THIS. I also saw this a couple times with Yuri from DDLC
An Asian’s views on blackwashing Asian characters:
I usually don’t speak about race-bending publicly, but after seeing other people talking about it on Tumblr and race-bending being a kinda big thing on Twitter, I’d like to make my own kind of essay about it. For now, I’ll just be talking about people race-bending my own race and that I’ll mostly be focusing on anime characters:
Not all anime characters have a specified race. When they do, they’re mostly Japanese (or at least Asian), as most anime takes place in Japan. Asians have a variety of skin tones, obviously.
I’m an Asian on the darker scale of skin tones, but Asians can have any skin tone. So, no, I am not a “white person speaking over Asians”
Asia is not just East Asia, as Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and Western Asia are Asian too.
I have many problems with race-bending, especially when it involves Asian culture, which is my culture.
I’d like it if people reading this will fully read it and will understand where I’m coming from.
The character is not yours. You shouldn’t change the racial element of a character that isn’t yours.
It’s better to create your own character and have them be inspired by the character you want to race-bend.
Races are not interchangeable. Race-bending is a racist version of redesigning a character.
Artists can say “it’s just harmless fun” or “It’s not as bad as whitewashing”. Every race should have right representation. But that’s the thing. Changing a race of a character is not the right way. Race-bending any character can be very racist since it’s erasing the representation that race gets.
Whenever artists race-bend a canonically Asian character, I feel personally offended. I hate the mentality of changing a character’s race just so you can relate to them. You don’t have to change their race to relate to them. You can relate to them because of their personality, backstory, etc. You can like a character, even if they’re not the same race as you.
Black people may not be represented right (sometimes at all), but Asians (and just about every minority) also have the same problem. You can’t just “fix” a race’s problem by increasing problems for another race.
No one is Asian-washing black characters. Example, since this series has a lot of diversity: Josuke Higashikata from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable/Diamond is Not Crash. People draw Josuke, the half-Japanese and half-British character of Japanese nationality, black. You can literally look up “josuke black” and know what I’m talking about. Artists doing that are not just making Josuke’s skin color darker, they’re replacing his features with black people’s features. If an artist draws Muhammad Avdol from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, the black man of Egyptian nationality, Asian, they definitely would be called racist. But when an artist turns an Asian character black, it’s okay? No, both are racist.
The “Blasians exist” excuse: If you redesign a character to be mixed, their features should be mixed. If you erase the defining racial features of an Asian and replace them with black features, you are not drawing a Blasian, you are drawing a Black person. I really hate it when artists redraw a character as black and say they’re mixed race when they erase literally every racial feature to put in another.
Why can’t people just draw their own black character?
Why not make an OC if you want black representation?
It’s much better than altering a canon character since it doesn’t have racist elements in it.
The reason I’m writing about blackwashing and not whitewashing is because everyone seems to agree that whitewashing is bad.
Imagine taking an Asian character and making them black. Sounds racist to me.
But all race-bending is bad.
Even my mixed African-Asian friend (who actually comes from Africa) doesn’t like it when people draw Asian characters black.
As an Asian, I would much rather want to see someone having a black OC than someone redrawing characters of my own race to fit the features of black people.
As an Asian, I would much rather want to see someone having an Asian OC than someone redrawing black characters (or characters of any other race). (Then again, people aren’t drawing non-Asians Asian)
Races are not interchangeable, no matter what.

Bro I was reading a fanfic and saw that they were supporting billy and calling Max an abuser so I commented something on the lines of "Personally I don't like or support Billy" and they responded with "And why do you do that?"
And then I said "Because I just don't feel comfortable supporting someone who is racist and abuses people." AND I KID YOU NOT THEY BLOCKED ME AND SAID "Thanks for letting me know before I block you 😜"
And that's why I hate fanfic writers /j

If you want Billy supporters to "go the fuck away", don't come lashing out at them and starting shit and instigating. You can't tell people not to react if you go around biting at them.
Nah.

