’m here, I’m here!” Max jogged up to the group, a little out of breath.
“What’s got you all out of- oh, no, no, man, you better not have just been making out with my sister!”
Max lifted an eyebrow and threw his hands up in the air, “Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies!”
“Come on, man! That’s just-“
“She is my fiancée you know.” Max reminded him.
“Yeah,” Liam took Max’s side, “and I put up with you making out with my brother all the damn time!”
“Holy crap, we’re all brothers now!” Max blurted out.
“Heh,” Drake laughed, “Who saw that coming?”
“No one!” Leo scoffed.
“But it’s pretty awesome!” Max grinned from ear to ear. When he married Savannah, Drake would be his brother for real and as soon as Drake and Leo said I do, Drake and Liam would be brothers…which made Max and Liam brother-in-laws once removed or something.
“The girls are all here, so we can get this show on the road now!” Savannah called out as she approached the group of men. Olivia, Hana, and Riley trailed behind her.
Olivia made a beeline for Leo, “Is it true? Your mom is here?”
“Yeah, it’s true, Liv, she’s really here!”
Olivia cocked her head to one side as she regarded him, “You seem pretty okay with it.”
“I am!” He affirmed, “She never wanted to abandon me, my father kept her away!”
“I’d like to say I’m surprised, but that’s right in character for him. I’m sorry, Leo.”
“It’s fine. She’s here now and I’m about to marry the love of my life. I’m good!”
“There’s that dimpled smile we all love!” Olivia patted him on the cheek.
“If the wedding party is ready…” the officiant interrupted, “it’s time.”
“Time to get hitched!” Leo yelled.
“Hitched?” Olivia stared at him with wide eyes as everyone else laughed. Turning to Drake she shook her head, “I’m blaming you for this.”
Drake laughed, his chest filled with happiness, “I will take all the blame! Now let’s go get hitched!”
Liam stood beside Leo as his best man with Olivia and Hana as the maids of honor, because why not have both? Maxwell stood beside Drake flanked by Riley and Savannah.
Their mothers were in the audience, and their best friends and siblings were standing by their side but as they stood in front of friends and family, the rest of the world faded away and there was just Leo and Drake.
Leo and Drake running through the palace gardens as children, Leo and Drake channeling their burgeoning feelings into competition and aggression on the soccer field, the polo field, and the fencing piste. Leo and Drake each struggling to make their own place in the world, all the while holding the other in the back of their minds, and the back of their hearts. Leo and Drake standing in the game room at the palace, both eager to give in to Liv’s dare and both denying that eagerness. Leo and Drake slowly giving in to their feelings as the physical attraction between them exploded and grew. Leo and Drake pushing each other away in a futile attempt to protect their hearts. Leo and Drake falling completely in love over the course of one magical year. Leo and Drake fighting to be together, Leo and Drake finally finding peace, love, and acceptance in the heart of the Walker family on a cattle ranch in the middle of west Texas.
And finally, Leo and Drake standing at the altar, ready to entwine their lives with each other permanently, completely, and irrevocably.
By the time they said “I do,” both men were in tears.
In almost no time at all, the ceremony was over, and the officiant was announcing, “Allow me to introduce, for the first time, Mr. and Mr. Drake and Leo Walker!”
Leo had decided to take Drake’s last name. Partly out of practicality. The Rys name was too recognizable. It was also too reminiscent of the years spent in a repressive environment. But mostly because, with the exception of Liam, he already felt more a part of Drake’s family, more loved, more accepted, than he had ever felt at home. Home. Cordonia was no longer that for him. Texas was home. The ranch was home. Drake was home.
Drake had promised not to smear cake on Leo’s face, but he did it anyway amidst cheers from the guests, the camera snaps from the photographer, and Leo’s laughter ringing out across the clearing. Leo returned the favor as Drake tried to dodge him, his own laughter shaking his whole body. He was happy. Happier than he had ever believed he could be.
Both men had overcome their own insecurities to be together. Both men had made sacrifices for love. Both men had allowed their walls to crumble. Both men had reached for happiness and found it, with each other. Nothing would ever come between them again. They had each other, and that was all that mattered. Happily ever after was theirs.

The woman’s voice trembled as she asked tentatively, “You remember me?”
