Three different quotes found in three different papers said by three different people. All three describe Mustafa Mattan who was shot dead by an unknown assailant. Mustafa had gone to answer his door when he was shot straight through the door before he could even put his hands on the doorknob. A lot of Muslims are talking about this now and making dua for him alhemdulillah. I’d also like to talk about the way antiblackness impacts these narratives when a young Somali is killed. Our community time and time again has had the victimhood of our dead questioned. We know how quickly assumptions are made about criminal history so in most interviews with someone who knew the young man they will explicitly point out that he was a not a criminal. Its not a coincidence its because otherwise that’s what people assume and justice for our lost becomes that much harder to realize
In honor of Valentine’s Day, all week ELIXHER will be celebrating our love — our love of self and our love of other women of color who are trans, queer, and cis. We joined forces with dynamic trans community leaders of color and grassroots groups to profile how beautiful and powerful love looks for 10 trans women of color. Share this:
Helsinki-born photographer Osma Harvilahti is absolutely killing it with his studies in colour, composition and visual abstraction. His images are aestheticised so far to the point that reality takes on an almost sculptural feel.
Osma’s photographs seem familiar, almost as though we have already seen or have taken mental screen shots of these images of every day life - clutter in a lounge room, clothes on a washing line, a plate of fruit. It’s this perfect balance between aesthetic and reality that he has found an almost comforting place for the viewer.
Enjoy more of Osma’s work on his Tumblr and Instagram.
