Thoughts on Caldre nobody asked for 😈😈

For me I feel like I think of Caldre in terms of 3 different categories: canon, Headcanon, and fanon

CANON vers:

This is the version of Cal and Andre that goes purely by what we are shown in canon. In this version, let’s be honest, Cal and Andre are not a thing. They’re just two desperate angry straight white guys who get no play and pretend they’re okay with that. Their relationship is close, don’t get me wrong, and is certainly strangely codependent, but I don’t think any actual romantic or sexual attraction is involved.

FANON vers:

Or, as I like to call it, Cal and Andre f*ck raw every single night 😈😈

Okay but seriously, this is the fanmade version of Caldre where Andre and Cal HAVE been sexually involved, and toe the line of romance very closely. Even though they might not be labeled, they’re still clearly a thing, and there is clear attraction to each other between them.

HEADCANON vers:

This is what I think of as the in between. In my mind, this is a version of Cal and Andre that takes their canon relationship and runs deeper with it, but is not explicitly sexual. I like this version because I tend to see Andre and Cal as almost everything but never quite anything.

They’re almost just two normal, platonic friends, but not quite. They’re almost something tangible, something explicit, but they never quite cross that line. They’re stuck in a limbo until they die.

I also think that this is why I personally believe that Andre and Cal most likely never had sex. I think Ben Coccio himself provides the best explanation of this. There’s certainly tension and intimacy between Cal and Andre. They’re two angry, pent up teenagers trapped in lives they feel suffocated by, and that emotion NEEDS a release. I don’t think Coccio’s theory that, had they found that release through sex, they may have been less likely to commit zero day at all, and we would’ve been left with a very different movie.

I think the furthest I can actually see Cal and Andre going is mayyyyyybe hooking up the night before the shooting (similarly to in elephant) when they have nothing left to lose. Still, I do think that it takes away from the intensity of their relationship if that detail is added.

Total Shithead Andre Headcanons

• Andre who invites Cal over to sleepover and then makes him sleep on the floor. Doesn’t even offer the bed

• Andre who is THE BIGGEST sweet talker, especially to Cal’s mom. Cal wants to kill him a little for it every time.

• and by extension Cal’s whole family. He’ll play games with Cal’s brother and sisters even though Cal just wants them to leave them alone, and chat with Cal’s dad about sports and politics, even though he couldn’t really care less about either. Why? No one knows, he just likes one upping Cal 😭

• Andre who’s so petty it’s unbelievable. Cal didn’t do his homework and needs answers? Good luck. Cal didn’t wake up early enough and missed his ride? Have fun walking. Cal fucked up at work? Hope he’s got a good excuse. Seriously, this man knows how to hold a grudge.

• Andre who begs Cal to come over. Why? “Just do it dude it’s important” makes Cal walk to his house, the announces that he was simply “bored” and proceeds to go back to whatever he was doing prior

• Andre who’s definitely an internet troll (regardless of lack of internet 😒) Will make multiple profiles just to spam and fuck with people he doesn’t like

• Andre who makes fun of literally everyone for literally everything, when Cal realizes later, much to his frustration, that ANDRE LIKES HALF THE THINGS HES MAKING FUN OF. Seriously, he mocked Cal for WEEKS for growing out his hair because of Kurt Cobain, why does he have a Nirvana poster on his wall???

• Andre who blatantly asked Cal why Rachel had to be there the first few times he tried to introduce them. He stopped trying pretty quickly.

• Andre who’s just a piece of shit because he wants to be and Cal doesn’t know why he puts up with this guy 😭

Lazy Cal Headcanons…

• Cal who can’t cook for shit, who grumbles about how hungry he is while Andre cooks elaborate meals for both of them

• Cal who waits in the car while Andre goes into the store or to pump gas and asks him what took so long after he comes out

• Cal who can’t stay on task for the life of him, who distracts Andre with stupid questions and shuts down when Andre tries to keep him focused while doing homework, only to beg Andre for answers the day before assignments are due (Andre doesn’t give them)

• Cal who pretty regularly shows up to school like 45 minutes into first period

• Cal who is never chosen in gym class because this man has never played a sport in his life (plus he just fucks around with Andre the whole time, moans about how the game is stupid, or both)

• Andre who comes back from 2+ hour long track meets, only to find Cal drank all his water waiting for him, because he “was thirsty”

• Cal who can’t hold down a job because he is ✨fashionably late✨ and if he doesn’t feel like doing something, he’ll either just half ass it or skip it all together in order to get out earlier (hence why he and Andre no longer work together)

• Cal who’s just a lazy little shit who perpetually makes Andre want to tear his hair out

Angsty Andre Headcanons

Btw this was initially going to be Cal + Andre initially but I realized they were all just about Andre so here you go! Lemme know if you’re interested in seeing Cal too

- Andre has a guilt complex. When he was younger he used to crawl into his mom’s bed and apologize for everything, begging her to tell him he was “a good person.” Part of his anger is that he’s absolutely crushed by guilt, all the time

- adding on, he once called Cal late at night, in tears, questioning him about if what they were doing with zero day was right. It wasn’t that he was doubting their decision, he just didn’t want do anything bad

- if zero day was ever uncovered, Andre would be the one to break and confess, and it would be the first and only time his father has ever laid hands on him.

