“Smoke alert downstairs,” he tells you, indicating your cigarette, “but don’t worry, I shut it down before anyone else see. No one knows your secret.” There’s a twinkle in his eye that you spot even in the low light. Reluctantly you admit to yourself that you like this guy, unsubtle as he is. Maybe the unsubtlety is the point, masking everything by exposing everything.

You offer him the cigarettes wordlessly, and he shrugs and takes one. “Bad habit,” he comments, leaning forward for you to light it for him. In the brief flash of flame you see his eyes, so blue as to be the sea or the sky in miniature, and it gives you pause. Who was he before all of this, before the serum and the superheroics? Can he even remember that time, before the man turned into a symbol?

He takes a puff and regards the city skyline, so busy as to blur out almost all the stars. “I once hated America so much,” he says. “Now it is my home. Strange, eh?”

“Do you miss Russia?” you ask impulsively.