Billy was a villian in s2 to s3 to push forward max and lucas' relationship. Bily commit many crimes such as attempted murder, assault of a child, and committing a hatecrime against a young black boy. The fact that you are practically in love with this man tells me a lot about your character. To be honest, Jonathan, Max, and Eleven (abuse victims that didnt do atrocious things) were 10x better written characters than billy ever was. Also no, Billy wasnt protwcting max, he was abusing her. She was scared he'd hurt her half the time. The fact you think Billy was "protecting her" tells me you really dont understand abuse. If in some universe Billy was protecting Max, then Neil was protecing Billy. Billy was blatanly racist as well. You literally look into the smallest little details (that dont even exist) and makes things up in your head to somehow believe Billy is a saint. Still praises the duffers over the fact they find him irredeemable and killed him off.
Billy deserved better. I hate the way he was treated not only in s2 and s3 by his abusive father and everyone who knew he was flayed and could’ve helped him but chose no mercy, but even after his death. They might as well have spat on his grave. He was a victim of child abuse, and many antis fail to understand this and its effect on his psyche. When you grow up in a violent and abusive home and there’s no one to protect you, especially considering the fact that his mom fled Neil and abandoned Billy as a child, it is incredibly easy to develop a sense of general mistrust of people as well as maladaptive coping mechanisms. No, Billy wasn’t pure or sugary sweet, but he wasn’t a bad person at heart. Our girl El made that very clear with her psychic connection to him and her understanding, revealing his true nature to us before his final moment. If SHE knew that, how is everyone else so blind and unwilling to accept it?
It’s also important to acknowledge that he was PROTECTIVE OVER MAX. EVERYTHING HE DID was out of caring for her well being, looking out for her, even if he was harsh and abrasive about it. What older brother, biological or not, wouldn’t be wary of other boys (ESPECIALLY boys his own age like Steve) around his little sister? That makes sense.
Let’s address the “racism” now. Billy. Was not. Racist. Just because Lucas is black doesn’t mean Billy was discriminating. No, I’m not forgetting about his comment in the car about “certain kinds of people we stay away from” or whatever, and here’s why: BILLY WAS SPEAKING IN CODE. Watch it again, and you’ll notice he communicates this way a few times with undertones and double meanings. This was a warning, because Neil was openly racist and this was even made clear in the novel Runaway Max by Brenna Yovanoff. Neil had gotten violent with Max in the beginning, turning his abuse on her before they even moved to Hawkins and Billy didn’t want to see this little girl getting beaten bruised and bloody the way he did behind closed doors. That’s what Neil would’ve done if he found out about Lumax. This is very important. Billy was WARNING Max, trying to tell her without actually having to say the ugly truth. Now, he wasn’t racially discriminating against Lucas because the fact that Max was at STEVE’s house of all people, a much older boy, he got freaked out and even said that gave him the “heebie jeebies”. He didn’t know Steve’s intentions with her, and older teenage boys can be perverts. (I’m sure he knew that better than anyone, as hormonal as they are). He ALSO wasn’t aware of the supernatural events at play in Hawkins or creatures from the Upside Down or any of that. This is why he beat Steve up. I’m sure any guy would want to beat up a guy they thought was being creepy or a threat to their little sister.
But what did Billy do in his spare time? He was a lifeguard. This is key to his characterization as a PROTECTOR. He could’ve taken any other easy teen summer job, but that’s a substantial aspect of his personality.
And the mind flayer wasn’t his fault. We saw the real Billy coming through, pleading for help and genuinely apologizing for what it made him do because HE DIDN’T WANT TO DO THOSE THINGS. But what happened? He STILL got punished for it and nobody tried to save him. That was stone cold heartless, and I feel that may have been fanservice or influenced by the fandom’s hateful reactions to him as we’re currently in a radical SJW era where especially Gen Z is quick to attack and rip people to shreds with -isms on their keyboards for the slightest misconstrued thing.
But Billy was never a villain, and he literally sacrificed his life to save people. Young defenseless children. He knew what it was like to be one, dealing with a monster. He protected Max until his last breath, and his life was heartbreaking. And season 4 couldn’t have been more disrespectful to him. Notice the only flashbacks we got were Billy flayed, as if the Duffers themselves were villainizing him for possession? He had no control of his body, that shouldn’t have been held against him. He was a victim, he was used and attacked in more ways than one and he didn’t deserve any of that treatment.
DACRE HIMSELF said that Billy isn’t racist, and the fandom knows this full well but they choose to invalidate him, plug their ears and scream LA LA LA like petulant toddlers.
Billy was a hero, he deserves appreciation and he was a good person deep down. His heart was in the right place, even if he had some unhealthy coping mechanisms and ways of externalizing his pain. He was damaged, but never a monster. We know who the real monsters are. (And Vecna actually has stans?!?)
He deserved to live, but it seems like he was just thrown away and stomped on. I hate this so much. Maybe it takes someone in the fandom who’s experienced child abuse to know a character like that, but there are people who identify with Billy because they’re willing to look at the details and ACTUALLY pay attention to him rather than spit hateful accusations and parrot antis for their “woke” points and social media clout.
But Billy was one of the richest, deepest and most complex characters I have ever seen throughout my experience as a fan of fiction. I appreciate and even love him for everything he was: messy, raw, honest, expressive, highly emotional and REAL. And you know what? That’s humanity, baby.

