An Angel Without Wings

Characters: Janus, C!Thomas, Logan (though only for a little bit) and again, a brief mention of Roman and Remus

Summary: Janus was always using petnames for his fellow Sides and his Centre, flirtatious gay Disney villain that he was, but one nickname in particular had always confused Thomas. So, one day, he asked his Deceit why he was so fond of it.

“Oh honey,” said the snake-like Side. “Believe me, you have no idea how long that took me to think of- be grateful I even took time out of my incredibly packed schedule to try and come up with it.”

Thomas laughed brightly at the remark that came from his Deceit. “Well, I’m glad ya did! Thank you so much for helping out with the Patreon, Jan, it really means a lot.” Janus smiled a coy smile and bowed slightly.

“The pleasure is all mine, though I am just doing what I can,” he said, coming up from his bow as the two heard a loud crash come from what seemed to be the living room but could only be the one in the Mindscape considering they were the only two people in Thomas’. Then the sound of Remus cackling as he was no doubt being chased by Roman. Janus, forever suffering, sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Well, duty calls I’m afraid. Do try to look after yourself and relax, won’t you dear? You’ve been working hard and the unexpected need for productivity gives me the worst headaches, honestly- “

Another loud crash. “Those two, I swear to Hades…” Janus muttered. “As I was saying, look after yourself- I will be checking in on you. Adieu, mon ange,” he bid goodbye with a flourish, sinking out.

Thomas waved him goodbye but was left incredibly confused. That nickname was certainly… new.

The next morning, Thomas decided to pay a visit to his Sides after breakfast (a nutritious helping of Crofters on toast), just to check in with them- especially after the apparent fiasco from the day before. He got comfy on the couch and laid back, closing his eyes, and sunk into the Mindscape (well, mentally at least).

He opened his eyes to the living room in chaos.

Furniture was knocked over, glitter was all over the place, tinsel and clothes were strung around everywhere, there were several multicoloured stains on the walls- and he absolutely did not want to find out what they were in the slightest. Suddenly he heard talking come from the stairs as two people came down, both clearly exasperated.

“Janus, I hope you do realise this will take all morning to clean up to a satisfactory state and that I will require your assistance,” came a curt voice he recognised as a very annoyed Logan.

“I’m well aware, Logan, though I’m not looking forward to it. I just can’t believe we still need to put those two into timeout if we want them to behave for a little while, if even that. Honestly, the glitter is going to take ages to remove, how can those two be so childi- “ complained Janus vehemently, suddenly cutting himself as he saw Thomas standing in the midst of the chaos, who gave a sheepish smile and a small wave.

“Uh, hi?”

“Thomas, darling, good morning- so sorry for the mess, you know what the twins are like, come here will you- the kitchen isn’t as much of a wreck, please- do sit down,” greeted Janus, suddenly all smiles as he brought Thomas to the kitchen out of (potential) harm’s way, hand on his back.

“Do… I even want to ask?” Thomas asked hesitantly in reference to the state of the living room.

“Absolutely not,” came the joint response from both the logical and deceitful Sides. That said enough. “Did you eat, dear?” Janus suddenly asked looking down at him with mild concern.

“He did; a nutritious breakfast Thomas, I highly approve,” Logan answered for him, smiling.

“Aw, thanks Logan- I figured you’d appreciate it!” came Thomas’ reply.

“Well, to what do we owe the pleasure, mon ange? You must have had a reason for your visit, considering the time of day, was there anything you needed?” asked Janus. There it was again, that petname.

“Oh! No, no- I just wanted to check in with you guys, see if you were okay after- well, you know. It looks like you’ve got it under control here though…?” he trailed off uncertainly, remembering the two’s complaints. Logan reassured him that they would in fact be fine, and that he didn’t need to worry, advising him to rest considering all his hard work from the day prior. Janus naturally seconded that statement. Thomas decided to take them up on their advice and sunk out- resolving to just chill and watch some cartoons for a bit…

But not before he found out what Janus had been calling him.

As he opened his eyes once more and sat up, he wondered what Janus could have said. It was definitely French, so either he’d have to bust out those 10th grade French skills or work with the wonders of Google Translate, definitely being more inclined towards the latter.

He grabbed his phone and decided to use the voice feature with French to English and repeated the phrase exactly as Janus had said it- his French may be rusty, but his impersonation skills definitely weren’t. According to the translator, Janus had been calling him his angel.

Huh.

A week went by, and Thomas was still thinking about the new nickname for him that Janus seemed to be so fond of, puzzling over it as he did the dishes.

Things like ‘sweetie’ or ‘honey’ or ‘darling’ made sense, that was just Janus being dramatic and gay, but angel? Again, it could just be chalked up to Janus being the way he was, but it was the nickname he used the most out of all of them. It must’ve had some weight to it. But… why that of all things? Angels were heavenly and perfect, Thomas wasn’t. And Janus knew that. He knew about every imperfection that Thomas was afraid of, had hidden away- so why call him an angel? It just didn’t sit right with Thomas- he had to ask about it.

