This is a commissioned portrait I made for @sonja_krol to honour the late Paula Verdurmen. In doing this commission I got to learn about who Paula was, how kind and positive she always was. I tried to reflect the sense I got of Paula in the bright and warm colours. I love the process of collaborating in commissions and. making something that goes beyond the photo reference. Sometimes when I'm painting a portrait I find myself coming up with a whole back story for the figure - does anyone else do that? 🤭 This piece was inspired by a reference picture from the #100headschallenge. This painting was my own take on American Gothic by Grant Wood. This was the hardest painting I have ever painted. I've never painted a self portrait before and painting this piece really forced me to confront some of the things I'm insecure or uncomfortable about. That being said, I think I grew a lot by painting this piece and I'm actually really proud of how it turned out!
