Idk if it'll ever come to fruition lol, but how would you want an eddie queer arc to unfold?
the catholic guilt thing is a good starting-off point, it has some very delicious potential as long as they actually take a serious turn with it instead of playing it for laughs. and on that note, it would be interesting for eddie to have to reckon with some aspects of his childhood/teenage years while on this journey (new eddie lore maybe??) and how it might have impacted his general approach to his sexuality. i'd love LOVE for him to talk about this with ramon, with ramon being slightly confused about it all, but determined to be supportive, something that would certainly be healing for eddie's inner child.
and at the end of it all...i'd just like eddie to have fun with it for a while? to go date around a bit, feel comfortable with that aspect of himself, know what's it's like to casually date without the pressures or anxieties he's used to.

pushing back hard against the idea that eddie should be the one to indicate to buck that they could be something. ummmmm no actually buck doesn’t need to just have another moment where he falls into something because he didn’t realize it was an option or he didn’t know he could want it until it was right in front of him. buck needs to be decisive and he needs to go in with his eyes wide open and he’s in a position to do so because eddie already sat him down and said because, evan. and maybe eddie deserves to have what he wants without feeling like he could lose what’s most important to him at any moment. buck and eddie are special because buck broke down eddie’s door once already. he should do it again. then eddie can invite him in.

(for @tommykinrd beloved <3)
[ID: four gifs of Evan Buckley and Eddie Diaz in 7.05 and 6.15. GIFs 1 and 3 from 7.05 are in color, and GIFS 2 and 4 from 6.15 are black and white.
GIF 1: A close-up for Buck's face, a shy smile on his face as he watches Eddie, telling him about Tommy. The text reads, "I kind of can't stop thinking about him."
GIF 2: Buck looking pensively into the distance as he and Eddie stand in the cemetery, talking about Natalia. He says, "There's something...different about her. I feel like she sees me."
GIF 3: Eddie looking lost in thought, his expression unbearably sad for a long moment before he gathers himself, his eyebrows going up as he takes in a breath before continuing to speak.
GIF 4: Eddie's head snapping over to look at Buck, his expression creased at he watches him. He does not look happy with Buck's words.

evan buckley who will wax eloquence about what an incredible person eddie is to every person in existence except eddie himself vs eddie diaz who will drop the most heartfelt confessions of devotion on buck but keep that shit to himself otherwise and not say a word about it to any other person in his life 🥴

whenever i rewatch 2x01, i'm always amazed at what a great job this episode does in introducing eddie and maddie as main characters, telling us key facts about them without too much exposition or revealing too much in general; all the while managing to balance the rest of the ensemble so we know what's going on with them. and the way maddie and eddie are introduced are tailored to fit their respective characters.
with maddie, she's still very isolated at this point—for obvious reasons. so we actually get to see her POV for her scenes, and we learn some important details about her: 1) she's buck's older sister, 2) there's a significant age gap between them, 3) she and buck are not on good terms with their parents, 4) she's on the run from an abusive relationship, 5) although she hasn't been in contact with buck for three years, she still feels safe enough to run to him, telling us what a deep bond they actually have, 6) she used to be a nurse.
(most of these facts about their childhood that we can glean in 2x01 aren't even expounded on until s4, btw. but i think it's still pretty impressive how the seeds were planted so early on, that, yeah, it wasn't a shock to find out that the buckley parents were neglectful, or that maddie was basically parentified.)
with eddie, it's completely different. i don't think we get a single scene of his from his POV in 2x01, actually—every scene of his is told from the perspective of the characters around him. at this point, we still don't know some of the most important aspects of his character—he's a father, his marriage is failing. but we're still told some very essential facts that form the basis of his character: 1) he was in the army, but he's clearly not proud of his service/doesn't like bringing it up unless it's to help him at work, 2) he's charming and personable enough that he's able to win over the firefam—with the exception of buck—almost instantly, in a way no other new addition to the 118 ever has, 3) he clearly values teamwork and wants to get to know his coworkers—his focus on trying to win buck over is indicative of this, 4) he not only willingly put himself in a dangerous situation with the grenade, but also trusted buck implicitly right away, which suggests that despite the responsible and sensible impression he gives off, he has a hidden tendency for impulsivity—and we now know he does.
idk, all of this to say that i just...really appreciate this episode and how well it handled the introduction of these two characters. it's never an easy thing to pull off, particularly in an already packed ensemble cast. but they handled it beautifully, and i still remember how impressed i was while watching it for the first time.

Eddie’s PTSD
So I’ve been reading I Always Sit with My Back to the Wall, which is about PTSD in veterans specifically, and I’m pretty sure at least one of the 911 writers read it because it seems to be the instructions they built Eddie from. I didn’t start reading it for any reason relating to 911, but once it clicked, it was hard not to think about Eddie because it describes pretty much everything about him.
The book talks about two general groupings of symptoms that veterans with PTSD often fall into (generally speaking, obviously it’s not always either/or): “Locked and Loaded” and “Hunkered in the Bunker”.
“Locked and Loaded” (fight/flight) is how we usually see veterans dealing with war trauma represented in media. They’re always on guard and hypervigilant. They have an exaggerated startle response, they’re prepared for attack, they’re ready to fight, and it’s a lot more outwardly apparent that something is wrong. It’s actively protecting themselves and having an active, physical response to a situation their instincts perceive as a threat, whether that’s defense or retreat.
“Hunkered in the Bunker” (freeze) is more of an internal slow down, preserving energy to survive until the odds are better and it’s safe to move. It’s being emotionally numb and avoidant, pretending everything is fine, never complaining, and often staying in traumatic situations that are overwhelming and stressful because moving feels futile or more dangerous. It’s considered more passive, “hiding” to protect from both danger and attention. (Sidenote: medical professionals often develop a freeze response in order to treat their patients in dangerous situations.)
