Robyn woke up with a jump from feeling heavy licks and pressure on her torso. In the morning twilight she is able to make out Lily standing over her and feels her continuously shaking her with her paws.
“Wha? Lil?”
With a small bark Lily quickly runs to Emma’s bed and carefully jumps up onto it.
Robyn realises what is happening when she hears Emma’s faint groans and gasps of breath.
Stumbling to her feet, Robyn quickly moves to Emma’s side and sees Lily lying on Emma’s torso.
“Em, hey, you’re okay. You’re safe.” Robyn repeats over and over as she tries to soothe the agitated blonde.
Finally Emma’s husky groans stop and her breathing returns to some normality. Suddenly her eyes shoot open as she jerks awake.
“Hey, hey, you’re okay. You’re in Midvale, you had a nightmare. Everything is okay.” Robyn says softly, trying to reassure a clearly frightened Emma who has tears streaming down her face. “Take a deep breath for me, Em.”
Robyn watches Emma who follows her hand motion of when to breathe and exhale.
“That’s it, you’re doing great.”
A gentle knock on the door makes them look over and J’onn quietly enters.
“Everything okay?”
“Nightmare.” Robyn responds and J’onn nods.
He walks over to Emma’s side and gently tucks a few damp hairs away from Emma’s face. “How bout we take Lily for a walk?” He offers and Emma nods. “I’ll go change and be right back.”
Emma nods again and Robyn helps her up. She watches as Emma goes to sluggishly pick up her clothes from yesterday to change into. Robyn decides to do the same, figuring out she won’t be able to get back to sleep anyway.
Emma gives her a questioning look but Robyn just shrugs and follows her down to the back room where Eliza is filling two flasks with hot liquid.
“Thought you’d like some hot chocolate on your walk.” Eliza smiles lovingly at her daughter and Emma gives her a small smile back. Eliza tightly hugs her daughter, feeling worried at how her eyes aren’t as bright as they should be.
“Ready to go?” J’onn asks, holding out her coat and trainers for her. Emma nods and puts them on, she snorts at how Lily’s tail wags while she waits patiently by the door.
The trio leave and Robyn sits heavily on the stool at the island, resting her head on her fist.
“I’m making myself a coffee, would you like one too?”
Robyn looks tiredly up at the older blonde. “Yes please.”
Eliza begins preparing the drinks and Robyn sighs heavily as she rubs her forehead.
“Are you alright?” Eliza asks the brunette.
“Yea, I’ve just never been good at being woken up quickly.”
“Jeremiah, Emma and Alex’s father, was the same.” Eliza chuckles and places the mug in front of Robyn and sits next to her on the other stool. “One time he got up to feed Emma but I could hear her fussing. I looked over at them and he’d fallen back to sleep with the bottle teat by the side of her mouth. Poor baby couldn’t get to it.”
“He sounds like he was a good man.” Robyn smiles at the older woman.
“He was. He always believed in our girls.” Eliza sips her coffee.
“Must have been hard for you.” Robyn says softly, remembering the story Emma told her of her father. How she holds onto what he was like before he was captured and changed. Seeing the sadness with Eliza’s eyes, Robin decides to change the topic. “Do you have those photos of Em as a baby?”
“Of course!” Eliza chuckles and finds Emma’s photo book. “I always wanted to make sure every milestone was recorded for each of my girls.”
“Your science background is showing.” Robyn jokes as she opens the book, smiling at a toddler Alex hugging Eliza’s swollen stomach.
“I guess it is.” Eliza smiles and they continue looking through the photos. Eliza points at most of them and tells Robyn the story that goes along with it.
The first time Emma walked on her first birthday to try and follow Alex. The pride the family felt at her first word, how she quickly started singing and bouncing to music. On and on the stories go and Robyn smiles at the pride within Eliza’s eyes.
They near the end of the book and Eliza excuses herself to go get changed. Robyn continues to flick through and comes to the photo showing Emma and Lena beaming at the camera.
Robyn taps the surface of the island in time with a song on the radio while she sips her coffee. She stares at the photo and can’t help but feel torn. She knows Emma loves her family but something isn’t sitting right with the Brit.
She hears footsteps upstairs and knows the others will be down soon to begin the next session with Alistair.
She ponders on what else could be said as she feels a lot of the main issues have been aired. She sips her drink and wonders whether she can air her thoughts about a certain raven haired woman.
“Good morning.” Lena says politely while entering the room and walking to the coffee machine.
“Morning.” Robyn utters back coolly, causing Lena to turn and gaze at her.
“You don’t like me do you?”
“No shit Sherlock.” Robyn sasses and Lena’s shoulders deflate when she turns back to the coffee machine. This surprises Robyn to witness this sign of weakness from Lena.
“I completely understand, I would feel the same way if I was in your position.” Lena starts the machine and leans against the kitchen counter.
“Well, let’s hope you never have to be in a position like this.” Robyn growls and taps the cup in her hands. “To see someone you love believe she is worth nothing, that something is so wrong with her that she doesn’t deserve love. That she questions every interaction she has and shuts down when things get too much.”
Lena lowers her head but before she can respond some of the others enter the room.
“Everything okay?” Kara asks and makes a beeline for Lena.
“Yup.” Robyn says, emphasising the end of the word and stands to go over to Lucy who has sat on one of the sofas, patting the cushion next to her for Robyn to sit on.
Kara places a comforting hand on Lena’s shoulder as she looks in concern at Lena’s sad face. “Is she upsetting you?”
Lena shakes her head but Kara wraps her arms around her anyway. They hug and Lena buries her head into Kara’s shoulder.
“Okay everyone, please gather around.” Alistair says, grabbing everyone’s attention.
Kara and Lena break apart, Kara takes her best friend’s hand and leads Lena to the circle of chairs. “Where’s Emma?” Kara asks with a frown as she notices her sister’s absence.
“She’s taken Lily for a walk.” Robyn explains and see’s Alex tense up. “J’onn went with her.” She quickly explains and Alex nods in appreciation for the information.
Movement outside the door catches everyone’s attention and a knock echoes around the room. Kara zips over and opens it.
“Agent Reiff?”
“Good morning, may I come in?”
“Oh, yes, please.” Kara steps aside and the agent enters.
“Director.” Agent Reiff nods at Alex who approaches quickly.
“What’s going on?” Lucy asks as she looks between the two. Alex motions for Reiff to continue.
“We managed to do the clean up before the news crews got there, made the site look as if the storm caused the mudslide rather than a boulder breaking cleanly in half. Agent Vasquez wanted me to show you this.” Reiff pulls out a tablet and holds it out for Alex.
The redhead takes it and swipes through the photos. The Danvers crinkle making an appearance on her face.
“Alex?” Eliza asks in concern.
“How many?”
“We estimate roughly six bottles or more.” Agent Reiff answers quietly, aware how delicate this information may be.
Alex sighs lightly. “And the contents?”
“Alien alcohol.”
“Shit.” Alex mutters. “Okay, thank you. Have agents continue to monitor and patrol the area. We will review when we are back at the DEO.”
Agent Reiff nods and Alex hands back the tablet. She stares ahead for a moment, deep in thought while the agent heads back out of the house.
“Alex?” Sam gets up and heads over to her fiance, clearly seeing that Alex was getting more and more agitated. “You okay?”
Shaking her head Alex marches out of the room and up the stairs.
“She’s going to find the rest of the bottles.” Alistair explains to the group, immediately causing Kara and Sam to run after the redhead.
“But Emma won’t like Alex going through her things.” Lena says with wide eyes and quickly follows them. She rushes up the stairs and hears Kara and Alex arguing.
“-calmly ask her about it!”
“Kara! Let go of me!” Alex snaps as Lena stands in the doorway. She pauses at the sight of the opened suitcase on the floor full of empty bottles and Kara firmly holding onto Alex.
“No! Not until you’ve calmed down.” Kara says determinedly. “We are trying to help her, not shame her or cause more friction.”
Sam steps forward and tenderly moves Alex’s hair out of her eyes. “I understand why you would be upset by this, but Kara is right.”
The stairs creak and Lena’s head spins to see who it is. Emma stares back at Lena in confusion and Lena’s stomach drops.
“She’s here.” Lena calls into the room and the trio freeze. Emma hesitantly approaches her ex, and looks into her room. Her eyes land on the suitcase of bottles and she swallows deeply.
Her chest stings with hurt at witnessing her things being rummaged through and shame immediately burns her cheeks. However, she takes a deep breath and steps into the room, kneels down and zips the suitcase back up.
“Little one?” Kara queries, still holding onto Alex who had remained frozen, her chest still heaving slightly from her outburst.
Emma straightens up and lifts the suitcase by the handle. The unmistakable rattling of empty bottles fills the silence and Emma motions with her head for them to follow her downstairs.
The four women follow the blonde down into the back room where Emma lifts the suitcase onto the coffee table and opens it, revealing it to be packed with mostly empty bottles.
Emma lowers her head and moves to her seat where Lily is already waiting for her. The dog’s tail starts pounding against the sofa, Emma gives her a small smile and sits. Making Lily immediately place her head on her lap and snuggles in. Emma yawns and rubs her eyes, clear fatigue is etched on her face.
“Good morning Emma.” Alistair softly greets her and Emma echoes his welcome back in her mind.
“Would anyone like a drink before we start?” Eliza offers, noticing Emma didn’t have one. “Sweetheart?”
Emma’s tired eyes lift up to hers and she nods.
“She would like an apple juice, please.” Fay answers for Emma and she signs her thanks.
Emma settles back and closes her eyes while she strokes Lily’s fur. She tries to block out the different conversations happening around the room but it’s difficult. Her mind races with shame with what the others must think and how she is going to explain herself.
“Here you go sweetheart.”
Emma opens her eyes and takes the glass of cool apple juice from her mom, nodding her thanks.
She sips the tangy liquid and glances over at J’onn. He nods encouragingly at her and she takes a deep breath in to calm herself.
They mostly walked in silence, enjoying each other’s company but they had also discussed how yesterday had gone and how they were both feeling. They even sensed how today’s session could be harder than the previous one, causing J’onn to vow to support her, whatever happens.
“So, are we all ready?” Alistair draws everyone’s attention to him and they stop their conversations. Alistair waits for them to get settled before talking again. “Before we discuss what is in front of us, Fay and I were both able to detect you were all holding back yesterday. Which is understandable, however, this is a safe place where no judgement should be passed.” He glances around the room and everyone nods before focusing on Emma. “Emma, would you like to explain about the bottles?”
‘Do I have to?’ Her mind asks apprehensively.
“We won’t force you.” Alistair responds and Emma shifts in her seat, feeling uneasy.
‘No, I need to.’ Emma sighs heavily and looks up at the ceiling. Unable to look anyone in the eye. Lily sits up and watches her carefully, her head tilting to the side in concentration. ‘I started drinking after the breakup with Lena. A few here and there at Robyn’s, then when I went to Europe I had a glass with each meal. But it then slowly increased over time and I found myself having more and more. A glass became two, to half a bottle, to a full bottle, to many bottles. I can see now it’s developed into a problem and I’m sorry. I know you guys are being sober but it was like an itch I needed to scratch. It would help numb what I was feeling, so I’d have a bottle or two in the evening after everyone went to bed. I’m sorry.’
Emma scrunches up her eyes and feels Lily nuzzling her nose into her cheek, sensing her distress.
“Sweetheart? Can you please look at us?” Her Mom’s voice breaks, causing Emma to lower her head and slowly open her eyes. But instead of looks of shame or disgust, she sees expressions of compassion and understanding on everyone’s faces.
Emma’s worried eyes focus on Alex’s. She notices how troubled her sister looks. She tilts her head, asking Alex to voice her thoughts.
“Alex?” Fay voices out.
Alex bites her lips before finally talking. “I understand how easy it is to use alcohol as a means to run away from your emotions. But, we can help you overcome it.”
“If you want.” Kara adds quickly but Emma is already nodding.
“I’m also sorry that I searched for the bottles instead of asking you, I just-” Alex’s face is overcome with emotion and she sighs heavily.
‘It’s okay.’ Emma thinks and Alex sniffs.
