DEJ Scout's sense of justice
"Atticus, that's bad in Maycomb County, hunting out of season was a misdemeanor at law, a capital felony in the eyes of the populace" In this scene, Atticus is explaining to Scout some of the privilidges that the Ewell family has and Scout seems to have a strong opinion on this policy that only applies to them. In her view on justice, there is one wrong and one right she does not know any better since she is just a young, innocent, naive girl. She believes you either obey the law or you don't there is no in between she has no experience therefore her sense of justice is very vague. She cannot see things in the way older people might view them since she does not comprehend the issues that are going on and and why. We can say she has a fresh pair of eyes in the world because she is so gullible to her sorroundings which cause her to view justice the way she does. Her father is aware of the community that she is in which is why he tries his best to teach her life lessons since he knows she is oblivious to the events that take place so he wants to open her mind about the true meaning of justice and when it can be altered.

What to expect in court?
Atticus had warned us telling us not to go to the courthouse but of course we are planning to, we couldn't miss this. I am not sure what to expect in court especially with this case. I am a little nervous since i think Atticus will see us and then we would really be in big trouble. But i am also nervous about what can happen since there will be a crowd of whites and negroes. We all know things can go south when these 2 groups of people get together. Personally, i am hoping that we win this case, not just because Atticus is defending Tom but because i feel that it is right i know he is innocent and i remember what Atticus told me about standing your ground and fighting for what you believe in. I knew the jury was all white, that was Atticus' worry he thinks we definitely will lose but i still have hope that justice will be served.

Atticus is changing
With Aunt Alexandra’s arrival i was noticing a huge change in my father, a side of him i never saw. Alexandra was starting to express her feelings about Calpurnia and it was clear how she felt. One day as we were having breakfast Atticus mentioned something about negroes and Alexandra immediatly told Atticus to not talk like that in front of Calpurnia. I can tell this triggered Atticus he told her that if it can be said in the table it can be said in front of Calpurnia. Atticus was really making it clear that Calpurnia was not going anywhere, no matter what aunt Alexandra thought. But what most surpirsed me was the way Atticus seemed to be reacting to things. Recently Atticus has had an edge to him something we’ve never really seen and i kinda liked it. Maybe Alexandra just triggered a nerve in him, like she did with me, that caused this change. It usually happpened when he spoke with her or when she made these unnecessary stupid comments. I hoped he stayed like this i like this new Atticus.

Dill's back
Lets just say me and Jem got into a huge fight, man i can't stand him these days he wanna act like all them grown folks which always gets me angry. I can't even remember what started the fight but i don't even want to remember. Atticus managed to separate us and we each went to our rooms a "goodnight" was all we heard from each other before closing the door behind us. Not long after as i am walking to my bed, i stepped on something that felt like it was moving i was so frightened i quickly turned on the light and when i did whatever it was just disappeared. As much as i didn't want to i went and softly knocked on Jem's door he thought i was just pranking him but when he got the broom and hit something he knew there was something or someone down there. To our surprise, it was Dill he managed to travel all the way from Meridian with 13 dollars he took from his mom's purse. When we asked Dill the reason he decided to escape his house i couldn't believe what i was hearing, his new dad had him locked up with chains in the basement leaving him to die of hunger and pain. Gosh i thought i had it hard, recently i wanted to run away because of Alexandra's high demands of me being and behaving like a girl but when i heard what Dill was going through, i couldn't imagine Atticus treating us that way and i started to realize maybe some things we do take for granted and don't realize how lucky we are even Dill reminded me of how grateful i should be.

Aunt Alexandra's in town
When heading back from church Jem had told me to take a glance at our porch. When i did i saw aunt Alexandra there sitting in the rocking chair. I thought she probabbly came for a visit since those were rare, but i noticed that none of her cars were parked anywhere. When i asked her about her stay she looked surprise as if she expected us to already know why she is here and for how long. But we didn’t, so she informed us that she will be staying with us “for a while” i already knew what that meant, aunt Alexandra was not leaving anytime soon. The reason behind all of this she said, was that her and Atticus decided that she should come stay with us because we are apparently growing up and we apparently needed a femenine figure around the house. We clearly had Calpurnia so i don’t really know what her use was going to be in the house. But then she said something that really annoyed me she said, and i quote “we decided that it would be best for you to have some femenine influence. It won’t be many years Jean Louise, before you become interested in clothes amd boys-”. Ummm what was that suppose to mean with aunt Alexandra here or 100000 miles away it would still be many many years until i would be interested in boys but i would never ever be interested in clothes. But i didn’t say anything i just kept quiet it wouldn’t have done much anyway. Aunt Alexandra has always been trying to get me to act like a “girl”, like why can’t she just let me be myself. Atticus does not mind in fact he encourages me to be myself and stand my ground no matter what others have to say. But to aunt Alexandra this was not the right way to raise a daughter.

Still in church
The differences between this church and our church were immediatly inevitable. There was no decor no instruments no hymn-books. Only old pine benched and cardboard fans for the overly eager church members to cool off. When Reverend Sykez went behind the pulpit he silenced everyone before announcing that there were 2 guests joining them this evening for their usual church service, of course those were Jem and I. I thought that would provoke an uncomfortable moment but people just gave us approving glances, some of the older ladies even smiled and waved. After this, he went on to talk about some reminders and events, he mentioned the guy Atticus is defending, Tom Robinson and how the collection for these upcoming weeks will be for his family. I quickly reminded Jem that this was the guy but he, as well as Calpurnia, hushed me and i’m glad they did because i was trying to avoid as much humiliation as possible today. We went on to singing a hymn, but there was one problem there were no books so how were we even suppose to know where to sing from. Calpurnia told me to hush and i soon saw why they didn’t need the books they had the songs memorized. Later on i learned something new about these people as well even if they did have the funds for the books it would be no use because none can read. Calpurnia was one of the few folks in there that could actually read and she even taught her eldest, which surprisingly was Zeebo, how to read as well. I soon realized how fortunate we were to have calpurnia with us and i was amazed at her intellectual abilities.

