This is not accurate for Munchkin breeding. You can breed short-legged Munchkin to short-legged Munchkin and produce healthy kittens. It’s a better idea to breed a short-legged Munchkin to a standard-legged Munchkin to reduce the chance that one of the kittens might get a lethal double dose but it does not make an entire litter nonviable or even defective. Munchkin cats share the same type of genetic difference as dachshund and corgi dogs and the same type of breeding applies. It is possible to get a lethal gene combo but it’s rare and responsible breeders avoid it. The problem isn’t the cat breed, it’s the irresponsible breeders who don’t understand what the genetic mutation of a standard Munchkin is or what it does.  Source: I’ve owned Munchkins since 1991, I bred Munchkin cats for 12 years as part of the group that was doing long-term studies on the breed itself to see if skeletal or other genetic problems occurred later in life, since in the 90s there was no documentation about this breed. The reason I went looking is because in my immediate family are two people who were born with Achondroplasia dwarfism and I am intimately aware of what health problems go along with that and back when I started, Munchkinism was listed as ‘achondroplasia for cats’. I went LOOKING for health problems, skeletal problems later in life, disk/joint compression, arthritis. And I didn’t find anything other than the longbone shortening that makes the breed. I’ve spent thousands of dollars having every Munchkin of my lines who died necropsied. In those 12 years, I lost one kitten to a lethal double-dose, it was a fully-formed stillborn and showed no deformities. I had one kitten with a facial deformity stillborn - that was a short-legged Munchkin bred to a standard Applehead Siamese and the facial deformity is documented in Siamese breeds so I highly doubt it was the Munchkin gene that caused it.  The reason I went looking for leg/paw arthritis was because I was convinced that you couldn’t have a cat with legs that short and that much extra pressure on paws and NOT have it - but you don’t see it often in Munchkins, definitely not anything more than you’d see in any average moggie. I saw an average of 17 years for lifespan. My oldest died at 24, the youngest one I ever lost was 14 and died due to CKD, the first time I’ve ever seen that in any of my cats, even the rando strays that have chosen us as Their People. I wasn’t breeding them for profit, my breed line was admittedly small because I wanted to do a generational study. My breedline started in 1999, there are still two living kittens from my very first litter being pampered Grand Dames with my brother.  I stopped breeding them when people started deliberately breeding in defects like twisty-legged, pigeon-chested, or that poor rughugger baby up there in an attempt to come up with the new short-legged craze. Those are traits that should never have been bred in and they are not recognized as breed standard for a reason. When people started breeding Munchkins to Scottish Folds, I noped right tf out. That’s outright asking for lethalities and cats that won’t live without pain. That’s not something an ethical person, much less a breeder, should ever do. Every time I see someone post a MunchkinFold and coo about how cute it is, I wince because I know what went into that cat and how many kittens that breeder’s lost to produce it. I know what that adorable precious baby is looking forward to - a shortened life with a whole lot of skeletal pain - that didn’t come from the Munchkin half, but every single Scottish Fold comes with degenerative joint/disc as part of that adorable folded ear package. They come with a high risk of spinal compression. Adding short legs to that is just cruel.  A regular short-legged Munchkin can do everything a regular cat can do. They can jump, they can play, they can groom themselves just fine. They don’t suffer spinal compression or paw/spine arthritis any more than any regular cat does - far less than some like the Manx or Scottish Fold breeds. In a standard Munchkin, the only difference is a shortening of the long bones of the legs. It makes them walk a little stumpier but they’re fine.   The rughugger pictured, that’s not standard Munchkin physique. That would be something akin to Diastrophic dwarfism and that poor cat would have some problems. I’d kind of like to smack whoever bred them like that. I don’t know what they’re calling that cat but that? Is not a standard Munchkin.  What people like or don’t is entirely up to them, you don’t have to like Munchkins. I don’t like Scottish Folds or Manxes or anything that I know is just a walking bag of bad genes. I can’t look at those and think ‘oh what a cute cat’, I wince thinking ‘oh that poor baby’. I think Sphynxes are adorable goblins but the heart problems that are rampant in the breed make me think they’re not a good idea as a breed either. Like that poor rughugger, most of the current breed problems with Sphynxes were caused by the crazy inbreeding/line breeding that happened when the breed gained popularity in the 90s/00s. Same thing happened to Munchkins. Same thing that’s happened to almost any ‘purebred’ line when people started treating the cats as commodities.  Basically the tl;dr of this is ‘the standard Munchkin breed isn’t a problem here, it’s what non-ethical breeders have done with it’.