“Due to the nature of the group we have sponsors within the DEO and meet separately. Lena and Alex suggested it and we all started together.” J’onn reiterates what he explained to her on their walk and Emma nods.
The room is quiet for a moment and Robyn lifts her hand. “Question.”
“Yes Robyn?” Alistair asks.
“How did the whole sobriety thing start? From what Emma told me, you all like your drink.”
Lena fidgets in her seat and plays with her hands. She looks timedly over at Alex, who seems to be silently communicating with her.
“Well, if you must know.” Alex begins telling Robyn and the others exactly what happened.
— — —
It has been over a month since Emma disappeared and Alex is sitting on her sofa in Sam’s apartment and is nursing her fourth whiskey. She stares mournfully at her laptop that is sitting on her coffee table. Despite her Mom telling her not to, Alex keeps trying to hack Emma’s devices to find her sister’s location.
“Where are you?” Alex whispers and takes a sip of her drink. Feeling the burn slide down her throat and course through her system.
The results ping up, making Alex feel a surge of hope. But the hope quickly drops when they show the words: inconclusive.
“Fuck sake.” Alex slurs out and slams the lid of her laptop down. She flops back onto the sofa and downs her drink. Tears prick at her eyes and she presses her lips together. Her gaze falls on the collage of photos on the wall, the beaming smiles of her family and friends. Her eyes land on Lena, pressed up against Emma and beaming at the camera. Alex’s blood starts to boil.
Without much thought Alex angrily stumbles to her feet and grabs her jacket. She hops on the spot to get her boots on but manages in the end. Alex storms from the apartment and punches the call button on the elevator. She taps her foot impatiently on the ride down until the doors slide open, allowing her to stomp outside to hail a cab. In no time she’s in front of Lena’s apartment and she raises her fist to pound on the door.
But the raven haired woman doesn’t answer, making Alex grumble and seethe as she can clearly see the glow of the lights in the apartment.
“Hope, let me in.” Alex orders.
“I do not believe that is wise due to your heightened level of-”
“Hope, please.” Alex snaps and hears the whirl of the locks. The redhead quickly opens the door and searches for her sister’s ex.
Alex can’t help but notice Emma’s things still placed around the apartment. Her paintings, instruments, clothes.
But what she can’t find is Lena in any of the rooms, until she turns to the bedroom and notices the door is closed. Rolling her eyes she storms over but before she slams open the door, she hears Lena sobbing through it.
Her eyebrows furrow tightly. ‘Why is she crying?’
Sighing heavily, Alex knocks on the door and enters. The room is dimly lit and she spots Lena’s head poking above the bed, sitting on the ground next to what was Emmas side.
Alex moves around the bed and makes her presence known by clearing her throat. She can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for the raven haired woman as she jumps and stares wide eyed up at her.
“Alex?” Lena squeaks out, which Alex would have found funny if her emotions weren’t raging inside her.
“You broke her. I told you what would happen if you ever hurt her.” Alex grits out, she watches as Lena’s face crumbles and she lowers her head.
“I know.” Lena sobs out and clutches something close to her chest.
Alex slowly kneels down to face the distraught CEO. She frowns and notices the almost empty bottle of Scotch next to Lena. “What’s wrong? Why are you so upset? You are the one that ended it.”
Lena shakes her head. “I can’t.”
“Can’t what?”
But Lena just keeps shaking her head.
“Lena.” Alex places a hand on Lena’s shoulder, concern seemingly replacing her anger.
Slowly Lena holds her clenched fist out and opens her hand.
Revealing a ring with an emerald diamond.
Alex stares at it, dumbfounded.
“You- you didn’t know?” Lena hiccups as her bloodshot eyes study Alex’s reaction.
Alex shakes her head, unable to speak.
‘When was Emma going to tell me she wanted to propose?’ Her mind races as she tries to pinpoint any conversations she had with her baby sister but comes up blank.
“Where was it?” Alex asks softly.
“In her drawer.”
“Why were you looking?!”
“I was going to start moving her things out and I-” Lena says but her throat closes up with emotion and her head drops forward. More tears pour from her eyes and she clutches at the ring again. “I should die because of what I did.”
“Wow! Hey! No!” Alex says sharply, causing Lena to flinch when she grabs her shoulders. “Lena, look at me.”
Slowly Lena raises her head and stares sorrowfully at Alex.
“Yes I am really angry at you.” Alex grits out and lets out a deep breath. “But you aren’t solely to blame for Emma leaving.”
Lena shakes her head and starts to sob again, despite trying to hold them in.
Alex pulls her friend into a hug and knows there must be more that Lena isn’t saying.
But for now, Alex just holds her.
— — —
“Then Sam and Kara came over and we stayed with Lena that night. In the morning we both had killer hangovers and decided to be sober. Once we told everyone they joined us too.”
Robyn nods and Emma sniffs heavily. She wipes a tear away, hating the thought of how low Lena got.
“But?” Fay prompts Robyn, who does look like she wants to ask another question.
“Why are you all so chummy with Luthor when she broke Emma’s heart?” Robyn glares around the room. “Why not leave her alone after that?”
“Lena.” Fay says quickly and glances over at Emma, who’s looking irritatedly at Robyn. “Her name is Lena.”
Robyn sighs and juts her jaw to the side. “Okay, sorry. I’d like to know why Lena is still a part of your friendship group.”
“She’s one of us.” Kara says softly. “Despite what she did, we forgave her.”
Others in the group nod and a tear slides down Lena’s cheek that she quickly wipes away.
But Robyn’s frown deepens.
“I really wanted to hate her.” Alex admits darkly. “I really wanted to give her a piece of my mind, but then I saw how broken she was and in a worse state than me. In the end, I just couldn't hate her.”
Lena sniffs. “I know I don’t deserve the love and support they gave me.”
Kara reaches out and takes Lena’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze of support.
Emma watches and feels a pang of hurt hit her chest, but she quickly pushes it away.
“Robyn?” Alistair asks. “Do you have something else to say?” He nods, giving her permission to voice the seething thoughts in her mind.
“I still don’t understand.” The brunette says cautiously. “What about Emma?”
The Superfriends frown at the question, some even looking over at the blonde.
“What about her?” Winn asks.
“She’s one of you right?” Robyn shoots back.
“Of course!” Nia responds, shocked that Robyn would even need to ask that.
“So where were you when she needed you?”
“Robyn.” Fay utters as Emma tries to get her attention.
“No, they need to know what you did when you came to mine.” Robyn says fiercely, her fury mounting. “She spent weeks in bed and I had to prompt her to eat, to shower and take care of herself. When I finally got her up and out of the flat her clothes were loose on her.” Robyn seethes, glaring at the group. “And do you know what she communicated to me when I asked how she was? That she was okay if she didn’t think about it. That when she does she feels like she can’t breathe and it’s just too painful.”
Emma slumps forward slightly and rubs a shaved part of her hair to try and self soothe. She understands what Robyn is doing but she still feels awkward. Lily nuzzles into her, keeping pressure on her side and keeping Emma grounded while she continues to listen.
“I spent hours holding her as she cried over you guys, how you treated her and made her feel worthless. I tried to tell her you all loved her, but I’m not so sure.”
“What?!” Kara yells in anger.
“Where were you? When she needed you guys after everything that had happened? The cancelled sister nights, or games night or whatever you all do! You let her down! But then when she left you all rallied around Lena!”
“No we didn’t!” Nia tries to fight back, remembering how she had felt awkward towards Lena for weeks. Unsure where the line was and if they were taking sides but Robyn gives her a scathing look before she can explain that.
“It sure looks that way! I’ve been watching all of you and you treat her like she hasn’t done anything wrong! That she didn’t break Emma’s heart and make her believe it was all an illusion! From where I’m standing it makes it look like you’ve chosen Lena over Emma!”
“Robyn!” Emma’s husky voice barks out but she immediately starts coughing and wheezing. Causing the heated argument to pause while Emma tries to get a hold of her breathing again.
Eliza quickly gets a glass of cool water for her daughter. “Here you go Sweetheart.”
Emma takes it and signs her thanks before taking a few sips. There is a palpable tension in the air and she quickly tries to gather her thoughts. ‘I’m okay.’
“Thank you Robyn for your honesty.” Alistair nods in appreciation and sits up in his chair. “Emma? Would you like to respond?”
Emma nods and taps the glass while she continues to think.
The Superfriends wait anxiously and she can tell her sisters want to jump in.
‘I’m torn.’ Emma takes a deep breath in and closes her eyes. ‘I’m not going to lie and say this hasn’t affected me. I was relieved when Mom told me that Lena was still part of the group. But there was a part of me that felt disappointment. But as Kara said, Lena is one of us and I wouldn’t have expected anything less.’
Emma takes a few more sips and her eyes meet Robyn’s.
‘Thank you for standing up for me, I respect your opinion but it was also slightly unfair with what you said. You knew I ran away and made it impossible for them to find me. I understand how it looks, believe me. But, I also don’t believe it’s as easy as that. I mean, your balcony doors and walls took a huge beating from Kara when she tried to find me.’
Robyn opens her mouth but Emma motions she wasn’t finished.
‘I understand what happened made you dislike Lena. How broken I was and thank you so much for being there for me. But you need to understand how deeply I still feel for her, despite what she did. But I know I need to work on myself too. That I need to repair the bridges I broke-’
“No!” Alex interrupts causing Emma’s eyes to snap to hers. “We all caused the damage. As Alistair said yesterday, we all need to work together.” She glances over at Robyn. “But we all need to be honest with each other too.” Alex hesitates and focuses back on her baby sister. “Like, when I saw you in that music video-”
— — —
The Superfriends were gathered around Kara’s coffee table for a games night. To start with they decided on playing Jenga while they waited for the pizza to arrive.
The tv was on in the background as Alex wanted to watch the news while Lena was currently trying to get a block out, her eyes were focused in concentration.
“You always go for the precarious ones!” Kara laughs.
“That’s what makes it more fun.” Lena says cheekily and grins at her.
But then her heart drops as she looks past Kara and sees Emma on the tv screen.
The tower immediately falls.
“Jenga!” Kara and the others yell.
But Sam grows concerned at her best friend’s pale face. “Lena?” She also turns to look at the tv and immediately unmutes it, causing everyone to gaze at it.
“-believed to be in London, although sources haven’t been able to confirm this. The music video, which shows Emma Danvers lip syncing, is believed to have been filmed in Egypt and was released at midnight UK time. Already we are seeing an outpouring of positive responses and speculation about who the song is about, which, I believe we can all take a guess at. Back to you in the studio.”
Alex quickly takes the remote and logs into YouTube to find the video. It doesn’t take her long due to it already being in the top most viewed videos. She frowns at seeing the name of the song, ‘Perfect Illusion.’
The video starts playing and the sound of synths begin.
The camera zooms in on a blonde’s back as they stare out at the barren, white desert in front of them. Even from behind the Superfriends can tell it’s Emma.
The camera swivels around and focuses on Emma’s stoic expression.
Alex leans forward as she studies her sister’s face. Kara curls into Ben, hating the broken look in her sister’s hazel eyes.
Emma starts lip syncing perfectly to Robyn’s voice, something that is a bit jarring to everyone. To hear another voice timed with Emma’s lips.
Soon different camera angles flash up on the screen showing Emma stomping and kicking up the white sand around her as she continues to lip sync and perform. The sky continues to shift from a brilliant blue to the colours of sunset.
Lena stays frigid as she watches and listens to the lyrics. When the chorus begins, it breaks her heart in two.
‘It wasn’t love, it wasn’t love
It was a Perfect Illusion.’
The raven haired woman tries to hold it together but her eyes fill with unwanted tears and a lump forms in her throat.
When the song reaches the second verse the other members of the band are shown within the circular rig and moments of them playing in the warehouse too.
“I knew she was with them!” Lucy says exasperatedly and digs for her phone in her pocket while continuing to watch.
The second chorus hits and Emma is brokenly staring into the camera with tears streaming down her face. Her passion radiates from the screen.
“Wow.” Ben whispers out, feeling his heart being tugged at the utter pain being portrayed in Emma’s eyes.
