It's one of the many ways you're different from Dr. Lauren Eames.

ancient humans were also just some guy, if you got a baby from 60,000 BC and raised him in the 21st century he’d just be another teen boy named logan who tech decks off your arm

What's your opinion on the advice of touching things with your tongue to determine if it's bone or rock?
as much as i love the lick the bone jokes, they are peak archaeological humour, i dont have a great opinion of it
does it WORK? yes. would i DO it? no. for various reasons
1) historic sites in australia are at a maximum 200 years. they are full of asbestos and lead and arsenic and all sorts of things that you do not want to put in your mouth.
on a related note a lecturer once told me that asbestos is also identifiable by licking. But that for obvious reasons we should not do that
2) licking the bone messes up carbon dating. You want something that is datable as uncontaminated as possible. smothering a piece of bone with saliva contaminates it. obviously.
this is really not something you want to risk in australia because acidic soil is the norm and bone and organic materials dont tend to survive very well. viva la as much dating material as we can possibly use
3) it might be HUMAN. this kind of relates back to the whole limited organic material preservation thing. sometimes it is kind of hard to tell if something is human bone in australia, because its usually quite degraded, and also you would not BELIEVE how much kangaroo and human skeletons look alike.
never lick a bone if it might be human. thats not good ethics, or good manners, and descendant communities generally do not approve of you licking their ancestors. although they have been known to appreciate the lick the bones jokes.
4) literally any other way works just as well? we were always taught that if in doubt, as a last resort, after having asked someone else, putting a drop of water on your finger and touching the bone/not-bone works JUST as well. and is 100x safer. I'm admittedly not sure how water interacts with carbon dating contamination though. but it is definitely safer and less likely to bring descendant communities down on your head for licking burials.
tldr; use water dont lick burials always send me the lick the bone jokes theyre hilarious

30 Day Bones Challenge
Day 17- Favorite Quote
Too many, I cannot choose. One of my favorites though:
“Two plus two equals four. I put sugar in my coffee and it tastes sweet. The sun comes up because the world turns. These things are beautiful to me. There are mysteries I will never understand, but everywhere I look I see proof that for every effect there is a corresponding cause. Even if I can’t see it. I find that reassuring.”
-Dr. Temperance Brennan, The Devil in the Details. 2x14.

Every time I see the plants in the Jeffersonian on Bones, I think it’s cannabis…and they’re just like doing science…in their grow-house. Every time.
