Even as a French person, I feel so offended that people would come all the way to the Louvre to see pieces of art which never belonged to France and have absolutely nothing to do with the French culture, rather than go see them where they were born and made. They aren't just objects, they are the bits of culture, history and ancestry which have been stolen from their rightful owners and it's not okay. Replicas are necessary, and nothing beats truly discovering a culture on its very ground.
Exactly! I know many people from France, Germany, the UK now see that the stolen artifacts should be returned to their respective owners and this definitely is consoling. Your feelings about this issue is exactly what I imagine I would feel, were I in a similar position. If people came to Greece to see a famous museum that had little to do with Greece, I would feel bad. Whoever wants to experience France goes to France and whoever wants to see Greek culture must pay a visit to Greece. If the interest is not that passionate, then the replicas are more than enough to satisfy the tourists and educate them.
I agree so much with the last thing you said. Wouldn’t it be crazy or utterly unsatisfying to go to, say, India to see french architecture and art?! I don’t see why people can’t understand it is exactly the same the other way around. Greek sculptures are not meant to be crammed in British halls right next to 30 other rooms with a completely different style of artifacts. Whoever thinks they learn about world history that way fools themselves. No, this is just a chaotic impersonal art gallery of all sorts of art styles. A chaos of information invades your brain and you can not feel connected to the place of origin or understand its people and the essence of this culture.
Every culture is a product of its own environment and people - this is where it makes sense and creates harmony and brings out its character. The Louvre is beyond doubt majestic but Nice of Samothrace and Venus de Milo are just two masterpieces amongst a chaos of other masterpieces. The real impact would be if original Nice of Samothrace was not even in Athens honestly but, well, in Samothrace, next to the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. And Venus de Milo would have a different impact in Milos with its outstanding volcanic white rocky landscapes. At least there people would actually understand what “de Milo” really means.
It’s just like with France. I can’t imagine any Eiffel Tower or any palace or all this beautiful french artistry and architecture anywhere but in France and that’s where I’d want to see and experience it. It would feel wrong otherwise. It’s the same with Greece and every single country in the world and I wish more people could understand it like we do.
