I’ve seen this concept been floated around, but it’s been thoroughly stuck in my head. Imagine that, during Spiders time at the RDA, there where several attempts to “humanize” him, like cutting off his hair, making him wear clothes, forcefully connecting him to a side of himself he doesn’t like. When he comes back to the sully kids, they’re overjoyed, yeah, but there’s something…off about him. A little too human and a little less Navi.

Hey friends!!
So I’m currently looking at starting a coming of age book that primarily focuses on overcoming trauma, mental health struggles, etc, and learning to love where you are. It’s a fantasy book and will feature quite a few real issues as all of the characters will have some form of trauma they need to face. This varies drastically, however, I’m having a bit of trouble with one character in particular.
One of the characters I want to include as a lead is a boy who is a survivor of a drive by shooting. He grew up in a rough area and ended up getting pulled into some illegal activity. For him, this was in the form of petty things like stealing from the gas station, vandalism, etc. However, one of his friends ends up in trouble and ends up becoming the victim of a drive by shooting while they’re trying to buy beer. The case is treated as a statistic and gets wiped under the rug drastically. The character suffers PTSD and an identity crisis, ending up sort of numb for a long time.
This is very similar to the area I grew up in and a situation near to me, however, I’m white and this character to me feels like he should be BIPOC or Latino. I want my cast to be diverse and realistic and I think this scenario feeds moreso into POC. I was hoping for any advice in writing him or other POC characters in their trauma? I was avoiding trauma centered around race as I can’t speak on the experience, however, I feel like it shouldn’t be ignored here.
Looking for advice for this, any other things regarding characters of color, or any thoughts on building this character or one similar. This is a story still In the very early stages so any thoughts are welcome. I’m willing to change the character and such if needed but I was hoping for some advice before I make that move.

Yes I understand that having him remain human would be great for his character arc and inner conflict but also give me Navi spider LOOK AT HIM

More Japanese language headcanons for the TMNT boys that nobody asked for!
These are my head canons of how the TMNT boys address each other when speaking Japanese.
I see much of the fandom, particularly fans of the 2012 series, have the younger turtle brothers refer to Leo directly as お兄さん (onii-san) and often have the older brothers refer to the younger ones as 弟 (otouto) in fan fics and it’s had me thinking more about how I think the turtles would interact with each other in Japanese. お兄さん (onii-san) is very formal and actually creates distance between siblings, implying they do not have a close relationship when used. It’s usually used to refer to another person’s older brother, or sometimes to talk about your own brother to a third party. 弟 (otouto) is never used to directly address one’s younger brother. So here are my own personal head canons of how I think the turtles would actually address each other in Japanese.
I 100% believe that Raph and Donnie would call Leo 兄貴 (aniki) when speaking directly to him. 兄貴 (aniki) is interesting, because those somewhat familiar with Japanese media might recognize this word as one used by Yakuza, the Japanese mafia, to refer to those in a higher position than them. However, it is also used by close siblings either seriously or as a kind of joke. I think Raph and Donnie would use it for Leo both ways depending on the situation. And I think Donnie would use it for Raph, too. As for Mikey, I think it depends on the version. Most Mikeys would probably use 兄貴 (aniki) too, except for 2012 Mikey. He seems like he would be more likely to use 兄ちゃん (nii-chan) to refer directly to each of his older brothers. Dropping the honorific お (O) at the beginning and adding -chan instead of -san is a much more natural way for a younger brother to address an older brother he has a close relationship with. It also sounds more innocent and child-like coming from the speaker which is why I think 2012 Mikey is most likely to use it, but I think 2003 Mikey would use it when trying to suck up to his older brothers to get what he wants or get away with something. I think 2003 Donnie might occasionally use  兄ちゃん (nii-chan) for Raph because they seem to have that kind of relationship with Donnie calling Raph, “Raphie”, in the show.
How older brothers refer to younger brothers is more simple. They would likely use the brother’s name or nickname followed by the suffix ~ちゃん (-chan), or simply use their name without a suffix like we do in English. I think Leo is most likely to use ~ちゃん (-chan) when speaking to Mikey. Sometimes he’d use it with Donnie, but never Raph. Raph is always just Raph.
Raph always adds ~ちゃん (-chan) to Donnie and Mikey’s names when speaking to them in Japanese, and Donnie always uses it to refer to Mikey.
They all address April as 姉ちゃん (nee-chan meaning older sister) when speaking to each other about her. She doesn’t speak Japanese, but she asks Splinter one day why they sometimes call her Nee-chan, and she is delighted to learn they think of her that way.
Anyway, I’m by no means saying don’t use Onii-san and Otouto in your fics or anything. I just wanted to provide some more natural alternatives for anyone out there interested in sprinkling a little authentic Japanese into their fics to keep bilingual readers invested in the story. Do with this info what you will.