As he dried up and put the final plates away, he worked up the courage to summon Janus and ask him about it… but only after doing some editing on the couch. He couldn’t ask straight away, he knew that- it was such a silly thing to summon him up for- but the curiosity was eating away at him, so he gave himself some time to form a way to ask him about it.

The hours went by, and Thomas still hadn’t summoned Janus, despite having finished editing ages ago. At this point he was just doom-scrolling on Twitter (an infinitely bad decision), convincing himself that he was just stalling for time, in complete denial.

Which, naturally, summoned his Denial.

“Thomas, sweetheart, don’t you think it’d be best for you to stop scrolling? You’ve been staring at your screen for hours now, you know that isn’t healthy for you- or should I get Logan?” he half-jokingly asked. Thomas startled, not realising he had come up until he spoke.

“Oh- jeez, Janus- hey! No- uh, you don’t need to get Logan, you’re right I should probably stop. Um… Janus? Can… can I ask you a question? It might be a little silly but- “ Thomas started, before he was cut off by a raise of Janus’ gloved hand.

“Whatever you intend to ask me, I can tell it means something to you, and if it means something to you then it isn’t silly, darling.” Thomas swallowed, looking down. Why was he so nervous?

“Right! Right… just, um… y’know how you always call me and the others petnames?”

“Yes?”

“Why do you… why do you call me angel? Something about it doesn’t… sit right with me. It’s not that I don’t like it or anything, I actually think it’s really sweet- it’s just… I’m… no angel. I’m- I’m not perfect or like, heavenly, so why do you call me that? It’s the nickname you use most for me, so I’m assuming it means something or the other, so what- “ Thomas asked, once again cut off by Janus, but this time he had put his laptop to the side and was sitting next to him without him having realised. He had now placed his fingers under Thomas’ chin, turning his head towards him and smiling at him with a softness that took his Centre’s breath away.

“Darling, I know full well that you aren’t perfect. I myself am a manifestation of that. But when I call you angel… I don’t mean that you’re perfect. If I may use one of my many religious references, angels aren’t deemed as perfect, only God is- angels aren’t perfect solely because they don’t have a freewill, Thomas,” Janus started, softly.

Thomas blinked. “Lucifer?”

A realisation came onto Janus’ face, and he laughed, clarifying: “My apologies, my dear- I should’ve clarified which religion I was referencing. From an Islamic viewpoint, angels aren’t perfect because of their lack of freewill.”

“Oh,” Thomas replied, face slightly red from embarrassment.

“No worries honey, I don’t blame you for assuming- I do love my religious metaphors pertaining to Catholicism,” Janus reassured him, chuckling a little. Thomas hummed in response.

“But as I was saying,” he continued, again speaking softly and taking Thomas’ hands in his own, “Angels aren’t perfect, only God is, because of the lack of freewill angels have. But angels are undoubtedly good, no? Even though they have no control over their actions, they’re still good. Flawed, but good. That’s how I think of you. Because, Thomas, you have a freewill. And you use that freewill to be the best person that you can be, and I believe, from the bottom of my heart, that you are a good person.” Janus moved to cup Thomas’ cheek. “Yes, you make mistakes, but that’s just what makes you human. A beautifully moral, beautifully kind, beautifully imperfect, a beautifully angelic human.”

Janus stood in front of an overwhelmed Thomas at his final words, bent down- still cupping his cheek- and pressed his forehead against his Centre’s, smiling ever so gently.

Thomas had the sudden urge to lean into Janus but was beaten to it as Janus’ cupped hand gently stroked the side of his face and grasped his chin, the serpentine Side placing the softest of kisses atop his forehead.

“I do hope that cleared things up for you, sweetheart,” he whispered as he pulled away, then standing up. Thomas gave him a weak nod, starstruck. Janus stepped away.

“Well, I’m afraid that I’m needed elsewhere, so I really must be going,” Janus said as though nothing had happened. “Do remember to relax, will you? You’ve worked hard. Adieu… my angel,” he practically purred, sinking out with a bow.

Thomas gave a weak wave, still stunned and cheeks red. “Y-yeah, will do… thanks Jan.”

I like to imagine that not long after the two realise fully just how gay that actually was and start gay panicking- which makes Janus just start freaking out and going "WHY DID YOU KISS HIM?!?! YOU IDIOT, WHY WOULD YOU- W H A T -" and Thomas just starts going "Oh goddamnit I shouldn't have made him hot, why did I make him hot? That was the worst decision I've ever made oh my GOD why is he so smooth oh jeez- AHHHHHHHHHHHH-"

HOW do u color hair so well? It’s v pretty when u make it!!!

Awww, thank you!!! It originated from a Gacha tutorial I watched a while back, but I added my own flair to it, so the general basis is using these layers:

For ref: Setting of layer (what it’s needed for) - what I put in the layer

Add (extra flair)- Sparkles

Add (brightening)- A smaller stroke of the same colour than the lower layer where it needs to be highlighted

Screen (highlights)- A stroke of the same colour the way light would hit it

Multiply (shadows)- Same colour, but following the direction the hair would go in strands

-Occasionally: Normal (easier blending)- Hair dye colours- 

Normal (base colour)- The colour of the hair within the line art