Kara sniffs in his arms, wanting to bury her face into them but her eyes are fixed on her sister.
While the chorus proceeds, Emma lip syncs next to the band members, the camera angles tilt, representing her heartbreak and used to make the viewer feel uncomfortable with her.
The song builds and builds until the key change hits. At that exact moment Emma swings the baseball bat, bearing the words ‘FUCK YOU!’ at the camera where it switches to show her hitting a car and denting it like the metal was nothing. Glass explodes around her as Robyn’s vocals increase.
Alex lets out a slow breath as she watches the destruction happening on the screen.
“Super strength?” Brainy asks and Alex nods.
They watch as plates and glasses go flying and crash against the walls. Showing each member giving into their rage.
The final chorus begins and the intensity on the screen almost becomes overwhelming as the scene changes with flashes of light.
But near the end it shifts again and focuses back on Emma by an edge of a cliff. The sapphire sky is a stark contrast against the white of the sand.
As soon as Robyn utters the last words Emma falls heavily and rolls into the sand. Her face is pained as she voicelessly screams and sobs in the barren, white desert.
The music ends and the camera pans upwards towards the sapphire sky, the sound of Emma’s anguished breathing fills the room and the video ends.
The Superfriends don’t move or say anything, but stare at the tv.
The silence is broken as Lena sniffs heavily and lowers her head into her hands. Her tears slip from her eyes and fall from her face. Her curly hair shielding her face from the others.
“Lee.” Sam utters quietly and slides off the sofa to comfort the raven haired woman.
Muffled words sound out from Lena’s hands.
“What was that?”
Lena lowers her hands. “I did that to her.” She chokes out and a sob breaks through. Immediately Sam pulls her into a hug.
“I don’t think it was just aimed at you.” Alex says softly while she continues to stare at the TV. “We need to find her and fast.”
The others nod around her and the notion of a games night and pizza is forgotten as they race to the DEO.
— — —
“Then we searched through footage around London, trying to find a hint of you.” Alex explains, her eyes shining with tears.
‘That’s why you all appeared so quickly?’ Fay voices Emma’s question.
“Yes.” Brainy responds. “We were monitoring every security camera by major attractions.”
“As soon as the bus crashed through the barriers we suited up.” Nia explains and Emma nods.
Her eyes fall on Lena who seems fixated with her hands.
“So, question.” Robyn raises her hand again and glances at Lucy. “If you knew she was with me then-”
“Well, it was more of a hunch and you can’t plant bugs in someone’s home on a hunch.” Lucy shrugs and winks at the singer.
“Noted.” Robyn says softly. “But why not pursue it?”
Lucy swallows and her eyes flick over to Emma’s. “I wanted to. Believe me I wanted to catch the next flight to London, but I knew Emma needed time and I wanted her to come back on her own.”
Emma nods and signs her thanks to her friend.
“And Robyn, are you happy with their explanation about Lena?” Alistair asks and Robyn purses her lips forward.
“I guess. I mean if anything like that happened within my band, and we are as close knit as you guys, then yea. Happy, no, but I understand.”
“Good.” Alistair nods and gives Robyn a warm smile. “Are there any other questions relating to what has been said?” Alistair asks, opening the space to the group.
“I have one.” Kara says quietly and Alistair motions for her to continue. The blonde focuses on Emma, who can tell her sister doesn’t want to ask what is in her mind.
“It is okay.” Emma signs reassuringly.
“Did, I mean, were those words-” Kara says quickly but falters and goes to fiddle with her glasses. However they weren’t there as she had forgotten she hadn’t put them on today, so she ran them through her hair.
‘Did I mean them?’ Emma tilts her head, finishing Kara’s sentence for her.
“Yea.”
The room holds their breath, waiting for Emma’s answer.
‘I did.’
Everyone’s shoulders deflate other than Robyn, Alistair and Fay.
‘But that’s what art is.’ Emma tries to explain. ‘At that moment I was angry, hurt, upset and I needed to express it. The words and melody came quickly and before I knew it the song was there.’ Emma glances over at Robyn who nods, remembering how Emma’s pencil flew across the paper while she wrote the lyrics.
“It came from her heart.” Robyn says softly, focusing everyone’s attention on her. “Music is generally the same notes over and over, but it’s what you have to say that counts. And Emma chose to play out her pain, her feelings and thoughts.”
‘It’s just a moment in time.’ Emma adds.
“But do you still feel the same way?” Kara asks hesitantly and Emma pauses. Her eyes find Lena again, who slowly raises her head to watch Emma’s answer. She freezes when her apprehensive eyes connect with Emma’s.
‘I want to say no, but I’d be lying to you.’
“Which Emma is allowed to feel.” Alistair quickly interjects, feeling the build up of confusion and hurt in the room.
“How can we move forward and help you see we were wrong?” Sam asks while holding Alex’s hand.
Emma shrugs, unsure herself.
“May I offer a few suggestions?” Alistair injects and Emm nods. “You all experienced trauma that day, not just Emma. I believe doing group exercises, your film and game nights will help. Also-” Alistair pauses as he looks between the sisters. “You don’t need to do this right away, but Eliza told me the apartment where the attack happened is still empty. When you three feel ready, it might give you some healing to go back and make peace with what happened.” His eyes focus on Alex in particular who shifts in her seat.
The sisters nod in unison.
The rest of the session goes by quickly and soon the sun has set. They finish and say their goodbyes to the couple, offering for Lily to stay with Emma to help her heal.
“She has taken a great liking to you.” Fay smiles widely after hugging Emma. “See you soon.”
Emma waves goodbye and goes back into the house to eat dinner with her family with Lily staying close by her side.
The atmosphere is relaxed and the group joke and laugh as they eat. Afterwards the group decides to go down to the beach and build a bonfire to enjoy the crystal clear night. They sit and roast marshmallows while drinking rich hot chocolate.
Emma is listening to Winn, Kara, Lena and Brainy debate something sciency that she cannot keep up with their discussion. But enjoys how passionate they are when trying to support their view point. Even if Winn gets overly exasperated to the point Ayla has to pull him back.
Emma grins and takes the last gulp of her drink before getting up.
“You okay?” Nia asks and Emma nods, motioning she is going to the water.
She stands by the water’s edge as it gently laps against the sand and takes a deep breath. Finally feeling like things could, possibly, get back to some normality. Although she still felt apprehensive about what the future could hold and whether things could repeat themselves again.
‘I AM YOUR DOOM!’
Emma frowns slightly at the monstrous voice that plays out in her mind and she remembers her dream from this morning. The same grotesque monster that demolished National City. But this time, it had destroyed her family as well.
Emma shivers at the memory, her sisters covered in blood, eyes fully dilated, staring at nothing. It had felt so real and she can’t help but feel a sense of dread.
“Hey.” Two voices greet her, making Emma jump out of her skin and slip on the sand.
“Wow!” Alex and Kara grab a hold of her to steady her footing.
“You okay?” Kara asks in concern and Emma nods, running a hand through her hair.
“We can go if-” Alex starts to say but Emma firmly shakes her head and pulls her sisters into a group hug.
They tightly hold onto each other and Emma places a kiss on their heads. Still not used to the new height difference.
“I love you.” She whispers, causing both of her sisters to tear up and Alex to lower her head.
“Love you too.” Kara responds back and sucks in her bottom lip. “Can I ask you something?”
Emma nods and Kara steps out of the hug while Alex clings to Emma, who rests her head against Alex’s.
“So, you said you still feel the same way? That it was an illusion?” Kara shuffles on her feet, worried about the answer Emma will give.
Emma takes a deep intake of breath and straightens up, allowing Alex to look at her.
She swallows and feels her throat, wanting to voice her words rather than sign them.
“I still feel- disappointed.” Emma whispers out and coughs. Kara superspeeds to grab a bottle of water and hands it to her. Emma nods her thanks and takes a few sips before continuing. “I needed you both and you weren’t there but you were for Lena.”
“I can see how that looks.” Alex says softly and steps back but keeps ahold of Emma’s hand. Seeing this, Kara takes the other. “I can’t say anything other than I’m sorry.” Alex begins. “You are my sister and you mean the world to me. I would never choose anyone over you and I’m sorry it felt that way.”
Kara nods in agreement. “Yea, I’m sorry.” Kara agrees. “But our love for you has never been an illusion. You’re our sister and we love you no matter what.”
Emma sniffs and her sisters pull her into another hug before they start heading back to the group.
“Oh and Mom wants to know your thoughts about New Years tomorrow.” Alex asks and Emma gazes at her questionaly. “If you wanna go to the party or stay at home.”
“Am I expected?” Emma asks and the sisters share a look, which Emma catches.
“Well the town knows you are here-” Kara begins and Emma nods.
“We can always go for a bit and come home.”
“Good plan.” Alex nods and squeezes her shoulder before they separate. Alex heads for Sam and Ruby roasting marshmallows and Kara goes over to Ben who is joking with Eliza.
Emma approaches Robyn, who hands Emma her new guitar to play. Emma grins and sits on a blanket, she softly strums the guitar while listening to the conversations around her. In time she stares into the fire and her eyes become unfocused and distant as she watches the dancing flame.
“May I sit here?”
A velvet voice says next to her, causing Emma to blink and look up to see Lena standing there with two steaming mugs.
Emma nods and passes the guitar back to Robyn, who gazes at Lena with less animosity than she had done.
Lena kneels down and hands her one of the mugs.
“It always amazes me how beautiful you make music sound.” Lena utters while making herself more comfortable.
Emma gives her a small smile and takes a sip of the hot chocolate. A moan escapes her lips from the velvety taste, making Lena smile and chuckle.
“I agree it’s good.” Lena takes a sip of her own before lowering her mug to her lap. “Can I tell you something?”
Emma nods and sits so she is facing Lena more.
Lena takes in a nervous, deep breath. “I understand your process of writing songs. You write from the depths of your soul and are able to connect with others. But please know, my love for you, it wasn’t an illusion. I just wanted you to know that.”
Emma lowers her head for a moment, unsure how she can respond to that.
Placing her mug on the ground she goes to sign.
“You broke my heart.”
“I know and I will regret it for the rest of my life. If I could go back and change it, I would. But I can’t. All I can do now is try to support you the best way I can. If you’ll let me?”
Emma nods slowly. “Maybe we can rebuild our friendship?” Her eyes fall to Lena's chest, where the ring sits, hidden by the raven haired beauties clothes.
“I’d like that.” Lena gives her a small smile and the pair focus on the fire in front of them. Content to sit in silence while laughter and jokes ring around them.

PSA: Fanfic Readers
Guys, I cannot begin to express how much stuff I plan for a story that ends up not making it into the final fic. It is so much fucking stuff. So please, for the love of god, if you have read one of my fics and you liked it enough to wonder about what the characters were up to in the "deleted scenes", ask me about it. I will tell you. I love talking about these stupid little self-indulgent universes I've created. I can't speak for every author out there, but I know that's my case.
That is all.

Waited for her.

Supercorp x Reader (daughter), Lena Luthor x Reader, Kara Danvers x Reader, Lena Luthor x Kara Danvers.

After the death of winter, when the earth became alive and the rain poured during the night, the sound of crashing waves against the rocks began to drown the voices from the patio, as the slight breeze of the ocean surrounded the beach.
You buried your feet in the sand while the ocean breeze wrinkled your dress. The salty air invaded your tongue as your bloodshot eyes stared blankly at the ocean. From a distance, the debate in your mind was evident as you fought reality in silence, you didn’t want to believe it.
The passing thought of a life-changing event that could come at any time was more than enough to make you crash.
The flowers were supposed to bloom, the nights were supposed to be longer and the slight anticipation of the coming summer. But in the cold afternoon, during late March, everything shifted and changed.
Flower bouquets decorated the living room, as the soft music filled the house. Your hand kept playing with the red sun ring that sat in your right hand, as you stood beside the staircase with an unconscious gaze fixed on nothing.