Hey so basically munchkin cats were actually a naturally occuring phenomenon from a genetic mutation, meaning that your average cat can actually give birth to a munchkin. Obviously they can breed two munchkin cats and get more but theres also the possibility their babies wont have the genetic mutation
I mean, a ton of breeds were created out of a surprise gene. Hairless cats, folds, etc.  And the litters of many of these breeds come out mixed, like manxes.  But the random appearance of a new trait isn’t the same as deliberately pursuing it as part of a breed.  So no, munchkins still shouldn’t be a breed, IMO.  :(
I’m sure that’s going to be unpopular (and possibly hypocritical given my unabashed adoration of hairless breeds), but there it is.  They just can’t do normal cat things.  Watching them is painful.  They try, but they just…can’t act like cats.  They’re bred because they’re “cute”, which oh my GOD they absolutely are, but for as much as they are here for us (we domesticated and bred them, after all, they are no longer wild, they’re companion animals), we need to be here for them.  We are responsible for their well-being on both an individual and overall level. That means not encouraging breeding for extremes.
Dried Pickle Man is a purebred himalayan (from a rescue, not directly from a breeder) and I can tell you brachycephalic breeds are a terrible idea. I love his flat little face and round little noggin, I can’t imagine him without his funny snaggle tooth and twisted nose, I LOVE his ridiculous truffle pig noises, but he should have had the chance to be a healthy, normal cat. Instead he has serious cranial deformities that cost him an eye and some of the use of his mouth, and he has kidney disease which is common in the breed.  He has a great life with people who love him, but the genetic hand he was dealt still isn’t fair to him.
IDK, I just feel really strongly about it.  It’s a super complicated issue, and I won’t take anyone down for liking munchkins/folds/manxes/persians or owning them or whatever, as long as they are cared for.  I guess my ire is really aimed at “breeders” who tolerate harmful traits in pursuit of a certain look, and who sometimes lie about the health risks associated with their bloodlines or with the breed overall.  There are breeds and bloodlines that are healthy and sound, and that is something we should demand from all breeds.
We just need to care for our domesticated species better than we do.  Not just individually, but on a wider level.  All cats, all dogs, all horses, etc. We can do this by refusing to tolerate irresponsible breeding and breeding for appearance over health.  They give us their love and companionship.  We owe them that.  We absolutely owe them that.
(I am not against purebred animals, responsible breeders, or owners of purebred animals, just so everyone knows. It’s only when the animals come second that I start to get stroppy.)

This is Jetty. I had pneumonia through most of October, was in the hospital on and off (more on than off) for several weeks, and am still recovering, which is why things are slow. I left the Goo Swamp because H. and I don’t work well together, and the Goo Swamp was originally her idea, so I am leaving it to her. The Swap was my idea, and it is now standalone.
TLDR: She asked for my input on something, and when I gave it, she didn’t like it - and instead of talking to ME about it in our Discord PM, she got her panties in a twist on several public Discords, so I not only got to read about her upset second-hand, I got to see a lot of other people chiming in on something that should have been a discussion between just her and I. While I was coughing so badly I could barely see, much less type, and couldn’t keep up with anything. I didn’t feel like I deserved that, and said so. I probably could have been nicer when I said my piece, but I was really upset because there was literally nothing else in our private chat, but she was blowing up and being upset on no less than three public Discords without the courtesy of talking to me, which is why I had my own panties in a twist.
