not saying anything new here but i really think alan alda's flamboyance was the absolute key to hawkeye and m*a*s*h ageing better than you'd expect. e.g. jokes that emasculate frank in order to mock him aren't exactly ideal but when they're being delivered by an even less masculine protagonist it really softens the potential implications... ditto with hawkeye's treatment of women, which does fall victim to 70s writing sometimes, but again it's so much more tolerable and less threatening when the man's form of flirtation is begging to be stepped on by every nurse he sees

good and bad news. good news is i have found a TV episode where a very young alan alda plays an insufferable beat poet. bad news is this poem is almost 2 minutes long and involves the phrase 'slob snob' multiple times