People came and went with hugs and small nods of sympathy. Your family, the superfriends, Earth 1 superheroes and their families, DEO agents and more. But you waited in silence, waited to wake up, waited for the cheerful barking from the family dog, Krypto, as she landed in the backyard, to see her through the house with a smile. Waited for the scolding for not having socks on due to the cold floor, waited for the scolds of using super powers for chores, waited to be called for family dinner, waited for the long talks about the most uncommon things after work, waited for the last piece fight, waited for the loud laughs because of her favorite movies, waited for the night flights, and the roof talks.
Waiting for your family to tell you it was all a lie, waiting for the hugs, waiting for the ‘good nights’ and ‘I love yous', you waited for her but she never returned.
“I’m sorry for your loss.”
The familiar voice of the neighbor’s kid brought you back to reality. Broody always had a cheerful smile and shiny brown eyes, full of life and energy. And now he stood with a small tucked-in shirt and bloodshot eyes, looking at you with pain and sadness.
With a cough and a small, shy nod, you nervously grasped the end of your sleeves and entered the house. You tried to look everywhere but him, as she placed her keys beside the family picture.
Smiles and laughter were caught in the picture, the beach background radiated summer and the sunkissed tans on all of you confirmed the vacation photo. It looked perfect, even though your hair was sopping wet and out of place, happiness radiated from you. You stood beside your family hugging you, Lena and Kara looking at you as if you were their center of the universe, enjoying one another, totally clueless about what the next year was going to be like.
And that's how you found yourself looking down at the tablet, her old suit up in a display beside her first photo appearance as supergirl, you knew the truth, that was not her.
She would roam around with polos, and colorful shirts, blonde disarrange hair. Red cheeks and a small mark by her eyebrow. Ocean orbs that are always smiling. That’s how she was supposed to be, full of energy and jokes even in the darkest days but not anymore.
There you wondered of a life without her, a life without her laughs, her jokes, her smile. A life where she wasn't there, where the memories of her were all you had, where she didn’t get to walk you down the aisle, a life where she didn’t stand beside you at graduation, and your first day of college. A life where one last time she decides to save the world instead of being with you.
——
The summer after high school graduation was the time when teens made memories and held them close to their hearts for the rest of their lives. The happiness and warmth as they prepared for the biggest change in their lives, college.
You were supposed to work for the first few weeks of summer, before going on your senior trip with your best friend  before coming back home and organizing your things for college before going on the family trip to New York. But plans changed and you isolated yourself.
For you change has never come easy, from changing your favorite clothes as you grew out of them to the disappearance of your jeju. The last few weeks of Senior year had passed in a blink of an eye, one moment you stood beside your grieving family during Spring break, and the next you stood beside them with a cap and gown at graduation without your mom.
You didn't eat, didn't sleep, you didn't shower, you were just there. All around surrounded by painful memories that haunted you. The darkness of your room felt reassuring when everything started to turn until it wasn't the same she knew.
Everything was different, it felt different, it sounded different, it tasted different. There was a silence between the family, an unbreakable pressure each one of them had. And when her common phrase stood on the wall by the family portrait in her unique handwriting.
‘Things need time because time heals’
You couldn’t help but hate her even more. Because how could time heal this?
How could you see life after losing your jeju? how could you understand the meaning of it, how could you see yourself walking down the aisle, how could you not wish for her to be there on your graduation, how could you be able to go to sleep without dreaming of her, how could you keep missing her, how could you keep using your powers without her. How could you keep going when she wasn't there with you?
After long nights of missing her, you found refuge in the smallest things. Coffee and books became your support after your love for science, journalism and superheroes faded away.
Every once in a while, you spend time in the park sitting on a bench, reading a new book with a small cup of coffee.
It was nice. But nice things can only last for so long. You think bitterly.
You tried to distract yourself from the voices in your head, you worked, but even that only lasts so long until you get back home.
The circles under your eyes grow darker, your favorite foods taste rubbery, and drinks become bitter, your pants become a loser, the red son ring stays on, and the kryptonite pills get taken more and your once full life becomes lifeless.
Memories haunt you, as everything becomes a hateful reminder. The food, the couch, the piano, the car, the house, the beach, the dog, the DEO, the tower, the superfriends. The revelation comes out so honest, you just don't try anymore.
The night was quiet, and you could feel each other's exhaustion. Your brunette-haired mom places the foiled dish on the table, The lasagna was warm, the salty smell of cheese and marinara invading the dining room.
You pluck out the fork on the table, before peeling back the foil trying to get a piece. You sit back and stay silent. You can taste the pasta, cheese, tomato, and meat but with every bite, the taste slowly starts to fade away, until it's all mushy and bitter. You hate it.
The empty seat in front of you is a reminder that she wasn't there anymore. It has been like that for a while, you think mournfully, eyes glued to the chair.
“How was work, darling?” Your mom asks you curiously.
Lena had always been a person of tranquility even during the disappearance of Kara, she tried to show no weakness in front of you since after all, you had no one but her, she had to keep it all together, how else was she supposed to be there for you. She was the CEO of one of the biggest science fundations, she had it handled, or so she thought.
“Good,” You murmured, eyes not leaving the plate while you picked at your food.
“That’s good, honey”
As usual, Krypto lay down beside your chair, waiting for you to pet him. While Lena hears the muffled sound of the golden retriever moving to her daughter’s side; she doesn't argue about his presence in the room, unlike before.
Like when you would sneak him food or try to pet him, even at the worst times possible. Or when you would roam around with him in your arms, and gather up an increasing amount of golden hair on your pants. When you would stay with him, instead of going out. When every single inconvenience was let known to the dog and not her friends. When he wasn't another reminder of her.
With that silence took over the dinner. As for you, you stood up to go to the kitchen, with no sign of acknowledgment to Krypto. Lena watched you leave, with bloodshot eyes sighing in defeat.
You werent dumb, you saw it, more like you saw him but it hurt more and more with time. Even on the darkest nights when you needed him the most, you could only see him across the backyard with your jeju playing catch, she could only see him in her hands with a small bowtie and a wide smile on her face. You could only see Kara through Krypto, and you hated her for that. For making you hate your best friend.
You write, write, and write.
You wonder if you'll ever stop. Your therapist said it would help, you don't believe it at first but when the sun circles the earth and the day of your disappearance is back. You're tired but try it, in hopes of something, anything.
In hopes of finding what the itchy feeling on your heart is, in hopes to understand it. Understand how you can find every cloud on a sunny day and hit every traffic light on the road while still deep down wishing she was there. And somehow embrace it, embrace all of the broken pieces of you that stand on the floor.
It has been a year now. You think.
It's almost absurd how you are there standing, breathing, blinking but not living. It didn't feel like living but existing. The same draining routine every day, made you wonder what anything else would feel like.
The pain in your stomach keeps hitting, the weight on your shoulders keeps fatiguing and you can’t fix it, you can’t manage it, you can’t understand why it’s simply not going away.
The bird's tweet, the wind tickling the leaves, and the laughter of the superfriends echoed in the house. Her coffee cup was on the stairs beside you, as you gazed towards the ocean horizon before looking down at the black phone.
Your fingers trembled as you grabbed it, dialing the number you hadn't called in a year. You weren't expecting your call to be answered, but deep down you hoped it would.
Just like you felt the first few months when your eyes trembled to close in tiredness. Because you couldn't handle the thought of going to sleep, because of that miserable second in the morning when you forgot she was gone, and your body wasn't on autopilot anymore.
But when she was met with the pitch of her voice as the voicemail message. Her breath shuttered as her eyes clouded with tears. Your breath hitched at her voice.
“This is Kara Danvers, I’m sorry I couldn't attend your call, please don't leave a message after the tone, just text me like that I might answer faster. And in case I don't see ya! Good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!”
You sniffed and wiped the streams with the back of your hand. “Hey, jeju…”
“I’m sorry, I'm so sorry” You sobbed.
“I'm sorry it has taken me so long to come back to you, I'm sorry for hating you, I'm sorry for not saying goodbye, I'm sorry for everything. But I can't forgive you, I can't.”
“I can't forgive that you left, and now there is a hole in my heart, where you used to be. I just-”
“I love you, and I miss you, I miss you so much.”
You hung up her phone and wiped your tears away. your nose and eyes matched the color of the red of your cheeks, and with a slight tremble in your walk, you twisted the door handle to the house.
Your mom stood from the kitchen aisle and opened her arms. You ran from the door to her mother.
Lena held you tightly almost afraid to let go, swaying back and forth with a hand stroking your hair.
“It’s going to be okay, I promise.” She whispered attentively.
Lena’s emerald green eyes stared right back into the same blue orbs her super had. Kissing your forehead before pulling you into her arms again.
After that night, days appeared longer, the wind blew less, and the ocean was calmer. The house started to feel like home again, the lights became brighter, the paint became happier and the walls became peaceful. Krypto roams around more frequently, Lena works less and you are able to feel more.
Sunrises and Sunsets felt relieving on the beachfront, signaling the end and the start of something. Coffee and tea accompanied her in the early morning and late afternoons when you looked for her at the end of the horizon. Because even when every candle, every prayer, every photo, and memory made you hate her, it didn't make up for the fact that the only thing you had left was a hole in your heart where she used to be.
Two years have gone by since the cold and cloudy day in March when your life changed. When her comparison of a Piano and life finally made sense, it was too late, the suffering had already passed and the good in life was slowly fading back into her life.
It was getting easier, the routine helped, and the writing helped, but it was still exhausting for you. To do it every day.
Because even when your mom’s soft embrace became warmer when sweet words healed your cracked heart, and when others left sympathy, it was only you who could heal yourself, because only you knew where it hurt. The pain was deeper from your heart to your mind leaving scars with heavy pain and darkness that eventually would become a reminder and not a feeling anymore.
“Krypto. Stop!” You yelled when the dog ran through the back door to the beach.
The sunset was down on the blue ocean, and as the breeze of spring moved the sand, you ran down the patio, trying to catch up with the golden retriever.
Krypto jumped up and down as you stood looking at the now orange and yellowish ocean, as the sunset happened. Taking a deep breath you murmured sitting down petting Krypto. Putting the familiar black cup beside them.
“I miss you.”
Trying to not let the emotion take control, you grasped the end of her sleeves glancing at the ocean as the dog didn't hesitate to lay down on your lap.
With your hand through his hair, you knew as the wave crashed against the rocks and the ocean breeze harshly passed through them. That even when she couldn't be there to witness, she knew about the isolation, the hidden pain, the sadness, and the silence. It all ended by reflecting on one thing, You trying to understand your feelings, your world, your family, and yourself.
The familiar presence of Lena was known when she carefully dropped a blanket on your shoulders and sat beside you. Your lip trembled, as you tugged the blanket around yourself, Lena carefully laid a kiss on your forehead before your bloodshot eyes sobbed in grief.
In silence you turned back to your brunette mother, glancing at the green piercing eyes that always brought comfort in hopes of something.
With sympathy and sadness as she saw her daughter in pain, Lena wished to cease your pain, but she could only give the sweet and comforting words that could help you go through it, after all, she was missing part of her heart too.
As the day ended, the only thing that could be heard was the crashing of the waves in the ocean and the small echo of a young girl sobbing because of the loss of her mother.
—-
The night is long and Lena sits in the kitchen. A wine bottle opened up and the glass was full, her computer running through investors numbers and most of the work papers for the foundation. The engineering tab opens where Kara's suit remains unchanged. The brunette sighs as she hears knocking at the front door. She pulls Kara’s sweater down almost covering her shorts and adjusts her glasses before getting up
It couldn't be you, you had gone upstairs to watch a movie trying to lose track of time before going to bed. She thinks.
She walks up with furrowed eyebrows and opens the door hesitantly and it's met with a sight she had wished for so long.
Kara stands there in all her glory, her suit renovated with now gold straps and a small logo in her sleeves almost as if nothing had happened. Almost out of breath, she talks.
“Lena… I can explain”

Alex stares at the screens in the DEO as the alarms blare out and information starts projecting onto it.
“This is the fifth attack this week.” Alex says through gritted teeth.
“And we still don’t know who they are.” Supergirl clenches her fists by her side, feeling her frustration bubbling up.
“Or what they want.” Alex adds and punches the console, trying to think through a plan that could finally reveal the answers they are desperately seeking.
