Sri Lanka’s upcoming new mega-polis structure plan project has open doors for many fields. Architectures, interior designers, engineers, labor so on… the more Sri Lanka start new projects the more people get employed. The more people get employed the more the country’s economy balances.
Well talking about interior designers…
Currently there are so many doors opening in Sri Lanka for designers because of these upcoming airport terminal, port city, hotels along galle face, malls, towers and many more infra structures…

Hold on !!! Oh!! Another Lotus design ??
well this the new terminal 2 of Bandaranayake International Airport of Sri Lanka. The key architectural design is the “lotus flower”. The terminal we have now can handle only about 6.5 million people but 8.5 million people use it. Therefore,the new terminal can handle 20 million people in the future. projects include a second runway to support the Airbus A380,a further eight passenger gates, a domestic terminal, a five-story car-park, and a five-star hotel neighboring the airport.Thumbs up to the SL government for this cuz we all needed a better air port & this decision they have taken is a good one!!!

I was curious to know why Sri Lankan is so into Lotus since ancient days.From king Parakumba to the present president most our architecture based on the lotus flower is really common. Nelum pokuna(Lotus bath) in polonaruwa where king parakumba used to bathe, nelum(lotus) pokuna in colombo which was opened few years ago and now the upcoming Nelum tower( Lotus Tower) & the Lotus Mall. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist cultural country and the lotus flower symbolizes purity, clean and honest.it is a fusion of reality and ideal.as well as the perfect combination of the past and future.
Ok! The lotus is the inspiration of the upcoming TV tower/Lotus tower symbolizing the flourishing development in Sri Lanka.This tower is the tallest in South Asia & the 19th world wide.Its 350m tall.Will be open soon in October 2017!!! this above video will explain you about the Lotus tower!!! As a Sri Lankan i’m proud to see such things coming up targeting tourism.

Lotus Bathe

Up coming Lotus tower!!!

St. Lucia’s Cathedral👼🏻🙇🏻♀️🙏🏻✝️
This cathedral is one of the famous cathedrals in Sri Lanka. Situated in Kotahena / Colombo 13. It’s surrounded with 2 famous leading Catholic schools in the country. My school life was around this cathedral and today I have selected this wonderful building for my vernacular architecture model. I remember all our school special event masses was in this cathedral then I had no idea what architect style it belongs to but I used to admire the gothic patterns, huge arches, and the windows…now as I’ve learned more about architectural styles this beautiful architectural space is a Renaissance and Baroque styled building. It has an influence of St. Peters basilica in Rome. This massive structure is 46m tall & 42m long. The cathedral is pretty easy to find you'll see its massive white dome from a distance when you head down Bonjean road in Kotahena.The cathedral is massive and white, with gothic detail and columns that remind you of ancient Greece. It was built more than two centuries ago by early Oratorian missionaries, probably with Goan or Portuguese.
‼️Please go visit the cathedral before you visit St. Peters basilica‼️