- Andre had a panic attack the first time he got high. He was nervous before hand and angry that Cal wasn’t, and it lead to him reacting badly to the feeling of being out of control. Cal held him, then, in a rare moment of softness, murmuring that he’d be okay. It’s not something either of them ever bring up

- Andre never really thought he and Cal would survive zero day, he just avoided really thinking that far ahead. He has moments of weaknesses, though, where reality bares down on him and he’s filled with so much terror it makes him ill, and he calls his brother out of desperation (but he gets no answer)

- Andre always rather liked game design and software engineering, and in the back of his mind there was always a brief sadness for the life he was giving up

- as zero day grew closer, Andre became disordered. He ate less and less, would stay up far too late into the night, skipped classes, gave up on homework, and his outbursts became more frequent. He was gaunt, and his dark under eyes grew more and more pronounced. He died sick and unhappy.

An idea….

Currently thinking about how Cal was definitely toxic AF to Rachel. It was definitely the kind of thing where Rachel would invite the whole class to her birthday party, only for Cal to refuse to share the toys with the other kids and cause a scene. As they got older, and normal teenage insecurities started settling in, Rachel began hanging out with a more concrete group of friends. Still, she diligently tried her best to include Cal and integrate him into the group

He just wasn’t having it.

At group hangouts and parties, Cal would be moody and withdrawn. He’d make snide comments and leave early or lock himself in the bathroom half the time, effectively bringing down the mood and embarrassing Rachel. Her friends don’t quite understand what she sees in this guy.

He’s the type of person to complain to her afterward about how her new friends don’t like him and think he’s a weirdo, and how he hates how shallow they are, but if she tried to refute by bringing up his cold and standoffiish behavior, he’d close off from her, muttering that “she should just stop bothering with him then”

This guy will avoid her friends at all costs, and then get mad at her for not including him in their hangouts. He’ll criticize her friends all he wants, but as soon as she brings up her own concerns about his behavior and Andre’s, he’s like talking to a brick wall. Also the type to pull the “if you’d be so much better without me I guess I’ll just off myself” shit.

All of it leaves Rachel in a constant state of distress around Cal. She constantly feels like she’s walking on eggshells, never knowing what will set him off or what she’s done wrong. It hurts because despite everything, she still cares about Cal. In a some ways, Rachel feels the pressure of fitting in and behaving a certain way with her normal group of friends, as is the way for many adolescence. For her, Cal is almost like freedom, a place to where her darker thoughts and feelings will not be judged harshly. (Also, if she happened to have a small crush on him, then that’s between her and the universe)

It hurts her that he’s so distant from her friends, that he’s so unpredictable, that he spends so much time closed off with Andre instead of opening up to her. It’s so much worse after zero day as well, when she begins to see the truth that she feared all along: to Cal, Andre was important, Andre was an equal, and everyone else was just a speck of dust meant to fade away. She cared so much for this boy, and he never really cared about her.

- in the V and on top of the cross are more peace signs

- directly underneath his name is a note that says “RIP Cal, we’ll miss you”

- just below this, I believe I can make out “Fuck” but the rest is cut off and I’m not completely sure

ANDRE

- directly under his name is a note reading “God have mercy on you, Andre, because I wouldn’t”

- below that it says STOP THE MADNESS

- and below that it just says FUCK YOU

- the very bottom says “We love you, Andre” and there’s more but I cannot see that for the life of me

- above the E in “Andre” is RIP

- inside the R is a peace sign

- on the left side of the cross, same place as Cal’s, it says HATE BREEDS HATE

- there’s another peace sign written in the second E of “breeds,” too

- directly under that, it says “Love is the answer” but in between the first part and “answer” someone wrote ROT IN HELL

- to the left of that, there is something that resembles something along the lines of “I hate, I love,” but it’s hard to tell because of the lighter bottle covering it. There’s also more written further to the left but I couldn’t see what

- somewhere, presumably either on the very bottom, furthest to the left, or on the right side of the cross, someone wrote “we’re praying for you,” because the boys read it out loud

- I also CANNOT see what’s in the E in “Andre” and it’s driving me CRAZY

Yes, this is me reposting my theory that if zero day never happened, Cal would’ve lived a semi normal life for a while, fucked up all major close relationships, and eventually killed himself, and Andre would’ve been withdrawn and judgemental, pushed away friends and coworkers, and eventually lashed out enough that he ended up with no job and in prison.