Finally the screens show all the relevant information and Alex springs into action. “Okay, looks like we’ll need three teams, Supergirl if you-”
“Alex, Supergirl, you will sit this one out.” J’onn interrupts, causing Alex’s head to snap towards him, her eyes narrow in annoyance. Supergirl crosses her arms, wanting to help with the new attack. “Vasquez and I can handle this.”
“With all due respect this seems pretty big and-” Supergirl starts to argue back.
“And nothing. We will get to the bottom of these attacks, but right now, you need to go get changed and head to the carnival.” J’onn orders, but the sisters don’t move. “Didn’t I make myself clear?”
“Yes sir, but-”
“No buts.” J’onn firmly commands before turning to the superhero. “And Supergirl. No exceptions for you either.”
“Aye-aye.” Kara gives him a mock salute and follows the stomping Alex to her laboratory to change. Her phone buzzes and her face lights up when she reads the message, her annoyance at being benched seemingly gone.
“And who is that from?” Alex enquiries with a raised eyebrow.
“Ben, he’s just leaving work and will meet us at the entrance.” Kara repeats as she unzips her suit.
Alex smiles at her sister, happy that Kara has found someone worthy of her. She had met Ben at Catco when she’d gone to see Kara about an issue and once Kara had introduced Ben to her, Alex invited the new couple out on a double date. She had smirked at the momentary panic in his eyes after she asked. But he accepted with a warm smile.
When they approached the restaurant Sam had warned Alex to be nice and the redhead had scoffed at the notion she wouldn’t be. Surprisingly Alex found she liked him, partly having expected an element of her would find some fault in him. But after her gentle questioning and a few warning squeezes of her thigh from her girlfriend, they both found he was perfect for Kara. He liked movie musicals, let Kara have a decent bite of his dessert and opened the doors for her like a gentleman.
All in all, Ben had passed Alex’s test with flying colours.
“How's that going? Are you guys official official yet?”
A light blush creeps across Kara’s face and her face morphs into a dopey grin. “Well-”
“Aww.” Alex can’t help but coo.
“What?” Kara blinks.
“Your grin, it’s just nice seeing you smile like that again.”
Kara cups her face. “I know! My cheeks hurt so much! Like they are doing a constant workout!”
“Mine are still sore, so get used to it!” Alex laughs as she zips her black jeans up. “What were you going to say?” The redhead asks while putting her boots on.
“About?”
“You said ‘well’, and then I interrupted you.”
“Oh, yea, that.” Kara slips her dusty pink jumper over her head. “Erm. I actually wanna have this conversation with Emma too. Like together.” She says apprehensively and puts her glasses on and places her hair in a half up, half down hairstyle.
“Okay, sure.” Alex nods and goes to grab her jacket. “Do I need this?” She turns and asks her sister.
“Weather is warmer this evening, so it's probably best to ditch the leather jacket.”
“Yea.” Alex agrees and opens a cupboard door to look through spare clothes she has stored in there and finds a thin, black hoodie. “Ready to go?”
Kara nods and they fly to an alley near the carnival.
As the pair exit the alley they immediately notice paparazzi swarming behind a barrier by the entrance.
“Who tipped them off? I thought this was all done privately?” Kara seethes and feels for her sister.
“I don’t know but Sam just messaged to say everyone has arrived already and has gone through.”
The pair rush towards the entrance and security immediately let them through. They both ignore the photographers screaming their names to answer their questions about Emma.
“There you are!” Sam hollars as they walk through the ticket barriers and towards the group.
Emma is sitting in a wheelchair and communicating with Ruby and her friends. Alex narrows her eyes at the glasses Emma is wearing.
“Sorry, something came up at work.” Alex apologises and kisses her girlfriend’s lips, her eyes still fixed on her baby sister.
Kara smiles at everyone but looks around. “I’ll be right back.” She dials Ben’s number and holds her phone to her ear. “Hey are you nearby?”
“Yea, just trying to get through this crowd.” Ben's voice shouts through the phone, trying to be heard over the screaming fans, causing Kara to pull it away from her ear.
“Okay, I’ll come get you.” Kara ends the call and heads back out to the noisy street. She immediately spots him and security makes an opening for him to slip through.
“Hey babe.” Ben smiles warmly at her, Kara matches his grin and takes his hand, leading him to the entrance. Once inside and out the sight of everyone Ben stops. “Hey.”
Kara turns back around and he tenderly kisses her lips, making Kara swoon and her legs feel like jelly. “Hey.” Kara whispers in a daze.
“You look beautiful.” He reaches around his back and holds out a single red rose. “For you.”
“Aww.” Kara takes the rose and sniffs it. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Ben leans in and kisses her again.
“Hey! You two!” Alex bellows, causing the couple to jump apart. “Quit making out and get over here!”
“Yea, yea.” Kara rolls her eyes affectionately and Ben offers his arm for her to take as they walk to the group.
“I’m nervous.” Ben quietly admits as they get closer.
Kara turns her head to look at him. “Oh don’t be, you survived Alex’s interrogation and Emma is going to love you.” She earnestly says and Ben takes a deep breath.
“Okay.” They approach the group Ben smiles at them all. “Hello everyone.”
Emma can’t help but look him up and down as a small smile graces her lips.
“Hi Ben!” Nia leaps forward and gives him a hug. “It’s so good to see you!”
“You saw me like, an hour ago!” Ben laughs and returns the hug.
Nia shrugs and Brainy steps forward and opens his arms for a hug as well.
“Brainy!” Ben greets him warmly. “How are you?”
“I am well, thank you.”
“How you doing italian stallion?” Winn jokes and also goes for a hug.
“I’m great! Charming as always I see.”
“You bet!”
James shakes his friend’s hand warmly and Lucy goes in for a hug.
“How’d the photo shoot go?” She asks and Emma watches the exchanges with interest.
‘They’ve met him before.’ A sinking feeling settles into her stomach.
“Went really well, despite the divas on set!” Ben answers. “I mean James is the biggest diva of them all.”
“Hey!” James nudges his shoulder into Ben as the group laughs.
“You remember my Mom?” Kara motions to Eliza and Ben holds out his hand.
“Oh don’t be silly Ben!” Eliza laughs and pulls him into a hug. Emma watches as the black haired man seemingly melts into her Mom’s arms. He closes his eyes and breathes in deeply.
She frowns slightly as they pull apart and he rubs his eyes, wiping away tears that had gathered there and swallows his emotions.
“Ms Luthor, a pleasure to see you again.” Ben goes to shake Lena’s hand and the raven haired beauty smiles back.
“Ben, you’ve met me enough times now to know it’s Lena.” She steps forward and shakes his hand.
“Yes, sorry Ms- Lena.”
Emma looks between the two, her head straining as she focuses back on her girlfriend. Lena notices and glances down, giving her a small, knowing smile.
Kara takes Ben’s left hand and beams down at the other blonde. “And this is my little sister, Emma.”
Emma quickly places a smile on her face and turns towards them.
Ben kneels in front of her and holds his hand out, his brown eyes glisten and smile is warm and inviting. “Nice to see you Emma.”
The blonde nods, shaking his hand and returns his smile. She intently studies his face. Feeling familiarity prick at her mind again.
Ben’s smile falters and concern crosses his face. “I was very sorry to hear of the attack. I hope you are feeling better?” Ben enquiries kindly, missing the way Kara’s face turns grave or how Alex shuffles on her feet and Sam wraps an arm around her waist.
But Emma notices, her eyes quickly dart to them before focusing back on him and nods in response.
“This is actually Emma’s first major outing.” Lucy comments and Ben looks up at her in surprise. “Maybe finally get her out of the wheelchair, huh Em?”
Emma nods and Ben blinks, turning to Kara, who quickly morphs her face into a pleasant expression. “And you invited me to join as well?”
“Well, yea.” Kara smiles at him. “I wanted you to finally meet her. Is that okay?”
Ben slowly stands and rubs the back of his neck. “Yea, I’m just- I wouldn’t want to intrude.”
“You aren’t.” Kara takes his hand and smiles. “I want everyone I love to get to know you too.”
“Okay.”
“So, are we going to split up or stick together?” Sam asks, seeing the teenagers getting restless.
“It would be nice to stay together, though I suspect Ruby would like to break away with her friends?” Eliza comments, making Ruby and her friends nod in agreement.
“Seems fair. Rubes, you got your phone on you?” Alex asks and the teenager rolls her eyes.
“Duh.” Ruby quips and pulls her phone out of her pocket.
“Hey! Less of the snark.” Sam raises her eyebrows at her daughter.
“Yes Mom! See you in a bit!” Ruby rushes off with her friend’s, all giggling as they head for the rides.
“Anyone have any preference on what to do first?” Lucy asks the group.
“Food.” Kara shouts and raises her hand, making everyone laugh.
“But won’t you make yourself sick if you eat too much and then go on the rides?” Ben asks and Kara’s eyes widen slightly. “I did that once when I was a kid. Never been able to look at a corn dog the same way since.”
“Yea, no, you’re right.”
“Well, as the kids are over there at the moment, I know Ruby will be horrified if I go over and cramp her style.” Sam jokes.
“Why not the games? See how many prizes we can win?” Alex offers.
“Sounds like an idea!” Nia claps her hands excitedly and peers down at Emma, concern filling her at the glazed look in her eyes. “Would you like that Ems?”
The blonde head snaps up and she nods.
“Alright! Let's divide and conquer.” Lena smiles at the group and starts wheeling Emma over to the long line of stalls. Immediately the game operators start calling to them with big smiles.
“Roll up! Roll up! Have a go at the ring toss!”
“Try your luck at Skee-Ball!”
On and on they called to them and Emma points at the milk bottle toss.
“Do you need help getting up?” Lena asks, mainly for Ben and the game operator’s benefit, knowing Emma can indeed get up herself.
Emma nods and takes her girlfriend’s hand. Squeezing it three times as she does so.
“Here you go ma’am.” The game operator places three balls in front of Emma. “Knock all the bottles over and you’ll win one of these lovely prizes!” They point at the shelf filled to the brim with cuddly toys.
Emma nods and reaches for the first ball.
“You got this Em!” Nia cheers and the blonde looks behind her and gulps. Everyone was watching her.
“We wanna stick together.” Alex shrugs, seeing Emma’s questioning gaze.
“Are you going to join in?” Emma signs, motioning at the three empty spaces and Alex repeats it.
“Okay, I’ll have a go.” Winn steps forward, along with Alex and Brainy.
Emma smiles at them and turns back to the game. Lena moves the wheelchair out of the way and stands next to her.
“Remember what your father taught you.” Eliza reminds her daughters.
Taking a deep breath, Emma puts her feet shoulder width apart, relaxes her shoulders and raises the ball. Looking at the other three who also ready themselves.
“Ready?” The game operator asks and they all nod. “Go!”
Emma takes aim and throws it with all her might.
Time seems to slow as her eyes follow the ball and watch it knock all but one bottle down.
The superfriends cheer and Emma smiles. Winn has missed his, Alex knocks down two of the six and Brainy only manages three. His head is tilted in confusion as he analyses the game.
“If you get this last bottle with this ball, I’ll give ya the choice of any prize!” He yells  encouragingly to Emma.
“Ooo I like the look of the fluffy unicorn!” Nia squeals and Emma turns back to her.
“It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!” Emma signs and Kara mimics the voice from ‘Despicable Me’, immediately picking up the reference and causing everyone to laugh.
Bouncing the ball in her hand, Emma gets ready to throw again. The others follow suit and throw their second balls.
Bottles clang as it falls off the shelf.
“We have a winner!” The game operator yells and holds his hand up to give Emma a high five. The blonde does so and smiles as Kara hugs her from behind, cheering her name. “So! What will it be?”
Emma points at the unicorn and immediately hands it to Nia.
“No, Emma I can’t take it!” Nia yelps, but Emma shoves the big fluffy unicorn into her hands with a smile.
“I bet you can’t do it again.” The game operator smirks. Emma slowly turns around and raises an eyebrow at them.
“Set it up again.” Lena speaks out Emma’s words in her best CEO voice.
And it seems Emma could do it again, but instead she knocks the bottles down in one go. Making the game operator blink in surprise.
