U can watch Star Wars so many times and it doesn鈥檛 prepare u for how dumb Star Wars is. For one thing I think we gloss over how kenobi (who has definitely been at the club. Please.) describes the mos eisley cantina as the worst most villainous place ever and then u get inside and it鈥檚 a pack of muppets vaping

i don鈥檛 know about you guys but the main reason i am still on tumblr in 2024 is BECAUSE it is the most cloutless least influential social media app out there and that is the experience i am after. absolutely none of this will ever translate into significant attention or real success in my life and that is so beautiful.

I think the first step towards the life you want is often to just say yes to more things. Accept that coffee invitation from your coworker even if it seems awkward. Sign up for that free class at the library that you're not sure you'll like. Join that club. Book that tour. Say yes to as many things as you can and kill the part of your brain that gut-reacts with a no.

Anakin, Anger, and the Philosophy of the Dark Side
I've been thinking more about evil and the Dark Side. I have said before that saying the Dark Side is evil, and then saying anger is of the Dark Side is foolish. Anger is not evil. Anger is amoral. And thinking on that further, I think this is another reason Anakin would have struggled more than most under the Jedi doctrine he was taught.
Anakin has some pretty significant reasons to be mad. Anakin was someone's property for all of his early childhood. He was beaten, threatened with death, had a bomb put in his body, starved; it's even implied he watched his mother get raped. And nothing is being done about it even though people in power know this is happening and it is supposed to be illegal in the Republic.
The Jedi say it is wrong to be angry about this. His past is irrelevant. He needs to let his anger go. He can't act on it. And, to a point that's true, it will be detrimental to Anakin's mental health if he obsesses over this and allows anger to consume and rule him. You do have to learn to let go to a point. You need to master yourself. That does not mean thought that Anakin cannot or should not be angry. In fact, if Anakin internalizes that he shouldn't be angry and act on that anger to fight against slavery/his abusers, he is being taught that these things are not worth caring about. As a result, he is also indirectly being taught that it does not matter that he has suffered. And naturally that how he feels or thinks about things is irrelevant.
It is one thing for a Jedi who has been raised from birth to be told not to be angry. How much do they have to be angry about? They have not been violated in the fashion that Anakin has. And they've been taught that being taken was a good thing.
The Jedi telling Anakin to let his anger go is akin to telling him to stop caring. It is telling him that the events and circumstances that shaped his identity are irrelevant. As a result, his suffering is irrelevant. The fact is that Anakin has a right to be angry, and he should be allowed to express that anger in a healthy way.
Instead, he ends up just suppressing it. He can't really get rid of his anger until he cuts out the heart that makes him. And Anakin is not just angry because of the personal wrongs he has suffered. He is angry because he is deeply compassionate, and his people continue to languish in slavery; his mother continues to languish in slavery. And nothing is being done about this. Of course he hates what hurts them. Why shouldn't he?
And that is the issue with the way Yoda/the Jedi teaches. The Dark Side=Evil and Anger=Dark Side, ergo Anger=Evil. So every time Anakin gets worked up and wants to help someone, he is often being told directly or indirectly that that is evil. That is simply not true.
Now muse on the implications of that. A kid with Anakin's anger has now internalized that that anger makes him a bad person who is unworthy/undeserving of his training.
Padme is the only one (apart from his mother most likely) who ever told him that "to be angry is to be human."

really i think the red wedding is perhaps one of the best moments in modern literary history because its soooo much more than just that one scene ive said it once and ill say it again nothing in asoiaf is a complete and utter shock twist everything is foreshadowed like being woven into a great tapestry of everything that happens. the red wedding is foreshadowed so much you feel it looming over every narrative involved and i really do believe the cultural consciousness of the spoiler that it will happen improves the reading for the red wedding. you know that sickening feeling that everyone here involved is doomed and there's nothing youu can do to stop it. daenerys's vision of a king with a wolf head surrounded at a feast of the dead a whole book before it even takes place. the emphasizing of how you should never ever ever ever violate the laws of hospitality its a crime against the gods and catelyn continuing to push that they should eat first no more matter what. the legend of the rat cook and the gods anger over it. and then you realize not only is the red wedding a tragedy but it is just the beginning and a narrative device that will span every house involved and their downfalls. it is by design that tywin lannister plans it and he's dead by the end of the same book along with his grandson. oh red wedding you will always be famous i love you so dearly and i cannot wait to read the fabulous horror of the demise that lord walder frey will meet

one thing about asoiaf is that it frequently invites you to have sympathy for characters who've carried out varying degrees of morally repulsive acts (most apparent with pov characters such as theon, cersei, tyrion, and jaime but also sandor, joffrey, and even viserys). and most of these characters have received some equivalent of, what may look like 'narrative comeuppance' : theon flayed by ramsay, cersei made to perform her walk of atonement, tyrion sold as a slave, jaime losing his hand, joffrey's painful, drawn out death etc. except the scenes really aren't framed like that since the series doesn't seem to buy into that idea. all these incidents are not just deserts but moments of horrible injustice against these characters. and that's a little series thesis statement in itself, no neat category of monsters whose misdeeds can be addressed by a single moment of karmic justice but people like you and me who hurt others and have been hurt and continue on living. it's saying, here's this person who is capable of great cruelty influenced and motivated by their experiences with the world, but will you also hold understanding and sympathy in your heart for when the world is cruel to them in return? given what most fandom discourse looks like... the answer to that question is unfortunately a resounding no for a lot of readers.
