Anon from before talking about how my opinion of goldie soured for a bit! (im gonna start marking my anons with something so i dont have to do this every time lol)

Yeah no i wasn’t saying it should be written differently or anything! You write really well and your characters are extremely believable. Its good writing! I was mostly just voicing my opinions for discussions sake, like how I would in comments on deviantART or comicfury or something. That’s the same for every time I make a comment about something the characters did- I know it’s hard to discern tone or intent over the internet though 😔 boils down to “fantastic writing, i want to put goldie and scorch in a jar and rattle them around for a bit”

Unfortunately Goldie can be a pushover when it comes to Scorch, and with the way Scorch treats people it creates a pretty unhealthy dynamic in regards to conflict like this. I sympathize with how Scorch’s life has been Shitty Bad and Awful™️ but I really really think she needs to work on herself before she actually engages in any sort of serious romantic relationship.

And again I don’t necessarily think Goldie and Scorch should be banned from mushy behavior in front of Yarrowshade (they basically live in the same house so that would be hard lol) it was just Scorch’s attitude towards him and then her turning around and acting like that with Goldenstar that made me mad. It was just evidence she was being petty for petty’s sake instead of actually being hurt or upset. Pretty worried about what kind of values she’s going to instill in her apprentice tbh!!!

Again fantastic writing A+++. People are messy and I like how you write that!! I actually have notifs on for this blog and I usually drop everything to check it when a new post shows up!

Hey, thanks for reaching out again. Definitely didn't mean to imply I thought you were trying to say I should write differently although I totally see how my response came off that way. My bad!

I'm glad you want to engage in discussion about my characters cause I LOVE engaging in that too!

And yeah, Scorch probably shouldn't be in a relationship right now. Sadly it's very common for people to enter relationships when they aren't ready for it. Hopefully Goldie is a bigger influence on her than she is on Goldie. Also, well noted, it is going to be interesting to see what kind of influence Scorch has on Fogpaw.

Something I do want to point out is that between Scorch making Yarrowshade apologize and she and Goldie being all mushy, there is an unspecified amount of time where Yarrowshade tells a funny story and the cats talk and joke and walk. I feel like that makes it slightly less insensitive. But yeah, you're right. Scorch is being petty and she knows it. She thinks as much in the piece where she's taken away, acknowledging that what she wants - to be chosen every time no matter what - is selfish and unreasonable. Not to excuse the behavior of course, just wanting to discuss it, like you said ^w^

Ngl while Scorchplume acting like Yarrowshade owes her an apology for “not choosing” her is irritating but expected of her character, but Goldenstar not calling her out on the fact that’s a shitty way to treat your friend has soured my opinion on her a bit. Especially since the cat Yarrow chose died like a day after they became mates, and you currently have a relationship that you’re actively being mushy in while he’s standing there lol.

(To clarify Im not saying they cant be mushy while Yarrow is there, its just how petty she was being only to turn around and act like that with Goldenstar rubs me the wrong way really bad)

I totally understand where you're coming from. All I can say is that people aren't perfect and make mistakes.

Part of the way Scorch feels safe is by trying to make sure she has power over other people. As a part of that, she's made it pretty clear that if things don't go how she wants them to, she's going to leave which strongly incentivizes Goldenstar to make sure she's happy and safe. As her brand new (not) girlfriend, Goldenstar really doesn't want to drive Scorchplume away so she's not about to make a big fight out of this, especially since they were fighting about this exact topic when Scorch was taken. Consciously or not, Goldenstar has associated this specific argument with losing Scorchplume.

She does her best to influence Scorch without direct conflict (be nice, he's trying) and she probably talks about it with Scorch in private, when bringing it up feels less threatening than right in front of Yarrowshade.

As far as being mushy in front of him, I don't think it even occurred to either of them that doing that might upset him. If Goldenstar finds out, she's definitely going to feel absolutely terrible about it, which is why he kept it from them. Unfortunately, Goldenstar is in a point in her new relationship where she's not thinking super clearly and is just entirely infatuated and Yarrowshade is terrible at communicating when he's uncomfortable or sad.

But yeah, totally understandable and valid that this kind of behavior squicks you out, but its also 1) the result of imperfect humans cats making imperfect choices and 2) conflict that makes the story interesting. Not to, like, persuade you to feel differently or anything, just explaining why it's in the story and detailing my thought process.

It seems like everybody is really excited for this moment haha But Scorch isn't going to be anywhere near the fighting so we won't get quiiiite that much drama. Still, Razor will probably be in for a surprise.

Quick question about your allegiances, how are the warriors ordered? Are the cats that come first meant to be older than those who come later in the list?

Also great story! Thrilled to se Fogpaw’s journey as an apprentice.

