Do you have any information about your artistic process online anywhere? This most recent arc has been an absolute visual delight and I'd love to learn more about how Swan Boy is created and what tools you use to bring the comic to life.
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying it. I don't think I've ever posted about my creative process. tbh the answer is probably pretty boring but I'm happy to share.
In terms of my actual process, the boring answer is that I just draw constantly. I do it when I'm not in the mood and I'm pretty unafraid to draw some awful looking dogshit. Longtime fans of my work will probably not be surprised to hear this. I find it really helpful to always keep a few relatively unimportant or menial tasks on my to-do list because then it helps me feel like I'm goofing off when I draw. For most of my life drawing was something I did when I was supposed to be doing something else, and for better or worse "goofing off" has become the way I feel most creative. Everybody's got their own method, though. I'm suspicious of any one-size-fits-all advice for stuff like this. My wife works completely differently, for example. She sets time aside and goes hard in a window with a defined timeframe. The cliche I have found to be frustratingly true though is that creativity is a muscle, not an innate "born with it" skill. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. If you're even just taking a walk and listening to music and imagining something once a day you're way WAY ahead of the pack.
For Swan Boy strips, I do very little planning. I tend to write and draw as I go. I have sort of a vague outline of the strip in my head (the idea I'm getting at, the things they're going to say) but if I script it out too much I'm usually sick of it by the time I start making it. I prefer to let the characters surprise me a little. For example, whenever I sit down to write Rona she's a little more mischievous than I think she'll be and the more hatefully and specifically I write Noel the more sympathetic I feel for him. Even Swan Boy has a weird sort of low key goodness to him that only arose over time. I go back and read those old ones and he's a NASTY FREAK. When I'm doing a comic sometimes I won't realize I'm making one until I'm about a fifth of the way into it. A lot of the time I'll start with a drawing of one of the characters and then expand out from that. Sometimes that becomes a strip, sometimes it becomes a single drawing of Swan Boy in the Criterion closet. I like doing stand-alone but I'm always surprised by how much the strip isn't a Nancy style gag-strip, even if that's how I tend to think of myself as a writer. I've been surprised how many arcs occur spontaneously. I like it. I also like writing in arcs because it pushes me out of my comfort zone of "characters standing around talking about CKY" and into a place of "okay, if that's what just happened, what's the funniest next thing that could happen?" The strip has a loose enough sense of reality that I feel comfortable bailing or leaning on the fourth wall to help myself out of any jams I might write myself into, but I try to do that stuff sparingly. I can usually tell the difference between when people are leaning on the fourth wall because they think it's fun and when they're doing it as a crutch. Bit of a pet peeve, to tell you the truth. This arc has been fun because I've been pushing myself to try staging and formatting I wouldn't normally go for. It's been cool to see how the strip is still the strip even when I'm aping One Piece.
In terms of technical specs, I do everything in Procreate on the iPad. My go to brush for almost all of Swan Boy's run was the Ink Bleed pen that comes pre-downladed but I've recently switched to the RSCO Broken Micron pen which is a little bit cleaner and lets me experiment with scale much easier without things getting muddy. Both pens are really forgiving and let you have a lot of control over line weight, which are sort of my big two when it comes to what I want from a pen.
Hope this was helpful and didn't just feel like me jerking off. I charge top dollar for me jerking off, and the idea that I would give that away for free... it's too awful to even consider.