“Yes…” her image was etched into his memory. Her face had a few more lines in it now, but it was still the face from his earliest memories, as well as the face in the well worn photo of her he carried in his wallet. But it wasn’t just her appearance. The lilt in her voice and the faint scent of jasmine that wafted to him on the breeze pulled him back through the years to the palace nursery, bedtime stories and hugs that could make the worst booboos better and the scariest dreams fade into oblivion. Until one day she had just been gone and nothing had been truly okay since. Not until Drake’s love had started to heal him.
His heart began to race, and the roar of his own blood was deafening in his ears. “What are you doing here?” he choked out.
“I…I just wanted to see you…” tears welled up in the woman’s eyes, “I didn’t mean to disrupt your wedding! I’m so sorry!”
“This is your mother?” Bianca’s mouth fell open.
“Yeah,” Leo nodded, his mouth dry. So many emotions fell through him in that moment. Joy, loss, pain, anger, sadness, curiosity, wonder, amazement. He asked the one question that he’d wanted to ask for over twenty years, “Where have you been?”
“I…” she sniffed as she glanced at the people surrounding them, “Can we go somewhere more private?”
“Come on, let’s all go into the house,” Bianca directed as she patted Leo gently on the shoulder.
Leo responded to her touch, and her directions, turning and making his way into the house without question. Bianca whipped her phone out and sent a text to her son. On the way into the house, she sent a server to bring iced tea to the living room.
By the time the tea made it to them, so had Drake. He rounded the corner in a panic, “What’s wrong?”
Bianca intercepted him, “Drake, this is Leo’s mother.”
“What?” He froze in place, gaping at the scene in front of him.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Leo laughed, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Drake Walker at a loss for words before.”
“Sorry!” Drake shook himself out of it and hurried to take a seat next to his almost husband. He took Leo’s hand in his own. His copper eyes traced Leo’s face with concern, “Are you okay?”
“Mm, hm,” Leo nodded as he wiped a tear from his cheek, “Just in shock a little I guess.” Turning to the woman seated across from him, he said, “I never thought I’d see you again. I’d given up hope.”
Helena dropped her head into her hands and started to cry.
Bianca moved to the couch next to her and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“I’m sorry,” Helena lifted her head to give Bianca a grateful look, “I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry! Today isn’t about me!”
“No, it’s not,” Drake affirmed, “So why did you pick today, of all days, to show up?”
“I just wanted to see my baby boy get married. I wanted to make sure he…” she hiccupped a little through her sobs, “…was happy…”
“I am happy,” Leo assured her, “but I would have been a lot happier a long time ago if I’d had a mother.”
“I know…I’m sorry….your father…he wouldn’t…he said I couldn’t…he…”
The anger whooshed out of him as Leo stared at her, horrified, “Constantine wouldn’t let you see me, would he?”
She shook her head no.
“That fucker! I knew it!” Leo was on his feet, pacing.
“Yeah…but…” Drake looked back and forth between them, “Leos been an adult for a while now. Why didn’t reach out sooner?”
“I tired! When he was at college a few times, but the guards wouldn’t let me through! I sent letters but I…I’m guessing you never got them?”
“All my mail was screened…”
“And your personal number was unpublished.” Drake finished for him.
“I was in the crowd in Paris when you gave that speech about climate change,” she smiled proudly through her tears, “You were so passionate about it!”
“You were there?” Leo felt tears pool in his own eyes again, but for an entirely different reason.
She had followed his career. She had tried to contact him. She had never forgotten him nor abandoned him willingly. And he should have known. He should have looked for her. It was just one more thing his father had taken from him.
As if reading his mind, Drake’s voice cut through his self-recrimination, “You didn’t know, Leo.”
“Of course, I was there!” Helena nodded, “I wanted to be there for so much more, Leo! I never wanted to leave you behind! I made a mistake! I didn’t realize that when I decided to leave Constantine that he would keep you from me! I really thought we would split custody and-“
Leo was suddenly across the room and in her arms. Bianca moved off the couch to give them room as they clung to each other and cried together.
Bianca pulled Drake to the side, “I’ll go let the guests know the wedding will start late. I think they need a minute.”
“Yeah, thanks, mom,” Drake brushed a kiss on her cheek before turning his attention back to Leo, “I’m staying in case he needs me.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less from you, son.”
Leo and his mother spent the next twenty minutes trying to catch up on all the missing years.
“Hey, babe,” Drake finally interjected, “Should we reschedule the wedding?”
“What?” Leo looked up, startled, “Why?”