As an abuse victim if I ever acted like that I hope I would be locked up and jail and beaten to death 💀💀💀
The only reason Billy gets away with his blatantly racism, abuse, and crimes is because he's a handsome man.
Stop acting like you're "protecting" abuse victims and just say it as what it is. You're biased because a handsome white man has daddy issues and therefore he has done no wrong. Bffr.
Billy Hargrove antis use the Runaway Max book to justify hating Billy too much.
“Billy was such a horrible person in the book! He canonically gave Max a cigarette, lit a dead cat on fire, broke Max’s friend’s arm, and broke her skateboard!”
You know what else is canon?

Sure, Billy’s a massive dick but that’s because he’s had an unfair life. The Billy fandom isn’t trying to get all of you to love Billy but at least respect our opinions 💀 Do antis not realize that most people that like him have similar issues? It just shows how some of you would treat an abuse victim in real life.

He's racist and you're supporting him 🥰
That makes you an asshole
“You’re still defending Billy after-”
Yes. There’s nothing you can say about Billy either in the TV canon or in Runaway Max that will stop me from defending Billy as a survivor who deserved to heal from his trauma. There’s nothing he did that is any worse than what I’ve seen in real life from real survivors. There’s nothing you can say that will justify the abuse and the torture he endured, nor his death. Your hate is your responsibility. Not mine.

So, what I'm saying is, that if I had a quarter for every time someone claimed Billy was racist with no real evidence stating that, I'd be rich.

Neil billy and Max's mom are all 🚩🚩🚩
I know how people feel about Runaway Max, but the scene in which Neil beats Billy in the kitchen and Max tries to get him to stop illustrates perfectly how abusers pit victims against each other. Max tries to say something? Neil just beats Billy harder, and solidifies in Billy’s brain that Max is going to get him hurt more. He pushes Max away, and Max internalizes that Billy isn’t safe to be around. This is all by Neil’s design, as it helps him maintain power over the household.
Even if you don’t want to refer to Runaway Max for evidence because of it dubious connection to canon, there is the fact that Billy and Max both blame each other for the move despite it being a decision their parents made. So, the bitterness between them is over something neither of them can control. Then, Billy is put in charge of Max creating more animosity in Max and Max running off has severe consequences for Billy creating more animosity in Billy.
All of it goes back to Neil.

"But he was abused 🥺🥺🥺" bffr
Girls be like: "i can fix him"
The guy: burns cats, abuses his little sister, breaks random ass kids arms, is racist, assaulted multiple children, flirts with literal mothers, is rude to his step mom, tries to run over some kids and beat the shit out of a guy cuz he stopped him from assaulting a child, he probs would've killed the guy if he didn't get put to sleep by his girlboss of a step sister.
