Some positivity in these turbulent AI times

*This does not minimize the crisis at hand, but is aimed at easing any anxieties.

With every social media selling our data to AI companies now, there is very little way to avoid being scraped. The sad thing is many of us still NEED social media to advertise ourselves and get seen by clients. I can't help but feeling that we as artists are not at risk of losing our livelihoods, here is why:

Just because your data is available does not mean that AI companies will/want to use it. Your work may never end up being scraped at all.

The possibility of someone who uses AI art prompts can replace you (if your work is scraped) is very unlikely. Art Directors and clients HAVE to work with people, the person using AI art cannot back up what a machine made. Their final product for a client will never be substantial since AI prompts cannot be consistent with use and edits requested will be impossible.

AI creators will NEVER be able to make a move unless us artists make a move first. They will always be behind in the industry.

AI creators lack the fundamental skills of art and therefore cannot detect when something looks off in a composition. Many professional artists like me get hired repeatedly for a reason! WE as artists know what we're doing.

The art community is close-knit and can fund itself. Look at furry commissions, Patreon, art conventions, Hollywood. Real art will always be able to make money and find an audience because it's how we communicate as a species.

AI creators lack the passion and ambition to make a career out of AI prompts. Not that they couldn't start drawing at any time, but these tend to be the people who don't enjoy creating art to begin with.

There is no story or personal experience that can be shared about AI prompts so paying customers will lose interest quickly.

Art is needed to help advance society along, history says so. To do that, companies will need to hire artists (music, architecture, photography, design, etc). The best way for us artists to keep fighting for our voice to be heard right now is staying visible. Do not hide or give in! That is what they want. Continue posting online and/or in person and sharing your art with the world. It takes a community and we need you!

They are already selling data to midjourney, and it's very likely your work is already being used to train their models because you have to OPT OUT of this, not opt in. Very scummy of them to roll this out unannounced.

Lin Chen ?? 👀👀👀 (for the wip title game)

Lin Chen! This was actually about Jingyan accidentally seeing a candid portrait of Su Manor with Lin Chen careening after Feiliu and Mei Changsu laughing at them, post-reveal, and realizing what Mei Changsu/Lin Shu had been hiding from him.

Jingyan enters the garden to absolute chaos. Little Fei Liu is careening from tree to tree, and someone in white robes and a jianghu hairstyle is careening after him.

It’s the most chaotic Jingyan has ever seen prim, proper Su Manor. Sitting near the ledge is Mei Changsu. Mei Changsu -- xiao-Shu. Fei Liu darts behind him. The man in white follows, but xiao-Shu holds out an arm, blocking him. “Don’t bully our little Fei Liu, please.”

There’s laughter in his voice, and fondness. Jingyan’s heart squeezes in his chest. It sounds like a man who loves the people around him. It sounds warm.

The man in white pulls out a fan, shakes it at Fei Liu. “This rotten scamp ate my oranges. And here you are standing up for him!”

Behind xiao-Shu, Fei Liu sticks out a tongue.

“Enough, enough,” says xiao-Shu, indulgence permeating his every word. “Fei Liu must have been hungry. Weren’t you? Go find Auntie Ji, she’ll give you some snacks.”

Fei Liu scurries off, and the man in white says, “Amazing. You’re as bad as him.”

“The way I see it, you deserved to have your oranges eaten. Who asked you to flaunt them at every—”

“Changsu,” the jianghu man says, “you have a guest.”

What's Nirvana in Fire?

I AM GLAD YOU ASKED, FRIEND.Nirvana in Fire is a Chinese period wuxia drama, which has FULLY C O N S U M E D ME.  Which was a bit surprising to me, I’m generally more of a passive fan of dramas when the mood strikes me, very few have gotten me to be super actively fannish, but this one impressed me all the way around.  Everything about it was incredible–the acting is top-notch, the costumes and scenery and sets are stunning, the people are beautiful, and the plot is phenomenal.  By the mid-point of the drama I was watching four episodes a day because I just could not quit.The basic premise:  13 years ago, the Lin family led an army of 70,000 soldiers to fight off an enemy country and were victorious.  They were weakened by this fight, so when the rest of the Imperial army came along and said they were traitors colluding with the Crown Prince to betray the Emperor, they were slaughtered.  Except the son of General Lin survived–Lin Shu, but he was poisoned by a combination of fantastical elements, which ended up with the cure completely reforming his body, so his entire face and body looked different, as well as he was weak and frail and sickly now.But he still had his monster level genius and, boy, was he going to come for revenge.  The story is about him taking on a new name, coming to the capital, pretending to befriend the Imperial family, all the while fucking them over because they fucked over his family.  There is one person that he doesn’t hate in that family, the seventh Prince (Jingyan), who was loyal to the Lin family, who still believes in them, who doesn’t have any power because he can’t let go of what happened 13 years ago and it’s his white hot rage button.  Lin Shu (who was best friends with Jingyan, they grew up together) decides, instead, to support Jingyan for Emperor and the series is about clearing out the corruption, getting vengeance for the Lin family and their army, trying to clear their name and bring out the truth of what really happened.Lots of identity porn and almost reveals and feelings about how nobody knows who he really is and he loves some of them and hates others and he’s so furious at what happened to his family, especially considering the Lin family was very close to the Imperial family, Lin Shu’s mother was the Emperor’s sister, making all the princes his cousins, making the Emperor his uncle, and an incredible political game that is SO SATISFYING to watch play out.The characters are all incredible, the motivations for everyone are complex, very few people are true monsters, even when they’re awful people they’re incredibly fascinating to watch.  But the good people are so good-hearted and noble, you will come to love them.  And everything is so, so, so pretty.YOU CAN WATCH IT HERE.