“Who else wants to have a go?”  Emma signs as she turns back to her friends.
The night is filled with laughter as the superfriends try out the different games.
Alex, Lucy, James immediately gravitate towards the shooting ones. The real surprise for some of them was when Eliza steps forward and picks the rifle up. Lena looks at Emma shocked as the Danvers matriarch manages to beat them all in the shooting range and chooses the Supergirl lush doll. Emma beams at her Mom and cheers by enthusiastically clapping.
Slowly they start accumulating quite a horde of prizes which were being stored on Emma’s wheelchair. Causing Ben to stick close to the blonde as he worriedly watches over her and making sure she doesn’t stumble.
Emma wins again at Break A Plate and adds a Giraffe teddy to her horde. Already planning on donating her trove to the children’s hospital.
Sam, Winn, James and Ben try the rope ladder next, at one point Emma had to hold onto Lena from voicelessly laughing too much when Winn lets out a high squeal falling off. Sam manages to stay on and Emma can’t help but wonder if she used her powers.
They eventually head over to the rides and scream their heads off, especially with the roller coaster.
“Mom? You coming?” Emma signs cheekily at Eliza.
“No, I’ll be the bag lady for this one sweetheart.” Eliza smiles at her daughter.
Emma smiles and turns to her girlfriend. Lena had been adamant she was not going on any intense rides. But her resolve soon failed her at Emma’s puppy dog eyes and adorable pout.
“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” Lena's voice is strained as the coaster operator secures the restraints over their shoulders. Emma lovingly takes her hand and squeezes three times. “I still love you but why did I let you do this!”
Emma smiles and chuckles as Lena lets out a squeak when the coaster begins to move.
Kara and Alex are sat at the front with Emma and Lena behind.
“Everyone put your hands in the air!” Kara shouts back as the coaster climbs the track.
Emma does and glances over at her girlfriend. Whose knuckles are white from gripping the bar. Concerned Emma reaches over and places her hand over Lena’s. She keeps her hand on Lena’s as the coaster levels out and heads for the drop.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god-” Lena repeats in a shrill voice, her Irish twang breaking through. “OH GOOOOOOOARGH!!!”
Emma voicelessly screams and laughs in fear and exhilaration as the coaster roars around the track. Feeling the thrill of the ride as the wind blows through her hair and her heart pumping loudly in her chest.
Moments later the coaster rolls back into the station and everyone whoops.
“Again! Again!” Kara chants and some of the others join in.
“You guys wanna go around again?” The operator asks and gets a response of cheers.
Emma looks over at Lena to make sure she is okay and the raven haired beauty smiles back at her. “One more time won’t hurt.”
The coaster pulls out of the station again and Lena cheers with the others, taking Emma’s hand as they go around again.
Near the end of their time they finally get food. Emma couldn’t help but smile at how Kara races over to the food stalls, pulling Ben along with her as she excitedly points at the different options.
“Share a bag of doughnuts with me?” Emma signs to Lena.
“Sure.” The raven haired beauty says and they walk hand in hand over to the donut van. “One bag of fresh sugar donuts please.”
Emma watches transfixed as the vendor makes them, breathing in the yummy smells that make her mouth water.
“Where do you want to eat them?” Lena asks as she takes the bag.
Emma looks around and thinks for a moment. “On the ferris wheel.”
“Alright.” Lena takes her hand again and they head over to the ride. Emma becomes aware that Lucy, Alex and Sam follow close behind and gives them a quizzing stare. She stops as her eyes zone in on Alex’s zipped up hoodie.
“Love?” Lena turns to see why Emma has come to a halt.
“I’ve been looking for that hoodie for ages!” Emma signs annoyed at her sister.
“How do you know it’s yours?” Alex crosses her arms automatically at the familiar sisterly exchange.
Emma raises an eyebrow and stomps over to the redhead. She uncrosses Alex’s arms and points to the Axis’ logo on the upper left with Emma’s name below it.
“Well. You must have left it in my lab cause it was there!”
“Yea right!”
“Yea it was! Do you want it back?” Alex shouts and starts to unzip the hoodie.
“Not tonight. Give it back to me after you’ve washed it.” Emma shakes her head and turns back to her girlfriend. “Sisters.” She signs and rolls her eyes.
“I wouldn’t know.”
“Nah, pretty sure one day Alex and Kara will be legally your sisters. Sucks to be you!”
“Well in that case.” Lena laughs as Emma halts again and gives her a pout. “I’d be honoured to have them as my sisters.”
Emma smiles lovingly at her girlfriend and tenderly kisses her. ‘I should have brought the ring.’
“Hello ladies!” The ride operator smiles as they approach and helps them on the ferris wheel.
The tall ride moves slowly and Emma gazes out at the stunning view of National city. Completely spellbound by the twinkling lights.
“Now normally I would recommend something else first, but here.” Lena holds the still warm donut out for Emma.
Emma nods and takes it. Silently moaning as she tastes the sugary goodness.
Lena seemingly agrees as a low moan escapes her lips when she takes a small bite of her own, making Emma beam at her. “This is a once in a while thing!”
Emma leans over and gives her girlfriend a sugar coated kiss on the cheek.
“Emma!” Lena laughs and wipes the sugar off. A small glint appears in her eyes and without warning she grabs Emma’s face and kisses different parts of it. Almost layering her girlfriend’s face in sugar.
Emma voicelessly chuckles and proceeds to rub her face against Lena’s.
“No! Emma!” Lena laughs harder and manages to halt her girlfriend’s movements long enough to capture her lips instead.
A whistle pulls them apart as the carriage reaches ground level before rotating back up again.
The couple smirk at each other and Lena wipes both of their faces with a napkin.
Emma notices Lena opens her mouth a few times but doesn’t speak. Instead taking her hand and rubs her thumb soothingly over her knuckles.
Once the ride was over they head back to the food area and choose some more food to eat. Emma can feel her teeth getting fuzzy after munching down on some cotton candy she couldn’t resist.
However, all too soon it was time for the Superfriends to leave and allow the park to open to the public again. They decide on heading to Al’s Dive Bar before saying goodbye to Ruby and her friend’s as Sam drives them home.
“See ya later babe.” Sam lovingly kisses Alex before leading the hyper teens to her car. Emma swore they must have injected the cotton candy right into their bloodstream with how giggly and hyper they were.
“I’m going to head home too.” Eliza yawns and approaches her daughters. “Not as young as I used to be.”
Emma smiles sadly and hugs her Mom tightly, holding onto her for a while.
“Hey, sweetheart. Are you okay?”
Emma nods and reluctantly pulls away. Allowing the others to say their goodbyes and send her off safely.
The group arrive at the bar and Emma settles into a booth with Nia and Lena while Alex and Kara order their drinks. Although Emma notices them gazing at their phones and putting their heads together to whisper to each other. However, her attention is drawn to Nia as she proudly places the fluffy unicorn on her lap.
Ben, Winn, Brainy and James head to the pool table to have a few games.
Alex and Kara place the drink trays on the table and the redhead hands Emma a pint glass of Pepsi Max. “Do you wanna take those off now?” Alex asks, pointing at the glasses Emma is wearing while she sits at the booth.
Alex watches Emma hesitate and look over at Ben.
“Ah he’ll be fine.” Kara motions with her hand and takes a sip of her drink.
Finally Emma reaches up and pulls the glasses off her face. Trying not to wince at the heavy bass reverberating from the jukebox.
“Why did you wear them?” Alex pointedly asks while drinking her beer.
“We, Doctor Hamilton and I-” Lena starts explaining. “Felt with Emma’s injuries, she may have had to wear them.”
“Which makes sense.” Lucy agrees and quickly changes the subject. “So, Alex, I’ve been meaning to ask abou-”
Emma zones out of the conversation, feeling the pounding in her head worsen. Lena’s arm wraps around her waist and Emma places her hand on Lena’s upper thigh, also lowering her head onto her girlfriend’s shoulder.
She tries to ignore how the room buzzes around her, the outlines fuzzing and exploding in colour.
Eventually she closes her eyes. Unable to take the sensory overload anymore.
“Looks like someone is tired!” A muffled voice jokes and Emma pulls her lips up into a smile. Not wanting to reveal her pain.
She feels Lena gently kiss her head. “Love? Do you want to leave?”
Emma shakes her head and slowly opens her eyes. Her gaze fixes on Kara, who watches her with a frown.
“Are you feeling alright?” Her sister asks in concern.
Emma nods before raising her hands. “I maybe had too much sugar and I’m crashing!”
“Well you did have four of the six donuts, corn dogs, funnel cake, poutine and cotton candy!” Lena lists off. “Also how you managed to try that deep fried butter I will never know.” Lena teases and kisses her head again. Emma flinches slightly but relaxes and closes her eyes, missing the way Lucy narrows hers as she watches the exchange.
“Sounds like a good time to me!” Kara beams and clinks her drink with Nia’s.
“What was it you wanted to talk to us about?” Alex asks Kara.
“Well, I, er, probably more in a private setting and just you and Em. No offense Nia, Lucy.”
“None taken.” Lucy holds up a hand and smiles. Feeling a bit tipsy from her wine and what she drank at the carnival.
“What about Lena?” Nia asks with a tilt of her head
“I-er…”
“She already told me.” Lena says, causing Emma to slowly lift her head up and cracks open an eye, grimacing even in the dim light of the bar.
“Told you what?” Emma signs and looks over at her sister.
Kara looks around and quietly whispers. “It’s something about Ben.”
“Oh yea! I already know about that!” Nia smiles and settles back in her seat.
“You do?” Kara asks, her mouth open in surprise.
“Yea.” Nia shrugs. “You know, with our pasts.”
“But you’d rather talk to us in private?” Alex asks and Kara nods in confirmation. “Well, shall we get going? Looks like Peanut is going to collapse any minute.”
“Yea, let's go to Lena’s.” Kara nods and slides out of the booth.
“And Emma’s.” Lena adds and gets out of the booth to allow Emma to leave.
“And Emma’s, right.” Kara fiddles with her glasses and gives her best friend a closed lip smile.
Emma stands and frowns when Lena sits back down. “You’re not coming?”
“No, I am going to stay here a little longer.”
Emma nods and bends down to kiss Lena’s lips.
The sisters say their goodbyes and Emma hugs Ben.
“Was nice meeting you.” She signs and Kara interprets for her.
“Likewise.” Ben bows his head.
The Danvers make their way out back into the alley. Emma goes to hold onto Kara’s back like she normally does but Alex stops her.
“I think it's best Kara holds you.”
Emma doesn’t argue and allows Kara to swoop her up, actually enjoys the feeling of snuggling into her sister’s neck.
The flight was short and soon they were sitting on the sofa, with Kara twiddling her thumbs.
“Kar, what’s wrong?” Alex asks, concerned by how Kara was acting. “Has Ben hurt you?”
“No! Rao! No!” Kara shouts, making Emma roll her shoulders at the loud sound. “It’s nothing like that.” The superhero tries to reassure them. “Basically, we, er, we, er-”
“You didn’t reveal yourself did you?” Alex’s eyes go wide as she tries to figure out Kara’s hesitancy to talk.
“No! Although I would like to. At some point.” Kara says hopefully.
“I don’t know-”
“Okay but this isn’t what I wanted to talk to you about.” Kara tries to stop that conversation and looks at both of her sisters. Emma reaches out and takes her hand. Encouraging her to talk. “Basically, things have gotten heated between us and-” Kara pauses, trying to find the words.
Emma tilts her head as she studies her sister’s face. The uncertainty written there.
“Ben, wasn’t born male.”
Emma straightens her head. Wondering why Kara was so hesitant about telling them this news. To her, this didn’t change how she saw Ben in any way and knew Alex would feel the same.
“Okay, what's the issue?” Alex asks, as if voicing Emma’s thoughts.
“There isn’t any issue! I mean, I was so touched when he told me. Rao, he was so nervous, I thought his heart was going to beat out of his chest! And I get him. I get having a secret, something that can make people view you differently as soon as you speak it out.”
Emma nods and squeezes Kara’s hand. Knowing this statement very well, she bites the inside of her lip. Debating at whether she should tell her sisters her own secret.