“Um…” Drake’s eyes traced from Leo to Helena and back again, “So you can deal with this.”
“I didn’t mean to derail your wedding!” she protested, “I just wanted to be here!”
The press had reported his engagement to another man three months ago, but the man had been unidentified and Leo’s location unknown. Drake’s name had been leaked two weeks ago. She’d hired a private detective who had delivered the address of the ranch and the date of the wedding yesterday.
She hadn’t known if he’d want to see her. She thought she could slip in and watch from the back. She hadn’t counted on security at the gate.
“You’re fine,” Leo grinned at her, “I’m glad you’re here. It makes this day even more perfect!” His father was never keeping them apart again. “Please stay after so we can talk some more?”
“I’d like nothing more!” she agreed.
Leo stood and pulled Drake into his body with a smirk, “You’re not getting out of this that easy, Walker! We’re getting hitched!”
Surprised laughter bubbled out of Drake, “Hitched? Did you just say hitched?”
“Yeah…I’m a real Texan now, boy! Yee Haw! Let’s go get hitched!”
Drake swatted Leo on the backside as he followed him out of the room, “Try and fucking stop me!”

In Your Room Chapter 10: Let's Get Married
Series: In Your Room
Fandom: TRR
Pairings: Leo x Drake
Rating: Pretty G
Warnings for this chapter: none
Song Inspiration for the series: In Your Room by The Bangles

A/N: So one night a bunch of us were playing around with the incorrect quote generator and I promised @whatwouldvalerydo that if I ever wrote this proposal, I would tag them so here we are and here it is!
This hits two of the themes for the @choicespride pride month prompts: Marriage and Royalty and the @choicesficwriterscreations Pride bingo space for Family, and @choicesjunechallenge for Proposal.
Brief summary so far for anyone new to this series: Leo Rys, the crown prince of Cordonia gives into long repressed desires when a dare is thrown down. He becomes more and more involved with his younger brother's best friend until feelings can no longer be hidden. But his father isn't about to let the heir to the throne come out publicly and convinces Drake that if he loves Leo, he'll leave him. Drake leaves, but a heartbroken Leo abdicates the throne for love and follows him all the way to Texas.
My other stuff: Master List.
Tumblr media
The Jaguar Hills Ranch was decked out in wedding finery. Fall colors adorned everything. Pumpkins and bales of hay were scattered strategically around the open clearing behind the main house. Lanterns were strung from the sprawling back porch to the open-air barn that was itself filled with decorated tables, an open bar and a dance floor. Twinkle lights twined in the branches of all the trees bordering the clearing. A massive arch made of orange and white flowers was centered in the clearing.
For the first time in his adult life, Leo was happy.
He had abdicated the throne and upped sticks, leaving behind not just the crown but the weight of his father’s judgements.
“You want to abdicate the throne so you can be with Drake?” Liam sounded far too happy about the news.
Leo didn’t think he was getting it, “Yes, but-“
“No buts! That’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time, Leo! You both deserve to be happy and-“
“Yeah, but Liam, listen!” Leo grunted in frustration, “That means all of the responsibly gets dumped in your lap!”
Liam paused for a long moment, the smile fading from his face as he contemplated that. “That’s true….but you’ll be free to be with the person you love, Leo. And I’ve had all the same training you have. I can do it. I’m ready.”
Liam looked so goddamn resolute Leo wanted to cry, “I love you for that, but have you truly thought about how this will change your life?”
A bright smile broke out across his brother’s face, “Not that much, to be honest. I was always going to play a huge role in your cabinet. This just means I’ll have a bigger role in Cordonia’s future, but other than that, nothing really changes for me.”
“Dad will expect you to pick a wife at the next social season,” Leo blew out a breath as his fingers fidgeted with his ear, “Are you ready for marriage?”
The smile on Liam’s face grew ever bigger, “Can I show you something?”
“Sure.”
Liam produced a ring box from his pocket and opened it, thrusting it toward Leo, “It was mom’s. I’m going to ask Riley to marry me! I was going to ask her anyway, so this changes nothing.”
“Wow!” Leo’s mouth fell open as he took the ring and stared down at it, “You’re really serious huh?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Liam asked, retrieving the box and closing it, “She’s amazing and I’d be a fool not to recognize that.”
“Shouldn’t you talk to her about if she’s willing to be queen?”