I'm not super particular with how i order my allegiances tbh. In general, it is Oldest to Newest which is different from Oldest to Youngest in that new cats like Scorch just go at the bottom of the list when they join. In that way it's kind of like sorting by ID number in Clangen. So generally the cats at the top are older than the ones below them but new members might throw that off and the founders aren't in perfect age order.

MENTOR BETTING POOL RESULTS

Now that Fogpaw and Slatepaw have officially been apprenticed, it's time to reveal the results of the betting pool!

Unlike last time, we had SEVERAL correct guesses! Congratulations to @dixie-cupps, @turtlestep, @ravenbarley-barn, and @tiredfort who all guessed Scorchplume for Fogpaw and Pantherhaze for Slatepaw!!! As promised, all of you will receive a chibi portrait of a warriors oc of your choice. I will reach out to you privately for details.

Since the results haven’t been revealed yet idk if I’m right but here was my logic for picking mentors: Since there was no sign of either being interested in healing that cut out Sage and Odd, plus Gold, Russet, and Yarrow since they already have apprentices. Alder definitely isn’t in a good place to have an apprentice of her own yet, and I eliminated Osprey for both since Fog and Slate would naturally be training together a lot, which would make things awkward for Fog. That left me with three options for both, and Panther seemed like the obvious choice for Slate to me since he’s a fairly gentle cat and it was mentioned that Slate would need someone like that. So I only had Branch and Scorch to pick between for Fog, and I’ll be honest, we haven’t really seen enough of Branch to get a good read on his personality/if he’d be a good mentor for Fog. Scorch meanwhile can at the very least push back against Fog and match her energy, which it definitely seems she needs in order to keep a handle on her

I feel like Scorch is gonna have a very Eda Clawthorne type approach to being a mentor- I’m just excited to see how her dynamic with Fogpaw goes

Ooh i'd never heard this one before! I don't think it quite fits Scorch, I think it would be more applicable to someone who grew up in the system and believed in it. Maybe some of the cats who we've yet to meet might fit it well ;3

Month 14 - Newleaf

“It’s almost time,” Fogkit muttered to herself. She enjoyed muttering, especially if there was no one there to listen. It made her feel like she was five steps ahead. And today, she was. She had spent all week making spells out of prey scraps and mud and moth wings and such in preparation for today. 

Last night, Goldenstar had told her and Slatekit that they would be apprenticed at dawn. She had risen early to groom her fur and scatter feathers around the camp for good luck. Now she sat hunched in the dark, hidden in the grass near the nursery, waiting for dawn. The sky was starting to turn a soft, pretty pink.

A few cats were up and about, likely waiting just like she was. She watched as Floodpaw slank out of the apprentices’ den and arched his back in a long, lanky curve, and she brightened. She bolted for him and slipped underneath him to poke her head out between his forelegs so she could look up at him. 

He jumped and said, “Yikes, kid! What are you doing up so early?”

“Um, I’m gonna be apprenticed,” Fogkit rolled her eyes. “Duh!” He rolled his eyes in return and sat down on top of her. She squealed in delight and thrashed wildly. 

“Huh,” he said, “where did Fogkit go?” 

“I’m here!” she screamed, kicking with all her might. He winced but stayed where he was. 

“Fogkit?” he called. “Oh, Fogkit! Man, that’s a shame. She’s gonna miss her ceremony.”

“No!” she giggled. “No, I can’t!” She rolled onto her back as best she could and kicked hard with both legs. Floodpaw gave a grunt of pain and tumbled off of her immediately. She laughed and sprang on him where he lay curled in a pained ball. 

“Take that!” she declared, swiping at his ears. 

The apprentice simply wheezed, “Good kick…” 

Fogkit laughed and sat down to smooth out her fur again. Floodpaw was so much fun. Sparrowpaw and Barleypaw poked their heads out of the den and Fogkit waved her tail at them with a chipper smile. 

“Everything alright out here?” Sparrowpaw asked, raising a brow. 

“Yep!” she purred. 

“Mhm,” groaned Floodpaw. 

Barleypaw laughed and sat down next to her brother to purr against his side. “She must have got you pretty good.”

“Only ‘cause he sat on me,” Fogkit said. 

“Oh, then I guess he deserved it,” Sparrowpaw smirked. 

“Go hug a badger,” grumbled Floodpaw, finally managing to uncurl his body. 

“Fogkit!” Slatekit’s voice squeaked from across the camp. Fogkit turned to smile at her sister and waved her over. Slatekit hesitated but crossed the distance to huddle beside her. 

“Hey!” Fogkit said, “You excited?”

“Mm,” Slatekit whimpered in lieu of an answer. 

