Hard-line judiciary head Ebrahim Raisi is Iran's president-elect following an election that saw the lowest voter turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. The landslide victory came amid calls for a boycott among the 59 million eligible voters in Iran after Raisi's strongest competition was disqualified from running. The election of Raisi is also sanctioned by the U.S., in part for his role in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988. Iranian state television blamed the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. sanctions for the low voter participation.