“We’ve talked about it.” Liam told him as he returned the crushed velvet box to his jacket pocket, “theoretically of course. Me being the spare has always carried the possibility that I could be thrust into your shoes. While I certainly hoped nothing bad ever happened to you, I always knew the person I married would have to be okay with the existence of that possibility.”
Leo stared at his younger brother in shock as a disbelieving laugh spilled out of him, “How the hell did you get so to be so goddamned mature and so much more emotionally aware than your older brother?”
Liam shrugged, “Maybe because I wasn’t forced to hide who I really am my entire life. It’s not right, the way dad has treated you.”
Leo felt tears well up in his eyes, “You’re really okay with this?”
“Are you kidding? My brother and my best friend being happy together? I am more than okay with it!”
Leo pulled his younger sibling into a tight embrace as he whispered, “Thank you!”
Leo’s eyes scanned the crowd of their loved ones. Friends and family. Everyone was there.
Well, almost everyone.
Not that he’d expected his father or his stepmother to attend. Constantine was still angry with him for…well, all of it. The abdication, the engagement to Drake, which the tabloids had picked up on. Even in America, the doings of a self-deposed prince were still fodder for the gossip mill.
The public at large couldn’t get enough of it.
His actions were reviled in the most repressive regimes and by the conservative half of his home country but celebrated by the rest of the world.
His adopted home, America, had been mostly welcoming, segments of it even rejoicing over the choices he had made for love. Love. His chest tightened as he glanced across the clearing at the man that would be his husband in less than an hour.
Drake’s family was gathered in the great room, laughing over a game of charades. Even after months of living with them, Leo was still amazed at the easy, comfortable way they interacted with each other. It was nothing like the way he had been raised. Being there was healing. Being accepted for who he was, and as a part of their family, was a balm to his troubled soul.
As the night wound down, he was seized with an impulse. Something he had been agonizing over suddenly seemed obvious and easy.
“Hey, babe,” he grabbed Drake by the hand as the other man walked passed him.
“Yeah?”
Leo smiled, impressed with his own inspiration, “I have a riddle for you.”
“Okay…”
“Do you want to know what your gay name is?”
“My gay name?”
“Yeah, your gay name!”
Drake shook his head with a laugh, “Are you drunk?”
“No. Yes. Maybe a little, but come on. Don’t you want to know?”
“Okay, I’ll play along,” Drake turned to him expectantly, “What is my gay name?”
“Well…it’s your first name…”
“Right….” Drake started to turn away, but Leo pulled him back. When Drake turned back to him, Leo slid down to one knee. Drake’s eyes widened, “What are you doing?”
“Your first name, and my last name….”
“What?”
“Or I don’t know….I could take your name?” After all, his last name was synonymous with his father, homophobia and bad parenting whereas the Walker family had welcomed him with open arms.
“Leo, are you serious?”
“I told you the day I got here that I wanted to marry you! Didn’t you believe me?”
“Yeah, but….I didn’t think…I mean….are you sure?” A hint of uncertainty flitted through Drake’s eyes. Leo knew he still harbored some idea that he hadn’t been worth abdicating the throne for. He was wrong. Being loved by Drake was worth everything.
Leo sprang to his feet, “I’ve never been more sure about anything in my life! Stop doubting yourself! You’re amazing, and everyone knows it but you! Now, are you going to give me an answer or are you going to leave me hanging?”
“Goddamn it, Leo!” Drake wiped at his eyes, “You’re going to make me cry! Again! Of fucking course I’ll marry you!”
Leo was happy. He didn’t miss his father, or his stepmother’s presence. His brother and sister-in-law were there for him. His best friend, Olivia, was there along with her now live in girlfriend, Hana.
But still. There was something…someone missing.
He sighed as he watched Bianca fuss with Drake’s tie.
Leo had been deprived of a loving mother not once, but twice in his young life. He barley remembered Helena; he’d been so young when she’d left. Eleanor had been kind and loving and treated him no differently than she had Liam. She had considered him her son too, in more than just name and Leo had been happy again, for a while. Her death had been as hard on him as it had on his brother.
Bianca made her way over to Leo next, “Well, I came to help you with your tie, but I see you don’t need it.”
Leo gave her a dimpled smile, “Side effect of being a prince I suppose. Dressing well is literally in the job description. I could tie a tie before I could tie my shoes.”
Bianca reached up and pinched his cheeks, “I love that smile!” She’d sure seen a lot of it since he’d been at the ranch.
