My latest attempt at learning how to make world maps.  I’m actually very proud of this attempt!  Still working on smaller maps with other art styles.  Made on Inkarnate.

I was supposed to create a map of a village but it kinda grew into a decent sized town.  My D&D players came here for a festival, which is why there is a tent city for visitors.  The actions of the players have drawn the attention of the Sapphire Circle, a mage’s college, and they’ve taken over a large tent left from the festival.  The temple has shrines to almost all of the local dieties.  The town is mostly halfings and elves, with some orcs and minotaurs that come from the local mountains to trade.
I added an unnamed version in case you want to use it.  I used Inkarnate to create this.

“Don’t get inspired”
My girlfriend is a big fan of the Dark Souls and Bloodborne series and she is currently playing Dark Souls 2 for the first time.  She frequently wants to show me specific characters, landscapes, bosses, etc.  Then she’ll remember that I DM a D&D campaign she’s in and not want to deal with the horrible bosses/traps she’s showing me.  So every time she tells me not to get inspired and to not put that boss in our campaign XD

Blue Alley Module Review
Blue Alley was one of the modules Wizards gave out at the beginning of May.  I really enjoyed it but it’s meant for specific groups of players.
If you’re a DM that enjoys a trap filled deathtrap, you’ll enjoy this.  There is minimal story, an insane wizard build a deathtrap and invites adventurers to enter and die in the hopes of treasure, with rumors of people watching them through the complex and placing bets on their survival/death.  You’re sent in for a unicorn statue, hired by a random dude.  I would personally change this, you can keep the unicorn but change who hires you.  At the very least instead of the rich guy running into you in a tavern, have him invite the party to a fancy manor for the job.  Ramp up the drama a bit and create a memorable npc you can use later.
I really enjoyed the traps.  I don’t want to spoil too much though.  They’re deadly but not instant kill; your party can make it through without fatalities if they work together.  The traps are very creative, and the dungeon has several keys all over the place so there will be some backtracking.
I would say if you run this module you should ramp up the horror.  Several traps involve player madness, and there’s a scene where you see a mural of dying adventurers and your players can see themselves on there dying.  So modify the traps to personally mess with what scares the characters, or have the madness have more effects in the dungeon.
I highly recommend this module if your party seem the kind of people that would sign up for a deathtrap reality show for treasure.  Otherwise I’d say look into other modules unless you want to steal some of the traps here.

My Ayara commander deck is easily the most terrifying deck I have.  I have endless cards that generate black creature tokens and Grey Merchant and K’rrik as finishers.  I also use Plague of Vermin as my instant kill card.

The monocolor commanders from Eldraine were super underrated

Alternate Alignment for Dungeons and Dragons
I’ve been wanting to avoid the usual alignment because I’m tired of players that try to argue they’re not evil for burning down every village and betraying everyone.  The Ixalan guide for D&D has a section on the Magic the Gathering mana colors and I’m thinking of using these to replace the normal alignment.  This will focus less on good versus evil, and more your personality and how you react to the world.
You can be chaotic but still follow your own internal rules, so use red and white.  You can be ruthless but still have good intentions, so use white and black.  This gives more flexibility for players, and I feel it’ll help players that feel trapped by their alignment. They let their alignment dictate their actions instead of the other way around.  What do you think?

Treasure of the Broken Hoard Review for New DMs
This is one of the free modules Wizards of the Coast gave out on their site last week.  I highly recommend checking if they’re still offered because they’re good for beginners and each begins with a guide on running a campaign.
Of the modules released, this one has been my favorite for new DMs and players.  The module is build as 5 one hour encounters, which I enjoy because when you’re starting a new group, encounters will take longer as everyone looks up spells and decides on their team dynamic.  There are also several charts on difficulty so if you have a small or large group it’ll tell you how to modify enemies so things don’t become too difficult or easy.  Your players can also recruit a bear the size of a house cat, so that’s pretty awesome!
The module centers around a fallen cult of an evil dragon god.  A famous treasure hunter hires the party to find hidden caches of treasure left by this cult.  One important thing DMs should know is the module foreshadows a war between the different giant tribes, so if you don’t want this in your campaign you could change these hints to lead to whatever villain you’re wanting.
I’ve never played in Adventurer’s League, but I’m totally digging how each encounter has positive and negative achievements that give lasting effects depending on the players’ actions.  The negative effects can be removed by Remove Curse, so you don’t have to worry about permanently crippling your characters.
I’ll review the other modules later.  If you can recommend resources for new DMs and players please comment and share!  Have a great Mother’s Day!!