“You’ll do great,” Barleypaw said. “I was super nervous at my ceremony too but it’s really not that scary.” Slatekit whimpered again.

“It’s okay,” Fogkit said confidently. “I’ve been doing spells all week to make sure we get the best mentors.” 

“Spells?” Sparrowpaw blinked in surprise. 

“Yeah!” Fogkit brightened. “Mystique told us all about how wild cats do magic spells to help their friends and curse their enemies. She didn’t know how to do them but I figured it out, I think.” 

“Is that so?” Barleypaw seemed apprehensive. Floodpaw laughed. 

Slatekit nodded. “Yeah, she said that wild cats are magic. We’re wild cats, right?” 

“That is what the city calls Clan cats, yes,” said Sparrowpaw, “but-” 

“Yeah!” Fogkit said, eager to share with them. “Magic is easy, you just have to get the right stuff and then think really hard about what you want to happen and sometimes put the stuff in a special place or something! I can show you guys sometime.” 

“I’m good,” snorted Floodpaw.

“Maybe…” Barleypaw laughed awkwardly. “We’ve got to train for our final assessments though.” 

“Oh, yeah,” Fogkit frowned. “You’re not gonna be in the apprentice den with us for very long…”

“Yeah,” said Sparrowpaw, “but you’ll be warriors before you know it. Time flies like that.” 

Goldenstar’s voice rang out through the camp. “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the Stoneperch for a Clan meeting!”

“It’s happening!” squealed Fogkit, bouncing on her toes. Slatekit whined nervously. 

“Come on, lets go sit closer,” Barleypaw said, wrapping her tail over Slatekit’s shoulders. The group of them moved in to join the other cats who trickled out of their dens and settled in a semicircle around the Stoneperch. Goldenstar sat atop the stone, her fur glowing under the creeping light of dawn. Fogkit kneaded the ground in anticipation. 

“Today,” Goldenstar began, “we name two apprentices who have been waiting eagerly for this moment. Fogkit, Slatekit, you have reached the age of six moons and that means it’s time for you to start your training towards becoming warriors. From this day on, until you receive your warrior names, you will be known as Fogpaw and Slatepaw.” Everyone cheered, chorusing their new names. Slatepaw blushed and tried to stand up tall. Fogpaw didn’t stop looking at Goldenstar. She wasn’t going to be satisfied until she heard who her mentor would be. 

“Slatepaw,” said Goldenstar, “for your mentor, I have chosen someone who has proven himself to be a kind and gentle mentor in the past. I entrust your training to Pantherhaze and hope that you will be able to rely on him when times are tough.” 

Pantherhaze stepped out of the crowd, smiling softly. Slatepaw swallowed and stepped up to meet him. Fogpaw could see her trembling as they touched noses. He whispered something to her and she nodded. Fogpaw was happy with the pair. It seemed her spell had paid off. 

“Fogpaw,” Goldenstar’s voice brought her back to attention. “Your mentor will be Scorchplume.” Fogpaw’s jaw fell open in surprise. She hadn’t realized that was an option. “Scorchplume, while this is your first apprentice, I am confident you will be able to teach Fogpaw how to excel at any pursuit she puts her mind to.” 

Scorchplume swished her big, ginger tail up over her back and strode into the circle to meet Fogpaw. Fogpaw was frozen for a moment, unsure. Was this really what her magic had decided was the best mentor for her? 

She glanced around at the other cats, the ones without apprentices. Branchbark, Aldertail, and Ospreymask all sat together near the edge. Ospreymask looked especially disappointed. Fogpaw realized that she wouldn’t want any of them to be her teacher. She looked back at Scorchplume who had raised her brows expectantly and tried to see through her expression to her aura. Scorchplume was bold and sharp and pretty. She was the only cat to have gone to the city and come back safely. Yes, Fogpaw decided, this was the perfect mentor for her. 

Grinning, Fogpaw stepped up and presented her nose for Scorchplume to touch with her own. The warrior gave an amused humm and did so. The touch sent an electric shock through Fogpaw’s nose and she recoiled to rub at it with her paw. Scorchplume wrinkled her nose at the sensation. That had to mean something, right? 

“We’re tied now,” she mumbled to Scorchplume, “you and me.” 

“Really, now?” Scorch whispered back. 

“With that, our meeting is concluded,” Goldenstar said. “Congratulations, Fogpaw and Slatepaw!” Another round of cheering went up for the both of them. Fogpaw looked around the circle and felt tears swelling within her. All of their will, all of their passion, was behind her now, driving her forward. She could almost feel StarClan’s presence on her back. I promise, Mama, she vowed, imagining spellwork being woven into every word, I’m going to become the best warrior there is. I’ll make you proud.