And not just his. She shot a quick glance at her son who was beaming with joy as he laughed with his sister and a group of his childhood friends. She’d never seen him so happy, and she was grateful for it. She couldn’t doubt Leo’s love for him, he’d given up a throne and a crown to be with him. Not only that, but he’d come to the ranch ready to pitch in and work. She couldn’t imagine anyone better to have as a son-in-law.
Leo caught her hand in his with a rare earnestness in his eyes, “Thank you, Bianca. For everything.”
“You’re welcome, Leo,” she shook her head with a smile, “But you’ve given as much to this family as it has to you. I’m not pushing, and you don’t have to if you’re not comfortable with it, but you can call me mom if you want.”
A lump rose up in his throat. He absolutely wanted to. Before he could respond, a commotion at the gate drew his attention. Security was arguing with a woman. A woman who looked dressed to attend a wedding. “What the hell?” His eyes tracked from the gate to Bianca to Drake then back again.
Drake was on the other side of the clearing, oblivious to the ruckus going on as his sister tried unsuccessfully to fix his hair. He swiped at her hand and knocked the brush to the ground. Leo could hear Savanah’s frustrated yelp from where he was standing.
“Let’s go find out,” Bianca headed toward the gate and Leo strode after her. Bianca had welcomed him into her home and her family. She had treated him as another child. He was not about to let her deal with whatever was happening at the gate without backup. It was probably just an overzealous reporter, but still.
They closed the distance quickly.
“I’m sorry, ma’am,” the guard was pushing the woman back toward the gate, “it’s by invitation only.”
“How did you let a reporter get past the main gate?” Bianca demanded.
“Sorry, Mrs. Walker, she just-“
“I’m not a reporter!”
Something about that voice struck a chord deep inside Leo. He froze as he tried to get a look at her. “Stop! Let her go!”
The bodyguard looked to Bianca for confirmation. When she nodded, he released the woman. The guard stepped away leaving him an unobstructed view of a tall, middle-aged, blond-haired woman with the same ocean blue eyes he saw in the mirror every morning.
A multitude of emotions hit him in the chest all at once, “Mom?”

And yes, fuck Constantine!
In Your Room Chapter 9: Okay, I Love You

A/N: There will be one more chapter to kind of wrap things up. Don't panic, I know some of you don't want Dreo to end, there may be one-shots and they will likely show up in other fics as well. This is simply the end of this particular story.
My other stuff: Master List.
Tumblr media
“What are you blathering about?” Constantine demanded, face red with fury.
“I’m telling you that if you don’t change the rules of succession to allow me to marry another man, then I’m going to abdicate completely!” Leo was dealing with some fury of his own.
“That’s preposterous!” His father bellowed, “You’re on track to marry Kiara Theron, who will make a perfectly acceptable queen! If you don’t fancy her, then choose someone else at the next social season! If you want to…experiment, or whatever, do so outside your marriage. A Cordonian Arrangement is a simple matter to-“
“You’re not listening!” Leo leaned forward and pounded both fists on the desk in front of him, “I am in love with a man! I will not marry anyone else!”
Constantine paused, peering at his son through slitted eyes. The fool boy was serious. The gears in his brain spun as he looked for a solution. There was no way he was ever going to allow such a thing, but he didn’t want his son to do something impulsive like actually abdicate. He needed to buy time. “Who is it?”
“What?” Leo blinked in confusion at his father’s sudden change in demeanor.
“Who are you in love with, son?” His voice had gone eerily calm.
Suddenly wary, Leo’s guard went up, “That doesn’t matter. Whom I marry should be up to me, that’s the point!”
Constantine steepled his fingers and cocked his head to one side as he studied his oldest child. The stupid shortsighted idiot was serious. He was actually ready to chuck it all-the throne, his future-and for what? Perhaps a different tact was in order, “Even if I agree to your terms, the council will never capitulate.”
“Then I’ll abdicate. Liam can be king.” He had never really wanted it anyway.
Constantine considered his words carefully, “I’ll give you my blessing and go to bat with the council for you under two conditions.”
“What are they?” Leo asked suspiciously.
“First, you must talk to your brother. You can’t seriously be considering dropping the crown in his lap without so much as a heads up.”
“That….that’s fair….”
“Take him into town, to the city square, by the library, the museum of history, and the statue of our ancestor. I think you both could use a reminder of what’s at stake.”
