The Assane/Ben dynamic is kind of like if Piglet was best friends with Tigger instead of Pooh ("stealing jewelry is what Tiggers do best")
in this analogy Claire and Raoul are Kanga and Roo, Guédira's pedantic ass is Owl, and Belkacem is Rabbit
also tbh Ben went full Eeyore when he was in prison

part 4 news dump (aka, the result of me trawling through the Agences Artistiques actor CV website like a lunatic)
Firstly and most importantly: younger Ben has been re-cast. To be honest I suspected this would happen; I never quite bought into the performance of the actor initially playing him like I bought into younger Assane and younger Claire who were/are both outstanding, and if younger Ben was going to get more scenes I figured they'd re-cast the role. Anyway, the new actor's name is Brice Derouéné. His agency made a post on IG confirming the casting. I'm surprised they weren't told to take it down. Also, he's currently IG mutuals with both Mamadou Haidara and Ludmilla Makowski. Will we finally be getting scenes with young Assane, Claire, and Ben as a trio? Friendly reminder that THIS IS NOT A WANT, IT'S A NEED.
Léa Bonneau (young Juliette) lists P4 on her CV. They kind of telegraphed in the final episode of P3 that the Pellegrinis would be coming back in some way. That said if Juliette ends up being anything other than a villainous or at the very least morally gray figure I will crash out. (Fun fact: she's in the background at Assane's funeral and when the lid is lifted off of the coffin she looks kind of...smug? IDK if it was schadenfreude because Claire was full-on weeping right in front of her or what. Also my theory is that Hubert Pellegrini was behind everything Keller did in P3 and that Mariama is sus as fuck but that's a whole separate post.)
For some reason Monsieur Imbert (the guy who owned the boutique that Assane robbed in the first episode of Part 3) is coming back. In fairness I thought he was kind of funny.
There will be at least four episodes because there's a writer who specifically put on her CV that she worked on episode 4.

Me: #teamclaire for life. Not even in the sense of her ending up with Assane, but rather just being on Team Claire in general. I am here to support that woman even in her most chaotic moments. Your honor we are speaking about a short queen. An elf. She looks like any number of small mammals. She is clever and cunning and can emotionally manipulate you. Her observational skills are lackluster. The less said about her cooking, the better. Her romantic life is a mess but she's not ashamed of it. She tries to help you become a better person while also getting up to all kinds of mischief.

looking back on it this post was brutal lmao
An imaginary conversation between a Lupin screenwriter and an average Tumblr fan
FAN: "Wow, I can't wait to see how Assane and Ben's relationship develops this season! I ship them so hard..." WRITER: "Oh, it'll develop all right. In a way nobody is going to see coming." FAN: "Okay, I'm liking what I'm hearing..." WRITER: "They'll be doing all their usual best-friend capers just like usual. And then..." FAN: "Oh my god, here it comes, here it comes, here it comes!" WRITER: "...Assane betrays Ben to the cops in order to save his mom who he hasn't seen since he was a kid." FAN: *gasps in horror* WRITER: "It's so great, right? Because he needs to make a sacrifice, so what could be better than sacrificing his best friend?" FAN: "I -- I don't see how -- why -- " WRITER: "Clearly you're speechless. That's good, that's what we want." FAN: "But like -- we'll get an intimate exploration of Ben's feelings after going through such a soul-crushing event, right?" WRITER: "No, sorry, it doesn't look like we'll have time. We have a fun friendly-enemy Assane/Guédira storyline to get to, plus Claire discovering that Assane is still alive and falling back in love with him, and then we need to tie up the main plot with Assane's mom...Yeah, no, Ben's just gonna sit in jail for the second half of the season. I think he has, what, four scenes? Oh, I almost forgot to mention, he gets beaten up pretty badly in there" FAN: *wails* WRITER: "We don't see what happened, though. He just has awful scrapes on his face when Claire visits him." FAN: "He -- he gets visited by Claire?" WRITER: "Yeah, she manages to get the truth out of him. You know, that Assane isn't dead. It's actually very heartwarming. But boy, if you thought Ben was already at rock bottom..." FAN: "For the love of god, does Assane visit him? Like, in disguise or something??" WRITER: "Let's see...no, he doesn't. But I do have him sending Ben a steak." FAN: *brain breaking* WRITER: "You know, 'cause prison food is terrible." FAN: "A STEAK??" WRITER: "Whoa, you don't sound too happy." FAN: "DO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT ASSANE'S WAY OF APOLOGIZING FOR BETRAYING HIS BEST FRIEND WHO IS IN LOVE WITH HIM IS TO SEND HIM A FUCKING STEAK?!?!?!?!?!" WRITER: "Uh, who said Ben was in love with Assane? You know this isn't Good Omens, right? Anyway, it's a really good steak. With fries on the side." FAN: "But I need catharsis!! Do you know how devastating all of this is? Where is the heartfelt reunion where Assane falls to his knees and BEGS for forgiveness?" WRITER: "Sorry, emotional reunion scenes are reserved for Claire only. Anyhow I don't see why you're so upset, since Ben gets out of jail at the end of the season." FAN: *sobbing* WRITER: "But there's a twist where we cryptically imply that Ben might have turned against Assane, and that their relationship is irreparably damaged." FAN: *sobbing even louder* WRITER: "Man, I swear to god, you all are so hard to please."

adding to this:
To a degree Claire contributes to the issue here in that IMO she shows this need to always have someone in her life to take care of like a mother-child relationship; in the flashbacks we often see her mothering Assane, trying to help him "grow up" and develop as a person and a partner, giving him advice, being the metaphorical good angel on his shoulder, etc. When they were both young he was receptive to it but as they grew up he became more and more incorrigible, and mainly just relied on her for emotional support.
We don't know exactly when Assane and Claire separated in relation to Raoul's birth but the way I see it Raoul coming along actually helped Claire detach herself from Assane because he was an actual baby she could devote herself to, rather than an extremely unruly and uncontrollable adult (not that Claire ever tried to control him; she's always had the "gentle hand" parenting style whereas what Assane needs is the "getting kicked squarely in the ass by tough love" style).
In contrast in the 2006 flashback we basically see Claire letting herself get squeezed dry trying to make her relationship with Assane work ("I keep telling myself that things will get better", etc). But after Raoul was born she just transferred her caregiving tendencies onto him.
Me: "Haha, the dynamic between Claire and Assane in the 1990s flashbacks feels less like 'boyfriend & girlfriend' and more like 'exceptionally unruly child and his exasperated but affectionate babysitter.'"
Me, minutes later: "Wait...does Assane view Claire as a kind of surrogate mother figure because he lacked a stable female presence in his life after he and his dad moved to Paris? Is that why he acts entitled to her love and affection despite his failure to pull his weight in the relationship on any level whatsoever? Is that also why he gets jealous and upset whenever he suspects she might actually move on from him? Is the whole Coach Alex thing a way for him to test her loyalty to him by presenting her with a fictional persona that he thinks will appeal to her? Does Assane have raging abandonment issues? Is he actually the most emotionally needy character in the entire show?? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON????"
(I'm supposed to do a paper on a relationship in a show that I've seen for an interpersonal communications class, and I chose Assane and Claire, so...yeah.)
