Watching my toddler figure out how to language is fascinating. Yesterday we were stumped when he kept insisting there was a “Lego winner” behind his bookshelf - it turned out to be a little Lego trophy cup. Not knowing the word for “trophy”, he’d extrapolated a word for “thing you can win”. And then, just now, he held up his empty milk container and said, “Mummy? It’s not rubbish. It’s allowed to be a bottle.” - meaning, effectively, “I want this. Don’t throw it away.” But to an adult ear, there’s something quite lovely about “it’s allowed to be a bottle,” as if we’re acknowledging that the object is entitled to keep its title even in the absence of the original function.

Chapter One:
For the Rodriguez sisters there were only a handful of times in which they got along. The girls were each only two years apart and so spent nearly all of their youth growing right beside each other. Low income gave them very little room to be apart while attitudes gave them very little chance to be around others. For a long while they were all they had in the world and when Miliana turned eighteen all Marley had in the world was Johnny and when Johnny found Miz Marley became all Marley had in the world. The plague, the vaccines, the side effects brought the three sisters crashing together again to create a Safe Haven for Insomniacs all around the world. For all their fighting they still agreed that no one in world could be trusted more than the girl they had grown up with.
The Rodriguez sisters looked nothing alike.
Miliana was the oldest of the three at twenty-six years old. She was also the tallest of the three with dark hair that she dyed silver. Her eyes were a stunning hazel that shifted more to green, as she got older. Her complexion was the fairest and so they called her Dolly. She hated the name and so it was rarely used.
Johnny was the middle sister. Of the three she was the shortest and the thickest with the kindest heart. She had the darkest features with the longest black hair that went down like silk. Her skin was a sweet cocoa while her eyes were large, black abysses.
MarleyCat as the youngest was the most difficult and owner of the largest attitude. Her complexion went somewhere between her two older sisters but other features were far different. Marley’s hair was a thick length of brown curls while her eyes were huge amber things. Because of a childhood in sports she was the most athletic and so was tasked with all the physical business. It was one of the reasons that got her the nickname she loved.
It was these three bickering girls that put together Wonderland. The three together realized their side effects, realized where it had come from, realized the falseness of the plague and the fact that they were others out there like them—others that would soon need a home. Johnny was the unofficial leader but in reality the Wonderland was a self-sustaining land that worked with many leaders. The three sisters were the heart of the Safe Haven though; Johnny was just the easiest to put the blame on.
Yet…in the morning she was nowhere to be found.

If I could offer a young person advice about anything it would be do NOT make life decisions based on your boyfriend or girlfriend. Girls especially. Do NOT stay close to home for him, do not skip opportunities to travel or study abroad, do not pick a safe college to be with him. Expand your horizons. Broaden your own life. He is not the world.

Have you ever thought about how in the Fellowship of the Ring...
In the film’s prologue, Galadriel narrates the forging of the Great Rings. But there’s a really cool hidden message in how the shots are set up… The shots of the elves only show them looking at their rings, nothing else…
Tumblr media
The shots of the dwarves only show them looking at their rings, nothing else…
Tumblr media
But when we get to the nine rings given to men “who above all else desire power”….the men don’t look at their rings. They look straight into the camera.
Tumblr media
And while other shots are composed to make you look at the magic rings,  everything in this shot is designed to make sure you look back into the eyes of the man in the center.  Why?
Because these men are looking at you, the audience: because you are one of them. It’s a reminder that you are also a member of the race of men, and before you call The Nine weak-willed and evil you must remember that you are just as fallible and could be corrupted by power just as they were…that their flaws are only a dark reflection of your own flaws, and the flaws common to all of mankind

Does anyone else with anxiety find themselves constantly googling the definition of different words? Even if I know the definition of the word, I still google it before I use it in conversation just encase I was wrong so I don’t look stupid. Is that just me?
