A Black Lady-Nerd
2K posts
As the title suggests I am a nerd of the African American woman variety. My "nerdiness" is vast and varied from Doctor Who to Broadway musicals. Wandering the many fandoms, of which I am a proud member, I noticed a lack of representation for us lady -nerds of a darker shade. This blog is for us, but I definitely don't discriminate everyone's welcome!

Also in the extended interview Jensen talks about the SPN conventions and how they’ve actually grown in popularity even though the shows been off for 5yrs. He says how much he loves doing them and seeing the fan response.

I would love to rewatch Our Flag Means Death but I just can’t bring myself to do it. It hurts too much to know it’s not coming back. 😔

The first queer Black man to play the Doctor, a generational once in a lifetime casting, representing Black fans especially queer Black fans across the diaspora to be written out like that for his favourite blonde from 2005 is one of the foulest things Russell T Davies has done.

It finally happened…🥹
Tumblr media
One of the main reasons I started this blog 13yrs ago was my love of Dr. Martha Jones on Doctor Who. It was the character of Martha that actually got me into the show. The first thing I ever saw from the show was a clip of her running from Dr. Lazarus in 3x06 “The Lazarus Experiment.”
Freema was the first Black woman I saw, since queen Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura, to have such a prominent and important role in a sci-fi series. And seeing her be part of the action, holding her own, and often saving the day was so empowering.
I made numerous posts analyzing her character and endlessly defending both Martha AND Freema from fandom hate. This blog was (and still is) my way of giving her the respect she deserved when it seemed so many weren’t. Sentiments have definitely become more positive since then, but after years on Martha defense seeing the love for Freema at the convention today warmed my heart. And I truly hope she felt how much she’s appreciated.
I’ve remained a fan of hers ever since those Doctor Who days, and to have this woman I’ve admired for so long look me in my eyes, call me gorgeous (I died 😅💀), and thank me?! Just...wow. 🥹
It was an absolute dream come true.

I’m realizing that Nandor’s underground superhero lair is just an upgraded version of his man cave idea from season 4 🤔

One detail I did love from the finale was that Guillermo lived off the documentary crew’s craft service table.
I did wonder how he fed himself especially when he had no money.

Looking at these predictions I made last year…oh how naive I was. How hopeful and naive…🤦🏾‍♀️
WWDITS Final Season Predictions:
- Final battle between Simon the Devious & Laszlo for the cursed witch skin hat
- Colin & Evie get married
- Baron and The Sire get married
- Nadja’s ghost/Nadja doll finally departs
- The Guide is officially in charge of the vampiric council
- Seanie becomes Laszlo and Nadja’s familiar
- The Djinn comes back/Nandor uses his extra wishes
- Nandor & Guillermo finally discuss their feelings
- Nandor & Guillermo actually get to travel together
- The vampires eat/kill the film crew once the film is done (they don’t like the final cut)

The Guillermo Issue…
In some ways I’m disappointed with the finale and in others I’m not.
I appreciated the attempt to do something unique with the Choose Your Own Adventure-style hypnosis endings. I also appreciated the meta moments in the episode and the cute way they were able to do callbacks (ex. Jackie Daytona). I thought it was interesting they revealed this wasn’t their first documentary (shout out the Maysles brothers) but…that’s where it started to irk me a bit.
I knew the writers weren’t going to have the vampires change and grow too much; I was in the camp that keeping them dumb wasn’t a bad thing, but then they showed that early documentary footage.
To see that they were literally just repeating their days and events practically word for word with little difference surprised me because it neglected a very important aspect - Guillermo. They didn’t have Guillermo before. The addition of his presence in the house should’ve changed something about them even slightly.
Again, I didn’t expect them to change a great deal. I knew these dumb vampires were going to stay dumb, and that was good with me, but for them to not have changed AT ALL despite the influence of Guillermo’s clearly important presence in their lives?? That didn’t line up for me.
Also, even though we’ve established Guillermo’s not a familiar anymore, or even their official bodyguard, but rather a third option *cough* friend *cough* he was oddly relegated to his original role. The vampires acknowledged his feelings but still just wanted him to entertain them with a little dance. He helped prep Nandor for coffin. He called him Master…I guess it could show that like the vampires, Guillermo doesn’t change much either, but that feels…off.
He has changed. We’ve seen him change the MOST out of anyone! Yes, he knows now that he’ll never really fit in with the human world, and I knew he wouldn’t really leave the vampires, but seeing him descend with Nandor in that coffin elevator to a possible life of fighting crime still felt like a regression. Was it silly and ridiculous? Yes. But still a regression.
So, all this to say I’m still juggling how I feel about the finale. I didn’t love it, but I didn’t hate it. Like Nandor and Guillermo’s elevator coffin, I have yet to land on anything certain.

I was so worried it was going to end with Guillermo sitting there sad and dejected in the hallway.
