Freaking out over the latest updates made me realize I haven’t done a proper Paranatural plug in a while, so

Hey you, do you like kids with superpowers, mysteries, ghosts and magic spirits, gorgeous webcomics, supporting LGBTQ+ creators, and absolutely stellar humor? Of course you do!

Then let me introduce you to a gem of a webcomic called Paranatural, written and drawn by a nonbinary person named Zack Morrison.

Paranatural is centered around a middle school kid named Max Puckett, whose family has just moved to his dad’s old hometown of Mayview.

Upon arriving, he starts to see some strange things, and quickly discovers that he is something called a spectral: a living person who can see ghosts and use spectral energy. He meets the (Paranatural) Activity Club, a group of kids and a teacher at his new school who are all spectrals:

From left to right: Ed, the silent weird one who’s really just an insecure bean; Isaac, the resident Angsty Child who’s living in a shounen anime; Max; and Isabel, the girl who can kick anyone’s ass but also loves all her friends dearly. Mr. Spender, the teacher in the background who heads up the Activity Club, is hopelessly, hilariously uncool but also definitely involved in some Shady Shit™. There’s a ton of mysterious and suspicious characters, and like any good mystery, every time we get some answers we just dig even deeper and get even more questions.

The art style goes through a fairly radical shift between about chapters 3 and 4, and right at the beginning of the comic it’s also very sketchy and it isn’t in color for a few pages. However, even early on there are some gorgeous scenes:

And it only gets better and better. A true testament to an artist improving their craft as they go:

Everything with the ghosts is drawn so beautifully that it really fully draws you into this surreal double world that the spectrals live in. The characters, meanwhile, are incredibly expressive. Zack takes full advantage of the comic/cartoon style to go all-out with exaggerating facial expressions and creating amazingly energized panels. They know exactly how to make this story leap off the page. Case in point: Johnny Jhonny and his crew:

There are so many, many INCREDIBLE and HILARIOUS characters in this comic that I couldn’t possibly begin to list them all, but Johnny is one of my absolute favorites. He’s unbelievably funny, a subversion of the bland school bully archetype, and is generally just one of the most entertaining characters in the entire webcomic.

Other highlights of the best characters include:

Dr. Zarei, another spectral and absolute disaster wlw. Too much information about her would be spoilers, but she’s incredibly smart and an all around really cool character.

There’s also PJ, the resident ghost haunting Max’s house. He is precious and must be protected at all costs, and a good example of how this comic can hit you with a gut punch emotional moment when you least expect it.

Finally, because like I said this list could go on forever but I had to pick some favorites, there’s the Journalism Club:

Suzy, on the far left, is particularly entertaining and exists to make Max’s life extremely difficult as he half-heartedly attempts to hide being a spectral and she attempts to break into investigative journalism by unearthing the Activity Club’s true purpose. Dmitri, on the far right, is the subject of a lot of fan speculation about his past and is a really cool character.

Not convinced yet? If I haven’t said it enough, this comic is FUNNY AS SHIT. It’s so goddamn clever in ways I couldn’t even begin to come up with, and half the time Zack goes out of their way to include background bits they didn’t even need to have:

At the same time, there’s some powerful lines and serious philosophy and moral questions that the characters are forced to confront

Much like Danny Phantom or other similar shows, there are some seriously dark ideas lurking under the comedy, and Zack does not shy away from including dark or painful moments in the story. Some of the ghosts and spirits have VERY disturbing implications.

Zack balances the serious elements spectacularly with the humor, almost always allowing the emotional or disturbing moments to sink in just long enough before breaking the tension with another joke.

The whole series will keep you on your toes with unexpected twists and turns and some seriously frightening implications and foreshadowing that you’ll be dying to get back to, but you can’t even be mad while you wait because the story never quits being fascinating. There’s never a boring or wasted page in the entire thing, and there are incredible, freakout-worthy plot twists around the corner when you least expect them.

tl;dr If you’re not reading Paranatural you’re missing out on an incredible story with wildly entertaining characters and excellent humor. You can start reading here; don’t be put off by the sketchy art at first because it gets so much better really quickly and then just keeps improving.

HOLY FREE ART PROGRAMS BATMAN

I’ve had this list sitting around for a while (in case I ever want to try something new) and I thought I’d share it, because why the hell not, everybody loves free stuff. I’ve only used a couple, so for all I know these could be complete shit. BUT YOU NEVER KNOW, RIGHT?

*= available for both windows and mac os

GIMP * - Does a lot of the same stuff as Photoshop.

FireAlpaca * - Similar to Paint Tool Sai, so it’s a good alternative for Mac users.

Autodesk Sketchbook Copic Edition * - Simulates the look of copic markers.

MyPaint * - Basic stuff, nothing fancy.

Pinta * - Drawing program modeled after paint.NET.

Inkscape * - Vector/drawing program meant to be similar to Illustrator.

ArtRage * - Digital painting program; you can get the trimmed down version for free or buy the full version with more features.

Sumo Paint * - In-browser drawing app.

DAZ Studio * - Some sort of 3D model poser thing.

Pencil * - Software for animating.

SketchUp * - Tool for making 3D models. Looks handy for stuff like architectural drawings.

Blender * - Pretty popular 3D software.

escape motions * - Some browser apps, fun to fiddle with when you’re bored (the fluid fire simulation is pretty cool imo).

Twistedbrush (Pixarra) - Seems to be meant for replicating the look of traditional media.

Pixia/Phierha - A popular program in Japan, according to the website.

Krita - This was originally made for Linux and it looks like the developers haven’t ironed out all of the kinks in the Windows installer.

Artweaver - Another trimmed down free thing if you don’t want to buy the full program.

paint.NET - Pretty basic kit, probably good for simple stuff.

Project Dogwaffle - I’m not sure what this one is all about because I couldn’t stop laughing at the terrible website.

Speedy Painter - Lightweight digital painting program.

mtPaint - Originally made for pixel art; simple enough to run on older computers.

Chasys Draw IES - Supposed to be some sort of drawing+image editor thing.

PaintRibbon - Seems to be another plain old basic image editor.

DrawPlus - Looks like it’s made for graphic design and vector stuff.

SmoothDraw - I’m guessing this is a basic thing for people who don’t want to bother with complicated stuff.

THERE IS A PETITION TO STOP THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE FROM VOTING FOR TRUMP

For those of you who don’t know, the Electoral College has the final say in December. It’s only happened once or twice, but sometimes they vote against a candidate who’s already “won”. Candidates can win the popular election and still lose the electoral college’s election. THIS IS OUR LAST SLIVER OF A CHANCE TO KEEP BUTT TRUMPET OUT OF OFFICE!