Without hearing another peep out of her for a week, I get another PM with “I’m sorry for what I did, it was uncalled for, and oh by the way please give me your input again on this thing again now that it’s edited?” The thing she had already blown up at me about once before. While I appreciated the apology, I no longer felt like I could actually give her my opinion. I didn’t trust she wouldn’t do the same thing all over again, and I’m really not in a place to deal with that on top of everything else right now. If I can’t trust someone enough to be able to talk to them, I can’t work with them. I sent her a polite letter telling her so, and suggesting she copy the Goo Swamp text/data to another post that she controls, and have the mods lock mine. That appears to be what she is doing.  Granted, I am pretty Teflon and if this had hit at any other time, it’d probably have just rolled right off me, but my level of cope was already low and this pushed it straight into nopesville. It hit at the wrong time, and for my own wellbeing, I needed to check out, and that’s what I did. The general rule of dealing with me is that if you have a problem with me, bring it to me. If I’ve hurt your feelings, call me on it. I generally don’t try to hurt people, I’m usually more than happy to make them whole if I have. But I have to know, and I prefer to know from *them*, not from reading hours worth of backscroll on a Discord channel.
re: shadow goo swamp
I’m pretty sure JD left the Goo Swamp because of H. There was a nasty argument a while back on one of Shadow’s many Discord servers and it looked like JD was pretty offended by something involving H.
It’s too bad, I really liked JD. Looks like the Swap will be a standalone now, at least.

[Meetup Planning] DragonCon 2018
Since my post on FR disappeared without a word from the Mods..[edit: Mods chimed in claiming it was ‘risky’ and couldn’t be allowed on the site. I’m part of a lot of online games who regularly have meetups irl, so..]
General idea planning for a potential meetup at DragonCon 2018.
Dates: Aug 30-Sept 3, 2018 Where: Atlanta, GA, USA
Thoughts: The Marriott Marquis is charging $550+/night for a room, they pre-charge the entire fee to a credit card, and you only have one day to cancel before they keep your money - so the meetup will not be happening at the main hotel. Overflow hotels are nearby, but they'll also be outrageously expensive. I can find entire 5br houses on AirBnB for <$200/night, and they have free parking. (Atlanta hotels notoriously charge for parking, and raise prices during DragonCon).
My thoughts are twofold: - Rent a house for myself and a limited number of FR people to stay at for a reasonable amount of monies, with the bonus that we could all spend quality time playing with our digital dragons. Arrange for there to be an available number of space in rental cars for the people in the house to get to/from the con. Assuming around a $200/night fee, it'd be ~$1000 for the weekend for the house, so around $200/250/ per person for the weekend depending how many people were staying there. Space in cars would cost a little more - haven't yet priced out renting a large van/suv for the weekend. People in the house would have to be 21+. This is mostly a frugality option for Potential Other People - if this aspect is shot down, no worries, I have no problem staying somewhere by my lonesome and moving on to the second public portion.
- Find a space near the Con, available by walking or public transit, for an 'open to every FR person who wants to come' meetup. One of my thoughts was finding a city park and renting a picnic shelter for a day. The space would have to have wifi.
Would this be of interest to anyone? I love DragonCon, haven't been in years, but I also get peopled-out very, very quickly, so I like the idea of having somewhere to retreat to that's not surrounded by the writhing sea of humanity at the convention. I thought DragonCon would be a fun venue for a FR meetup.. hooowwweeever, it's one of the more expensive conventions, and it's massive in scope, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea.
At this time, I'm not looking to organize the meetup elsewhere - if this idea is thumbs-downed, I'll look into doing a much smaller, more local meetup in my area instead.
Pipe-dream wishlist - having the meetup have its own 'FR artists alley', but that's a pipe dream at this point. - Organizing a video chat/coordinated Discord that people could log into from afar.

Hi, this is JettyDoor @ FR. You may think it’s a joke, but we’re laughing all the way to the bank. We raise at least 100kt/week for the Treasury. Our very first game raised 1mil. The Swap averages about 20/25kt/day. Unless you’re matching that in daily or weekly donations, feel free to fold your comment into all sharp corners and shove it up your nether orifice, Negative Nonny. Have a nice day!
Shadow swamp
The swamp “fundraisers” in Shadow are so stupid. Does anyone play those stupid games or want to trade anything for the trash apparel and fams lol? What a joke.

Rose goblin derg, based on the rose goblins in the Toby Daye novels. Of course then I had to get a matching prickly fam for her.