“Okay. What else?”
“Then come home and sleep on it. If you still feel this way in the morning, we can have a serious discussion about it, but I refuse to even entertain this notion until you have taken the time to truly reflect and consider all of the factors that are at play here.”
Leo hesitated. He didn’t trust his father, but he could find no trap, no trick, no downside to doing as he asked. It was less than twenty-four hours. Leo already knew that he wouldn’t be changing his mind, but if humoring his father would speed up and simplify the process, that would be easier on everyone. “Okay, you have a deal.”
Constantine stared after his son for a long minute as he considered his next move. Unlike his progeny, he wasn’t an idiot. He paid more attention to the goings-on of his children than they thought he did. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who Leo thought he was in love with.
He lifted his phone and dialed, “Bas. Let me know when Leo has left the premises, then send Drake Walker up to my private office.”
Tumblr media
Leo called Liam and asked him to meet him out front, then he called down to the garage and had a car pulled around. He needed to do one last thing before he left.
He knocked on Drake’s door, the familiar butterflies swooping through his stomach as he heard the deep, rumbly voice call out, “Come in!”
“Hey, babe, I just wanted to- oh! Sorry!” He stopped when he saw the phone in Drake’s hand.
Drake covered the mouthpiece and whispered, “It’s my mom.”
“Ah.” Leo knew that he wasn't the only one being pushed toward a particular future. Drake's mom had been pushing him hard lately about moving to Texas to help her run the family ranch.
He had wanted to explain everything to Drake before he met with Liam, but he knew these conversations could drag out and Drake was always in a bad mood after.
He wouldn’t be gone more than a couple of hours. It could wait.
“I have a meeting,” he said in a stage whisper, then pointing to his wrist, “I’ll be back in a couple of hours. Can we talk then?”
Drake nodded and gave him a thumbs-up as he continued to argue with his mother.
Leo blew a kiss to his boyfriend and backed out of the room with a smile, confident about their future for the first time.
Tumblr media
“Sir?” Drake shifted uncomfortably in his seat as he glanced nervously around the king’s office. He had known the man most of his life, but he’d never been summoned to his office before.
“I said I know about your relationship with my son, are you going to deny it?”
“Liam and I-“
“Don’t play dumb with me, boy. It doesn’t suit you.”
Drake let out a nervous scoff, “I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but-“
“I know your fucking Leo. The future king of Cordonia. And it has to stop.”
“Leo’s a grown man, I think he can make his own-“
“Drake,” Constantine adopted a sympathetic tone, “I didn’t call you here to argue with you. I called you here to spare you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Leo cares about you, son, so he would never tell you this himself, because he doesn’t want to hurt you, but he understands his obligations and he’s committed to his role as monarch. He knows that he has to pick a wife and produce heirs for the throne.”
“Sure, but-“
Constantine pulled a stack of papers from his desk drawer and slid them across the top, “He’s already chosen. This is the preliminary marriage contract between Houses Rys and Theron.”
Drake’s eyes dipped down to scan the legal document, dated last week. His heart dropped. He reached for it, but the king pulled it away before he could flip to the end to check for signatures. “Why are you showing me this?”
“Because I care about you too, son. You’ve grown up under my roof. You’re Liam’s best friend. But Leo has a legacy, a future, and responsibilities. He will be the next king. There’s no room for you in that picture. If you stay, you’ll only end up hurt, but you’ll hurt my son first.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean Leo does care about you, but that isn’t love. He feels guilty that he has inadvertently misled you. I can see him trying to juggle his duties while trying to spare your feelings for a while until they get in the way of him doing his job. It won’t end well. Not for him, not for you. You’ll be a distraction he doesn’t need and doesn’t want, and he’ll start to resent you for it.”
“He told you all this?” Drake fought back the tears that sprang unbidden to his eyes.
“Yes. Earlier today. He confided in me about the obstacles in his path. I’m sorry, son, I really am, but if you truly care about Leo, you won’t stand in his way.”
That must be what Leo wanted to talk to him about he realized as his worst fear materialized.
He wouldn’t put either of them through that. He’d pack and leave right away, give in to his mother’s demands. It was best for everyone that way.
Tumblr media
The conversation with Liam had gone far better than Leo had expected. Liam had been supportive of his decision and thrilled that he wanted to pursue a more permanent relationship with Drake.
