spoilers for the latest episode :( if they won't show eddie's reaction, then i will
Evan Buckley wasn’t the one to call him.
It wasn’t Chimney, not Hen, not Ravi either. It actually wasn’t anyone that was in their strange little patchwork of a family that they built for themselves. It wasn’t anyone from the 118, or even from dispatch. He knows why now, even if he was hurt in the moment– you don’t call when your world is ending. No one picks up a phone when they are too focused on keeping their own heart beating.
Instead. It was Taylor Kelly.
Of all people. It was Taylor. Someone who hasn’t been in their lives for years now, not really, not anything beyond a face on the television playing in the background. Taylor, whose number was only still in Eddie’s phone because Buck’s one had died once and used his, at the time, girlfriend’s phone to send a message.
Eddie had meant to delete the number. He almost didn’t pick up.
The screen lit the car with her name, uninvited, and for a moment he stared at it as if she would come off the screen and bite him. One hand left the steering wheel and hovered over the red circle, it would be so easy to decline, but it didn’t. She wouldn’t call him to chit-chat. Taylor Kelly didn’t do idle conversation. Especially not with him.
He swiped the answer. “Taylor Kel–”
“Stop what you’re doing.”
It wasn’t her usual cut-dry sharpness. It was still present of course, but alongside it there was something different. Her voice was strained, pulled too tight around the edges. It’s the voice used when you have to bring bad news. It stopped him cold, parked on the side of a near-empty road like the world had already started slowing down in anticipation.
“Bobby died. Thought you should know before the news gets a hold of it.” And by news, she means herself.
Eddie laughed.
He laughed, because it was ridiculous. Because Bobby couldn’t die. That wasn’t how the world worked. Bobby was a fixed point in the world. Bobby dying was less likely than the sun burning out, or the ocean drying up. Bobby couldn’t die, he would outlive them all, maybe die at an ironic age of one hundred and eighteen. Then the laugh caught on something in his throat and turned into a half-choke, half-sob that he bit back on before it could become a sound. Before Taylor could hear.
“What ? Actually died ? How ? When ? Are the others– What about Buck ? Is Buck ?”
There was noise on her end, if he was in a clearer mind he would attempt to listen in to get all the information he could. Instead it just became a bundle of voices that didn’t seem familiar. None of it grounding.
“They’re being told now,” she said and… they are all being told and Taylor took it upon herself to tell him. “I don’t know what happened exactly. I’m here to cover what we know. But– yeah, it’s confirmed. The captain of the 118 is gone.” Gone.
Bobby’s not injured, not in another coma, he isn’t retired or in surgery, or even missing. He is gone.
Eddie should thank her. If she didn’t tell him, who knows how long he would be unaware of his world falling apart, more than it already was. But still. He couldn’t help but think, it shouldn’t have been her. It should’ve been someone who knew Bobby. Someone who had earned the right to say his name in death.
It should’ve been Buck, even through sobs and cracked voices. It should’ve been Chim or Hen even if they weren’t used to the news themselves. Hell, it should’ve been a worked at dispatch that overlapped with the 118 often. It– It shouldn’t even be news.
Eddie swallowed against the sudden ache in his chest. It felt like something was splintering under his ribs. “Thanks,” he said after however much time in silence. He couldn’t bring himself to mean it though. “I’ll– I need to– Chris– I’m gonna– Can you– Just keep me updated ?” He stammered out but didn’t wait for a response.
He hung up, he didn’t think he could handle the sympathy in her voice, because contrary to what Eddie felt, Taylor does have feelings. He hung up and then he hit his steering wheel. Fists came down to the dashboard again and again and again. Then he just sat there, staring at the passenger seat as if it would help anything. He didn’t cry.
It wasn’t that he didn’t want to. It was just– it’s always impractical, especially right now. He had to drive. He had to pick up his son. He had to keep it together because someone had to.
He needs to drive to tell Christopher, and then they need to get a plane to the others. They need. They need. They need.
They need Bobby Nash back. No matter how hopeless the task is.
So he called the highschool and the receptionist answered with a practiced, cheerful voice that almost had him hanging up. Instead, he said that Christopher is being picked up early, and that he would be missing a few days due to a family death. She kindly doesn’t mention the way that Eddie choked up through the last word.
He hung up and drove in silence. The world continued on, and no one else in Texas could feel the empty space that Bobby used to fill. He drove and let the grief sit beside him like a passenger with no face, but in the shape of a single captain.

bobby isnt dead, he isnt but IF he is, im not sad or disapointed at the goodbye, mostly because it leaves a bit for each of the characters to continue their arcs (athena in a house alone, a house they decided on TOGETHER ; buck and losing a father figure ; hen maybe getting pushed to be a doctor, feeling guilty for not noticing his symptoms or smt ; ravi having a final conversation with him, and being the one to tell karen ; chimney being saved instead ; eddie not being there, and realising that he can't be on the sideline again)
and even though his own could've continued, it's not like he died before a good point; esp since he SAID that he wants to live, going from someone who was suicidal and alone to someone surrounded by family and wanting to live
but it's fine cause he isn't dead !! magic blood remember, jesusbobby