Summary on My Retail Project👩🏻🎨
‼️No more day dreaming‼️
For the first time I experienced the life of an interior designer through this retail project. At times I was acting as if I was a professional designer but then all of sudden I came to my proper senses when I saw my work load. I applied all the knowledge I gathered from every subjects for this project to make it a successful one. At times it was stressful working day and night but i managed it because i enjoyed doing my work cuz it was a new experience for me. All my creations and ideas kept me fueled throughout the day.
-The Day the Brief was given-
The brief for the retail project was given on the 13th of March by our lecturer Kike Macias. This was the biggest project I have done so far and also as a first year interior designer student. I really got panicked when the brief was given. Thousands of questions were running all over my head.
o How to do
o What to do
o From where to start
o What brand am I going to select
o What resources should I use so on …oh! this was really a nightmare
o I also was scared how to do all these deliverables within a short period
o And I had many doubts on the deliverables too.
We were asked to design a space for any retail brand in “Island Craft” Bambalapitya. We were given brands to select on our own. Such as;
· Desigual
· CK
· Prada
· Camper
· G-Star Raw
So as our lecturer was explaining about these brands I decided to select G-star raw.
Reasons why I selected G-Star Raw-
· Because I had never heard about this brand so I was curious to know what it was.
· I felt designing a shop for a brand which is not there in Sri Lanka would be more interesting.
· I like jeans and denim material products so I thought it would be interesting to research on this.
It was just one submission but had many deliverables;
o Dbook with a research pack of 45+ pages,
o Concept 3D model
o Final architectural model
o 2 x A2 printed presentation sheets featuring ;
Rendered plan, section, external elevation, sketches, narrative and so on… Woah!! What a lot! Within two months to submit.
-1st Review-
2 days after the briefing it was our first review I just had one A4 sheet with the brand name and some data I copy pasted from Google with two pictures of the brand logo & other was store in London. I thought had done a good job but when I sat in front my lecturer I realized that it was a 2years old kids work. After a small chit chat with the lecturer I figured what I should have.
Before the 2nd review we had a study tour to many retail shops in Colombo to get an idea what a real retail shop design should look and what we should consider in our design…
Such as;
o A clear strategy of how you bring the street into the retail experience
o Merchandise display and promotion
o Brand - become familiar with the brand and the associated merchandise. What new innovative directions could the brand take?
o Recognizing the customers
o How lighting should be
o Materiality
o Furniture
o Environmental and packaging consideration
-2nd Review-
I remember this was the day I really got nervous because I had to explain about my brand in front of the class but also this was the day I got good feedbacks. My lecturer explained me more about what I should have. More work got added that was the “CONCEPT” of our project. We were asked to think about a concept for the next review. He explained us what a concept is and how a concept should be. A “good research” will lead you to a good concept. Now this was the 2nd time I got panicked and as always it was our one and only senior called Bevan explained how he got his concept and explained it in a simpler way with examples.
On my way home I was thinking now what is my concept? From where should I find it? Until the next review i was researching more on my brand to get a clue & came up with a small concept that is based on stitches of the denim.
-3rd review-
With a doubtful mind i explained my concept to kike. Only thing he said was “research more” you will find something unique in this brand and said you are doing well! I was really confused cuz I felt my concept was really stupid. He gave more work for the next review it was to do the floor plans and think of the layout.
-Vacation Period-
My holidays went well but still I had this confusion on what this concept is and how am I to use it in my design…
The last day before school started I came up with a concept that was after I watched some documentaries on G-star raw. little by little I started realizing the stages of making a denim would be a concept! Ureka Ureka !!! Finally I found my concept Deconstruction, Reconstruction, & Real. This was the happiest moment ever! Because of my joyfulness I started making my concept model it came really well. I was so excited for the next day’s class to explain my concept.
-4th review-
I explained my concept & got good feedbacks on my work. My lecturer said it was a really good concept.
Days past and the last few days before submission were like a brainstorm for me because I had to make sure if I’ve done all the deliverables correctly as it says on the brief.
-Submission day-
Wow!! It was an unforgettable day seen my work completed and lying on the submission room. I put in all my effort and a little bit more. I myself couldn’t believe that I did all this by self. Cuz I was one of the laziest kids who had never done my work completely but yeah this was all because I really loved Interior designing.
This project did not just end; it taught me how to work on time, and how to calm myself down, how to face challenges. Throughout the project I learnt “RESEARCH MORE”. All credits to my lecturer who taught me that!!!

-Designers tools-
Different designers use different tools to create their design. My first design tool kit in school was just a pencil ✏️, pen 🖊, eraser , paint brush 🖌 , crayons 🖍 , paint 🎨 & a piece of paper 📝 but now as a interior designing student many new tools got added 😍. And um in love with all these tools cuz you can do wonderful designs using these.

~HELVETICA~
Helvetica is a documentary film produced by
Gary Hustwit
about typography in general but also more specifically about Helvetica itself. Many typographers and graphic designers express their ideas on Helvetica and how it is functioning now adays. Helvetica also explores the split between modernist and post modernists and why the revolution and evolving of fonts has presented a dispute. For me Helvetica is ”plain and simple”. It has a Fantastic use of white space between characters which it gives a clear & safe font to fall back on. Helvetica’s characters always have horizontal or vertical stroke endings, never slanted or diagonal.More than 40 commercial companies use Helvetica on their company’s logos, advertisements, and marketing materials to capture consumer’s attention all while staying simple.
