By the way, when I say the embargo is illegal I'm not being hyperbolic or melodramatic.
I mean that the UN has ruled it to go against international law. They've been repeatedly ruling it illegal for 29 years as of 2021.

White first-worlders: Cuban food is so bland.
Me: No it's not, it tastes just like Brazilian food, fuck you. And if it were it'd be the US's fault for the illegal embargo.

When my mom was little (she was born in 1962) there were still people alive in our country that had been enslaved as children.
And Canada had Indian Residential Schools until 1997 (when I was 7).
People act like slavery, segregation, and Indian Residential Schools were centuries ago. They weren't. People are still alive who remember this stuff because they lived through it.

As we say in Brazil, água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura -- "with enough persistence, even soft water can pierce hard rock" (literally, "soft water on hard stone strikes so many times that it pierces through").
Baby steps forward is still movement in the right direction. And before you know it, you look back and you've walked much further than you realized.

Hello! I'm doing a research for a project. Can you tell me if there are untranslatable words in portuguese? (I already found the most known as saudade, cafuné, morabeza, desenrascanço) Thank you for your help!
Hmmm... Let me think...
Do mal (literally, "of evil") is kind of untranslatable. It usually gets translated as "evil" or "bad" but it it's not quite right. That'd be more malvado.
To say a character is do mal is more like you're saying "They're in Team Evil" rather than that they are evil. It's nuanced, but there is a difference.
Another one is armar barraco. Like, there’s “pick a fight”, but that’s not really right; armar barraco is less about fighting and more about drama (thought it’s not not about fighting either…).
Can anybody think of any other untranslateable words?

@another-toy-to-break
Thanks, I appreciate it! As we say in Brazil, "living and learning" (meaning "to live is to learn")!
It's pronounced car-nah-vahl, for reference. :)
I'm not surprised you didn't know, considering how many people say it wrong. :P
It absolutely sets my teeth on edge when gringos refer to Carnaval as "Carnival".
It's not a carnival, it's one of the holidays in my culture (which has nothing to do with carnivals), and it has a name.
You don't get to make up another name for it because you feel like it.

I love he name of the map:
Terra de muitos cantos = Land of Many Songs
he snake on the map is likely a reference to the fact that in Brazil he country is also called "Land of Big Snake" (an Indigenous deity)

in light of israel's looming invasion on rafah, south africa implored the icj to call for the protection of palestinians with new preliminary orders. the icj denied this request, insisting that its january orders would be sufficient in ensuring the safety of people residing in rafah.
we have all seen how israel responded to the icj verdict earlier this month. they have all but intensified their attacks on palestinians, their favorite of whom seem to be children. this will end in a bloodbath. palestinians, already malnourished and living in literal tents, will be bombarded, they will be shot, they will be slaughtered. and when i say palestinians, a lot of them are actual toddlers. the videos coming out of this are proof enough.
at this point, it has been made amply clear that palestinians will never experience safety in their own homeland. a lot of the families in gaza are trying to raise funds to get out of it, because there's nowhere left to go.
there is nowhere left to go. if these people don't get the funds necessary to escape, they will die.
it's vital that you go to operation olive branch's spreadsheet, choose a family that resonates with you, and donate as much as you can to their gofundme. every last dollar counts. one dollar could be the difference between life and death for a family. please don't fall victim to the bystander effect. your contribution matters, however little it may be. and whether you're able to donate or not, spread this to as many people as you can. each second we stay silent is a second an entire family is brutally massacred.

This kind of thing is why I always say I'm Indigenous without qualifying how much (the closes I come to i is saying I'm "part Indigenous").
The fact that my great-great-grandfather was Indigenous makes me Indigenous. I refuse to let white people claim I'm somehow less Indigenous than my great-great-grandfather. I'm proud of being Nambikwara.
End blood quantum now
Tumblr media
Blood quantum is how much native blood you have in you and it needs to be a certain threshold to qualify you as a tribal member. Blood quantum varies from tribe to tribe.
It means my mom is a tribal member but because my dad is outside of my tribe... I don't have enough tribal blood to enroll. Neither does my daughter. Our "official" indigeneity ended with me.
My dad is still native tho. Just southern native. Others have two parents enrolled in separate tribes and can't enroll in either one despite being Full native because their parents were mixed with other tribes so they don't have enough blood of Any tribe to qualify.
And to what end are they doing this?
Under the treaties the US govt can lay no claim to native land. So how do they fix that? Get rid of the natives, of course.
And since they can't slaughter us in broad daylight anymore they did the next best thing. What the colonial government has ALWAYS done to us and other poc.
Made up a bunch of arbitrary laws to restrain and limit our power and numbers.
And this can't continue. We are the only race who needs to apply to be part of the community we were born into. The only race who needs to prove our blood.
And that's the thing: it's not even based on blood. Racist scientists defined who was a full-blooded native based on things like shoe size, head circumference, and skin pigment.
Not blood. And besides that it wasn't uncommon for outsiders to become part of a tribe!! You didn't need to be native by blood to be native! Blood quantum has made it IMPOSSIBLE for them to qualify and made it impossible for tribes to practice that long time aspect of our culture.
So please share this post. So many people legitimately think natives are extinct and even less are aware that we do more than just sit around drinking all day. Few people have good feelings about us and within that there are a few who actively help. Please be one of those few.
We need support and allies and for our voices to be heard. Please don't let this post just be me screaming into a void. We need people to know what blood quantum is, how archaic and harmful it is, and to help us spread awareness to people who otherwise would ignore us. Use your privilege.

I always wondered how nonbinary people in Brazil deal with the language gender restriction.
Elu/delu and eli/deli sound so cute! <3
And they work with the typical sounds in the language, which I find a lot of Anglo neopronouns don't (which makes them a bit jarring and intimidating, as they're harder to pronounce). Not that Anglo neopronouns are bad, I respect anyone's pronouns, but I like the Portuguese permutations better.
Latest reblog reminds me of how much it pisses me the fuck off how every queer person alive has to adapt to the usamerican style of queerness lest we get shunned by the community for being too different. I bring this up a lot but bro that time I got death threats for having ele/dele in my bio bc "by using neopronouns I was making a mockery of REAL trans people" when those are literally just my pronouns in my native language, and when I said that I got hit w the "well you're on the internet so speak english" I HATE GRINGOS I HATE GRINGOS I HATE GRINGOS

It must have a similar etymology in Portuguese, because it's gárgula, while the word for gargling is gargarejar.
Note: A gárgula can also be called a carranca. No one's sure where the second word for gargoyle comes from.
