if your history fave is truly problematic, you've gotta lean into that shit. I think certain stans would be so much more tolerable if they just accepted that this historical figure was deeply flawed, did bad things/harmed others, made poor choices, etc., and that they still find them neat. no need to mitigate or excuse. just own it.

alison weir is a menace and her books have had a deleterious effect on the general public's understanding of tudor history (quoting a friend there), part 12323526:
ok, so, if you're like me, when you come across a quote from a biography that you don't recognise, you will often search the quote to see if it comes up in any others, or what is available of the bho archives by general search. as such, i found this:
"[Elizabeth] told Mrs Ashley that she [had] 'loved the Admiral too well' [...]"
except...what was in quotes showed up in nothing except weir's books, author's notes, and websites.
so. apparently. as per @theladyelizabeth ...this was, as is common with weir, a complete misquote/misattribution.
the primary source in question was thomas parry, and the quote is not that elizabeth loved thomas seymour 'too well' (or...at all), but this:
"[he] loved her but too well, and had so done a good while."

Being a Jewish historian is really just like: This was built by Jewish slaves. There’s an unmarked mass grave of Jews who were killed in a pogrom under that town. This was built with money stolen from Jews. That painting was stolen from a Jewish family who died in the Shoah. That church/mosque was a synagogue that was converted after all the Jews were expelled. Those houses belonged to Jewish families for centuries.

I love how often people on this site call random things which they disagree with but don't have any actual argument against either puritan or catholic, regardless of the subject in question's actual relevance to either puritanism or catholicism. it's like 17th century england in here

depicting sexual assault in media is not an endorsement of it 🤝 it's reasonable for audiences to expect a certain level of care and awareness in its presentation 🤝 there is oftentimes an over-reliance on sexual violence in creating the backstories, trajectories, and conflicts of fictional women 🤝 sexual violence is prevalent in society and stories about it do need to be told as a reflection of our reality 🤝 sometimes male writers and directors are extremely bad at telling these stories and audiences are justified in demanding better

Portrait of Anne of Cleves, Hans Holbein the Younger
1539
Lourve Museum, Paris
Holbein was sent to paint her at Düren in summer 1539, so that Henry could appraise her as a possible wife. Holbein posed Anne square-on and in elaborate finery.  Henry was disappointed with her in the flesh, and he divorced her after a brief, unconsummated marriage. He redesignated Anne as “king’s sister”, and she remained in England, where she died during the reign of Queen Mary
The use of parchment suggests that Holbein painted, or at least began, the portrait in Düren. A miniature version in the Victoria and Albert Museum was probably painted at the same time. Holbein also produced a portrait of Anne’s sister, Amelia, which is now lost. Nicholas Wotton, the head of the English delegation, reported to Henry: “Your Grace’s servant Hanze Albein hathe taken th'effigies of my lady Anne and the lady Amelye and hath expressed theyr images very lyvely”. The tradition that Holbein flattered Anne is not borne out by the evidence: no one except Henry ever described her as repugnant.

I don’t know how to say this in a way that doesn’t sound like I’m advocating for casual cruelty or whatever but something that grates so much about this current social moment is how many people are incapable of saying they dislike something or someone without cooking up some higher morally correct reason for their dislike. Sometimes you just disliked a book. Sometimes you don’t “get” an actor or a musician. There’s nothing morally wrong with your girl’s fuckass boyfriend he’s literally just annoying and you’re annoyed that you have to pretend you like him when you know he’ll be history in six months. It’s fine. You don’t need to justify your dislike.

Leftists on the internet nitpicking Jonathan Glazer’s words and downplaying what he said about the violence in Gaza meanwhile everyone to the right of liberals is having a full scale five alarm meltdown calling for Glazer’s head and saying he’s a self-hating Jew for daring to say what he said so maybe it’s time to get some perspective girls

it's the way american leftists will insist on separating themselves from their government because, you know, a single governing force does not represent an entire country full of people with differing opinions. and then they absolutely refuse to apply that logic to non-western countries.
