One small change for the show I really liked was in episode 8:

In the books Lan turns down Nynaeve’s proposal due to his doomed fight against the Shadow and his unwillingness to marry her only to make her a widow.

In the show, Nynaeve is the one to let him go, by giving him a way to follow Moiraine*. I love this for showing how much she gets the importance of his bond with Moiraine (as much as she might wish it weren’t so and despite his protests that the Aes Sedai doesn’t own him) and how much he needs to follow her. I also like that she gets more agency over the decision—Lan isn’t deciding for her, she’s respecting what’s important to him in letting him go.

I also can buy the “we can’t be together” bit better because he is running off fully expecting to die that day. So “I’ll hate the man you choose because he is not me” is less “I’ll be over here hopelessly pining for you” and more “you’ll wind up with someone else because I’m about to die and I hate that.”

I think it will also work better next season when he (presumably) gives her his ring. In the books it follows fairly shortly on the heels of him refusing to be in a relationship, so “send this to me, or a message marked with it, and I will come to you without delay” is just confusing. In the show he assumes he’s running off to die, so while he’s not anticipating being able to be with her now, it’ll be more of a natural progression to giving the ring in the show (I assume he will go off with Moiraine and she will go to the tower, so they will be separated quickly in season 2).

“I will hate the man you choose” gets a lot of attention from fans, but I truly love that next lines got screen time too:

“You are as beautiful as a sunrise. As fierce as a warrior. You are a lioness, Wisdom.”

Yeah, that’s some good romance right there ❤️

*I read a joking fan theory that Nynaeve was able to track Moiraine because her hair was falling out (due to stress, of course), and that this was something Lan could potentially overlook. I’ve adopted it as my own head-canon and otherwise have decided to suspend disbelief about this otherwise head-scratching idea that Nynaeve could track Moiraine better than Lan.
