Me and my boyfriend are working our way through the Great Ace Attorney and I have been putting off drawing any of the characters, until now.

and the universe said I love you

He is nine years old and alone in the world when he finds her. 

He has to fight through zombie hoards to get to her, to where she’s lying in the dust in the shattered remains of a building. A stuffed animal, fabric faded with time and the elements, but still recognizable as resembling a cat. Scar picks her up and takes her back to his bunker, and believes she might be the only soft thing left in the world. 

and the universe said you have played the game well

She is not real, made of cloth and button eyes, but Scar loves her like she is. He calls her Jellie — named because of the jelly stain he’d accidentally bestowed upon her — and they go on grand adventures. They survive. He carries her in his backpack wherever he goes, and talks to her like she can hear. He hugs her at night, and when he’s scared, and when he’s lonely. 

and the universe said everything you need is within you

She’s not real, but he wants her to be. More than anything, he wishes she was real. He wishes on every shooting star he sees, he begs with the desperate hope of a child to have a friend. He has never loved anything before, but he loves her. She’s the reason he knows he’s capable of it, even if she’s not really alive.

and the universe said you are stronger than you know

And then, suddenly, she is. 

Later, he will know that his vex magic had done it. He will learn that there had been enough stubborn aching in his chest that his magic had taken it upon itself to act on it. He will know that he loved her into existence. 

and the universe said you are the daylight

But that’s later, and when he wakes up at age eleven to the sound of purring and the sensation of whiskers on his face, all he thinks is that it’s a miracle. All he thinks is that he is finally not alone. 

From then on, she’s there. 

She’s there years later, when the hoards get the best of him, and she’s there in the world after that.

and the universe said you are the night

She’s there when he meets Cub, when Scar realizes what he is. 

and the universe said the darkness you fight is within you

She’s there when he joins Hermitcraft, chasing butterflies while Scar gathers resources. 

She’s there when he is elected mayor, laying in the sun in his office, leaving inky pawprints on his paperwork.

and the universe said the light you seek is within you

She’s there as Scar builds forests, and mountains, and trees. She’s there as he builds Swaggons, and giant drills, and amusement parks. She’s there as Scar builds his friendships, as Scar builds a family he’d never thought he could have with the hermits.

and the universe said you are not alone

She is there when the moon falls from the sky, and she’s there with them in the void when they escape it. 

She is there as Scar builds Scarland, and makes her the mascot. She is there when Scar builds the happiest place on Hermitcraft and themes it after her, because she makes him happy. 

and the universe said you are not separate from every other thing

But she was made with magic, and even magic has a limit. When it’s time to move on to the next world, Jellie stays behind. She is sleeping on a bench in Scarland, basking in the sun, whiskers twitching as she dreams, and that is where she will stay. 

and the universe said you are the universe tasting itself, talking to itself, reading its own code

When Scar leaves, he floats in the space between worlds and cries, and hears voices. There are always voices, between worlds. The same ones they hear in the end, after the dragon is defeated. He’s never heard them quite as clearly as he does now.

[ She was very happy. ] one of the voices says, comforting, and Scar startles, looking around. [ You made her happy. ]

The phantom feeling of fur brushes against his hand. 

“Did she know?” Scar asks, voice cracking. “Did she know I loved her?”

[ She was born knowing it. ] another voice says. [ She was born because you loved her. ]

and the universe said i love you, because you are love.

When Scar reaches the next world, she’s not there, and now when he sees shooting stars, all he wishes for is that wherever she is, it is warm, and she is dreaming.