ppl who don’t like Spider cause he’s cringey>>>>ppl who don’t like Spider cause of the ending
❌SPOILERS FOR AVATAR WoW ❌🙀⁉️🙀
(Pls don’t take this too seriously I just really like Spider 😭) PERSONALLY… I think ppl who don’t like Spider solely bc of the ending are quite dense lol. I mean think abt it: he’s a kid with absolutely no guidance; the only family he’s ever known doesn’t even consider him family and doesn’t want him around for the most part.
He saved his dad after he saved him (Neytiri DEFINITELY would’ve killed him theres no question abt that)I think this is bc now he doesn’t owe anything to anyone… he probably has had so much species discrimination and questioning. Also I think it’s completely valid that Neytiri doesn’t accept him but… he’s more Na’vi then her own husband used to be. Just cause he doesn’t look it doesn’t mean he isn’t Na’vi in every way that counts. Her husband lived a fully human life and had to learn how to be Na’vi and yet she discriminates against Spider for literally being born Pandoran. (Still love her tho 🙏💪) honestly if I was as naive and lonely as Spider I prolly would’ve done the same thing. It hurts bc a lot of the movie was abt Lo’ak not fitting in when SPIDER WAS RIGHT THERE.
At the end of the movie when jake said “a son for a son” it warmed my heart but I just feel so bad for him bc he tried so hard to fit in (he was literally being BRAINWASHED and still didn’t say anything) if spider ever does get his own avatar and Neytiri suddenly starts liking him tho , be fr 💀 (I love Spider sm he’s a goofy little sky person)

Something I hope happens with Quaritch’s plot in future movies
I hope it’s revealed that they have multiple avatars made for each marine and when he goes back to the base and tells them what happened, no one is particularly bothered by all the deaths and just animates a new avatar with the same memories
And it becomes this Groundhog Day situation where the marines keep coming back in the same mental place as when Quaritch first woke up with them and he’s the only one who remembers what happened. That he gives the same speech but a little more awkwardly and they laugh at the same places, they say similar things to the first time around, and when they die they get brought back again and it keeps happening
And Quaritch sees his own avatar backups and a scientist makes a joke that if he dies they can just bring back a new one like booting up a video game save, and he gets mad and says they’re not just data they’re people, and it gets awkward because no one there sees the marine avatars as people, just expendable cannon fodder, and it parallels how actual people in the military are sold on the idea of saving lives when really they’re just bodies for people above them to throw at problems and they don’t care if they die
Maybe they start bringing rich civilians to Pandora who are part of the money making side of things and they treat the avatars as being less than them and he gets pissed about it. Maybe some rich kid says he’ll pay for them to make him an avatar and says he wants to get an ikran like Quaritch the same way they’d ask for a new car and he gets pissed with how hard he worked to get one and they’re wanting him to go out and sedate a bunch and bring them back for the rich kids to bond with then ignore when they get bored
Maybe they start littering and leaving trash to pile up like on earth and he comments on it and they say if they use up this one they’ll just find another planet, and he gets mad at the fact that he died to get people there and had his brain put in a body that could only live there and they’re already talking about him and the planet as expendable and nothing that he did being worth much to them
And that at some point he gets Jake captured and for some reason can’t or won’t kill him yet and starts asking questions about Spider when he was little and wanting to learn more about him, and even is grateful to him for raising Spider and taking care of him
And I hope eventually he stands up against the humans and the corporal asks if he’s going to be a traitor to humanity in a parallel to how he said that to Jake and he sides with the Na’vi
I just think, for me, them using Quaritch to follow the anti-military idea of how they’re brainwashed into thinking they’re saving people, when really they’re just dispensable to the people above them and there to further corporate agendas, and that he has more in common with the people he was told are his enemies than with the ones he works for, would be one of the more interesting things they could do with his character

A lot of people think the plot of the new Avatar is overdone or we've seen it all before. But it's important to remember that I as an indigenous person have never seen our story told like this. I've never gotten to see such absolute beauty and pride in our cultures on a big multi million dollar screen like this.
These messages of loss, pain and senseless violence are something that never gets properly talked about. The plot of this movie isn't some completely new reinvented thing. And that's okay it doesn't need to be.