Leo went straight to Drake’s room, bursting with the news.
He didn’t find Drake in his room. He found an empty closet and a note on the nightstand.
Cordonia is your future, the ranch is mine. I love you, Leo, and because of that, I can’t stand in your way. You’re going to be a great king, I know it.
Tears fell down his face, dropping onto the paper and smearing the ink. “Goddamn it!” He crumpled the paper and threw it across the room.
Fucking Constantine.
This was his father’s doing, he knew it.
He scrambled across the room to retrieve the note from where he had thrown it, smoothing it out and tracing his fingers across the words I love you.
He slumped against the door frame and cried.
Tumblr media
There was a knock on his bedroom door. Drake didn’t bother to turn toward it. He yelled out from under the covers, “Go away, Mom! I told you I don’t want any-“
The door opened anyway, “It’s not your mom.”
“Leo?” Drake spun in the bed and jumped out of it, frantically combing his fingers through his hair as he wondered if he stank. When was the last time he’d taken a shower? He ran his tongue across his teeth hoping his breath was okay. What the fuck was Leo doing in his bedroom in Texas? He was supposed to be on the other side of the ocean, getting ready for the beginning of the social season.
“What are you doing here?” Drake demanded as he darted into his closet for a clean t-shirt.
“I came to see you. Thought that was obvious.”
“Hahaha. You know what I mean. The social season starts next week! You should be-“
“I abdicated.”
“You did what?” Drake yelped.
“I abdicated…I thought you would approve.” He had drawn up his articles of abdication and filed them with the council in an emergency, off-the-books meeting he had called without his father’s knowledge or presence.
Because fuck Constantine.
“Why the fuck would I approve of that, Leo?”
“Because you’ve always hated the nobility, much less the monarchy, and all the bullshit that goes with it!”
“So? We’re not talking about me; we’re talking about you! This is your birthright! Why the fuck would you give that up?”
“Because I don’t want all the shit that comes with it!” Leo was red in the face now. Why wasn’t he getting it? “There are other things I want to do with my life! I’m sick of my dad controlling every little fucking thing that I do!”
“He won’t live forever, Leo, and this is your life we’re talking about! The throne, ruling, Cordonia, these things are your destiny! Remember when you thought I was dropping out of college and throwing my life away? Remember how pissed you got?”
“Yeah, but that was different! This is about something important! If you’d just fucking listen-“
“Something important?” Drake snorted incredulously, “What the fuck could be more important than the crown, Leo? Huh? What?”
“You, you fucking idiot, you! You’re more important!”
Drake stopped in his tracks, “What?”
“You heard me you fucking asshole! I gave up the crown so I could be with you! I mean…if you want that…”
“I don’t understand…”
“Are you slow?”
“No, but-“
“Your note said that you loved me, is that true?”
“Yes, but-“
“No buts. Cordonia isn’t my future, you are! And if Texas is where you need to be then I guess I’ll have to learn to rope a bull or what the fuck ever cowboys do.”
“You want a future with me?” Did Leo Rys just say he’d learn how to rope a bull? For him?
“Yes! Have you heard a word I said?”
“But your dad said that you didn’t love me and that you just didn’t want to hurt my feelings and that I would be standing in your way….oh….he lied to me?”
“I don’t know what he told you, but none of it was true! The day you left, I told him that if he didn’t change the laws of succession to allow me to marry you then I was going to abdicate, and he said-“
“Wait! You want to marry me?”
“Oh…uh…..yeah, I do. I love you, too, Drake and I’m so fucking sorry that I didn’t tell you sooner! Maybe then you wouldn’t have believed my father and left me and-“
Drake jumped onto the bed and off the other side in record time. He took Leo’s face in his hands and brought his lips to his in a crushing kiss. When he pulled away, they were both breathless, “Are you sure, Leo? I never asked you to give up-“
“I know you didn’t, but Cordonia has Liam. All I want is you! Please don’t give me a hard time about this!”
Drake considered him seriously for a moment, “You really want to live here? On the ranch?”
“I don’t care where we live. As long as I’m with you, I’m happy!”
“Goddamn it, Leo!” Drake brushed tears from his eyes, “Who knew you could be so fucking sappy?”
“Are you….are you crying? Is Drake Walker showing feelings?”
“Shut up!” Drake laughed, “And go lock the door. I want to show you exactly how I feel!”
And just like that, the future opened up in front of them again.