“I told you he was named after his Grandpa?” Kara says before Emma makes her decision. Both sister’s nod at Kara’s question. “Well, when he came out to his family, they all disowned him. Other than his Grandpa Benvolio, he literally saved Ben’s life. Gave him money to move to Metropolis from New York and supported him. Paid for his hormone treatment and top surgery.”
Emma’s heart pings with sympathy for Ben, finding it hard to imagine what he must have gone through.
“Rao.” Alex exclaims.
“Yea.” Kara looks away and fidgets.
Emma tilts her head and watches her. She squeezes her hand and Kara looks back. “There’s more?”
“Yea. Erm, as I said, things got heated and I have no idea what to do. I mean with Mon-El it was easy but, I really like Ben and I’m worried I could offend him or not please him the way I want to-”
Kara stops as Emma lifts her fingers to her lips to stop her rambling and panic that Kara was starting to go down.
“Have you spoken to him about this?”
“Yes, and he said he will wait for me, that there’s no issue.”
“So, what is the issue?”
“I-” Kara looks overwhelmed and flops forward, placing her head in her hands.
Emma motions at Alex and asks her to voice out her signs.
“The general rule is focus on feelings, ask him what feels good for him and go from there.” Alex says encouragingly to the other blonde. “Plus, everyone is different.”
Kara lifts her head and wipes her face with her hands. “Yea, I know I’m being stupid.”
“No! You aren’t.” Alex says firmly and takes Kara’s hand while Emma takes the other. “Anyone can see Ben is already smitten with you.” Kara’s cheeks colour and a dopey smile lifts her lips. “And evidently, you are with him.”
“Maybe.”
Emma lets out a snort and pops her tongue in response.
“See! Emma agrees with me!”
Kara tries to keep a straight face but soon her dopey grin appears and she sighs happily. “Yea, okay, I am enamoured with him.”
Emma claps and lunges at her sister, pulling her into a hug. Alex quickly joins in and they hold each other.
“I mean, it just happened, you know. I wasn’t actively looking for anyone and poof! He’s there and we get on so well and urgh!”
Emma pulls back to try and communicate. “Don’t think too hard about it.”
“Ems right.” Alex agrees and kisses Kara’s shoulder.
All of a sudden Emma lets out a huge, silent yawn and rubs her eyes.
“We should go, leave you to rest.” Alex lenas over and kisses Emma’s cheek but her sister’s face crumbles, not wanting them to go just yet.
“Aww! Don’t give us that look!” Kara pleads and pulls Emma back into a hug.
“Sorry Peanut but we have work to do.” Alex joins back in with the hug.
“We do?” Kara enquiries and Alex shoots her a look. “Oh yea! We do! Duh!”
The sisters untangle and Emma gets up despondently and hugs them goodbye. She watches Kara hold onto Alex and they take off towards the DEO.
‘Please be safe.’ Emma thinks as she leans on the railing and stays there until she can no longer see them. Emma takes a moment to breathe in the night air and lowers her head. Goosebumps suddenly appear across her arm and Emma looks at them in confusion. Shaking her head she goes back inside and closes the balcony door.
She gets her phone out of her jeans pocket and messages Lena.
Emma: I’m gonna head to bed, got a really bad headache, think you were right about the doughnuts! 🍩
Lena: Okay love. I am leaving soon, but I will make sure I do not disturb you.
Emma: Please still give me a kiss and cuddle 🥺
Lena: Always 💋
Emma smiles at her phone and staggers slightly to the bathroom to get ready for bed. By the time she falls into it she feels absolutely drained and berates herself for not revealing her own secret to her sisters.
‘I’ll do it soon.’ Emma promises to herself as her eyes close, too tired to keep them open any longer.

Quiet noises gradually wake Emma up. Movements from the bathroom, the sound of the shower and the hum of the extractor fan. She keeps her eyes closed and stretches like a cat, letting out a heavy breath as she settles back against the bed. Burying her cheek back into the pillow.
Then the noise of muffled footsteps catches her attention as they approach the bed.
Gentle fingertips brush against Emma’s forehead, making her jump slightly.
“Sorry love!” Lena softly apologises, her voice husky and deep from the early morning.
Emma feels the bed dip next to her and she slowly peels an eye open and gazes up at Lena sitting on the edge of the bed. Fully clothed in a purple tailor dress with her dark hair tied up in a tight bun.
Apprehensive green eyes stare down at her.
This makes Emma frown and open her other eye. She starts to sit up but Lena stops her by placing a hand on her bare shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. I need to head into work a bit earlier and I just wanted to let you know.”
Emma nods and pushes herself up anyway, rubbing her tired eyes. Lena’s eyes momentarily glance down at her bare chest before focusing on Emma’s hands. “You look beautiful.”
“Why thank you.” Lena smiles softly and her smile grows as Emma slowly leans forward and tilts her head. Lena meets her and their lips connect in a gentle kiss.
All too soon Lena pulls away, ignoring the adorable pout on Emma’s lips. “I’ll see you later tonight but please message me if you need anything.”
Emma nods and places her hand on Lena's, giving it a gentle squeeze three times.
“I love you too.” Lena whispers softly, guilt fills her at leaving Emma but she needs to get going. Taking a deep breath she stands and leaves the room. As she crosses the threshold, she looks back to Emma sadly staring at her. “Go back to sleep love.” Lena says as she softly closes the door behind her.
Emma flops back onto the bed and glances at the clock.
5:02am.
She swallows deeply but her eyes slowly close as sleep starts to overtake her again. The last thing Emma hears is Lena softly closing the apartment door.

Supergirl floats high in the sky above National City as she waits for the sun to rise.
Her eyes are closed as she repeats the breathing exercises Doctor Jackson had taught her to calm her down. She also tunes into the soothing sound of her loved ones' heartbeats. Alex, Eliza, Lena, J’onn, Sam, Nia, Brainy, Lucy… Emma.
Taking an extra long, deep breath, Kara focuses on her baby sister. Savouring the sound of her heart pumping. A heart she heard stutter and halt on that terrible day. A heart that was stopped by her hand.
Kara’s eyebrows knit together as her memories flash through her mind. Of the  terror on Emma’s face as Kara advanced. Of Emma’s desperate pleas for Kara to stop.
Slowly the warmth of the rising sun shines on the Superhero’s face and she opens her eyes at the welcome sight.
Her tired, aching body gets a surge of energy. Like a device when you plug it into charge. Or like Wall-e being struck by lightning and he instantly reached full charge.
Since leaving the DEO’s cell Supergirl has been more active then normal. Staying up longer and longer, barely having a moment's rest before she needed to change back into Kara.
Thankfully no one had called her up on it. Yet. Being aware of this, Supergirl would try and do her superhero work quietly and where she wouldn’t be seen. Rao knows how long that will last being Alex and J’onn calls her up on it.
Suddenly the wailing sound of a bank alarm causes Supergirl’s eyes to fly open. She turns in the direction of the robbery and zooms towards it.
-- -- --
A flash of light from Emma’s phone is what wakes her up next.
Rolling over she sleepily picks up her phone and squints at the screen through a sleepy eye.
Alex: Morning Em! Wondering if you wanted to have lunch with Kara and I?
Immediately Emma’s eyes fully open and she bolts up in bed. Dropping the phone to her lap she signs for Hope to brighten the windows.
Quickly she picks her phone back up and responds as the room brightens. Emma frowns when she notices the time on her phone was nearing eleven o'clock. She hadn’t meant to sleep that long.
Emma: Yes please! Where do you want to meet?
Alex: How about yours and Lena’s?
Emma tilts her head as she reads Alex’s response. She had expected Noonan’s or another one of their hangouts.
Emma: Sure, sounds good! Do you want me to make anything or shall we order?
Alex: Nah, I’ll pick something up on the way.
Emma: Okay, see you soon! 😘
Emma hasitedly jumps out of bed and immediately slams into the bathroom door. Dropping her phone to the floor as she stumbles back dazed and frowns.
“Are you alright Emma?” Hope’s voice calls out to her.
Emma nods and lifts a hand to her head. Her headache increases in strength and she grits her teeth at the pain.
“Are you sure? I can alert Ms Luthor if you wish?”
Emma shakes her head. But her heart freezes slightly when she looks at the distance between the door and the bed. A good fifteen feet.
Her phone pings again with confirmation from Alex that she will see her soon. This pulls Emma out of her thoughts as she rushes into the bathroom to have a shower and get ready to see her sisters.
-- -- --
Kara stares down at her phone and bites the inside of her lip as she re-reads Alex’s message.
Alex: Morning Kara, wanna have lunch with Em and I at Lena’s? Gonna get there in the next 15 mins or so with loads of yummy food!
Pausing her thumb over the keyboard Kara leans back in her office chair and takes a deep breath.
“Kara?” Nia asks in concern as she watches the anxiety playing on her friend's face.
“Yea?” Kara says, attempting a smile to make it seem like she was okay.
But Nia doesn’t believe it. “You all right?”
“I’m half left actually!” Kara forcibly laughs out but stops when Nia gives her a knowing, patient look. “Yea, I’m good. Just er, figuring out if I have the time to have lunch with Alex... And Emma.”
“Well, you don’t have a deadline, sooo?” Nia prompts, not understanding why Kara would be having trouble with this decision.
“Yea, you're right.” Kara lifts her phone to send a confirmation message to her sister. “Yea, yes. Lunch with my sisters.” Kara mutters before hitting send.
“Are you sure you're okay?” Nia watches her friend carefully.
“Fine.” Kara smiles brightly as she powers down her computer and stands to leave, not wanting to be asked anymore questions. “I’ll see you later.”
“Bye.” Nia frowns as she watches the blonde leave. She pulls out her phone and dials Alex’s number.
-- -- --
Emma sketches while she waits for her sisters to come. She’s already got their drinks ready on the coffee table and unlocked the balcony door in case Kara wants to fly over.
Eventually the doors do slide open and Emma snaps her head up to smile at Kara.
“Hey.” Kara says apprehensively as her eyes move around the apartment. “Where’s Alex?”
“Says she’ll be here soon.” Emma signs as she stands to give her sister a hug. Not missing the moment of hesitation from the other blonde when she approaches. Or the way Kara seemingly relaxes when she wraps her arms around her.
“Do you want to change?”
“Yea. I’ll-” Kara points her thumb to the bathroom and quickly zips into it before reappearing in her civilian clothes.
Emma sits on the sofa and pats the cushion next to her, inviting Kara to sit down.
Kara makes her way over and sits just enough away that, she thinks, shouldn’t cause suspicion.
“You okay?”
‘Rao! Why does everyone keep asking me that!’ Kara’s mind yells but outwardly she plasters a smile on her face. “Yea! I’m fine!
Emma narrows her eyes slightly, not missing how far Kara is sitting from her or that her smile is fake and doesn't reach her eyes.
“You do know what they say about the word fine, right?”
“Erm, no I don’t.” Kara says while taking her premade drink from the coffee table that Emma had gotten ready for her.
“Fucked up, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional.” Emma voicelessly chuckles before continuing to sign. “Describes how I am at the moment.”
Kara takes a long sip of her drink, avoiding Emma’s searching gaze.
Cautiously Emma reaches out and places her hand on her sister’s knee.
Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Kara makes eye contact again.
“Please Kar, we could always talk about anything. What’s wrong?”
Emma watches as the clogs turn in Kara’s mind. Like she’s figuring out what to say.
“Is it something to do with the amount of work you are doing? At Catco and as Supergirl?” Emma gently prompts and guessing by Kara’s deer in headlights reaction, she’s not far off the mark.
“I don’t know what you mean.” Kara goes to fiddle with her glasses but realises she hasn’t put them back on.
A tell tale sign to Emma that her sister was either lying or feeling anxious. Probably both. Most likely both.
Emma lets out a heavy breath as she silently sighs and picks up her phone. Causing Kara’s eyebrows to knit together.
Emma finds the report she was looking for and places it in her lap to be able to sign.