Church with Calpurnia
Atticus went away for 2 weeks because of work related issues leaving Jem and i at Calpurnia’s care. Calpurnia seemed hesistant about letting us go to church by ourselves since last time we were fatherless in church it didn’t turn out so well. So in the end, she asked us to join her in her church i was looking forward to attending Calpurnia’s church and getting a sense of how the negroe churches are, i heard that they are very different from ours but i wss still excited about going. Calpurnia made sure we were in our best attire for the occasion, if Calpurnia knew how to do one thing it was making sure no one said she didn’t taker care of her children. As we arrived at church everyone for the most part made us feel comfortable and welcomed, until this lady they call Lula came and said some nasty things. At that point me and Jem thought that we weren’t wanted there Jem even insisted we leave. But we were told by Zeebo, the garbage collector, to pay no mind to her and that they were glad to have us there. Looking at the crowd i realized that Lula was the only one who felt this way because everyone seemed fine with having us around. With that, we walked in and got ready for the church service.

Soo, Atticus does defend niggers
Yep it's true, what Cecile said, Atticus himself told me that he does defend niggers i still wasn't really sure what he meant but he did tell me not to say the word "nigger" because it is common. well if he thinks it is so common why does he even send me to school where everyone is common everyone is exactly the same they all do what the other person does. so why does he just not send me to school at all, maybe i wouldn't be talking like a common person. But of course Atticus wasn't having that so i just went back to the topic of defending negroes because i still wasn't quite sure why it was such a big deal and why it was so wrong in the community. Atticus told me that all lawyers do defend negroes and that he had to do it, or his conscience would kill him. I was confused as to why he would still do it knowing we were not going to win but he assured me that no matter what this was still our home and we had all the right to stand up to what we believed. This made me feel more assured about dealing with situations like the one with Cecile, and i know many more are coming.

Defends Niggers??
Ge got me so angry, but sooo angry so angry that i felt my anger roaring inside of me. Cecile Jacobs, that’s who. It all started in the schoolyard when he said that my daddy defended “niggers” whatever that’s suppose to mean, i wasn’t quite sure but judging by the way he said it, i knew it was nothing good. My fist wanted to fly right in his face but, i remembered what Atticus had told me about fighting, he had a lot going on so the last thing he needed was his precious little girl to get into a fight in school. So i just took a long breath, in and out and just denied what Cecile said as i walked away. I was still angry so i asked Jem what did he mean by saying that, of course he wouldn’t tell me. He still thinks i’m too little to know about any of this, and i know it bothers him when i ask him these question. But doesn’t he think that if he would tell me i wouldn’t have to ask him all the time, man sometimes i think my brother doesn’t think for himself. Anyway Jem told me to just ask Atticus. like he always does, apparently Atticus just has a smarter way of explaining things to me in a way that i will understand, so i waited for Atticus that evening in hopes of finding out what Cecile meant.

The Blanket
I can still remember the day of the fire in Miss Maudie’s house. I reckon our whole neighborhood must have been there helping out, i was scared to death even though Jem was right by my side. I was freezing all i could do was hold on to Jem for some heat. When it was finally over we went back to the house where all of us realized something quite weird. I had a blanket covering me and i had no idea how it got there, then Jem said that he saw Boo and that he was the one who the the blanket on me. At first i thought it was just one of Jem’s ways to try and scare me, but then i realized how serious he looked. We were both schocked, especially me if only i could have turned around, i would have seen him, the ghost of Maycomb the one and only, Boo Radley. Ughh just the thought of that man creeping up behind me slowly placing the blanket on my back and creeping back to his creepy house and his creepy ways, made my stomach go round and round. Why doesn’t he just come out, its as if he’s scared of us when we should be scared of him, he should just come out and at least let the neighbors know that he means no harm but nooo he has to be all creepy and scary.

First day of School!
First day of schooool!! Boy was i excited, i was finally gonna be considered cool enough for Jem’s standards, since he always says i’m a “little girl”. But nope, now he can’t say any of that because i Jean louise Finch will be going to school alongside him and tagging along with him on every adventure….. yeahh one can only hope, Jem specifically told me to stay away from him while we were in school. He said school was “different” whatever that was suppose to mean. Anyway, i went to my class ignoring Whatever Jem had to say that would ruin my day. My teacher, Ms Caroline, seemed as sweet as a candy drop i thought i wouldn’t have any problems with her but right away we started on the wrong foot. She got all mad at me for knowing how to read and write, for something as little as that for gods sake!! She started fussin about how Atticus should stop teaching me but it was actually Calpurnia, that got me upset, that she automatically thought it was Atticus without even asking first, how rude of her. She was even rude to poor ol’ Walter even thought he got me into trouble. She doesn’t know us around here, she should stay in her place or go back to where ever she came from. But jokes on her! She got in trouble with Ms blount because our class was being too loud or whatever. That bell could not have rang at a better timing!! We all quickly left but as i was leaving i saw Ms caroline bury her head in her arms, almost as if she was going to cry. It made me feel kinda bad i guess, i mean we gotta cut her some slack she is young and new, she’ll get used to things around here eventually.