“Last night you were sighted at over fifty incidences around the city. The biggest one being around 5am involving a bank robbery. By the reports you wouldn’t have had time to sleep?” Emma watches Kara’s face carefully. How she swallows deeply and momentarily looks away from her. “Are you able to talk to someone about how you are feeling?”
“I’m seeing Doctor Jackson-” Kara starts to say but Emma interrupts her with a flurry of her hands.
“No I meant people who really care, like Alex, Lena, J’onn, Mom.”
“I-” But the words get caught in Kara’s throat and her eyes fill with tears. “I-”
Without hesitation Emma shuffles over to her sister and pulls her into a hug. Trying to pour all her love into Kara as she holds her in her arms.
Kara immediately holds on tight and buries her head into Emma’s shoulder. Allowing the pent up tears to pour from her eyes where Kara releases the sobs she had suppressed for so long, to finally escape her lips.
“I’m- so- so-rry!” Kara gulps out, feeling safe and secure in the warmth of her sister's arms.
Emma soothingly rubs circles around Kara’s back and strokes her head. Her anger towards those responsible simmers deep within her. How dare they try and dampen her sister’s spirit, causing her such anguish and hurt.
But Emma pushes it away and focuses on supporting Kara instead. Wishing she could whisper soothing words into her ear, instead she gently kisses her head. Trying to convey her words into actions.
The pair stay like this for a while until Alex knocks and opens the apartment door. She freezes when she hears Kara’s sobs. Emma looks over the top of the sofa and gives her a sad smile.
“Hey.” Alex says soothingly and quickly moves towards her sisters, placing the food on the coffee table and sits behind Kara. “What’s wrong?”
Kara doesn’t lift her head, insteading shaking it against Emma’s shoulder.
Alex looks to Emma to explain. Regretfully Emma lets go of Kara and lifts her hands up to communicate but Kara keeps a hold on her like a koala bear.
“I think she’s still caught up in what happened and hasn’t spoken to others about it. Keeping it pent up inside.”
Alex nods, though they had spoken about it in length to each other in the cell, and the redhead has to admit she does miss having Kara’s instant support. But Alex understands that Kara doesn’t have the same support or coping mechanisms in place that Alex does.
Without saying anything Alex moves closer to Kara and wraps her arms around both of her sisters.
“It’s okay Kara. Let it out.” Alex whispers softly the words Emma wants to say. She closes her eyes hoping that Kara is listening as Alex continues. “We both love you so much. You did nothing wrong.”
“How can you say that?!” Kara snaps, her eyes blazing with anger as she jumps up and turns on Alex. Who looks back at her with understanding. “I felt her neck cracking and breaking under my hand! I heard her heart stop before J’onn got her to the DEO!”
“Under our hands.” Alex corrects her and her eyes move to Emma still sitting behind Kara. Tears pooled in her eyes as she listened to the anguish in their voices.
Slowly she gets up, moves the food and drinks over on the coffee table and sits on it. Drawing her sister's attention to her.
“I need you both to pay attention. No looking away or interrupting me.” Emma stares at both of them, waiting for confirmation that they understand.
Both the sisters nod and move to face her.
“As I have stated before, I do not blame you.” Emma pauses, giving her statement time to sink in. “You were not in control.” Both sisters look ready to argue with her but Emma gives them a pointed look to stay quiet. “All three of us have suffered from this attack and I know you are both working overtime on finding out who did this.” Tears fall from Emma’s eyes and her face scrunches up as she wipes them away. “I need my sisters. Both of you. We are stronger together, not apart. I know I can’t help you in your search. But please, don’t shut me out.”
Her tears come thick and fast and both sisters simultaneously reach out to pull her onto the sofa with them. They wrap their arms around her and Kara sobs with Emma but Alex tries to bite her lip to stop her tears from falling.
“We got you.” Alex’s voice cracks and she scrunches her eyes up.
Emma senses this and moves her head to focus on her eldest sister. She moves her hand from Alex’s shoulder and rubs her thumb on the redhead’s cheek, causing Alex to jump at the contact.
“It’s okay.” Emma silently mouths but Alex frowns, unable to understand her. Unable to move her other arm, due to Kara clinging onto it, Emma reaches out and runs her fingers from Alex’s eye and down her face. Trying to indicate it was okay for Alex to cry.
When that doesn’t work, Emma points at herself, places a hand over her chest and then points at Alex.
“I love you.”
This starts to break Alex’s resistance. She sucks in her lips and gazes up at the ceiling. But a loving, warm hand cupping her cheek, finally breaks her and she nuzzles her face further into Emma’s hand. Allowing her tears to fall and cries to escape her lips.
Emma pulls her into a hug and holds her sisters close. Praying to Rao that they can move on from this.
-- -- --
Eventually the sisters run out of steam and they settle into just holding each other. That is until Kara’s stomach makes itself known by letting out an almighty grumble. The three of them freeze and blink at each other. Until all three of them lift their heads back and laugh. In that moment, Alex found she was okay not hearing Emma’s voice, the joyful expression on her face was enough.
“Come on, let's eat.” Alex kisses Emma’s head and slowly she pulls away from her. Alex groans as she feels her limbs ache from staying in the same position for a while.
“What did you get?” Kara asks while still surprisingly attached to Emma.
Alex smirks and lifts the carton out of the bag.
“POTSTICKERS!” Kara yells and flings herself off the sofa to look through the rest of the containers.
Emma silently chuckles and shakes her head at Kara. Emma moves forward and perches on the edge of the sofa to pass a plate to each of her sisters.
Alex divides the food, giving Kara the much bigger portion and they sit back to eat. Kara stays on the floor so she can see both her sisters.
“Soooo, Alex.” She beams up at them while Emma turns and raises an eyebrow at the redhead.
“What?” Alex asks casually, a smile tugging at her lips. She feels Emma tap her arm and looks at her.
“How was your date last night?”
Alex’s cheeks start to blush and she smiles bashfully.
Emma turns to Kara and smiles sweetly at her, Kara scrunches her nose up adorably  before focusing back on the redhead.
“It, er, went really well.” Alex’s smile grows. “I mean, I knew Sam was amazing and beautiful and-” Alex stabs her food as she continues. “-what she sees in me I have NO idea but-” She lets out a deep breath and gazes up at her sisters. “I’ve found I’m already so in love with her.”
Tears of happiness prick Emma’s eyes, reflecting at how happy Alex looks.
She is practically glowing.
Emma’s eyes widen slightly at the realisation. ‘Bow chicka wow wow.’ Emma thinks and a smirk appears on her face.
Alex notices this as she shovels more food in her mouth. She tilts her head at her sister to explain but Kara interrupts before Emma can.
“So when did she pick you up? What did she wear? What did you eat? Was it nice?” Kara quickly fires off and Alex swallows to answer.
“She picked me up right on time. She wore a gorgeous navy dress-”
“It was stunning.” Emma agrees and shows Kara a picture Lena took of Sam before she left.
“Wow! She looks incredible! And you matched!” Kara beams at her sisters and Alex chuckles.
“We shared a pizza-” Alex holds a hand up to stop the outrage Kara was about to unleash. “-and a pasta dish because we couldn’t decide what to have.”
“Dessert?” Kara asks innocently.
Unfortunately Emma was taking a sip of her drink and her previous realisation causes her to take a sudden intake of breath. Promptly making her choke on the liquid as it shoots down her windpipe.
“Emma!” Alex lunges towards her and goes to pat Emma’s back.
But the blonde coughs and is able to  breathe.
“Sorry!” Emma signs while Alex rubs her back. “Went down the wrong way!”
“Question is-” Kara looks at her confused. “Why did it? I only asked about dessert?”
Emma smiles widely and gives Alex a side glance. Noticing the red that is starting to tinge her cheeks.
“What am I missing?” Kara looks back and forth between her two sisters.
“Nothing.” Alex says quickly and Emma teasingly bumps her shoulder against her sister’s. “So, we shared a tiramisu AND chocolate fudge cake.”
The moment Alex said “shared”, she knew she needed to speed up, especially with the returned expression of horror on Kara’s face. Which immediately went when chocolate fudge cake was mentioned.
“And then what happened? Did you hold hands?” Kara squeals. “Did you kiss?!”
Emma snorts and turns away from her sisters to hide her expression. She loves how clueless Kara can still be. ‘Please Rao, may she never change.’
“What?” Kara blinks at Emma’s back and Alex’s vivid attention at a piece of loose thread on her flannel.
The crinkle appears as Kara tries to make sense of her sister’s reactions.
“Yea, we, erm… kissed.” Alex says quietly.
“Was it bad?” A look of surprise crosses Kara’s face at Alex’s reaction.
Alex lifts her head up and smiles weakly. “No, it was- Rao.” The redhead breathes out, remembering the fireworks when her lips touched Sam’s. The instant fire that spread around her body as the kiss heated up. The need and longing between them melted her apprehension away.
Emma turns to look at Alex, wanting to see her expression. ‘Aww.’ She thinks and smiles fondly.
“Good?” Kara prompts helpfully.
“Better than good.” Alex grins and momentialy looks down, embarrassed at the images of last night and the early morning play through her mind.
Kara tilts her head, reminding Emma of a cute but very confused puppy.
Deciding to put Kara out of her confused misery, Emma lifts her hands, creating two peace signs and inserting them together. She gives Kara a very pointed look and a raised, suggestive eyebrow.
It takes Kara a moment before it clicks. Her face goes as bright as a tomato.
“OH!” Kara exclaims, her eyes and mouth open as wide as they can go.
Alex’s head snaps up and spins to see what Emma was doing to get that kind of reaction from Kara.
Emma tries to quickly lower her hands but Alex catches her.
“EMMA!”
“Opps.” Emma signs with a cheeky smile.
-- -- --
“Goodnight Ms Luthor.” Her driver tilts his head as Lena gracefully slides out of the car.
“Goodnight.” She responds and heads towards the apartment doors where security is already waiting for her.
“Good Evening Ms Luthor.” They individually greet her and she nods at them as she passes to get to the elevator.
She was bone tired and wanted nothing more than to crawl into bed next to Emma.
Lena gets into the elevator and stares at her exhausted face in the mirror as it starts to climb to the penthouse. She exhales deeply, hoping that Emma won’t be too upset with her for working late into the night. One minute it had been 6pm and Jess was leaving for the day, the next Lena was blinking at the clock and it was 1am. Seemingly old habits don’t die easily.
The worst was seeing Emma’s periodic messages, asking if she was okay and when she was coming home. Truthfully they made her heart fall into her stomach at how she had been so preoccupied with paperwork that she hadn’t heard her private phone buzz. But her girlfriend’s last message had made her smile.
Emma: Sam reassures me you are alive, I would come get you but I’m currently being held captive by a sleeping Kryptonian.
Emma had even snapped a photo of Kara sleeping on her shoulder and an awake Alex smiling at the camera with Emma.
The doors slide open and Lena quietly heads for her door, tilting her head when she can see the soft glow of the lights still on and the flicker of the tv.
She silently puts her keys in the door and carefully unlocks it. Stepping inside she smiles at the back of the three heads resting against the sofa.
A hand, which she recognises as Emma’s, lifts into the air and waves at her. Slipping off her heels Lena carefully walks around the sofa and smiles at the sisters.
They had changed into comfy pajamas and had pulled out the sofa bed where they were leaning up against the sofa cushions and pillows. Their sister's lunch had turned into an impromptu sister’s day which went into a sister’s sleepover of watching movies and bingeing on junk food.
Currently Emma was the only one awake, having heard Lena come in and was smiling back at her girlfriend. Alex and Kara were both snuggled into Emma’s side and were fast asleep.
Emma lifts her hand and again waves at the raven haired beauty.
“Hi love.” Lena whispers and leans over Kara to place a soft kiss on Emma’s lips. She pulls away and gazes lovingly down at her. “Are you okay?”
Emma nods sleepily and yawns.
Lena looks around her and sees another blanket the sisters weren’t using. Carefully she places it over them, tucking it around Alex and Kara and leaves a kiss on each of the sister’s heads. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
Emma smiles up at her and nods again.
Lena turns the tv off and dims the windows and lights until they switch off.
Emma closes her eyes and rests her head against Alex’s. Happy her sisters had stayed and feeling content with being back together with them.
